From what I heard, he eventually got his truck to stop but he was very shaken up about almost hitting the bus

The person in that blue pick up has absolutely no survival instincts. MOVE!!! He was just sitting there waiting for it. He's lucky that the truck driver was quick and skilled.
He was trying to back up but the white car behind him didnt move at all. In the full video you can see him back up into the white car.

Almost a year later, and I am still baffled at that pickup truck that just isnt moving out of the way.
It did, wanna know why it didn't go in the grass? The semi could've went in the grass. 50/50. Best to just back up

@frankieperson1275 every player did what they were supposed to do. That truck backed up. You can see he right up on the white car behind him. He doesn't know if the truck is going in the grass or what he did do. Backing up was the best thing he could do. That in fact along with the drivers excellent driving was the main reason everyone in this incident is OK afterwords.
When you realize your truck has just become an unforgiving, devastating killing machine, and the world decided to put a school bus in your path. The fear and mental anguish in that immediate moment met with the desperation to have any form of control...this man was forced into a true fight or flight response, and when pleading did nothing, he pulled through. Bless this man for making it out of one of the most horrifying moments anyone with a heart can be forced into.
Give the school bus driver some ears aswell so he can hear the truck horn and reverse or get out of the way.
In Germany this is a law and practice that works
@@tobiasa9071there were kids stood up and getting off the bus, if they had just suddenly started reversing to try and get out of the way that may have caused more issues, if anything they should stay put and the cars on the other side of the road should’ve bailed off to the side of the road as there was space and they’re driving vehicles that should have no problem off roading, it’s hard to think quickly in this situation as you do know how other people will react to try and get out of the way so yeah props to that truck driver for driving so well while completely panicking

The amount of people that have zero situational awareness is mind boggling. At times I might have my music too high, but I still look around at my mirrors, especially when at a stop on a road like that.

The bus driver can’t move because a child is exiting the bus and the black car is still behind her until the last minute. I think she’s commenting on that SUV and how the driver isn’t reacting fast enough to back up out of the way.

I had that same thing happened to me driving a big old dump truck. I kept telling the owner of the brakes are not good in this dump truck and he refused to have them looked at or repaired or anything and finally one day coming around the corner all traffic was stopped and the brakes failed and I was not going to run into those people so I jammed every gear I could in that transmission until it blew and blew the transaxle in the back. It literally sounded like an explosion. You can bet that cost him many thousands more than a brake job would have

That trucker sounded more afraid than the school bus driver did.... and can we just take a minute to respect how tight that squeeze was?! I bet most drivers wouldn't have been able to slide that dump truck in there without clipping another vehicle.
Idk. I went from DC to New Jersey on a bus, the bus driver drove at like midnight.... through dense fog. Mad f-in respect for them.

My dad always said this was part of the trucker code. He would burn with his truck if it meant saving a bus full of kids. I get chills every time i watch this.

My mom was a public school teacher and back when she would do school shooting drills, she always said she would protect her kids at all costs and that shooter would get the beat down of a lifetime, even if that meant she wouldn’t come home to my brother and I. Was some scary stuff!

The SUV behind the school bus did the right thing and moved to the shoulder, but meanwhile the GM Pickup Truck and the car behind saw what was happening, but it seems like instead of moving to the grass, the pickup tried to hit reverse but the car behind did not move at all. Thank God that the truck driver had the skills to avoid hitting anyone

The military also use man made chicanes in order to slow vehicles down either to identify, fire at, or before a checkpoint etc
Honestly if the truck driver showed this clip to a truck racing team they'd probably hire him for his skills.
I used to drive a school bus. I’m so shocked the bus driver just sat there. Inexcusable on the bus drivers part. Where I lived, we went through extensive classroom and road training. We were taught about the signals truckers use to send out the warning something was really wrong. So, if you ever hear anything like this from a trucker, get out of the way immediately!! No matter what kind of vehicle you’re in. It can mean the difference between life and death.

I mean in that scenario, you may not be thinking straight, but wouldn't going off road and hitting something that didn't have people in it be better (if there hadn't been a gap) than hitting any of the vehicles? And jump out before collision and hope you make it?

Why did he not apply the dash yellow and red buttons in the Tractor? It must have been brake fade as his maxi brakes would have locked up with a major air leak.
Bless that truck driver, he sounded so frightened. I'm glad the bus didn't move forward. What is so confusing to me is WHY didn't the black pick up move to the right, he had plenty of room, even though the trucker made it, it didn't have to be that close of a call. It made me start crying. I’m so thankful there were no children crossing and the fact that he handled his truck the way he did.

he did the EXACT thing he was supposed to. he made sense of the situation and had a quick reaction time.
I would of ( maybe he did and didn't work) dumped the air out of the system as on those trucks they use air to hold the breaks open. On air break is press the pedal to let the air out to release pressure and on hydraulic like on cars press to make pressure.
Then would have done it with the horn the whole time.

Our bus driver always taught us children to pass the street BEHIND the bus. It is so dangerous to pass it in front of the bus.
The question is why the car behind the chevy didn’t back up as well and the chevy didn’t go off the road after they hit the car behind

This truck driver is a legend i am a truck driver in germany and there are sometimes at these hills like braking stations where you like can drive on and the little stones are braking you when your brakes don't work its terrifying to hear his panic in his voice hes a legend and he will never forget this moment in his whole life its just making me cry how the kids even are scared and dont know what happened imagine the truck crashing into the bus and a child dies or he crashes into a car imagine how hard it is to make a turn like this i just think this is a pretty crazy moment i can feel the fear the driver had

The best thing the other traffic could have done is exactly what they did stay exactly where they are giving the truck driver room to get through without causing harm. A foot or 2 difference could have taken lives due to them trying to move out of the way. Some people also freeze in situations like that not knowing what to do.

@@DarkNugget39 the truck's brakes failed, or just couldn't stop in time. Look up "truck runaway ramp" and you'll see lots of examples of big trucks having to go off the road because their brakes failed. They make runaway ramps for these situations on highways, so that less people get hurt. In this video the driver was terrified because he couldn't stop in time and there was an entire school bus full of children in front of him
@@DarkNugget39 also I have a feeling that the reason all the cars were stopped is bc when the bus has the stop signs it’s the law that all cars stop to keep the kids getting of the bus safe. If all the cars had been moving whilst the bus was parked that would have been catastrophic

The bus technically shouldn't legally have a bus stop right there, cuz almost no commercial or military vehicle could stop in this situation with any load
The judge would seriously say "im glad no one is hurt, but there is no fault on the trucker here".
Had the kids been hit, the story changes cuz CDL handbook tells them to avoid the accident. And going off road, so please dont think thats the answer. Its a final resort

A few years ago my dad was also driving a truck like this and the brakes failed on a sloping road that was notorious for fatal pile-ups. He was heading downwards so he would have pretty much collided with the long line of vehicles coming up with no way to turn around. He decided to swerve into the nearby bushes to avoid that but the truck caught on fire and part of it exploded. Everyone was certain he was dead because they didn't see any way someone could have survived that. But thankfully it wasn't his time to die so he survived with only minor external injuries and a few internal injuries that still persist but are not life threatening. Saddest part is that he got no compensation whatsoever and lost his job when the injuries prevented him from working. He's still stuck with all those medical bills to this day. Talk about unsung heroes...

Excellent driving skills would be after lowering gear… he should move like 5 km/h or even slower (I’m not sure about top speed at the lowest gear in trucks with ~16 gears but it should be really slow)

No truck driver wants to kill somebody unfortunately sometimes there’s no other option guy did all he could and it saved the day.
@@luiseduardovaldivia3510 thats why you have know how to drive a truck with too much weight, especially the weight in those type of trailers, to go down in a slope you have to chose a gear where the engine brake holds you without using the air brakes too much, if you feel that you are using the air brakes too much, you hit the brake pedal until the rpm’s go about 1000 to 1100 change to a two lower gears, sometimes when you do that, if you don’t stop the truck enough to make that change of gear you can miss the gear an the truck will neutralize and because you are in a slope the truck will be accelerating, so, what you have to do when that happens is hit the whole brake pedal, try to stop the truck as much a you can and try to put a gear in the engine and use the engine brake
Now of course, always take your distance from the vehicle in front of you, if you see the stop lights of the vehicle and it looks like is going to be a complete stop, take your distance and time to stop the truck

I’m a heavy truck mechanic and my skins crawling. Wheel offs and brake failures are really real and very important to inspect them pieces on the truck.

I would be giving that man a raise and a all expenses paid vacation. The quick thinking and paired with his skill in the situation was phenomenal I would of frozen up and just panicked the moment I realized my brakes went out.

@@LoseManIKI1Because there's peoples' homes on either side of the road??? Staying on the road when your brakes fail is ideal if there isn't a runaway truck ramp or a wide shoulder. He goes off the road, he quickly loses like 50% steering control of the vehicle, which means he can crash into trees, houses, guardrails, or ditches. He likely came to a slow rolling stop without much damage to anything by staying on the road.

he does not have high speed - even if he goes into a ditch, crashes into a fence - this is better than if he crashes into cars collecting scrap metal and meat on the way...
Did he see that gap between the pickup truck and the bus? And if he wasn't there? Would it have crashed into a pickup truck - is it better than if it had veered down the slide to the green on the left and put the truck on its side in the worst case?
It is obvious to me if the truck has failed brakes and the road is not free and there is an opportunity to go into a ditch - the truck driver must turn into a ditch so as not to collect metal and meat on the way

Some company loaded a driver all on one side he was tipping to that side and their company had to call a crane because he was already 30 miles from their company. Like it's so dumb what I hear. Surprisingly brakes failing happens more than what I would've liked to know.
They should be concerned because if they crash even one car, they will be charged with multiple homicide and the company's reputation will suffer

@@sunetvardsky8685 power poles, trees on both sides, ditch on either side. no field in site. doesn't take much to roll a truck pulling off the hard shoulder onto grass/dirt. especially if the ground is soft. trucks are super heavy and will sink first chance they get.

My dad (a trucker) said something like this before, a trucker is more responsible for someone’s life than a doctor, as it only takes one ill fated incident and so many lives can be lost. I’m glad he managed to avoid everyone, I hope he’s safe, he’s a good man.

As a firefighter I've seen a lot of accidents and our fire tenders also use air brakes, I can honestly say his driving is top class even though the panic he's feeling is indescribable. Glad that the people on this video were alright and I hope this truck driver is safe 🙏 Not a situation many people could manage so effectively

The truck driver was a male and the bus drivers i believe were both female.
@@Joemamahoeee For one, the female doesn’t seem like she’s a bus driver, but maybe a teacher/principal riding with bus driver, second the trucks breaks went out downhill and was unable to decelerate safely before reaching the vehicles…
This happened in Ohio in April of 2022. The driver of the truck realized his brakes had failed, down-shifted, flashed his lights and blew his horn to alert everyone of the danger. The police chief said he did an excellent job. "He had to put that 80,000 pound rig somewhere and he was able to thread that needle without injuring or hitting anyone." The truck slowed to a stop about 1/4 mile down the road.
