The graphics are really pretty and the soundtrack is a banger for sure, but the isometric perspective would drive me insane, especially for those boss fights.
The isometric viewpoint is the weakest parts of the game - the point at which projectiles actually register a hit with your ship is at odds with what you're eyes are seeing. Making a a bullet hell kind of shooter with a wonky perspective wasn't a great idea.
I disagree, although the perspective takes getting used to, it really makes the game unique and challenging. I can't complete the game, but I always enjoy playing when I can.
This game is a throwback to Zaxxon, a game from way back that had the same perspective. Back in those days you just rolled with it, we weren't so set in a particular mode of a particular kind of shooter at that point - that really hadn't evolved too much by that point. So you just took what you got.
@@MultiJamesman After playing video games for over 35 years, including _Zaxxon_ , I can assure you it was a delight to play other games that weren't in the isometric perspective.
I remember playing this in the arcade back in the early 90s. Good game but damn, was it tough! Awesome soundtrack. Edit.: the spaceship always reminded me a lot of Don Davis spaceship at the start of Esh's Aurunmilla.
Because few could afford a Neo Geo, and the titles that showed up in arcades were pretty randomly available if they weren't something like Samurai Showdown, which I found to be a lot more commonly available. I never heard of this game either and it looks super cool.
Nothing wrong with the isometric perspective at all. I played this loads in the arcade and still have my AES cartridge. The later levels are MF hard. This is a classic all day long.
Well, I think this game is very interesting, even if it’s hard AF, I think the pre-rendered style graphics are something interesting to see nowadays, also the soundtrack is awesome.
I was always a fan of this game in the arcade but it was just so damn hard I barely got past stage 2. I always felt the hit detection was off but that may have been that perspective messing with my eyes agreeing with your comments. Bosses just took too long to take down especially on a non-instant spawning shmup and having them recycled on stage four just tells me that the developers ran out of ideas.. however that being said it was an arcade game out to get your quarters. Thanks for posting this though! You sir or madam are a God for getting through this difficult game.😁
@Keith Courage RX-78-2 I remember reading the Mega Drive version was cut down from the original ( not a massive surprise ) and the Playstation graphics were redone and I think a lot of people preferred the original graphics. I remember seeing Viewpoint in magazines on Neo Geo and Arcade and loved the way it looked. Hopefully will get to try it one day
This game is like the Dark Souls of arcade shooters, whenever you die you have to start from the beginning, and if you're in the arcade you'll be wasting A LOT.
This game looks like Zaxxon on acid. Not that it's a bad thing. Oh, and I came here from watching Game Quarterly Monthly's video on the PlayStation in 95 and this game was featured. Now I really want to play this
@@thefifthdoctor6780 maybe not understand me, timing standards for sound generation is different from original machine and PC soundcard, there must be emulated
Still looking good and solid today! Strongly reminds me of a similar game I used to play on my Apple 2E but I cannot remember the name... Found it, ZAXXON! ua-cam.com/video/hMSXkOUJAEQ/v-deo.html
Great game unfortunately for me my game crashes at stage 5 after beating the giant crab. I have unibios 4.0 now and not sure if that's the reason but I keep getting the Exception error handling illegal address green screen. I've cleaned it but no luck. If anybody has any solutions feel free to share thanks.👍😎👌
the music doesnt really match at all, the gameplay and graphics are good but the music is so lame. like, i dont want to be seen playing a game with music like that. especially the boss music once they all start going OooooooHHHHH i lose it and have to just give up and laugh because it's so damn silly every time. otherwise it was a great game. but i just cant get over the boss music it's so lousy lol
This is a beautiful game. Just one of the highlights, Of the Neo geo library. I still believe that, it looks good today.
Viewpoint is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING and AWESOMELY Fantastic
This game is HARD
I remember the music game the most. It’s still very good! The first and last song are killer!
Ha, I remember reading Electronic Gaming Monthly's review of this game and a few of their critics went apeshit over the techno soundtrack.
@@christinalaw3375 I guess my new name is Nobody then.
Soundtrack on this game is one of the best ever made...
I love techno but this soundtrack always was shitty and didn’t fit with the game
It is an unusually good soundtrack for the time! They really used the NEO GEO's large sound sample capacity to get the sound of 90's R&B / EDM
@@federicomontiofficiali liked the ending staff roll track
Just watched this through yet again. Well played sir!

I agree about that soundtrack.it just oozes with nostalgia. It takes me back to better years.

Viewpoint is so enthusiastic; I couldn't even resist its cool music!
It's funny how all the slowdown on the Genesis version made this game WAAAY easier
Seems like the spiritual successor to Zaxxon.
Correct. Sega (now a part of Sega Sammy Holdings) owns both Zaxxon and Viewpoint.
always loved this game
My god wow how did I not know about this game? I would have freaking adored this game upon it's release!!

banger audio and great use of prerendered 3D models, this could easily pass as a modern indie game
11:06 Please, let the mother and the children pass over the street!
As small as those enemy bullets are and all the stuff going on, your dodging is a treat to watch
I had a Neo Geo in the 90s and always wanted to play this game but it was so fucking expensive.
As a newb first time I played took me about two minutes to feel like I wasted my money but i was hooked

This game needs to be on The Switch.
Absolutely gorgeous game indeed.
This is one of the first games I had on the PS1.
So you had the better looking one but with horrible music
Always wanted to play this. Missed out on the Mega Drive and PS1 versions

Nice. Vibes like advanced, izometric R-Type.
Dang this game is totally awesome, great graphics and deadly but fun thank u 😃❤️🇺🇸😎
This game is awesome
0:53 1 2 3, 4 Hit It! Actually this sounds and looks so much better than the Genesis port (and Arguably, the later PS1 reboot!)

There's a version of Viewpoint for Sega Genesis as well, which is mightily impressive when compared to the Neo Geo.
Sizlla Okamura is so groovy!
attention to detail
I like this game; I just don't like the music, and this strange bug here shoots its own poop at you (12:02). Viewpoint indeed. xD
the fully charged weapon sounds Hong kong traffic crossings.
I couldn't afford a NeoGeo console back then. 😪
Now I own four. 😏
Go for the funk Bill Paxton.
This is Now Geo AES home system version .MVS is arcade version.
A Crab Turned into a Brain! 🦀🧠
I can't believe they didn't just add some horizontally mirrored right-to-left sections.
Like every arcade cash cow from the days, not only do they become TOO hard, they also become less imaginative and pretty with each level.
I had it on the Neo Geo CD and I loved/hated it so much...😢😅
No shield before crab on lv5 area?? 😮
Area 5 final boss is a true torture and painful on lv 8 and cabinet set to Hyper. Good job in this I think lv 4

Wonder if there's a merged version that combines the different releases?
The enemies remind me of Xevious
Most do not last the first level.

I think the PS1 soundtrack is better, definitely against stages 5 and 6
