How to Replace a Broken Sump Pump
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 січ 2025
- Did your sump pump die? Just stopped sumping one day? Well save yourself some money because I’m going to show you how to replace it all by yourself!
Yes folks, changing a sump pump is one of the easiest things to do. All you need is the new pump and possibly a reducer bushing to accommodate the size of the discharge port on your new pump. That’s it!
I’ll be replacing my Flotec 1/4 horsepower sump with a Rigid 1/2 horsepower dual pump from the Home Depot.

I enjoyed your humor throughout this video. Thank you so much for the help! I am a 64-year-old female and I feel confident, I can do this.
Glad you found it helpful and more importantly you got this!! I believe in you.
Just installed mine. Piece of cake.
Big thanks,, you gave my the strength to fix mine,, we had a nasty flood!!
You have a great day!! Thanks again 👍🏽👍🏽
Oh glad this helped! Good luck!
I watched half of it before getting the confidence to do it myself and took me 20 minutes. Thanks! One thing I did different though was I used my shop vac and cleaned out my basin of debris.
That is awesome thanks for letting me know! Glad you found this helpful. And good idea on cleaning out the basin!
I went to the basement this morning I heard this humming noise coming from my Sum Pump.
I knew immediately it needed to be replaced.
I first called my plumber I haven't heard from him,
first video I pulled on youtube was yours,
I just wanted to thank you for this easy video and taking the time to make it.
I went to lowes of course I replaced it with Zoeller brand .
Super easy,I usually screw things up not this time .
Working like champ.
Thank you sir,
So bummed you had to deal with this in the first place but so very happy I was able to help!! Glad all is better now!!
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. Was worried hooking it up would be more complicated and this gave me the assurance that it was plug and play and I just got mine hooked up just before writing this. Thank you AP!
That’s awesome! Go you! Glad the video helped!
Curious about the backup systems? Saw a watchdog one with a back up pump and battery. is that needed??
That's a good point. I don't have a back up pump or battery but sounds like it's a good idea for sure. If you go that route please share what you end up doing as I'm super curious!
You made an awesome video brother. I got some comedy while learning how to replace a Sump pump on my own. 👏 👏 👏
Thanks man!! Appreciate that!
Ha, do you remember the Howie Mandel Bobby voice? Nice. I'm going to pick one up tomorrow (a Ridgid) as my old one made it 16 years OEM with the house. When the local plumber quoted me $1300.00 to replace it (??) I said, "not gonna happen, don't call me back." That's why I'm researching. So, thanks. It's this video and a couple of others that are making my life MUCH easier!
It’s really really dark in here! Haha. Oh yes Bobby. $1300!?!? That is insane!! I’m glad you are going the DIY route. It’s such a super simple replacement. I was shocked. Good luck!! And put those savings to good use!
Thank you so much ❤for your support
Soooo glad I came across your page! New homeowner who’s basement collected water from this tropical storm. Called a ‘handyman’ who diagnostic was $70. Headed to Home Depot now!! 💨
Good luck and here’s to a dry basement!
Great video. Thanks! I’m gonna replace mine today. It hasn’t been working for a long time.
Awesome! Glad to help!
Thanks for the video. Quick question: You mentioned that the water was above the floater level, do you know why it did not flood your basement when your original pump died? Got lucky or is there another reason?
Hi! Trying to remember since it was awhile ago but I think it was being intermittent with the pumping, i.e., sometimes it would go, sometimes it wasn't and I caught it in time before any major flooding happened. Thanks for the question!
Install a check valve as well to prevent back flow. Very simple addition. Great video!
Good tip! Thank you!!
Thank you for your video. I replaced my pump by myself & saved myself some $. 😊
Aww yeah!!
Ok, Parliament got me, I'm a subscriber.
I couldn’t help myself haha
You give me hope...and I need it. I'm not sure what to do if the pipe is too short or too long. I will try to take little videos of my progress.
Glad to help! And if it's too long, a simple hack saw should solve that. If it's too short, they make adaptors to lengthen the pipe (you should be able to find those at your local home center. Good luck!!
@@MADEbyAP I DID IT!!!! 60-year old man did it! (not easy after Meniscus and Rotator Cuff surgery) but you inspired me and I got it...it took about 1.5 hours but that was only because I had to clean up the mess and stop to get more tools... BUT THANKS!!!
How do you extend your plug outlet?
I ended up getting a cord extender off Amazon. Works great since I only needed a few inches. amzn.to/3OfH0fq
Hey Mr. Plumber, I'm calling the shots now.
😂
A awesome video brother, now I will not have to call a plumber 😮
Niice!! Glad you found it helpful!
both of my sump pumps covers are sealed by the local Plummer do I just cut through the seal?
Sorry for the delay I was traveling! Hopefully you figured it out by now. I’ve never experienced a sealed sump pump situation but I would think you should be able to cut through it and replace the cover (or reseat it if the cut is clean). Sorry not much of a help here on that one!
I guess no check valve in your system?
Still WOW that was one quiet drainage. I have quiet sump pump envy. Bought a new same brand sump pump and hoping it will do the job.
Haha yeah it’s relatively quiet which is nice! And yes added a check valve after the fact but didn’t do a video on it surprisingly haha.
No check valve?
I had to laugh when you went to plug it in.😂
I wasn’t sure what was going to happen haha
I did not see if you hooked up the other PCV pipe that connect to it😢
I did! I just reassembled it in reverse order. Sorry I didn’t show that!
Thanks for this video! I watched and saw how easy it was and I wasn't so intimidated. It ended up taking about 15 minutes.
That's awesome! Yes, I was so amazed at how simple this replacement project was. Glad the video helped. Here's to a dry basement for years to come! :)
I am intimated. The gross water and bugs are my biggest problem. 🤢 Replacing the sump pump is the only repair request from the buyer for us to get our home sold. We must do this!
@@jennylhenry78 wow I’m so late to reply! Nitrile gloves are great for gross things like this. I hope everything went okay!!
@@MADEbyAP gloves 🤦😅 I should have thought about that. Well thankfully a plumber from our church was able to do it for much less than we expected and he passed along a warranty to the new owner. And he did it way quicker than it would have taken my husband and me. All is done and we've been moved for a few months now!
How did you fix the cord?
Hey Rob. I picked up this. It’s like a mini extension cord. So far so good! amzn.to/3FyyMcz
Well, mine wasn't quite as easy as this one. I actually had a sewage pump not a sump pump.
It took me nearly a day because I needed to shop for the correct pump and empty the basin. My cover didn't have a slot, just a hole, so that was a bit tricky.
Nevertheless, this video gave me the courage to do the job and I completed it. Saved me lots of money I am sure!! Thanks.
Even a girl can do it. 😍
Wow sounds like a big project! Glad the video helped give you the courage to tackle it! Go you!! 🙌🙌
Thanks brother. You made it look easy.
Thank you! Hope it helped!
Quote of the night "Holly Balls" made my night!
Haha I may make that the tag line of the show!
Just subbed going to home Depot right now I live in Connecticut and Hurricane Ida rain hit us very hard last night and pump felled after I don't know how many years but it felled We inherited this home 12 years ago my father-in-law built it in 1957 So it's time to go too Home Depot!!!!!!! Wish me luck🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Good luck!! And I’m with you. We’re in Jersey and got hit pretty hard too. The pump is still pumping though! Stay safe!
Thanks we're going to try this at my friend's house
Awesome, good luck!!
Realized my pump isn't working last night. This gives me hope I can do it on my own.
You got this!
Nice video. Appreciate the humor, encouragement and basic recommendations. Thumbs up.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for sharing this video. You’re awesome man!
So glad it helped!
Thank you for this video. Was just about to call a plumber to install a new sump pump.
Glad it helped!
i didn't see you hook up the pipe back to the other pipe?
In my situation it went in exactly the reverse way I took it out. Put the pipe from the sump pump back into the pipe going to the outside and tighten the coupling. Sorry that wasn’t clear!
Loved the vid. Mine just went out so I’ll be replacing it soon. Great editing btw
Thank you! And good luck with the replacement!
Thank you so much! Bout to fix ours soon!
Good luck! You got this!
Great video and love the funny/goofy ending to it....was it real younger you with a glove hat?
Anyways........I think you could have covered other basic malfunctions like a stuck float switch.....my pump works fine...but after turning on/off few times..it stops...and then I had to shove something into the sump well to forcefully activate it.......
Thank you! And it sure was me circa 1995 I think! And good call on the other malfunctions. Maybe I’ll do a follow up one of these days. I hope you were able to solve the sticking. That’s an odd one and I haven’t run into it yet (knock on wood).
Thanks so much for this! hoping this fixes the flooding in the basement. ❤️ Will update!
Please do and good luck!!
Noticed my sump pump running every 10-15 minutes several weeks ago and there was no rain (I sit on a water table though so not uncommon) and now, after a heavy rain yesterday...total silence (yikes!). Thanks for this video as I was going to call a plumber today.
Glad you found it helpful! Good luck with the replacement!
@@MADEbyAP mine is a non submersible. Can I replace with submersible?
Great vid did have to go deep sea diving tho
Haha thanks!
Made it look relatively simple I hope that it works out the same way for me I do appreciate your video
Please let me know! There was another person in the comments who ran into an issue where the well cover was glued in place, hopefully you don't run into that. But yes, the whole process is pretty straightforward for a swap out. Good luck and let me know how it works out!
I’m having a hard removing sump pit lid/cover, it won’t budge, its the same lid/cover as your.
I’m wondering if yours is caulked and sealed which is why it won’t budge. Check out this video and see if that helps. Good luck! ua-cam.com/video/F_oFN_uXmaU/v-deo.html
Thank you kind sir replaced mine
Yay! Glad to help!
I had to replace my pump years ago, now I'm doing it again. After a huge rain storm!!!! I am flooded AGAIN!! So I brought in my old pump to replace it with the same kind of size that I needed and when I brought it home....IT DIDN'T WORK. So I took it back and they gave me a hard time Home Depot. They claim that that one is actually my old one (had my receipt) because it was still wet. Long story short... I took it back to another Home Depot and they gladly exchanged it. Note- plug it in at the store and make sure it works. Also shop at Menard's- cheaper and they exchange shit that don't work without a hassle.
Wow! That’s crazy. Glad that you eventually got it returned. We don’t have Menards up here in Jersey but I’ve always heard great things about them! Thanks for sharing your story. Wild! Assuming that everything is honky dory now??
thanks for the video. you could have moved the camera so we could see it working
Yeah, that's come up a few times. I was young in my YT career. Learned my lesson. Hopefully it helped regardless.
Thank You Sir.
You are most welcome!
Very difficult! You lost me at matching the gear ratio of the transaxle to the headlight fluid leveler .. :-) Thanks a bunch sir!!
Just carry the one and then divide by the square root of pi!
Thank you 😊
Haha that look of satisfaction on your face after you got it turned on successfully was priceless. I actually have had a sump erupt a fountain in my face, was my own fault, very NOT fun getting Grey water all over you.
I was so happy with myself lol. And yikes! Grey water in the face?!?! So sorry that happened!
Thanks for the video
Absolutely! Hoped it helped!
Gonna try this to fix my sump pump
I hope it helps!
This video is fabulous! Thank you for your humor, honesty and just real life scenarios. I was extremely stressed about trying to replace this sump pump but feel like very confident now. Thank you! You made my day.
Oh good! Glad you liked it and found it helpful! Good luck with your replacement!
OMG, the ending!!!!! Can hear Nana's voice
3:39 *cracks knuckles* Let's get to it lol
Brilliant. Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
Why can't you use the extension chord?
Hi JJ. I believe it’s a safety issue. The instructions were very specific about not using one. So if you choose to do so just be careful and make sure your code allows for it!
@@MADEbyAP Thanks for the reply. Turns out the pump had a 9 ft chord.
You need a backup pump installed. By the time you realize it’s not working it’s too late. You will have a flood . Backup pump has an alarm to let you know something not right.
Excellent advice!
This is fantastic- clear, concise & that added touch of humor shoots it to the top of best instructional videos. Thank you. 👍
Thank you so much! Glad you found it helpful!
I wish you could show the water pumped out.
Ah sorry about that. I will say it’s still going strong and my basement is dry. So I call that a win!
Dude, this saved my life and my wallet
NICE! Glad it helped (and that your life and wallet are okay!)
Dude giving Blues Clues vibes
I hope that’s a good thing haha. I actually have never seen it. I missed out.
LOL Rooster! Thanks for the info. I think I can do this now! ♡
Haha these are the shenanigans that kept me out of the good schools lol. Glad the video helped!! Good luck!
@@MADEbyAP You'll be pleased to know... I did it! LOL Yeay me. Thanks again! :)
@@selfretired3025 congrats!!!
Definitely better than spending 700 bucks
Amen!
Thanks. God bless
Ok why are you putting put pipe with new pump ?
Hiya! What’s a put pipe?
Thanks man 🙏🏽 just saved me hundreds if not thousands.
So glad to help! Good luck!! Feel free to share with others who might benefit too. Stay safe!
Kind of dramatic.. You demonstrated nothing after you screws pipe into the new sump pump. No check valve? Did not show the water being pumped out after you lowered it… Was the outflow pipe the exact same length as old pump?
Hi there and good point on not showing the basin after installing the new pump. At the time was still relatively new to documenting on UA-cam! I did not put a check valve I just did a one to one replacement. The pipe didn’t need to be modified either, I just needed to add the reducer valve. Thanks again for the feedback!
Who else is watching this after Ida?
No check valve
This video could’ve easily been 4 min. 6 min I’ll never get back.
But then you’d miss out on my shining personality!
Wish you could come and replace mine lol
It’s easy! You got this :)
here I am watching paying a plumber $1,034 for a sump pump😅
I am so so sorry. Ugh.
YES OUR CHILDREN SUFFERED, WERE TARGETED YES
Just like the washer drain pump 25 vs 580
Hi there! Not sure I understand. 25 vs 580? What does that mean?
@@MADEbyAP the drain pump to do it yourself 25,a plumber 580😊
Ty sir
You are very welcome!
Hello
Way too much chatter dude,, good video though
I’m working on balancing personality with helpfulness. I’ll get there one day haha. Thanks for watching!
This video should be half as long.
But then you’d miss out on my shining personality!
Comedy ends at 0:53
🤕
Yeah, not as easy as you made it out to be. My sump is probably 5-8 times deeper than that and I managed to break the PVC hauling the old pump out with a chain. This is the most disgusting job ever. I would love to pay a plumber hundreds of dollars to do this, unfortunately they are hard to find and don’t show up.
Oh no, sorry to hear that! Were you able to fix it?
Most annoying video I’ve ever watched. He could’ve explained all of this in half the time he spent digging around.
It was more like listening to blues clues on Mr. Rogers
My feelings = hurt 😢
Too much talking! Why do so many UA-cam presenters try to be entertaining??? Just get to the matter at hand. Sump pumps are NOT funny.
Not only are they not funny. They suck too!
Wow that sucked
😂
Look, I know youtubers think they are hollywood stars. But please toss the ego and trash entertainment and just cut to the chase.
UA-camrs should also be aware that many sump pump wells are used for sealed radon remediation systems. This video doesn't even mention radon.
Hey now, how am I supposed to get my pilot picked up if I don't at least pretend to be a Hollywood star? I mean, dress for the role you want, amiright?
love the video 2012 christmas eve dog that sleeps in basement for what ever reason it loved to sleep there is at basement door barking at 3 am i opened the door flipped light on water everywhere . i ran out to the garden pond judgement call hooked it to the garden pond pump drained basement out a window . 6 30 am i'm at hardware store only pump they had was 60 $ pump from impulse buy with not much choice from company called vevor 1/3 hp never heard of them speed ahead 2024 vevor pump making odd noise but still working still works why gamble pulled out today pre ordered and put new vevor 1/2 hp upgraded 100$ 90$ most places i'd come to find vevor makes almost anything well pumps which is the pump in my well. was unknown till i had pressure tank failure in december the guy who installed the well and pump told time to consider new pump soon any how he explained they make loads of stuff bee hives lawn equipment etc kinda have no ill regret about rigid i did consider them quality company i think we use them to snake drains at work were am i going now with google can review things easier oh and yes so do not rule out $60 pump i had no choice but it lasted 11 years still works just noisy i'll keep it as back up i hope never need to use also Vevor sump cord in our house was to short also 10 ft cord was not long enough not under stand why such short cords great video gave you a thumbs up all the way you looked like a pro
Thank you so much for the comment and thumbs up! What a story!! Agree, hopefully you never need to break out the back up! It’s also interesting to see what these companies all produce. I was working with a partner on promoting their faux Christmas trees. Come to find out they also produce overhead garage lighting and tractors haha. Fascinating. Well here’s to a dry basement. Thanks for watching!!!
Ignore the naysayers, you made a helpful video. Thanks. I had.. .no idea that easy.
@murphy4yt thank you so much. I appreciate the note!!
