From "Melody Master: Don Redman & His Orchestra" 1934 short film starring Don Redman which is included amongst "Vintage Shorts" intro to " Dames" DVD, (Ruby Keeler, Dubin & Warren score, Busby Berkeley choreo.) 1934
According to the Chicago Defender Dec 22, 1934, Red (the tall one) died after a stay in the hospital. He must have gotten sick rt aftef making this short film, sadly.
Actually , this song was a part of the tin pan alley genere of songs that covered that were in 1928,considered exotic places. Written by Harry Warren who by the way wrote tunes like "I only have eyes for you ""42nd st" and Lullaby of Broadway.
OK....I WAS WRONG! I thought this was a young Leo Watson,This is NOT LEO WATSON! I cannot find ANYTHING about this act! This may be the only time they appear on film. I cannot find anything on "Walter Struggs" either!
Historical fact is not in dispute - yet, "historical" is operative: "now", clearly, is not, "then". As all times change, so must we - that is also fact: either that, or, impotently, observe the times change, around us. I don't think anyone suggested "abolishing" a term - but the fact remains, it is *now* an anachronism. It is upon people with any sense to recognise the fact and act accordingly - often that is as simple as a disclaimer and limited use of a term. There is no need for hysterics.
this 'soundie' is fantastic but that is not Leo Watson listen to this then listen to any Watson song and you'll see that no way are they the same guy not to take anything way from either but they aint the same wish there was more film of red & struggie anybody have anything PLEASE share with us
@dancerqueen226 - Coon Act was a term used during these 1930's days. It is a matter of history . no disrespect - Only an accurate description of the type of performance - like some people call some songs today Gangster Rap- and in the future this term may well be banished as a slander against the performers,,, but in fact - it accurately describes the type of performance- Coon Act - should not be abolished as the most accurate term to describe this - because it is a historical FACT-
Your are full of (fill in the blank-----------) That is NOT walter Scruggs! Who the hell is Walter Scruggs? The shorter person in the video is none other than "Scatman" Leo Watson!!!

This is the best thing that's ever happened to UA-cam!
Great performance by two energetic entertainers. Nagasaki written in 1927 by the equally engaging Harry Warren (composer).
The little guy in the background in the white suit on the right hand side waving the stick at about 1:52 is Don Redman.
Love it!
Excellent scat singing...delightful, funny presentation. Seriously good music and entertainment. Natural talent refined to a high level.
Grandfathers of hip-hop... Love these guys!

The intro proves hip-hop existed before the 70's
Are you sure the shorter guy isn't Leo Watson? He scatted on this song with Gene Krupa's orchestra many years later.
