Such a great topic and discussion. You guys nailed it. I play with some guys who have never broken 100 and refuse to play the forward tees. I play the forward tees whenever I can. I don’t have the distance off the tee to play 6200-6800 yards. As you guys pointed out, if you have to hit a 3 wood to get on the green on a par 4 you’re playing the wrong tee box. I play for fun! I stay in my lane and play 5800 yard max distance.
my coach started me from red. I am a gorilla size male. I am ok with it; cos he told me it is to help me by cancelling out the stress of the extra distance. I moved up to white after 10 classes; when he moved me to blue when i had 23hcp from white. I am now challenging 18hcp from blue. There are guys who kept laughing at me for playing from red/white when i wasn't with my coach, but i ignored them. I am just glad that i was able to progress gradually going through the logical progression, as it allows me to focus on practicing to have consistency on my swings.
That’s awesome! And good for you for sticking to it! That is probably the most difficult part for progressing: letting go of your pride. Thanks for your comment!
I struggle to break 100 and always play from the blues...I recently played from the senior tees at a course I previously shot 109 and had a great time shooting a 94..... I am 69 years old and my average drive is about 180.......
Great video and advice from both of you and I agree with the short game making or breaking your handicap. I was once told to find what tee I should play that would give me a fair challenge is to take the distance I hit my stock 5 iron and multiply it by 36 for 18 holes or multiply it by 18 for nine holes. the number I get I should match it to the total yardage that's close to it. 5 iron distance 190 x 36 6840.
I was thinking about this topic just this week, on Memorial Day I went with my father in law down to Palisade Golf course by Manti. He is over 70 and plays from the front tees, while I should be playing from whites. he told me why don't you just hit with me from the fronts, so I did. No one judge me, we had a lot of fun and I was trying out new things one the like hitting a 3 iron in a spot that should have been a hybrid shot. It was a fun 18 holes, maybe even 36 holes as we played a lot of 2 ball just trying different shots and clubs.
Bryson was just telling Micah Morris(who’s trying to go pro)that one way to get better is play from the front tees and get used to breaking 60. Mentally you get over whatever block you may have about going low, and it also helps your short game cuz it forces you to hit awkward yardage shots. Also anytime you score you have to chip and putt well. Thought it was good advice.
I usually go by yardage and not necessarily tee color. I’m an 11 hcp and I like to play between 6300-6500. Most of the time that’s the blues but on some of the longer courses I play the blues are 7000 or close to that and the whites are the 6300-6500 set. And when I decide to play a different tee, I’ll usually move up more often than I’ll move back.
Great content and feedback. I think this is the best video so far of the few videos I’ve watched on this topic. Everyone’s video has good insight too. Thanks so much. ⛳️
Awesome guys! Thank you so much for responding and getting an answer to my question. I kept researching this and was seeing that the handicaps needed to be adjusted, but now I realize the data was outdated, before the WHS was created. Thanks for putting my mind at ease! You guys da best! 👍
I have often heard that if you take your 5 iron distance and multiply it by 36, should give you your maximum yardage for the tees you should be playing.
A friend of mine plays most of the holes with me from the whites at our home course. But there are about 4-5 holes he plays from the senior tees and it’s fine
I just started golfing and went with a friend who got me into golfing and while there we ran into another friend and his gf so we ended up playing with 4. By the end of the second hole we stopped and waited for the duo behind us and the single behind them to go. We played two more holes at the whites before switching to the reds to avoid having to always let people pass us and keep moving. It was a nice feeling as a beginner to birdie a par 5 playing from the reds as i normally bogey to triple bogey it from the whites
Sometimes it's nice to play the same tees for convenience in a group. Also it's refreshing to play from different tees to get different perspective, work on different clubs/distances and learn how to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The best analogy I've read about which tee box to play, take your honest 5 iron distance and times it by 36 or your honest driver distance and times it by 28. The total is the 18 hole yardage you should play.
Thanks for the content which brings a good perspective. I completely agree that golf should be fun (unless for pro which golf is their life). I just started golf 2 years ish, 14.6 handicap and while I’m not that very young anymore (48 this year, even my physiology may seem a bit younger than 48 years males commonly be), I am still the so called ‘short hitter’. My current total average drive is only 190-200 yards (could rarely reached 220-230 ish in very good days, and carrier best of 268 - but with down hill fairway, so it rolled much), while my average wood 3 is 175. With that in mind, I play from the white tees unless I have to move back, which I may not feel more fun. Given to my age which is not getting younger obviously, I don’t know if I could still manage to add distance, but for now I’m happy playing forward.
I would love to hear your opinion on playing the senior tees and having your handicap reduced by 6 shots for doing so. I'm a sr. golfer and had the option of playing the senior tees last year in my league. I chose to play them and every 9 hole match I had I gave up 3 shots. After doing it for a season I think I'm better off going back to the whites and getting my 3 shots back.
Dang! Your handicap should adjust over time, but if it doesn’t adjust with your league (which would be odd), then it might be worth going back to white if that makes it more competitive. Ultimately it might be best to do whatever makes the game more enjoyable.
Guys: great video, but I have a very important question. I'm taking over our handicap system for our golf league and need an answer to this question: With the new handicap system, do we still need to adjust handicaps during stroke competition for players playing different color tees? For example, if a 10 handicapper playing from blue tees plays against a 10 handicapper playing from the white tees, would you need to adjust the higher handicap (upward) by the difference in the course ratings for the blue and white tees? HOPE YOU CAN FIND AN ANSWER FOR ME!
Great question! With the new WHS, Course Handicap calculation now includes a Course Rating minus par adjustment. This means that the benchmark for all players has shifted from their respective Course Rating to par. As a result, as long as par is the same from each set of tees being played, no Course Handicap adjustment is needed. In other words, the new calculation automatically accounts for the Course Rating difference, which makes it easier for golfers to have a fair game when they are playing from different tees. (Source: www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/members/world-handicap-system-playing-a-golf-match-from-different-tees.html)
Nobody cares about good players playing the closer tees. The issue is the bad player playing from the back tees. Yes, they’re paying but when they’re slowing down the pace, it infringes on the other paying patrons.
You need to play the tees that give you an opportunity to hit mid irons or less into the par 4 holes. If you are constantly using a hybrid or 5 wood, move up to a shorter tee!
I know I need to sometimes not play the tips if they’re over 6900, but as a 7 handicap, I always want to break 80, and I feel like it doesn’t count if I don’t play from the tips. Most courses don’t stretch that far though.
Thanks for the view and comment! The tips are a great challenge and if you have the distance, go for it! Our biggest indicators for which tees you should play from have to do with, how easy to reach par 5's are, and on par 3's and 4's are you having to pull out your 3 or 5 wood often.
@@GolfAscending at the course i normally play, a PAR3 was 175metres/190yds from white. I just played it like a PAR4 LOL. I would drive with i7, then another i9 to be on the green. Bogey is a good result when i had 35hcp. That was 1 year ago, and as my comment above, as i was able to progress logically, i can now reach the 185m on green with H5.
@@l.sracing9022 Sometimes it is a great strategy to play a hole with the mentality of having an "extra" stroke. It helps eliminate poor decisions and promotes safer play!
70 years old here... when I play the forward tees there tends to be a much smaller landing area because I still hit it decent... moving back a tee or 2 makes the game easier...go figure...
I’m a near scratch golfer, but the tips at my home course are just too long for my distances. It’s 7,015 yards. I generally play the next set up from there. It’s 6,520. This puts the fairway bunkers in my landing area, with driver. 2/4 par 5’s are reachable, with 2 great shots. The other 2 par 5’s I can’t reach in two. We will sometimes even play the next tee box up(6,005), when the course is soft, or we’re playing scramble matches, for lower scores. I can carry all the fairway bunkers from there, and all the par 5’s are reachable. I don’t like these tee boxes, when the course is firm. It’s too easy to hit through the fairways(on the doglegs), and into hazards(weeds). I’ve even played the front tees before, and just like you said…. The course sets up differently from each tee box.
Absolutely. Gives a different playing experience. And players should consider different tee boxes for different courses. Not all white or blue tees are the same.
I wasn’t even aware that seniors could hit from the red tee boxes. I will be playing my first 9 holes next week and planned to use the tee boxes behind the reds (they are gold) and in front of the whites. Could it be that the gold are for seniors?
Some courses have different colors and set ups. At a course we often play, the Golds are behind the blues, and in front of the blacks. And at our home course, the “blues” are green.
I'm a senior and the tees that the PGA say that I should use is 3600 Yds. Unfortunately there are only 8% of the US courses that have tee this short. Should I play for the forward tees or move up into the fairway to a point that corresponds to the distance that I hit a golf ball?
@@GolfAscending Thanks for the reply. But if golf is supposed to be fun, at the existing tees it's not. I'm tired of hitting a driver on almost every hole including Par 3s. If the forward tees are too long you can tee it up in the fairway. There is no shame in that, ultimately you want to play where it will give you a little bit of a challenge, but still enjoy playing all the clubs in your bag.
I think you over complicate the decision. If you’re not able to get to the green in regulation you’re playing too long. I also like the Sam Snead remark of playing the close tees until you can par the hole.
You can play from wherever you want normally. In tournaments though, you may have to play from where they tell you. Some scrambles make everyone hit from the blue tees. Many courses are now using different colors, up too five different tee boxes. Most that I play are blue, white, red and sometimes gold. I'm 71, play from the white tees unless it's a scramble. I ask my team which tee they want me to play. 100% of the time they say forward tees if it's allowed. I've only played the forward tees 1 time by myself and I shot an embarrassing low score. I still hit a decent drive so I won't move to the forward tees regularly until I lose at least 30 yards with my driver.
Yes, if you are playing most of the par 3s and you need more than a 7 iron... you are on the wrong tees. It should be based on power not age or gender. Only exception is new golfers, to speed up play should play closer tees or best ball.
As long as people keep referring to them as “ladies” or “senior” tees, men are always going to start from the whites. I only drive around 150, so according to the math, I should be teeing off from the reds. But because of what the tees are called, I’m doomed to 40+ HCP.
Very true. And that is something that is being changed on a course level, but on a social level, it will take longer for people to stop calling them that.

Im a scratch player from white / low handicap golfer from the the back tees.. i usually play where most of my playing partners tee off, which is generally the white tees.. in a way they almost seem color coded by heat association to the target.. i.e. red being the closest and hottest.. yes going back to the blues in most cases is a fun challenge but takes up way to much energy and thought to do almost every day for me.. but it does reveal where i need to work and my streghtens.. i like being able to drive within 150 yds on a par 4 and on or around the greens on shorter courses and within 200 yds in on par 5s.. so 250 out is not ideal.. yes it is mostly about the short game and approach shots for me.. but ego & curiousity will push me to the tips like the pros or if u decide to do the US Open.. or preparing for a tournament.. which is whole new topic in itself.. (the green tees) nwy good insight 🦅🏌️♂️ 😎 yes play to the course, ur distances and to have fun. It is usu lonely from the Blues befitting the name.. Golf Mantra more birdies = more fun! 😂
Great comment and advice! Thanks for sharing!
