Hey Shane, have things changed regarding Patching a record in a Collection since you made this video? When I follow these steps my Patch actually Adds a Record! I have to do a Lookup in the Patch function to find the Record, and then it will Patch. Is it just me? Thanks mate.
Hi Dave - Ran into the same issue myself today. Take a look at the comment from Prabir Choudhury from about a week ago. He replied to his comment with a solution that worked for me. Good luck!
great video. Have you discovered a way to use forms with collections? The collection shows up as an option for the datasource but it doesn't recognize it when trying to add fields. It looks like powerapps doesn't support this functionality yet. What I've actually tried doing is setting the data source to my sql table, adding fields, and then switching back to the collection, which is basically a copy of the sql table. I'm using the collection to store the records on start so I don't have to make frequent calls to the database. It's a shame forms can't officially be used with collections w/o a work around.
One of MANY great videos! This helped me greatly! I'm trying to go one step further in the Collection area. I have a form for requesting Exchange resources. Hey Shane! Your videso are very easy to follow! Thanks so much! I have a question: Is it possibile to a Sharepoint list that contains a column "stakeholders" which is a type Choice, multiple choices allowed, modifiable? In powerapps someone is able to type out a new stakeholder and is it possible to update and add this new item to a the sharepont list choices?
It is. SharePoint will let you patch in a choice that isn't in the current list. I have done it messing around without issue but not sure how it plays out. Use this video patch in the value. ua-cam.com/video/gsk14D-CYRE/v-deo.html I have this on my list of videos to make in the future.
hi Shane, how do you use Collect on a Multi-Choice combobox, so my collect will gather the multiple selection from a combobox as a table? I watched this video and the Patch video and can't get it to work! Thanks, awesome video!
Hi Shane your videos are very much informative. I need a help. I am totally new to Powerapps. I want to add the picture to the sharepoint list with other list column data in the same form and user will have a remove button too to change the picture again. So basically in new form user would be able to add the photo(from gallery) and then could change it in edit form and would be able to see in the view form.
Hey Shane, in some of your previous videos you mentioned "=" is actually ":" in PowerApps. But in this video, ~18:55 ,you use the formula If(Edit = true, DisplayMode.Edit, DisplayMode,View)....wondering why sometimes PowerApps likes the "=" and others it only accepts the ":"
Quick question. I've got a gallery showing data that I want to filter by a the value in a column of a collection. Like only show items #2, #4,#5,#12. I'm banging my head trying to figure out how to make that work. I can filter the gallery by a single value just fine, but making it only show specific items... Thanks for all the great videos, I've learned so much from them.
Hello Shane I have a question, I have a table in which one field is another collect, how can I patch that table that is inside another, thanks for the help, excellent channel!!!
Hi Shane thank you for doing these videos. Have you covered Auto Generating an ID? I would like each new record to auto-populate an ID based on the last ID in Excel.
I haven't..... My first thought is to use the Last function to get the last record in the Excel and then just make your new ID something like Sum(LastRecordID, 1) probably easier way but that is first thought I have. Hope it helps.
Hello, Shane Thanks for the video it's really helpful. Wondering if you can answer a question related to the collection. I want to remove items from a collection based on another collection. Not sure how to do this though. I tried RemoveIf and couldn't get it working. Basically what I want to do is to remove columns from my first collection if my fist collection's date column matches with my second collections's date column. Help will be really appreciated. Been stuck with this last couple days. Thanks.
1 hour after I posted this comment I found a solution for this. Just commenting here if anyone else is looking for this. ForAll(colSubmitted, RemoveIf( colSaturdays, Date = submittedDate )) here it will remove all columns from colSaturdays collection where Date column in colSaturdays match with submittedDate column in colSubmitted.
Hey Shane, Thanks for the video and all the other ones you put out, they really help me out. I have a question about how collections are stored in memory and I was hoping maybe you could shed some light on this. For instance, if I were to create an web store in powers apps, and I wanted to create a collection of selected products to populate a gallery, how long does a collection stay in memory and who will have access to it. I would want to make this site publicly facing, with the customers not having any unique identifier or set permissions for them. Thanks, Chris Benoit
Collections are just there for the user who is running the app. If you want to have more permanent data then store you items in a data source, like SharePoint or SQL.
Hello, Shane. The trainings are very useful but I have a question. You have grouped the Item Details field and set it as DisplayMode View. Then you made it editable with the help of an icon. How can we return DisplayMode.View again after editing is done?
Hi Shane, is there a way to have more "rows" than just title, subtitle and body (with no images) in a gallery? If I want the users to be able to edit more than 3 fields? thank you by the way for the awesome content, I'm new to powerapps and a big fan of your viedos !
Shane, I’m just starting to learn power apps, thanks for your videos, they’re awesome. The issue I’m having whilst putting this demo together. When I put the second lot of labels in at the bottom and group them, then apply the patch, rather than editing an existing record, it adds a new record, rather than editing the existing one in the gallery?
Hi Shane, thanks for the video, can you also please let us know how we can store values into CRM on submit (for Ex:- lead creation , i have few text boxes on view , on click of submit , data should go to CRM)
Shane Young that's how I've done it as well and it works very well in the collection however in the gallery when a new line is created it keeps the date chosen in the previous line meaning it doesn't clear the date fields, if it's as per design then it's fine it's not a biggy, it's just that our users in many instances they don't change the defaults maybe it will have to be a training issue from our side.....thank you
hi shane, i watched you video, that so usefull. but i have some question, how i can save the items of the collection into datasource( i mean Sharepoint list). thanks a lot for help
Hi Shane, hope it finds you well, I just started working in power apps and following your methods which are amazing, suddenly I faced an issue while updating my sql table records from power apps through patch function. The error is 'the formula has side effects and can not be evaluated', can you give some idea how to debug. I can explain more if you want. Hope to get a quick reply as I'm in the middle of a development activity
The text field did not change when you selected different records because you set the default property of the text box to the gallery info. Default only works as the first one. If you change the text of a box, it does not change again
This is a very nice video. Just discovered it. Do you know or do you know how can I export / imports those collections into a SharePoint List? Many thanks.
Collect(SharePointList, CollectionName) will work if the columns match. I am pretty sure I cover it in this video. ua-cam.com/video/MclJ_O9HvJQ/v-deo.html And this video gets deeper in the weeds. ua-cam.com/video/nkp9MrBHN-s/v-deo.html
Hello Shane. I have started to use powerapps and I have started to see all your videos since those are the best one I have seen so far! Congrats for the good work and keep it up!!! One question: I have done a draft app when the first step is to download the data from a onedrive folder, and don't have any problems with it since the default connection handles it pretty good, however when I run the app in Microsoft Teams the data is not uploaded. I have tried to execute the collection both "On Start" and on the "Visible" of the first screen but none of them have worked... Do you have any suggestion? I don't want to use a button to trigger the data to be downloaded. Thank you again!
Good afternoon. Sorry for the translation ... Very good tutorials !! This is what I need. it remains to know how to save the data in an excel database. Can you explain it? Greetings from Argentina! Thanks a lot. Leonardo
Hi Shane, thanks for making this so easy to understand! I'm trying to create an app that tracks some items for home improvements - dates for tiling, painting etc. So I have a screen with some cards in it, one for each stage. I'd like to then collect each of them on a separate line and then patch to be stored at the end, but can't figure out how to make that happen? So it would have columns for QuoteID, Stage, StartDate, EndDate, where stage refers to what's happening (painting, tiling etc). I'm also wondering how best to update records as well - if a date changes, and the quote is opened up again, how to collect that information and then when patching back how to overwrite the original record?
Hi Shane. Great video. How would this work if you're trying to patch multiple items? I created a checkbox and I want the data inputted on the text input to update everything identified with a checkbox.
Hi Shane, I want to build a line chart in powerapps but It seems to be that bowerapps doesn't has many useful options supporting that. Can you make a video for building charts in powerapps?
Can you make this same setup work with checkboxes? For example...have a gallery of items and go through and check some of them and the status is changed on just the selected items? I loathe checkboxes but have a project where it is what I am needing.
Yes. It is a lot harder than it should be though. What I usually do is put the data for the gallery in a collection. Then have the check box OnChange update the collection. Then process the collection.
Hi Shane! Let´s say a have the the source data in a sharepoint list. A person in the company needs to add records and sometimes edit this data every day with this powerapp app. Does it make sense to use collection in this situation?
Dear Shane, how do I relate collections to Excel spreadsheets for example? I would like to be able to pass this information to somebody and preferably on excel. Thanks for the videos, they are truly awesome and easy to follow.
Shane Young hey ! Thank you for taking the time to write me. I think I am not clear with how “patch” works. As far as I know or understand, “collection” ‘s informations stays saved in the app and it is not “connected” to any data source like an excel sheet for example. How the saved scanned codes are saved in some sort of datasource ? My app is a simple inventory tracker for the tools everyone uses.
Hey, Shane...I know this is a super-old video, and I thought you had more recent ones about collections but couldn't find any. Basically, I've found that a bunch of folks out there misuse/abuse collections to do things they probably shouldn't (like loading thousands of rows from a data source to get around delegation warnings and ending up with bloated, poorly performing apps). I'm wondering if you do have another video along those lines or have another resource I can point those folks to?
I have talked about Collections but not dedicated video. :( I will add it to my list to redo. Thanks for the idea. I am with you. I hate seeing Collection abuse.

- When using collections, should I be concern about delegations issues?

There isn’t an auto id. Collections are temporary so if you want to keep the data thenyou need a data source.

Love the videos :) learning PowerApps with you
hi Shane, how do you use Collect on a Multi-Choice combobox, so my collect will gather the multiple selection from a combobox as a table? I watched this video and the Patch video and can't get it to work! Thanks, awesome video!
Collect(yourCollection, combobox.selecteditems) should work
Hi Shane your videos are very much informative. I need a help. I am totally new to Powerapps. I want to add the picture to the sharepoint list with other list column data in the same form and user will have a remove button too to change the picture again. So basically in new form user would be able to add the photo(from gallery) and then could change it in edit form and would be able to see in the view form.
If you want to use a form then you will need to do it as attachments.
They like to keep us guessing. 😀 : means equal only with update context and patch/record stuff I think. If you always use =
Look into the in operator. It is possible 😀
Hello Shane I have a question, I have a table in which one field is another collect, how can I patch that table that is inside another, thanks for the help, excellent channel!!!
It is possible but tricky. Something like Patch(collection, RecordToPatch, {FieldToPatch: {RecordFieldInsideTheField: ValueYouWantToSave}})
ForAll(colSubmitted, RemoveIf(
colSaturdays,
Date = submittedDate ))
here it will remove all columns from colSaturdays collection where Date column in colSaturdays match with submittedDate column in colSubmitted.
Awesome
Hey Shane,
Thanks for the video and all the other ones you put out, they really help me out.
Thanks,
Chris Benoit
Collections are just there for the user who is running the app. If you want to have more permanent data then store you items in a data source, like SharePoint or SQL.
Hello, Shane. The trainings are very useful but I have a question. You have grouped the Item Details field and set it as DisplayMode View. Then you made it editable with the help of an icon. How can we return DisplayMode.View again after editing is done?
Hello, I found out how. Thank you for your videos.
Glad you got it.
Hi Shane, is there a way to have more "rows" than just title, subtitle and body (with no images) in a gallery? If I want the users to be able to edit more than 3 fields? thank you by the way for the awesome content, I'm new to powerapps and a big fan of your viedos !
Yes you can! Edit your gallery and you can insert a label or any other control.
Maybe this video will help. ua-cam.com/video/MclJ_O9HvJQ/v-deo.html
Hi Shane, thanks for the video, can you also please let us know how we can store values into CRM on submit (for Ex:- lead creation , i have few text boxes on view , on click of submit , data should go to CRM)
It shouldn’t be any different. Just need to know the field names
Hi Shane, thank you very much for the video. Can you please assist. I'm strggling with the date picker, how do I ClearCollect the date picker field?
ClearCollect(colDates, {chosenDate: datepicker.SelectedDate})
Shane Young that's how I've done it as well and it works very well in the collection however in the gallery when a new line is created it keeps the date chosen in the previous line meaning it doesn't clear the date fields, if it's as per design then it's fine it's not a biggy, it's just that our users in many instances they don't change the defaults maybe it will have to be a training issue from our side.....thank you
hi shane, i watched you video, that so usefull. but i have some question, how i can save the items of the collection into datasource( i mean Sharepoint list). thanks a lot for help
Look for my video on save data. It is Halloween themed but should work.
That isn’t an error that is just the preview tool telling you it can’t preview that data
Thats was really useful, fast and even funny video, thanks a lot!
Glad to help.
The text field did not change when you selected different records because you set the default property of the text box to the gallery info. Default only works as the first one. If you change the text of a box, it does not change again
Whoops. Thanks for that. Sometimes I get caught up in making the recording and miss the little things. :)
I have not seen OnStart not work. Sorry
Good afternoon. Sorry for the translation ... Very good tutorials !!
This is what I need. it remains to know how to save the data in an excel database. Can you explain it? Greetings from Argentina! Thanks a lot. Leonardo
Add Excel as a datasource. Makes sure the Excel file has a table. Maybe this helps? ua-cam.com/video/-Z_13J02RPU/v-deo.html
Smart Presentation style...i like it. In Javanesse language is "Jos Tenan"
Thanks you! :)
Watch this video on patching. PowerApps Save Data - Patch, Collect, and ForAll ua-cam.com/video/MclJ_O9HvJQ/v-deo.html hopefully it helps.
Hi Shane. Great video. How would this work if you're trying to patch multiple items? I created a checkbox and I want the data inputted on the text input to update everything identified with a checkbox.
ForAll function
Hi Shane, I want to build a line chart in powerapps but It seems to be that bowerapps doesn't has many useful options supporting that.
Can you make a video for building charts in powerapps?
I should. The problem is I don’t do it often so you might know more than I do.
Great videos, helped me a lot! Thank you!!
Thanks 🙏
Very helpful! Thanks for great tutorials :)
Glad to help. 😀
Hi Shane!
Let´s say a have the the source data in a sharepoint list. A person in the company needs to add records and sometimes edit this data every day with this powerapp app. Does it make sense to use collection in this situation?
Without knowing more I would say probably a collection is not needed.
Dear Shane, how do I relate collections to Excel spreadsheets for example? I would like to be able to pass this information to somebody and preferably on excel. Thanks for the videos, they are truly awesome and easy to follow.
I think you just need to patch it back. Unless I am missing what you need to do?
Shane Young hey ! Thank you for taking the time to write me. I think I am not clear with how “patch” works. As far as I know or understand, “collection” ‘s informations stays saved in the app and it is not “connected” to any data source like an excel sheet for example. How the saved scanned codes are saved in some sort of datasource ? My app is a simple inventory tracker for the tools everyone uses.
Maybe this video will help. ua-cam.com/video/MclJ_O9HvJQ/v-deo.html
Is there a way to look through a collection and see if a certain text string exists within it and use that as a boolean value?
You could use the Search function to search a text column of the collection
