One of the Last of the "Great" 335s With a Factory Bigsby
1965 Gibson ES-335TD Custom Factory Bigsby.
This 16-inch-wide semi-hollow body guitar, with a solid maple block running lengthwise down the center, weighs 8.90 lbs. Laminated maple body with single binding on the top and back edges. One-piece mahogany neck with a nut width of just under 1 11/16 inches, a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4 inches and a typical wonderful medium thick '64 profile. Bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard with 22 original jumbo frets and inlaid pearl block position markers. Headstock with inlaid pearl "Gibson" logo and pearl crown inlay. Two-layer black over white plastic, bell-shaped truss-rod cover secured by two screws. Serial number "263181" impressed into the back of the headstock. Individual double-line Kluson Deluxe tuners with double-ring Keystone plastic buttons, each stamped "D-169400 / Patent No." on the underside. Two "patent-number" humbucker pickups with outputs of 7.25k and 7.54k. Each pickup with a small rectangular black label on the underside with "Patent No. 2,737,842". Five-layer black over white plastic pickguard with beveled edges. Four controls (two volume, two tone) plus three-way pickup selector switch, all on lower treble bout. Black plastic bell-shaped knobs with white markings and metal tops. ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic retainer bridge with metal saddles and special custom-ordered factory Bigsby tailpiece. Rectangular three-layer, black over white plastic cover engraved in white "Custom Made" and secured by two screws covering the 'unused' stud-tailpiece screw holes. Oval orange label inside the bass f-hole with the style "ES-335TD" and serial number "263181" stamped in black. There is some very light finish checking and some very minor belt-buckle scarring on the back (nothing through the finish). There are a few minor and insignificant surface marks on the body. There are a few small surface chips on the back of the neck, the most noticeable being a 3/8 x 1/4 surface chip just behind the eighth fret and some checking and minor edge wear to the headstock face. With all that said this spectacular guitar, one of the very last of the great 335s, is in exceptionally fine (9.00) condition. Housed in its original Gibson black hardshell case with four latches and orange plush lining (9.00).
Upon Phil's return, we need a Jared/Phil Jam!
I'd love to!!!
Miles Hoskins hell Yeah!
JJNicholsMusic I just recently discovered your music. Good guitar players come and go, great players inspire people with their talent and passion for the music. I can already tell you are the later and we will be listening to you for decades to come.. Enjoy the journey, you are definitely going places my friend
I wonder if Phil is coming back. A couple days ago someone on Twitter asked him "What's happening with Frettedamericana? Will you be back?" and his reply was "That's up in the air right now".
YES !!!
I personally am liking Jared James Nichols, thank you & frettedamericana.
Thanks Ed!!! Having a blast being able to test-drive all these monster axes!!!
you should buy this guitar, 2 of you are perfect match !
Hell yes! Showing people that the ES-335 can rock like a beast!
335's RULE!!!!
I am 100% stealing that bend trick
Actually heard John Mayer doing it a lot before. He often does it when playing Gravity live. Such a neat little trick
and gilmour even before mayer, and many before gilmour. he's not saying that jared invented it, just it is a cool trick.
Luís Felipe Riccordi and I didn't say Mayer invented it either, he just came to my mind first :)
Jared just freaking has all the basses covered from Rock, blues and other classics. Very inspiring.
I'm really digging the episodes with Jared. Such a well-rounded player and informative too... and he lets the guitar talk
too without trying to force it into whatever style he's most comfortable with. Give that man a raise!
I knew about and followed Jared's stuff for a little while before he took over for Phil X on this. So stoked he's on here because AS YOU CAN SEE, he kicks major ass. Such a unique player and he's so diverse with what he does. His fingers are guitar picks! Amazing Jared!!! Keep em coming!!!
Heeyyy, This cat and Phil should do a video together.... imagine the coolness of that
Damn Jared that thing Deserves to be kept in your hands I don't think anyone besides Phil or God himself can rock that beauty the way you can
Alex Lifeson could , just saying
Jeff Ccr Hence the term God himself lol
Jeff Ccr My man.
Liking these episodes guys, Jared brings something a little to the table, Dustin and Dave thank you.
Great playing! Jared is a sweetheart of a guy too!
That intro and outro is brutal! I want it in a song so badly.
Congrats on making it Jared!
Jared is an outstanding choice to "Phil" in for Mr. X.
His playing and vocal style are Perfect for Squeezing the Tone out of these Vintage instruments.
Best Guitar Demo Channel on UA-cam imo.
Watching this guy singing and playing makes me think Phil who? Great job man
Oh damn that's nice that sound when you turned up was just killer
I really enjoy these new demos.
I like that Derek Trucks bend!
love that plink plink sound, so cool
Awesome again. Nice one Mr Nichols.
Love this guys touch.
Awesome! Jared is cool as hell and a good player!
Love your playing Jared. It's all in the hands... Looking forward seeing you in Holland soon!
Great job Jared!!
I love my 335, it is my total go to axe. At 6'5 most guitars look like toys on me.
Glad you guys are uploading again.
Absolutely loving the vibe man.
3:43
jared got caught himself slippin haha Go ahead man!!! Gotta break in the dog bark over the cuss haha
Jared, I was and still am a huge fan of Phil.
Thanks to the exposure that Fretted Americana gave you, you've gained a new fan ;)
I want to see you live. When do you play in Paris?
Awesome Jared...!
That neck pickup through the super reverb sounded tastyyyyyy
R Douglas yeah the supet plus a 335 is always a great combo
Funky music. I like it 👍
He definitely saw that SRV guitar lesson video where he demonstrates how Clapton would play Hideaway. Nice!
I've said this before but Jared I fuckin love you dude!!!
dude! all right now, politician, mother natures son. loved it all
Wish he would have delved into some Alex Lifeson. he used his 335 on most of the early Rush albums. You could hear that tone with JJN and the Marshall at times.
John Vrabec Love seeing the Rush fans on these videos.
great Paul Kossoff playing Jared!
I suspect you would sound great playing any old guitar.
Thanks James!!!!
Thumb up for the BLS t-shirt :)
Every video just keeps getting better. Tones too!! That guitar is so fat and fuzzy sounding, but still clear. When I close my eyes I don't really hear a 335. Very unique sounding one you got there. Keep up the awesome work!!!
I loved watching Phil X, but this guy is awesome! Love your no pick style approach Jared. Keep on rockin JJN!!
I loved Phil X but Jared can jam! Loving the new vids. That 335 sounds great.
Awesome video! Thx
Jared James Nichols loving your groove man..... Nice replacement frettedamericana.
This guitar sounds like the perfect guitar for Jared!
3:42 wanted to say "fucking awesome" ... lel
I never like thrash on a great vintage guitar. Their Sonic horizon and beautiful nuances are greater than that.
love phil
but that.was.just.frigggin.goooood!!!!! keep him!
Thanks Rafi!
JJNicholsMusic Jared, just watched your interview with the Captn, dayum, that was inspirational! after that, played my partscaster for an hour pick-less! I can dig it! keepin an eye on you for sure! greetings from switzerland!
you mate totally rocked the shit out of this beauty!!
Jared, I'm a pretty big Phil fan and didn't think anyone could fit here but you're incredible and I enjoy watching these videos as much as when Phil did them. I know you hear it all the time (like Phil did with his belt buckle) but are those buttons a concern? Anyway, keep up the fantastic job man. I think these old semi hollows are some of the best rock tones. My favorite guitarist Alex Lifeson used a few semi hollows and it's some of my favorite driven tones. I have a PRS HBII and a 339 I think because I love the sound. Almost like the guitar is breathing and speaking not just the pickups. I'm rambling, great job JJN and Fretted Americana and team.
Phil and Jared should jam some time on the channel
Nice demos. I wanna hear that Page #1 that's in the back there
i like this bloke
to me jared seems like he puts more soul and feel in his playing no knock to phil but Jared's playing has got the feel...kudos!!!
So what if I'm watching yet again...
That's a mean guitar
Those pickups are hotter than Daquans mixtape.
I feel like JJN is just as crazy and extroverted as Phil, but he's dialing it back in front of the cameras. Maybe in the future JJN will let loose and scream at the camera the way Phil does.
Love the finger picking style. I play that way (it feel so natural to do so) as well but plugged in a plectrum still sounds better. That can be frustrating. Your style - tone sounds so good. Anyhow great video!
You killed it JJN. Now I love you, and I know those c*nts are going to take you away and I'll be sad.;-)
THANK YOU JARED!!!
I believe the TD stands for Tobbaco Burst Deluxe (Deluxe for the Bigsby)
Can we keep him!?
Hi Jared. I have been seeing more players lately using their thumb like you do.I was wondering about your thumb lol! Are you hitting the strings with a callous you have built up on your thumb or have you grown your thumb nail at the edge to use of plucking?
7:10 puts E string back on bridge smooth
Wich song does Jared play at 6:44? Nice bend trick, by the way! I'll try to work on it, my SG waits!
Henrique Rossi Di Gioia Manhães Politician, by Cream:)
Politician by Cream.
That sort of bend within a bend, is there a specific technique name for that? Amazing playing, as usual!
When someone as talented as Jared plays and makes a living being a total badass with his fingers. How would you calculate the amount of insurance needed on those magic fingers? Or is he like the rest of us lackeys with crappy St. Industrial.
Hey Jared: like your style man !!
What did the 64' neck profile have in particular, compared to other ones ? \m/
So as a general guide that is borderline useless in the real world where things were made by individuals by hand the mid to later part of the 50's had the bigger necks you would associate with a stereotypical les paul of that time evolving slightly over time hence the "holy grail" '59 profile. Around early-mid 60 the necks lost some depth. 1961-1963ish were the very thin necks you would typically associate with the first few SG's. '64-'65ish the necks got some meat/depth back. This is why some people (such as ed King/mick Taylor) prefer sg's/335 from this time period instead of the very early 60's ones. All of the above had 1 11/16" nut width. Late '65 early '66ish the nut width began to change into 1 9/16"-1 5/8". All that being said it's hard to generalize, they didn't go in the factory on New Year's Day and throw away parts and have dealers send guitars back. As an interesting side note I did have a chance to play a '53 les paul that had a neck that was not a "baseball" bat with a slight V most would associate with fenders. Other than that I have no experience with electric Gibson necks before 1956.
Thank you "T", whoever you are, for this detailed response :) I am not at ease with slim tapers, nor with baseball bats. I favor a reasonable nut width and a rounded back profile neck. I play a few guitars that have these characteristics, looks like this 335 has it all ! Cheers \m/
Anytime man. I'm just a fanboy/player like everyone else. Outside old Gibsons I don't know much in the vintage world. If your looking to pick up something like that an sg or 345 that's been refinished or had a pickup rewound isn't outrageously expensive as far as the vintage world is concerned. The only reason I know about the '64 specifically is because my pops has a 335/sg/firebird 3 all from that year. He is convinced the same guy made the necks on the ones he has. He noticed in the early 70's that the new guitars weren't the same as the ones even from as little as 5-10 years before. I guess once the Beatles and the Stones went on Ed Sullivan demand skyrocketed and corporate America got involved and did their best to make a dollar and ruin a craft. He is still in touch with the drummer in his old high school band. They said the day he bought the sg they all told him he was an idiot because he could have gotten a new one for $50 less.
"the day he bought the sg they all told him he was an idiot because he could have gotten a new one for $50 less." ha ha ! I guess it's worth 3x as much now :-)) I feel a guitar has to be "played in" before it can give its full potential. I always favored pre-owned ones. One has to be selective, but if you pick the right one... \m/
Honestly I don't think the value matters. Those are his only guitars these days and he plays all 3 regularly. I see them staying in the family for quite some time.
How much would the 1967 version of this guitar go for?
what beatles song was he playing?
Mother natures son and Day tripper.
Day Tripper
and a snippet of Yer Blues
Good catch, I missed it on the first pass! :)
I like this guy better than Phil X. He is more calm and not so hyperactive. Phil X is a fantastic player but gets distracted constantly.
606 Studios? Like the Foo Fighters studio?
Robert Maglicco yes
8:42 What is that
What happened to Phil-X????
Hey, this cat uses his fingers instead of a pick, so do I👍😁
What Beatles song is that
Mother Nature's Son
I too do the "bend within a bend". Although I sorta stole it from Steve Lukather.
I am loving Jared's playing and watching his videos. But I can't help but wonder what those metal vest buttons are doing to the back of those vintage guitars.
the guitars are fine and completely unharmed
57Strat777 have you ever played a guitar while wearing a belt? Or shirt with buttons? Did it instantly scratch and ruin the guitar 10 minutes later? Cmon
frettedamericana Lies.
come on please do that fool sg
Scott Gallacher They did
he makes good use of no pick but i feel as if he would be awesomer WITH one.
I used to rock a pick!! Maybe I'll bust one out on the next videos!!
rock on, long gone daddy-o!
OH MY GOD SOOOOOOOOOOOOO RAD!
WANGO TANGO!
HEEEY its Jared a fine phine Phil replacement
its a bendception
jared is cool but i miss phil hes
Jared seems to ge WAY more excited about the guitars than Phil. Phil makes more of an ass out of himself
If you ever have the chance to play a 335 in a band setting listen and see how much fatter you sound compared to the other guitarist playing a Les Paul! Huge and fat! The LP will sound like a Fender in comparison!
BRING BACK PHIL X
I can’t stand his playing his vibrato his style there’s just something about it but I do respect as a guitar tho I like Phil x better when he used to do this
Jared have so much idiosyncrasy - character in his playing who can't fitted to do reviews! He don't leave you to hear the instrument or the amp.Great player, "but..."For reviews i prefer Phil X.
