Norm never played a character. That’s absolutely him. He would however, pretend to be dumber than he actually was. He was a genius that graduated high school at 14. But in an interview he once said “you don’t want to be on stage and come off as the smartest guy in the room, it will make the audience start to resent you”
He told the dopes on the view he had only ever read 6 books. They absolutely believed it.

The elevator joke was the beginning of one of the best bits Norm did on Conan usually called "Norm's Wife is a Real Battle Axe". One of the funniest talk show punch lines. Speaking of Conan, has Ash seen "Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, and Conan Help a Student Driver".
Love the Norm! Keep it coming! Norm was the master at taking 80, 100, 150 year old jokes that had been mostly forgotten, updating it into a story about his life, and killing with it every time. Virtually anything of him on Leno Letterman or O’Brien is great. There’s all his old videos from when he was the newscaster on SNL in the 1990s. And then finally his there is his standup, which is also excellent. Some of the long jokes he tells are called:

Norm is my favorite comedian. He did Saturday Night Live weekend updates when I was watching the show. He was fearless with his comedy and told the jokes he wanted to tell. His style speaks to me. He did a couple great movies too.

The fact that so many legendary comedians spoke publicly about how they consider him one of the funniest people ever is a testament to his genius. Too many to name but among them are: Dave Chapell, Bill Burr, Louis C.K., Jim Gaffigan, Dennis Miller, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, Adam Sandler, Shane Gillis, Mark Normand, Dave Attell, Joe Rogan, Bert Kreisher, David Spade, Sarah Silverman, Anthony Jeselnik, Whitney Cummings, etc, etc, etc
No one does it like Norm. Once his stories get inside your head they never leave. I miss knowing he's around thinking of ways to make us look at our own silliness.
Loved Norm. He is one of the Goat's. Like you said, classic joke teller. His ability to craft a joke was uncanny.
For us in Canada, he's a National Treasure! I've had the chance to meet him in person when was a waiter and going to school and he was a really nice guy. What you see is definitely him. He inspired so many comedians that are doing well today. He's sorely missed...

Norm's brother was a fantastic reporter for CBC here in Canada. I remember it blew my mind when I put 2 & 2 together. Norm's persona was such that you could mistakenly think he is dumb but he was in fact extremely intelligent. It was sweet to see the 2 brothers together because they clearly loved each other but ascetically Neil would be dressed as a serious reporter should & Norm would be dressed as Norm 😂
Norm was the best comedian in the biz. The best that ever was and perhaps "ever will be".

Loved Norm, RIP Norm.
Sadly, Norm MacDonald the last 10 years of his life was dying from cancer, and nobody knew it. He took anti-cancer drugs which made him heavy. Some of his jokes, like at the end talking about a worthless life, and then committing suicide, was Norm talking about his own cancer, and probably the many times he might have thought about suicide for himself. Very sad. If you look back at the many jokes that Norm did, a lot lot of them, he was letting people know that he was dying in some joke that he did, without actually saying it straight out. Very sad! Somebody mentioned on here that Norm was the commedian's commedian. That is very true. He would make the best commedians in the world laugh their brains out with his delivery and punch lines. Loved your analysis at the end guys of Norm's style. Thanks for the reaction.

I miss Norm. R.I.P. But on to happier things. The Warning have released a new song from their 4th album, to be released June 28th. The song is called Automatic Sun and the official video is from the outdoor Tecate Pa'l Norte Festival. You would be surprised at how they have changed.

Norm didn’t have one punchline. He had dozens of mini punchlines spread across the joke
Norm MacDonald got fired from Saturday Night Live because he would not stop doing O.J. Simpson jokes on weekend update. I don’t remember if it was Lauren Michael’s, the creator of Saturday Night Live, or if it was the NBC President that was friends with O.J. Simpson, and told him to cool it on the OJ jokes. Well… Of course Donald did not stop, and even more jokes. So they fired him.
You should watch his monologue when he came back to host Saturday Night Live a year and a half later.

There is an 11 minute video of nothing but Norm making OJ Simpson jokes. You guys should watch that one. Those are what got him fired from SNL. One of the execs was close friends with OJ and he wouldn't stop telling the jokes.

Loved Norm.
Norm got fired from the show after several years because an NBC executive was close friends with OJ Simpson, and didn't like all of the jokes being made about OJ Simpson. Norm was otherwise very popular, and was definitely not cancelled in the court of public opinion. Just one thin-skinned boss had a grudge.

Andy Dick was in a few sitcoms and always claimed he was straight. However, he was caught several times, under the influence and admitting he is gay or bi, or multi.
I think he kept it secret because he wanted to spend his last years delivering comedy without letting cancer ruin that as well.
