It’s estimated that a girl (aged 1 to 5) dies every 4 minutes in India due to sex-discrimination. In the vast majority of cases this isn’t direct murder, just neglect. Parent’s aren’t willing to spend the amount of time and money on medical care for daughters that they are for sons.
However the main cause for the high sex-ratio (in both India and China) is sex selective abortions. China’s one-child-policy (abolished in 2015) and the dowry system in India are the main motives for parents.
We are perhaps unlikely to see the Returning Solider Effect ever again. As modern warfare advances, smaller proportions of the population are being mobilised and less and less are being deployed on foot in “gun-to-gun” combat. We may have to wait till WW3 or a major technological collapse before more research can be done.
Liechtenstein (not China) has the highest sex-ratio at birth in the world (125). What about the sex ratio of Vatican City?
I mean we learn more and more about how connected our psyche and our body is. Could it be so that when we humans are worried about a huge loss of men that is happening in the population it affects the male birth rate? It would make sense to some degree.
The preference for male children in China arises because within Chinese society sons are expected to provide for their parents in old age if they cannot provide for themselves, whereas no such duty applies in the case of daughters. To have a male child is therefore to have insurance against poverty in old age. Contrary to the narrative of most of the campaigners against the practice of aborting female children, the motive has nothing to do with 'sexism', but is driven by purely practical material considerations.

A recent study found that the major correlation for the sex of a child was the testosterone level of the father at conception. Young fighting men who survived were likely stronger and many possibly going without sex while also amped up from fighting, likely elevated their testosterone levels.
Nah. That effect rises and falls too quickly. Also people have to get married and plan lives, which doesn't happen immediately after a battle ends. The real effect comes from the nutrition that a soldier's wife or girlfriend enjoys. Well-fed and hormone-balanced mammals produce sons. The opposite produces girls. It's been proven in mice. Consider that a war wife basically gets an easier life living on the veteran's paychecks, healthcare and reduced mortgage. The soldier's perks allow the wives to enjoy a stress free lifestyle = more sons. Consider that the ultimate "spoils of war."
@@voltinator That's interesting, I would've thought though that the wife of a soldier, while, sure, she might have those benefits, would not necessarily be less stressed; consider having a husband returning from war with post traumatic stress, or injuries, and his absence all affecting the relationship- it would be a cause for stress. I think there's also a good chance of theoretical wife being more stressed having to deal with that, and thus possibly having less sons if that study on testosterone levels is accurate. (But I think it is, it makes sense.)
@@gaby5546 Those are anecdotal cases man. First of all not all soldiers coming back from war have wives. They find wives after the war and "post traumatic stress" doesn't stop them from seeking sexual partners. You think that the MILLIONS of post war babies were all lucky that their father's post traumatic stress didn't stop them from breeding? Post traumatic stress is generally overblown by the media because a lot of groups want sympathy and funds. You're also assuming the military experience is the same for all soldiers. Some soldiers remain as reinforcements, others work as guards, others as maintenance, medics etc. etc. Benefits of a house, healthcare and stipends make life infinitely easier for women hooking up with veterans. The same effect is found with women, with even greater concentration, who hook up with rich men. Stress eases with the arrival of the veteran husband because the parents know that BENEFITS ARE A-COMING! Wives with veteran husbands overall gain tons of benefits and generally live stress free lives compared to similar aged women without those types of husbands. If post traumatic stress was some sort of deal breaker you would have found large segments of the society that refused to work and go to church. This actually was the case with the creation of the Hell's Angels motorcycle gang, they formed after WW2 with many veterans. But overall you come back from war ready to have sex, mow lawns and work for your dad's roofing business.

Thanks for explaining more. Though I didn't mean I thought PTSD would stop veteran from reproducing, just that it could affect their wives. Maybe I wasn't clear.

It might be that they have on average just a little bit more survivability (e.g. slightly faster, slightly higher chance to survive injuries, slightly stronger, ect.) and these miniscule statistical advantages add up in large amounts of soldiers/time.

I'm surprised sperm speed wasn't mentioned. Y chromosome sperm are faster but don't last as long, so if sex is before ovulation X have the time to get in place and can wait for the egg. If after ovulation, simple speed favors the Y. My parents tried and succeeded in choosing the sex of all five of us.
There are a number of ways a shortage of men could cause sex to be delayed until the woman was ovulating and thus at her horniest.

This is super interesting! I'm from a tropical country near the equator and people tend to have more girls than boys here.
I think that has more to do with the types of cultures that are closer to the equator, those cultures favor a more relaxed lifestyle and women aren't as threatening to their husbands and do most the work. relaxed men produce more x

Some things aren’t explained yet. This is purely observational. Study’s are made where they count female/male babies from tall/short, young/old men and when the results have often the same outcome ~>( young man have more boys), they simply publish the information but there is no biological proof.

@XavierM Yes i like the idea of us being a simulation also, but something is clearly entering various processes on earth or it is doing it from its own thinking. One example is maintaining the male/female ratio, how the hell does it just happen. Also in evolution, if the formula for living on earth is to stay alive, reproduce and find food, how does an animal develop into something that would release extreme smell, or poison? Who decided on that? The animal itself has no clue why it releases poison or how it even came its a poisionous substance. Also whenever something is out of balance on earth, it goes ahead and tries to balance it out, even using apocalyptic changes in weather and such.

I believe, I read something that said the ratio of sperm containing X or Y chromosomes changes with environmental stress. Higher stress levels leads to higher (X) chromosome sperm expression which of course leads to higher rates of female (XX) babies.

-taller people typically are more muscular on average
-this makes it easier for them to carry more equipment
-this makes it easier for them to aim big guns
-taller people are more intimidating
-they make better leaders
-they give their enemies a combat disadvantage
-taller people have an advantage in hand to hand combat
pokezee king-wolf I’m not sure if you meant it to but the last line perfectly answers the question I had I think. Taller men have more advantages outside wartime, so they were more likely to stay at home.

The taller men surviving war more might have something to do with being more careful, since you are a bigger target to hit from afar, but simultaneously more menacing in close range.
It could be that taller men had an easier time finding high level positions. Also taller could have meant better nutrition which meant wealthy families.

Being an officer doesn't shield you from peril. In WW1, the subalterns (junior officers) had to be the first over the top. They had to lead by example. Consequently, the officer mortality rate was horrific. Also, in every war, officers are a tempting target for enemy snipers.

Just a thought, but aren't x sperm and embryo's more resilient than y sperm and embryos, at least in the first trimester? The male sperm swims faster but also dies faster, where as the female sperm swim slower but tend to reach the egg and survive for implantation. Not a scientist, just wondering.

4:00 y'all men are more likely to survive wars because there are less of them. Most people are of average height (obviously) and so there are less tall people joining war. That means that since shorter people make the biggest part of the military personnel, they also make up the biggest part of the casualties. Right?
Tall men might have been better nourished (so more likely to survive wounds) or came from wealthier families so serving as officers rather than infantry
@@nursesida I don't think there is a correlation between coming from a rich family and being tall. I mean yeah, in a broad sense, whole nations are taller in average than others because they are richer. But, a person's height almost always has to do with hisgenes
@killerlightning @Buttrape Bill Well, no and yes, ultimately genes make height, but the better nourished you are, the more you will fill that height. At the time of the first world war, taller people tended to be wealthier because they ate better. So that did affect the number a bit.

But by which mechanism?
Lots of men die in natural disasters and mass suicides like black Thursday, by why didn't nature kick in there?
More men die in the US die in accidental gun deaths over a year then in most wars, but the male spike didn't kick.
It's like there needs to be a particular societal mind set that effects which male sperm is either created or is effective at reaching an egg.
The mechanism would explain why only men dying doesn't always trigger this effect.

Throughout a war most people will have constant elevated levels of stress hormones and that should be enough to create a significant change in reproductive dynamics. Natural disasters would likely not sustain the same stress levels over a long enough period.
More men are born in anticipation of a major social conflict because men are naturally expected to die in large numbers until the conflict is over.

I think the answer is simpler than that: An increase in testosterone in men causes them to produce more Y chromosome spermatozoon, hence increasing the chance of producing more boys than girls.
Men who experienced the stress and harshness of war became tougher, and their testosterone levels had to increase as a bodily response to stress and harsh living conditions during the war.

I think that's sort of the right line of thinking. I suspect the human mind knows that men are better suited for war (in general, at least) so during war the female body attempts to do whatever it needs to do to create a boy. Evolutionary theory more or less
E B I respect your theory but humans can’t subconsciously create more Y chromosomes bc of war. It’s probably more that there evolutionary has always been a balance between men and women since biologically when there’s no war it would otherwise also make more sense to have more women. Since a man can procreate with many and have a lot of children but women can only have one every 9 months.
