Indian Countries Outside of India

  • Why are there so many countries around the world that have a South Asian (predominantly Indian) majority or plurality? How on Earth did there come to be many "Indian" descended countries outside of India itself?
Although many in the West (and even many in India) are not aware of this, there are a handful of countries and territories around the world with small to large Indian descended populations from the colonial era who predate the more recent wave of Indian migrants that have seen tens of millions heading to the Middle East, North America and Europe. These countries include Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, Guyana and many others, who, although containing many other cultures and peoples as well, have a substantial Indian-descended population, who have quite the interesting history. Thanks for watching!

+ funny marker boy. Melbourne, Australia. You are right. I think Indian Fijians are the only ones who have preserved their Indian language amongst indentured Indian labourer descendants ( settled in Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Mauritius, Suriname, Reunion Island, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, etc). I am the descendant (4th generation) of Indentured Indian labourers who went to Mauritius and I don't know Indian language.

The history of Indian migrants in Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tabago, Guyana and Suriname has many similarities. That's because all these migrants come from practically the same Indian states. That is why there are hardly any cultural differences among these migrants. If I hear the descendants of the Indiansin Fiji talking, it is as if I were hearing descendants of the Indians in Suriname talking. Wedding ceremonies according to the old tradition in Mauritius and Fiji are similar to those in Suriname. Note that that old tradition is fading.

It is kind of true. First the Portuguese achieved in 1498 by sailing around Africa. The Spanish thought they did it by sailing around the World with Columbus in 1492,only to figure they got to a whole new thing. Eventually they managed to reach Asia anyway, by crossing the Pacific. Then the Netherlands, England and France, when figuring Portugal and Spain were getting pretty rich, started messing with their trade routes and colonies eventually establishing their own.

In Singapore, we have integrated the early batch of Indians as Singaporeans (local Indians) and often times we don’t classify them as Indians.
But for the recent wave of migration, there is certain more cultural difference and often times, they are viewed as new immigrants/expats who have yet to assimilate into the local culture. Even the local Indians feel that way too.

When we bring non-Europeans in, we're bringing people who are not of our race/kin and will simply compete for resources. So, it doesn't matter how much you flatten or "Americanize" your culture, you won't be part of that nation ever.
On the topic of American culture specifically - the modern globalized, rootless, bland "culture" you see in America today is just a vacuum, not a real culture. The Heritage American culture is based on a blend of Anglo-Saxon and German culture and of course Greek philosophy and thought along with Roman statesmanship. It was supposed to be a perfect pan-European blend before the Hart Celler act of 1965 (which is when subverted America allowed non Whites to enter America). The real America died in 1965.

caribbean indians can be found guyana, trinidad and tobago, jamaica, belize, suriname, oversea departments of france (martinique and guadalupe) i think it's the other unmentioned part of the atlantic slavetrade. but cannot be labeled as slavery since they weren't registered as slaves. simply laborers instead

Longinus Ukenta Indians are the majority in Guyana, Trinidad and Suriname by population. And we all part of CARICOM. We are also the dominant culture in the region from what I experience.
Why is the government African? Because that’s how it is. One party is Indian, the other is African. Same in Guyana. (Go check for yourself) - Like the Republicans and Democrats. We “take turns” governing and this arrangement seems to keep racial tensions low.
And we don’t mix often I said. 20% of the population are mixed, and thats after a Century of African and Indian co-mingling.
If we mixed nearly as frequent as Dominicans, Malaysians or Americans. There would be no Indians and Africans left. But you can go to places in Trinidad where you swear on your in India. Every single person is Indian or Hindu. Towns, schools, music, and other media are all Hindu. We are self segregated but not in a hateful way. A Indian Hindu is less likely to marry a West African Christian. For instance, to my knowledge of the past 6 generations, all my family are Indian. And married Indian.

My 3x Great Grandfather John William Anderson was one of those so called "coolie" labourers who went to the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean in the 1840s early on in the indentureship period after emancipation and he remained there for the rest of his life dying in 1913. Because there weren't as many Indian women as men who arrived in Jamaica at that time, he was married three times, and only the second one was Indian, the other two, with whom he had ten children total were both of black or African descent. Another interesting fact regarding the Chinese and especially Indian labourers was that many of them changed their names after being baptized into Christianity. For instance John William Anderson's father was listed as being named "Coobella" with no last name as Indians in those days typically did not have last names.

Trinidad and Tobago does indeed have a large presence of Indian descendants as a result of the indentureship after the abolition of slavery in the British colonies. It is important to note that Trinidad and Tobago is NOT an Indian country. The Indian community is just of one the many other communities that reside in Trinidad and Tobago.

We have a large, stable and prosperous economy here so although many do come and settle here, many also just come to make some money so they can send it back or save it to retire there. Canadians of European decent that I know often go to Florida for the same reasons.
The economy is better here while the weather and culture is better or more interesting there.

For example Indian surinamese people call black people kaffrie.
Kaffrie is from the Dutch word kaffer. It isn't a positive word either. The same with the word "dogla" we (al ethnicities ) use that word .But in hindi it means "bastard".When people say coolie/dogla or kaffri it isn't to insult each other. When you use a swear word before it.Or when you say things one a certain way than it is to insult each other. But that is with every word.People use certain words for centuries without knowing what the thrue meaning was.And they wil continue to use it because for them it has no negative meaning.
And about your identity wheiter your Dutch etc.See yourself as a lucky person who can choose al the positivity from both worlds 💓

Greetings from Durban, South Africa. I am a third generation South African of Indian origin. My paternal grandfather left Chengelpet for the British colony of Natal . We are Tamil Hindus but most of us speak English as our main ,if not , only language. It would be appreciated if you could focus on South African Indians because if indentured Indians did not arrive in Natal then passenger Indians would not have migrated to the colony. Hence Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi would not have left India for Natal. It was here , Natal and Transvaal, that he began his experiments with truth. Imagine what the Indian independence movement and the subsequent history of India would have been if there was no Gandhi. It therefore saddens me to note that even the Indian media rarely focuses on South African Indians and the success we have made, especially those of indentured origin.

His descendants still live there. There are no Chinese citizens of morrocco Algeria Tunisia Libya egypt Palestine Isreal, UAE, qatar Kuwait Oman Yemen saudi arabia, iraq, turkey, pakistan, India. But, about 25 million black people are citizens of those countries. About 80% of the Caribbean population is black. There are indigenous black population in every south American country, and I mean, every single one of them. Let me name all of them: Peru Bolivia Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatamala, Belize, Guyana, French Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, MEXICO. All of them have significant black populations dating back 500 years ago. As a matter of fact, there are about 17 black majority countries in the America's. There are hardly any Chinese in the America's with the exception of tiny populations in Brazil and Panama and a huge population in the US and Canada.
