40fps in 120hz is my favorite setting in this current gen. Playable frames with very nice IQ, perfect for story games. Wish more games have that option.
Now this! is what I wanted from this game on the Pro. This is great! Glad they finally got there. And I'd leave PSSR on as it only loses you a few frames in certain locations and when it dips it's well within the VRR range. I'd go with the 40fps mode with PSSR on though. You get less shimmering on certain things like chain link fences with PSSR on also. Yeah! This is in a good state now. PSSR can only get better from here. I see people are turning off motion blur. Dont turn it off in a game with image reconstruction. Keep it on to some degree as when panning the camera or in quick motion you will see the image being reconstructed. If there is an option for lens distortion also keep that on. It's used in Spiderman and Resi 4 Remake. It makes it so all the detail in the centre of the screen takes priority over whats around the edges of the screen. It can help with performance. You can turn off film grain and chromatic aberration.
To sum up - we have about 3-4 fps more in performance mode. How come it cant be locked 60 fps is beyond me. Xbox X had better frames with worse graphics but...still! Anyway 40 fps suits that game well. It makes a game more immersive, real. Good update!
40 fps with RT with fidelity graphics reaching 4k with pssr - my choice to play 👍 I would have agreed with you about the 60fps IF this game was high octane action game but it is not
Amazing, this was so needed! Hopefully Final Fantasy 16 is the next game to receive a PS5 Pro mode. Got 0 regrets for buying my Pro and selling the normal PS5, best decision ever as in most games I play now I have the quality mode with smooth fps. To anyone who's crying that it's just the beta for PS6, have fun waiting til 2028/29. Currently the PS5 Pro is the best console to play games on, period.
I will happily wait, best decision I made ^^ The fact that the main selling point of the Pro (PSSR) is worse sometimes and now even getting an option to turn it off, is bad. If you buy an upgrade and the main feature is not actually a 100% upgrade, what is the point? Even GamingTech has said many times the Pro is not worth it right now, in terms of value for money. Is it better? Yes. If that is all you care about it's a no-brainer, as you said best way to play games. I'm sure that the best way to drive a car is also a Ferrari or something, that doesn't mean I think it's a good idea to buy one. It's simply unnecessary, and also not good value for money.
@Dezzyyx You have no idea how great PSSR is (and evs still didn't figured out it's full potential there's so much room), but you do you. I'll get PS6 And Sell my PS5 Pro in a few years. Until then I want the best console, which is the Pro
They actually fixed the messy PSSR issue with the last patch. Surprised DF never mentioned it. I think the game now looks fantastic in Performance mode PSSR. Just need fixes for SH2, Jedi Survivor, Avatar and Outlaws now. I'm glad the bad implementations of PSSR are being called out but overall the vast majority of games using it currently look amazing. Just replaying Stellar Blade for the tenth time and it looks so good with PSSR.
They did not alot of games still have this issue 10 to be exact an stellar blade it literally the only games that actually got an update an was not messing up. Every game you named still has horrible pssr issues. This 40 fps mode is a joke an it's lazy work on Sony they told you guys 60 they are giving you 40 does not sound like they just lied to you like they did with the original? 30 is the bare minimum to play a game at the worst fps 40 is just above that 60 is supposed to be the new standard. This game isn't like cod that needs 120 fps but it needs to be at least 60 because once you see it played higher it looks like sluggish trash at 40. I've done test just to confirm my self even though games look better today when I run games at 30 or 40 then go back to 120 it's night an day difference even going to 60 is a night an day difference but also show they don't care because it's what they've been promising for the last 4 years
You do a better job than digital foundry. They always have a slightly negative spin. They seem to lean toward being negitive toward console even if there are positives about the console version of a game. They still have this negative pc snob behavior toward console versions of games.
Good job, more video like this, please. I think PSSR now is good enough to finally move to console after 27years of PC gaming. 2000: no progressive scan in consoles, only interlaced image. 2005: progressive scan but too low resolution (sub 720p), too low anisotropic, terribile post processing AA (FXAA or SMAA) and lower res textures compared to PC 2012-2019: ps4 pro e Xbox one X console are far better now, but I’m still a PC gamer 2024: Console: machine learning AA e and upsampling, good enough anisotropic, equally good textures and good enough LOD. Silent operation, low power consumption, perfect contrast HDR due to system level tone mapping, faster loading times (generally), less pop up lod and textures effects due to more elegant and efficient memory architecture and optimization. 700 euros. Path tracing? It’s a waste of power, today. OLED monitors? I still haven’t found an oled monitor that offers hw level calibration like my LG CX TV and there is no software on PC that can calibrate a monitor in HDR. PC: stutter, bugs, crashes, broken effects and shadows, textures and lod pop-up due to separate pool memory architecture and/ or poor optimisation, windows updates, interruptions, no couch and tv easy gaming. Os, bios, gpu, case fans, and latency optimizazions and benchmarking required. E-core off, e-core on, HT off, HT on, Rebar Off, Rebar on, undervolting, game mode on, game mode off, closing processes, CPU bound games even with powerful CPUs 🤯 Better RT global illumination but with Poor washed out hdr presentation (not visible on UA-cam videos, final presentation on our tv at home is more important), loud gpu fan operation, high power consumption, a lot of launchers required. All for 3000 euros Now I’m finally ready to left PC gaming.
30fps, 40fps and 60fps translates to 33.3ms, 25ms and 16.6ms frame times. That latter metric is more meaningful for the perceived experience. 25ms sits perfectly between the other modes and is beautiful to play if locked stable and if you are not playing an ego shooter with a mouse.
By the way, folks playing at PC don't really know how locked 40fps feel, since that is an odd mode in PC space that never saw the level of support that it is starting to see in the console space now with 120Hz TVs becoming a norm for enthusiast gamers.
The only issue is the pop in still even with the Pro which in turn causes the pop in issue with the ray tracing as well. Surely there was a way to at least fade in detail instead of dramatic pop ups? There is also no colour in the ray tracing such as car taillights. It is just missing them completely which looks weird. Surely they could have fixed this at 30 or 40 fps
This is because, unlike what is said in the video, the RT in this game is very poor, not very beautiful... With RT you cannot use the useful strategy with generic pop-in, because even low quality objects considered weigh on the geometry index (BVH). The RT is often not great even on PC, even if there is no pop-in sometimes the result is grainy and/or updates late, let alone on PS5-Pro, where inevitably there are heavier compromises. This is talking about reflections, in the rest it depends on the cases, but even there the density of the samples considered has a certain importance.
@@lucaboss4491you make a good point. Thanks for the detailed reply too. I don’t really understand why water has so much noise in it compared to other games in this particular game. Is it just a limitation of the north light engine? . I know people praise the graphics of this game and sometimes it can look great such as in the forest area however there are still alot of lighting issues on console even after a.l these patches. A small cabin on the woods for instance the light through the doorway just constantly flashes and other areas jarringly change lighting completely. Personally I think ray traced shadows would have helped this console version more so than reflections. They can look good in mirrors etc but they could and should have used a fall back solution for that anyway like Hitman games too. They have a amazing reflections even without raytracing in latest Hitman. To me this game is just way too low a resolution on console to begin with.
@@DEVILTAZ35 The problem is the marketing around it. What makes more of a scene to say that it's on PS5-Pro? The shadows? The higher resolution, which would still be poor, without considering that they've now accustomed the masses to think that it's no longer a problem? You hit the nail on the head: The shadows are the thing that clashes the most, and the higher resolution would have also improved the SSR, since it already runs internally at a lower density. That's the reason why upscaling makes it worse than the rest, it already starts lower, it's clear that "stretching" further will amplify the defects. The same thing happens with the GI approximation, AW-2 uses a sort of low resolution RT, when you push too hard you see the poor base better. So, by increasing the shadows without even using RT, and improving the overall result thanks to the higher resolution, the result would have been better, and more consistent. Did you notice that in the video he complained about the shadows remaining as pitiful as before? You don't even need RT to improve them, at the highest setting without RT on PC they are much better, and they don't just affect the neighboring one. The shadows in RT are used to improve the situation of Wukong and Indiana Jones on PC. Even there, the XSX version includes the GI under the minimum PC parameter. Consider how much it can yield to those who inflate the result, they can say On PS5-Pro there is RT like on PC. After, if the RT LOD is pitiful, the frequency is halved as the density, what a problem, eh, just don't say it. The same thing can also happen on PC: For example when one chooses to activate RT/PT at 4K with a GPU that is not very high-end (4080-4090), they put everything to the maximum then with DLSS Ultra performance they worsen the whole package. By now we have reached such a point, that if I had to adjust all the "side" things in a decent way, the perception of the masses would see an old game.
Danke für deine super gute Arbeit weiter so ... Kannst du bitte auch Videos auf deutsch machen. Ich wünsche dir ein frohes Fest und sehr viel Gesundheit Glück und Erfolg im nächsten Jahr.
Very good analysis. Do you happen to know if the pssr affect the hdr maximum highlight and raise black level or not? I feel the hdr looks a little brighter when I turn the pssr on…
We need a PSSR 1.5 update ASAP targeting the noise issues and the blurry final output, also, a better performance with low res, that's like the number 1 thing it should be doing properly and honestly it sucks
I liked the 40fps mode on base ps5 with oled, it's tolerable co.pared to 30. I played a trial of it and went with the 60fps, this was before the new patch.
When I got my pro this game was one of the least impressive. New balanced mode now makes this one of the best upgrades. Feels smooth and looks amazing on an OLED
but if you look at 6:35, you'll see PSSR working the way it should, highlighting the news stand and tree next to it, and when PSSR is OFF, everything ahead looks dull. So yeah, i'll be running it with the PSSR ON if it only drops 2 frames thank you.
Man, if Sony is going to keep pushing PSSR I think they need to provide some sort of consumer update or roadmap. It’s just too inconsistent at the moment. I’ll definitely try balanced mode on this game though.
it looks so much better with PSSR on, I tried turning it off and everything was just blurry. The image is more stable with it off, but it doesn't look as sharp and detailed
Glad they added a 40fps mode with reytracing. Thats a great middle ground for the pro. I was hoping for a balanced mode on the bace ps5 after the game launched. I might wait for a sale and pick this up on pro. But im also building a high-end pc in the new year, so im partly wondering if i should wait to play on a pc 🤔 ...its just waiting for the new RTX cards to drop is looong.
If the base PS5 gets a 40fps mode. It will likely not be able to do RT also and retain the better shadows of quality mode but at 40fps. That stuff will get downgraded and be closer to the performance mode. So it will be performance mode maybe with some slight graphical improvements but at 40fps and the resolution of performance mode. Not sure if it's worth doing for Remedy.
@WllKiedSnake I wasn't expecting reytracing at 40fps. More the bace ps5 quality mode at 40fps at the time. The performance mode was too blurry and the 30fps quality is.. well.. 30fps.

I sometimes.. _often_ wonder why they don't do a 50fps mode. Maybe developers are just dumb but 50hz is part of the hdmi standard and all TVs can sync to 50. It would seem pretty obvious
I think eveybody is blowing the noise in pssr totally out of proportion. Its very minor and you can't really see it when you're moving around. On top of that the performance is now great on playstation, I didn't think Remedy could do it! I bought this on SX and now I almost regret it.
40fps is the way to go for a lot of games on PS5. I played all the Spiderman games that way, ratchet and clank, god of war and the last of us part 1. It’s smooth enough and obviously looks amazing on a 4K tv.
In Spidermans case I'd unlock the fps and choose the mode you think in the best with a unlocked fps. All these games actually. Unlock the fps in the mode you think is the best.

PS5 Pro is turning into a disaster, the thing that was supposed to make the machine great devs are now letting you turn it off. Crazy! What else is crazy is the Quality mode is called "Quality" mode. lol
Been trying the latest dlc and it is still really aliased regardless of setting. Maybe the dlc has not been fixed properly yet. It also has a lot of SSR instead of raytracing on Lakehouse DLC especially reflective floors where reflections disappear when you move the camera. I didn’t notice any difference with PSSR on or off with this dlc either.
Be careful of using the Copyrighted song Wide Awake from Jaimes from Alan Wake 2. Remedy may want it removed. I don’t want to see you get a strike. It is such an awesome song though.

More important than a a bit of extra noise in a static image using 4x zoom is ghosting or unintended blurriness when in motion
It’s awesome I tryed it. And pssr is very great look at the hair !!! Les noises if you turn off the « grain » cinema noise effect
Now this! is what I wanted from this game on the Pro.
Great stuff bro 👍
To sum up - we have about 3-4 fps more in performance mode. How come it cant be locked 60 fps is beyond me. Xbox X had better frames with worse graphics but...still! Anyway 40 fps suits that game well. It makes a game more immersive, real. Good update!
40 fps with RT with fidelity graphics reaching 4k with pssr - my choice to play 👍
I would have agreed with you about the 60fps IF this game was high octane action game but it is not
It's really cool PSSR will get updates. Also keep options to turn it off just incase. I use Balanced Mode on my tv. Performance mode on PS Portal
I was so happy when i saw this update! This mode is perfect! Every game should have a balanced mode!
Great! Now I'm going back to the game.
I love your channel, can you tell me which TV you are using in the latest videos?
I've done test just to confirm my self even though games look better today when I run games at 30 or 40 then go back to 120 it's night an day difference even going to 60 is a night an day difference but also show they don't care because it's what they've been promising for the last 4 years
@@alvinamana1459there are about 4 games with PSSR issues. The rest look fantastic and far superior to FSR
will definitely be trying out the balanced mode when i play the game again
I really wish they would add a 40fps mode to SH2.
Yeah me too. That’s how I’d play it as the resolution is quite low in performance mode.
You do a better job than digital foundry. They always have a slightly negative spin. They seem to lean toward being negitive toward console even if there are positives about the console version of a game. They still have this negative pc snob behavior toward console versions of games.
I honestly just wished they added the 40 fps mode to ps5 and series x. Would make a world of a difference.
Hey Man, great video as ever! The music however is very distracting and unnecessary imo. 👍🏻
Yep.
I’ll add annoying to the adjective pool ha
Yep i can listen to music on my own, stick to the video
Thanks for your work man! Please disable motion blur in future testing, because it causes most of the shimmering.
It is disabled 😊
Best use of ray tracing that I’ve seen.
Good job, more video like this, please.
I think PSSR now is good enough to finally move to console after 27years of PC gaming.
2000: no progressive scan in consoles, only interlaced image.
2005: progressive scan but too low resolution (sub 720p), too low anisotropic, terribile post processing AA (FXAA or SMAA) and lower res textures compared to PC
2012-2019: ps4 pro e Xbox one X console are far better now, but I’m still a PC gamer
2024:
Console: machine learning AA e and upsampling, good enough anisotropic, equally good textures and good enough LOD.
E-core off, e-core on, HT off, HT on, Rebar Off, Rebar on, undervolting, game mode on, game mode off, closing processes, CPU bound games even with powerful CPUs 🤯
Better RT global illumination but with Poor washed out hdr presentation (not visible on UA-cam videos, final presentation on our tv at home is more important), loud gpu fan operation, high power consumption, a lot of launchers required.
All for 3000 euros
Now I’m finally ready to left PC gaming.
This 40fps mode is strangely smooth. Very good. And the raytracing looks really good
Love the 40 fps mode. Quality mode is slightly sharper and looks like higher RT quality
Don't have the game but great work as usual 👌👍
The developers did not have to have such a 🔥 soundtrack
That’s what makes this game even better in my opinion
I think is time to buy this game now
Basically 1080p PSSR at 40FPS. This is the mode I asked for. I can now purchase this and black myth wukong.
Really looking forward to play this game in 2025. Probably one or two patches more and the game will be stunning on the pro.
Dude, you pump these out faster than DF! They need to step up, I still want to see a proper difference in HFW Pro 60 vs 40 and 30 fps modes...
I feel the hdr looks a little brighter when I turn the pssr on…
pssr makes everything voerly smooth even in motion whilke off looks crisp
We need a PSSR 1.5 update ASAP targeting the noise issues and the blurry final output, also, a better performance with low res, that's like the number 1 thing it should be doing properly and honestly it sucks
Quality and PSSR On for me. I like better visuals over getting more frames.
60 FPS mode shown here, even through YT the difference in sharpness with PSSR on, is night and day
but if you look at 6:35, you'll see PSSR working the way it should, highlighting the news stand and tree next to it, and when PSSR is OFF, everything ahead looks dull.
PSSR on ❤
Glad they added a 40fps mode with reytracing.
The performance mode was too blurry and the 30fps quality is.. well.. 30fps.
@@Hylander_1989 Don't expect quality mode at 40fps. Expect slightly below quality mode at 40fps if they did it.
@SuperUltraGamerMan Motion blur on is the right way to go since it's a game using image reconstruction.
@SuperUltraGamerMan recently got a 65inch G4. I'll probably end up hooking up the pc to that and playing AW2 that way tbh.
how the hell this couldn't be done on base ps5?
Damn that was quick. Great job man. I’d love to know how PSSR off 60 stacks up to series X now.
higher graphics settings and better framerate...
I’d bloody hope it does a lot better than a cheaper 4 year old console 🤦
The graphics settings are higher on the pro on all modes than Series X.

@@davidpliskin3330 modes are the same between ps5 and series x btw. Look at the digital foundry review of both consoles

I sometimes.. _often_ wonder why they don't do a 50fps mode. Maybe developers are just dumb but 50hz is part of the hdmi standard and all TVs can sync to 50. It would seem pretty obvious
Nice review as always. But please nexy time turn off that horrible music 😂😂
Agree
I usually just lock it since I only play certain games on the PS5 I’m not too concerned with the FPS. I play the games I want a high FPS in on PC.
@raichu9489 Still. If you can do it on consoles and have a VRR TV. You should do it. More frames is always better.
PSSR in this game shows how much better it is than FSR.
Hello, very informative video ! Great job :) Could someone please tell me the name of the song used in the comparison? Thank You. Keep up the good work.
wide awake by jaimes from the alan wake 2 chapter songs soundtrack
@@azwilko1997 Thank You ! :)
I tried this new update from my previous checkpoint. It is just a minor improvement at train station checkpoint. But even better i decided to install the stellar remnant 2 (unreal 5 game) on pro. The game is not even patched and in balanced mode resolution is increased and performance is increased ---banger! Surprised. Game looks better than alan wake 2 😂
"Game looks better than alan wake 2 " Get your eyes checked for both clarity and colour blindness because no sane person ever said that Remnant 2 looks better than alan Wake 2 lmfao
@DragonOfTheMortalKombat oh ok you must be playing alan wake 2 on a very high end 1500$ pc because on ps5 pro buddy there are a bunch of games that look better than alan wake 2. That is checked.
Those games have a higher internal resolution. Alan Wake 2 has a lower resolution to work with.
PS5 Pro is turning into a disaster, the thing that was supposed to make the machine great devs are now letting you turn it off. Crazy! What else is crazy is the Quality mode is called "Quality" mode. lol
yeah that's funny to me, the main selling point and now there's options to turn that off lol
Grow up
30 vs 40 fps, same. Vrr runs 48fps above. Pssr more sharper, than off more blurry
Been trying the latest dlc and it is still really aliased regardless of setting. Maybe the dlc has not been fixed properly yet. It also has a lot of SSR instead of raytracing on Lakehouse DLC especially reflective floors where reflections disappear when you move the camera.
I didn’t notice any difference with PSSR on or off with this dlc either.
uhh, this is a game changer in my buying decision
Be careful of using the Copyrighted song Wide Awake from Jaimes from Alan Wake 2. Remedy may want it removed. I don’t want to see you get a strike.
It is such an awesome song though.
remedy is not nintendo bruhh use copyright music all you want, those Finns are chill
I'd remove it just for a being a complete bag of gay shite
PSSR actually looks way cleaner and has more details in this game than FSR doesnt matter Performance or Balanced. But i think i prefer Balanced with RT effects.✅

They fixed it. Well almost
Would you be willing to put Series X and PS5 Pro performance without PSSR head to head. I’d love to know which version runs best.
The problem with the ps5 pro is the price point, which is now closer to a high end gpu (rtx4080 super for example) and for people like me who already own the base ps5 and a decent gaming pc, ps5 pro is not worth the upgrade. For the same price you can get a nice gpu and enjoy cheaper games on steam!
