    Epirus are great on semi forest maps and work well against Rome and any barbarian faction, just get pikes, some light flanking units (dogs, axemen, etc.) , heavy cav and lots of skirmishing units and you can pin them to your pikes flank with your dogs or cheap infantry and deal with the enemies cav with yours, finally leave the rest to the skirmishers. Simple

    I think archers have some what of a role against elephants and being a hybrid.
    What I mean by hybrid is that the higher tier archers have heavy shot which gives them a lot more power. This makes them effective especially in the flanks like a lighter javelin unit

    I'm confused as to which tooltip you would check shield value for missile defense. Would it not be under the Armor tooltip instead of the Melee Defense tip?

      And what are your thoughts about the patch 10? Absolute 0 changes in terms of balance.

  • @hermanPla
    @hermanPla 10 років тому

    The Suebi needs a 5 unit update because they are soooooooo underpowderd after the latst 5 patches. They only have epic units, terrible units and good units that are half strength (berserkers). so the are at the mercy of every faction that have good costeffectief units. They have almost no armor and are at the mercy of every strong missile faction. if you go against a missile heavy faction you need to hug the forrest and that is not always an option.
    In rome 1 and rome 2 the Germanic faction was my favorite but in Rome 2 they are the absolute underdog of every faction. and that makes me sad.
    So Suebi needs more cost effectief units.
    PS. Great video Heir

    Heir, you're looking at the wrong stats. Hover over the armor to look at the shield strength and protection from missiles. The melee defense tab only shows the shield strength in melee.

      They can hold their own in terms of pikemen, cav, skirmishers and cheap units. They have some great units on the battlefield when put to the test. And most Rome players are cocky enough to run in to your or just do the opposite and take a lot of arrows, javelins and stones all down long. Even they think they are great in attack or great in defence.
      This faction is great for flanking while your pikes take a beating, you can pick off at them with cheap melee units and skirmishers or use your cav to immobilize them.

    How does a man-thrown javelin get through more armor than a bow?

    • @sean-michaelconroy6022
      @sean-michaelconroy6022 10 років тому +3

      It's a game, it's called "balancing"
      If arrows did the same as javelins there wouldn't be much reason to use javelins since they have less ammo and range.. >.

    • @Mrdest211
      @Mrdest211 10 років тому +8

      Sean-Michael Conroy On a battlefield, missiles are thrown upwards and gravity gives them most of their momentum as they come back down. The advantage of the javelin is its weight and the length of the shaft behind the point. It pushes through armor with that weight if it hits at the right angle. And finally, javelins would also make a shield difficult to use if the point lodged itself into the shield boards because of the added awkwardly positioned weight.

    • @pchwang
      @pchwang 10 років тому +2

      Bows in the ancient world weren't very good. These weren't english longbows or composite bows we're talking about here. It was actually widely accepted that slingers were more reliable and generally superior to bowmen(while also avoiding the potential logistical nightmare of keeping bowmen supplied with arrows).
      Slingshot bullets also had the advantage of being hard to spot. If you've ever heard the expression: "the arrows darkened the sky", you'll understand that in these situations, the infantry on the receiving end probably raised shields and hid beneath them. Slingshot bullets could not be spotted in a similar way, and as a result, it was harder to know when to raise your shields in defense until you saw your comrades getting hit.

    • @sean-michaelconroy6022
      @sean-michaelconroy6022 10 років тому

      Pascal Vézina Yes and no. On a battle field missiles are shot upwards sure, but that doesn't increase their velocity or armor piercing capabilities it actually does the complete opposite because, you know, physics.
      The highest velocity will be right after the rock is slung, the arrow is released or the javelin/pila thrown any time after that causes decreased velocity, gravity isn't strong enough on earth to do what you're saying.

      Egypt is Ptolemaics or something in the game files so it is technically where it is supposed to be alphabetically in the faction list. I am pretty sure Heir is just going down the list so perhaps he won't notice that Egypt is between Pontus and Rome til then.

      Because the game is called Rome, Rome is the basic faction of Rome 2.
      Which faction do you want then as a punching bag? I think Rome is a good choice for testing.

    • @swissbob15
      @swissbob15 10 років тому +1

      What daan said, basically. The game is called Rome, and Rome is the dominant military force of the era. Because of their power and diversity, it is one of the most commonly used factions online and is the "default faction." Because his intent is to provide an example of a possible online engagement, Rome is a good choice since it is a very common choice online.

    I'm very disappointed in Rome II's take on Epirus (among many factions). I mean, it's remarkable how bland factions like Epirus are. They're essentially just a weaker version of Macedon with elephants.
