During World War Two, the German Army used over 70 different types of armored fighting vehicles.
Some of them gained iconic status and were produced in their thousands.
Others never got beyond the gates of the testing grounds.
There were marvelous examples of technical engineering among the prototype vehicles, and there were those that were just downright bizarre .
One of these was the Kugelpanzer, a spherical tank produced as a ‘one off’.

Metal Slug has a lot of historical tank references iirc. Iron Nokana is based on a Puma (Sd. Kfz. 234) while the Iron Sentinel looks like it has a Karl-Gerat gun.

If the Kugelpanzer originally mounted a machine gun, it might have been designed for urban warfare.
Machine gunners are prime targets for snipers, so having a small, self-propelled vehicle that can fit down narrow streets would be very useful. It has the additional benefit of being cheap and simple.
Had it been pursued, I suspect variants would have included a mineclearer, a flamethrower, and possibly a mounted Panzerfaust.
The Panzerfaust has back blast doesn't it? That would be incredibly dangerous for the driver.

Apparently yoyos were used as a weapon centuries ago
The aliens from the movie Battleship loved this vehicle for its aesthetics, and made their own, more lethal version, capable of tearing through ships and other structures.

This looks interesting as concept to be used today, remotely as a drone, using modern technology.

There are actually small spherical remote-controlled vehicles.
I believe they're designed to travel over deep, soft sand.

@@Carlos-em7xq I actually had an idea for something similar to those death meatballs. It's a bit bigger than a frag grenade and is remote controlled/if we get a little bit more advanced AI piloted. Variants could also be made for taking out specific parts in vehicles while they are on the move

I'll stick to my Baneblade and it's varients.
I think the Kugelpanzer is just one part of a set of 15. All numbered with 7 painted fully and 7 half way, one entirely black with an 8 on it. And an unmarked white one.

Surprised this wasn’t mentioned in the video:
It was an Artillery Spotter vehicle. It says so in Kubinka museum on the plaque next to it. The ideas was to quickly roll back an forth to correct artillery fire.

The design looks very similar to the droid tanks from star wars on the geonosis battle from attack of the clones. It's quite possible that this was the inspiration considering a lot of the guns in star wars are inspired from german weapons of ww2

I never understand how these engineers were like: "Well, we need something to overcome the mud... small thin wheels are useless so let's make something with larger wheels. Also do not forget to add smallest wheels possible to stabilize our creation. Also just for the back, please."
Since the front wheels/treads provide drive, it doesn't really matter if the steering wheels in the back get caught. There's enough horsepower to just drag them out of the mud and then continue on.

my guess is that it was a prototype to make a one man armored scout vehicle , bassicaly allowing the scout to be protected and with his radio contact the army to tell what he saw and since of its small size could probably go out fast from ennemy fire while being protected from small arm fire

Imagine you're playing Beyblade with your friends and then one of them pulls out the Kugelpanzer.
I know they wouldn’t be able to make it so advanced back then, but if the wheels could be pulled in and the back wheel folded up, it becomes a perfect sphere with a tread in the middle, which would be perfect for covering large open areas quickly, with the drawback of needing to stop and unfold to turn and see where to go next. Like a snail-droid mixed with a droideka

Should’ve just made the sides work as heavy doors that can be locked with a large engine on the back and larger back wheel so it could move faster. Then I could see it being effective as a moving pill box with an MG42 or Kar98k for snipers
I think this design should be brought back, with modern engines, armour it could be viable

a idea for a video: There is a Ottoman Soldier who is called for: "Seyit Onbasi", he was a First World War gunner in the Ottoman Army. He is famous for having carried three shells to an artillery piece(which each weighed 276kg) that helped to sink a allied ship, during the Allied attempt to force the Dardanelles on 18 March 1915. Later he earned award(medal)

I’m probably the only person here who saw the thumbnail and immediately thought of a Tank Boss from The Incredibles video game on PS2. It had the same setup except it was a robot and it contained a deadlier array of weapons. Cool to see where that came from.
