MY HERO HAS ARRIVED TODAY!!! And omg that is too funny!! It sounds like this song inspired a trend for you sweet cats to have as "P" name! Do you think you will ever adopt another cat? My dad had told me that one of his regrets was never getting me a kitten! However we had a wonderful Maltese puppy for one week shy of 15 years. He passed away only 3 years before his favorite person in the world. I know that they are together now because when they were both down here only 4 years ago, they were inseparable! The man would take this dog on HIKES LOL! They had a blast together! I would how precious and valuable a pet can be, just another member of the family. Your cat sounds so spectacular! What kind of cat was P Cat and what is Pandora???

Not sure where that track listing comes from, but it's really the following:
    Animal Farm
    Village Green
    Starstruck
    Phenomenal Cat
All Of My Friends Were There
    Wicked Annabella
    Monica
People Take Pictures Of Each Other
I always find the last song being an earworm in my head whenever I finish listening to this album.
There's also an earlier version of the album that came out in a small handful of international markets, but not in the UK or the US. It was missing a few of the songs from the more common version, but included "Mr. Songbird" and their recent A-side "Days."

😄👍 What a magnificent year 1968 was! Now that you've heard "Village Green" and the "White Album," here are a few others from 1968 that I guarantee won't disappoint:
The Zombies - Odyssey & Oracle
    The Beach Boys - Friends
    Harry Nilsson - Aerial Ballet
The Byrds - The Notorious Byrds Brothers
    Cream - Wheels Of Fire
The Moody Blues - In Search Of The Lost Chord
    Manfred Mann - Mighty Garvey
The Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet
The Idle Race - The Birthday Party
The Doors - Waiting For The Sun
Two others that are a little less ear candyish and more serious in nature would be:
    Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Laura Nyro - Eli & The 13th Confession.
Good albums, but one has to be in a certain kind of contemplative mood to enjoy them.

Great reaction, Crystal! The Kinks had a great sense of humour (both musically, and certainly lyrically). And in Wicked Annabella, Dave Davies (who sang lead on that one, while older brother Ray sang lead on the rest of the album) put his voice through a Leslie rotating speaker (the same as John Lennon sang through in Tomorrow Never Knows, but it was usually used as an effect for electric organ/piano at the time, not vocals).

"People Take Pictures Of Each Other" seems so relentlessly upbeat and silly...until...he changes his tone ever so slightly on "Don't show me no more, please". That signals he's feeling nostalgic and sad at the memories. Then you realize the whole song is bittersweet. It ends the album on a bouncy yet reflective note.

This side is another great suprise with simple and effective pop songs that could all be hits. Such a fun reaction, thank you, Crystal! If you had to use one word to sum up The Kinks, it would have to be "fun". Fun and playful. The two words that best sum up The Kinks are playful and fun. And a fanatical devotion to silliness. Okay, so amongst the words that best sum up The Kinks are playful, fun, and silliness... and great musicality. I'll come in again...
Anyway, speaking of playful and fun, I did want to note how much I enjoy your post-editing raising/lowering/speeding up/slowing down your voice. It really adds a delightful punch of personality your videos and the extra editing effort is really appreciated. Loved the Billy Joel 'Village Green' reference! :-)
Also, since you mentioned my favorite topic of Patreon... Sounds like you're moving in the right direction there, so very glad to hear that. Before going live on Patroj, I do recommend spending a few bucks to back a few people to see what that looks like from a paying Patron standpoint to get some ideas and make sure what you eventually put up comes across well and works how you want it out of the gate.
Hopefully you've held onto your original full length reactions so you will have no shortage of content to drip-feed everyone on Patron and eventually catch up with your current content. @@CrystalShannon4 My dear, sweet Crystal, I think it is time for The Talk. When a young woman reaches a certain level maturity and... how to put it delicately... activity... it is important to be proceed with care and forethought. When distracted by throws of musical passion, unplanned things can and will happen. I refer, of course, to the need for... data protection.
As you mentioned, video streaming takes up an obscene amount of storage, so a phone is a fine recording device, but a very poor long term storage medium. You also don't want all your hard work existing in a single, physical source or you could literally flush all your hard work down the toilet. Likewise, don't consider that UA-cam will always be there for you, as they can drop you without warning and block access to your own self-generated content.
Definitely need a cloud storage option of some sort that isn't affiliated with Google (lest we forget they own UA-cam) and there are plenty of choices from Dropbox to Amazon to Bob's Data Privacy Breach, Inc. You seem to have a lot of really clever peeps following you here, so I'd recommend a post and/or poll of what others use and why. It will be a great weight off your shoulders and the monthly fee will easily be covered by one of your Super Thanks supporters or three.

Greetings and salutations, Crystal! I would like to start off by saying how much I enjoyed watching you react to and review this video. You have inspired me to listen to this album again and I thank you. 15 songs on this album and only one song is over 3 minutes long. This format was pretty standard throughout the 1960s, but would soon change in the 1970s when progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Rush, Emerson, Lake and Palmer made albums with 8 songs and the shortest one would be four or five minutes long and usually the first 2 minutes would be an elaborate solo.
Crystal, I am absolutely excited to hear about you starting a Patreon! I will be thrilled and honored to support you there and will continue to do so here, too. I also would love to see you do more of your songs and covers, too. I love to see and hear you play piano and sing.

I just think its great that an album unfairly ignored in its time only continues to grows in stature. Equally great is how playfully serious and insightful you are about an album 54 years old.
The ol' harpsichord was de rigueur in 60s rock/pop and all over the songs from the period.
My favorite is probably the title track or maybe Starstruck (Ray would return that theme or plays on it throughout the Kinks future years).
It was Ray's 78th yesterday. God Save The Kinks!
Ever thought of doing a recording Celluloid Heroes, Crystal? You could do a nice rendition of it.
Listening to Starstruck just now and I never picked up how the end of verse melodies were used as the hook in Badfinger's classic Day After Day.

To be fair, it came out the same day as "The White Album", who wouldn't get overlooked in the shadow of that one? A couple of weeks later "Beggars Banquet" came out. It was released within a few months time of albums as great as "Electric Ladyland", "Music For Big Pink" and "Led Zeppelin 1". Lots of great stuff got "overlooked" around that time, only to be re-discovered later. I wouldn't say it was "unfairly" ignored, I would say it came out during a particularly fertile time in music.

@@TTM9691 None of those other bands were persona non gratis in the States and all of those albums came out before VGPS in the States (where it was such a priority for Reprise they didn't bother releasing it till early February). Heck, Reprise didn't even send review copies to US magazines, leading to little critical attention. Also, it wasn't even advertised or announced in any American music magazines. It was sure overlooked by its own label-an afterthought at best.
The Kinks sold 25K of Something Else and VGPS combined! That's just nuts. The 90 lb. gorilla in this listening room is quite obviously the U.S. ban (which for whatever reasons sure seemed to reverberate overseas).
It was probably hard to buy an album that probably was equally hard to find in the first place. I'd also imagine your average UK record store had lets say 50-100 copies of those albums you mentioned and quite possibly 10 at the most of the Kinks album. And who knows how long it took to replenish the stock of the sold Kinks album.
And as for the U.S. who knows if even 250 copies were distributed nationwide for an album that wasn't released till early the following year. So instead of VGPS being a holiday release its dropped instead in the dead of winter.
I will stand by my assertion that not just VGPS, but Something Else were unjustly overlooked in large part as part of backlash of their US ban.
Do you think its mere coincidence that Ray strikes a deal with the American Federation of Musicians and lo and behold the next Kinks album hits 105. Arthur is even more British and esoteric than its predecessors (every bit as good too) plus Victoria gets some traction on radio?
Sadly they never really did recapture their previous level of popularity in their homeland.
The commercial fates of Something Else and VGPS were dictated by their US ban which made the Kinks overlooked and mostly forgotten for about 30 mos.
The Kinks just simply were not playing on the same level playing field that their contemporaries were at the time.

Meanwhile in the US the former albums didn't chart but Arthur #105 and Lola #35 did.

Hi again! Since you mentioned you weren't able to store your unedited recordings from your earlier posts, I strongly, strongly recommend finding a cloud storage solution that works for you that is unaffiliated with Google/UA-cam. Online storage is shockingly cheap these days, so running out of space should never be a concern. Definitely want to have your content safe from YT suspending your account so you can always bring it all back again if needed.
You have a lot of very clever folks following you here, so I'd recommend a poll or post on what online storage provider people prefer and why so you narrow it down a bit.

One thing I find so cool about the Kinks is that their music regularly shows up in movie soundtracks. Just a clear sign of how highly they're regarded.
They really have that soft but heavy dynamic that only the best bands can pull off.
By the way, all of this music that you've been reacting to has been inspired by The Beatles one way or the other. So the comparisons are almost unavoidable. That's just The Beatles' legacy!

I agree with you, The beauty of this album is that Ringo get help from former bandmates (John, Paul and George) on this album (Some people have referred it as a Beatles Album ).
Ringo is the third studio album by English musician Ringo Starr, released in 1973 on Apple Records. It peaked at No. 7 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified platinum by the RIAA. In Canada, it reached No. 1 on the RPM national albums chart.
The album is noted for the participation of all four former Beatles, and for its numerous guest stars, something which would become a signature for Starr on many of his subsequent albums and tours.

That makes a lot of sense for Wicked Annabella and probably added to the major difference that appeared when it came around! Also, I knew there was something off about Phenomenal Cat ending the album, I just automatically assumed they went well out of their way to be wacky and outrageous and I had to commend them for such a bold choice! Still impressive song and perhaps for the best that it's not the closer.

Another amazing analysis of the music, comparing the music to recitals and other genres 'singing books to life.' 'You typically pick up qualities of the songs that I've missed even over repeated listening, enriching the experience. I appreciate your musical connoisseur-ship. But the sequence of songs aren't as I remember the album. Phenomenal cat should be on the middle of the album side, for example. I wonder if the album manufacturer switched the ordering from the original??? Btw, it's okay to compare 60s bands to the Beatles because Beatles, unlike any other decade concerning one band, were considered the measure of excellence and changed the course of music. However, the Kinks were an excellent band in their own right, and my comment here isn't meant to be downplay their own influence of introducing satire into these late 60s songs. Nobody does satire better than Ray Davies, and this was after their having introduced the heavy metal riff on earlier hits such as 'You Really Got Me"!

Great reviews on all the albums you've covered. Young as you are you have a monumental task of catching up on all the worthy albums so hats off to you! You'll get requests for the obvious greats and no doubt you need to listen to those artists - but there are other artists who are less famous who also have classic albums that may be of interest to you. One of them (or two) is a UK artist that recorded under two names - their band name - Van der Graaf Generator - or under the name of their singer/songwriter - Peter Hammill. They have many albums and I'll list a few that I would rate as worthy of your interest.
    Van der Graaf Generator
The Least We Van Do Is Wave To Each Other - 1970
H to He (Who Am The Only One) - 1970
    Pawn Hearts - 1971
    Godbluff - 1975
    Still Life - 1976
    World Record - 1976
    Peter Hammill
    Fool's Mate - 1971
Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night - 1973
The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage - 1974
    In Camera - 1974

Kinks are the most English sounding band of all time. It's almost as if Ray Davies was transported from the middle ages, playing for Kings and Queens, to modern times. Some of the songs on side 2 sound like Broadway lullabies or songs composed for a children's tv show (like Phenomenal Cat, Animal Farm, Starstruck, I mean c'mon!). This is one of their most catchy albums. My one and only complaint about the Kinks is that they needed someone like George Martin to produce them, their production values sound dated.
