Do u have any advice for catching bait in the Chesapeake bay? I’ve been a largemouth bass kinda guy for most of my life, have a couple buddies that run charters that I fish with but I finally got my own boat this year and really wanna get into some rockfish this year. I’ve never actually went out to catch bait on the water or anything like that. Just curious what type of things should I look for to find bait in the bay? Docks, bridges, pylons, Bowie’s, rocks, that type of thing. I’m young and don’t have that much experience doing it all on my own. Out of Stoney creek on the upper bay, right next to the key bridge. Although I have no problem running the bay down to the bridge or trailering the boat far. Appreciate any type of pointers or advice u could give me. I’ve watched a shit ton of ur videos getting ready for this year and I’ve learned a hell of a lot man. Appreciate any knowledge u can give
Hey Mike Gio here from Western Long Island sound, sometimes we run into bunker schools a quarter of a mile wide. is there such a thing as netting too many and not physically being able to lift the net what do you do then. My arms are about 1/10 the size of your buddy. Thx
I know what you mean. We see that sometimes too. You can do what I did on the clip right after the underwater footage where I brought it up section by section or you can rail dump some. Grab the horn of the net and shake half out but you have to do it quick, since they swim the net into a tangle after a while. I also keep a small 6ft net for that, but I rarely end up using it.

Mike, like always another great video! What time of year is best to catch Menhaden? I've been catching white perch and spot in marina's. Should i be focusing rivers meeting the bay?
They will show up mostly when water hits 50 and stay as long as the water is warm. In NY we see them in March thru November. They love backwater spots where they can be safer. Creeks, harbors, rivers, little cuts.

Yep, around there. 20-25 ft. Use a Velcro strap around your wrist and attach the line to the Velcro Incase you net something solid. (Big Mike didn’t use the Velcro but he should have).
what is the deepest water you toss the net. I fish out of Boston, and the water can be 40 - 50 feet deep in the harbor. Is it worth tossing the net? Thanks Mike
Good question. Actually I faced the exact same issue when we fished in Boston with Joe Marciano. 30-40 ft deep is EXTREMELY difficult for adult Menhaden. (The net is 50% closed or more after 20 ft. )They are just so fast and alert. The only way you can really do it is if the schools are thick from the very bottom all the way up to just below the surface. So thick that they can’t flee because they are crowded in.
I like 1.8lbs per foot with the largest mesh you can get. 5/8- 1-1/4” The new Black Pear INVI NETS ARE CRAZY! I’m not throwing one in this video but you will see them in videos goin forward. They are truly easier to load and throw because of the “chain” of lead shot instead of marble lead. No BS. They are legit easier to throw. @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thank you for the reply. I was looking at the barracuda nets this week on your recommendation from another video but was unsure of the correct size I will check out black pearl thank you Mike
Nice video. I see large schools of larger white bait or Greenback out off shore in the Gulf of Mexico down in the Everglades, and can’t seem to catch them. Would this be the way to go down here? It would be in 15 - 20 feet of water or so. You can see them coming, but when they get to you they disappear under the boat. Frustrating. I would be throwing a 10’ 3/8 with 1.6 per foot. Thanks
I would still start with a 10 which is plenty big and work on mastering that size. An 8 or smaller is a different method in most cases. Once you master the 10 you can throw pretty much anything.
Hi Mike, How are you doing, You are doing good fishing I like it.One question please, What does the like Bunker? I will try to catch live Bunkers in Hudson River NJ, here is some fishermen catching with triangle hook drop and pulled. Maybe I can use some corn or bread crumbs, what do you think? Thank you!
My question is related to the Sea Pro 248 DLX. I'm a 2019 248 DXL owner as well and I'm not sure I understand how the bait well controls are suppose to function. I do allot of live bait fishing so I depend on the bait wells to keep my bait alive all day. I flip both console switch's too the ON position to fill the live wells , both forward and aft. Once full with the lids closed they just run over into the boat. I don't find any way to re-circulate or airate my bait fish. I know you're a Sea Pro sponsored angler and have much more experience that I do. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
If you have the dual version you will have 3 position switch’s. Up is fill and down is recirculating. I added a Venturi valve to my stern well to aerate. It’s super easy to do. I can send you a short video showing how I did it by email. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com You have to adjust the flow so it stops just short of over flowing with the wells open to use the pressurized feature. If the pumps are over flowing strong with the lids up you will never be able to stop it even with 2 guys standing on the lids. The pressure will lift you right up. The pumps are very strong. I set my drains partially open so I can run ALMOST wide open pumps and the level slightly over flows with lids open. Then I fine tune at the valve to get it perfect. I rarely keep the stern well pressurized. It’s more needed at the bow since it takes a pounding. Hope this helps. There are a few well configurations depending on how it was ordered. Let me know if I can help further. Feel free to email me anytime. 👍👍

Most Gizzards you can find shallow, and even deep Gizzards can be easier to get, but I have had cases where 5-6” Gizzards where on the surface in summertime and they were very hard to get close to before dispersing. I didn’t try this technique, but I imagine it will work on any surface bait that is too fast to net.
I should have tried to net some bunker today. I used hook and line to catch spot, but was mostly catching undersized croaker. Needless to say, I couldn't use those for bait. The spot I was able to catch came off the circle hooks too easily. One got its tail bit off by a blue fish. I turned it into cut bait, and only caught a skate. Oh well. It was still nice to be out there.
