As a happy owner of a 5th gen X1 Carbon, the value proposition comes down to what kind of person you are. If you want a laptop that you can buy, and continue using for a LONG time, the X1 is a great choice. I’m a full time college student, and my tech doesn’t get treated nicely (think regular dropping on hard floors). My computer sustained virtually no physical damage, and the selection of ports are as stiff as day one. Buy a Surface laptop if you want a great computer for a few years, buy a Carbon if you want a good computer for a decade.
100% agreed. I use one in the service industry as a technician, and it has been dropped off ladders with only minor blemishes to the corners. The 5th gen is Rock solid, I can only hope that the 6th gen will be exactly the same build quality.
How's the battery life been? I have a surface pro 4 that (at whoppin 2 years old) is dying on me and I'm looking for a laptop that'll actually last (that's not a Mac)

When it was new, I could easily expect 7-10hrs of battery (with standard settings), after about 4 years of heavy use and a decent amount of abuse, I still see 5-8hrs (again, depending on use.) My only complaint I have with mine is the necessity for the LAN adapter/dongle when using a wired network connection. As a service tech who is using the LAN connection constantly, it's a little inconvenient, and the dongle has started to show signs of wear. With this type of use though I can easily expect that. Of course mirrorless cameras will also eventually fall to cellphones or whatever camera tech comes next
Sony stopped making dslr? Odd. I saw one earlier today at bestbuy. But dslr wont be going anywhere as mirror-less cant capture as much detail as dslr. Same as dslr cant capture as much detail as film. Both film and dslr will always be here
You forgot to mention one of the best upgrades for these, especially for the traveler... you can install a WWAN module(or cellular wireless card) - a feature not found on a lot of other laptops All in all I really like my 4th gen, though I do have a small crack in the top case. Daniel Smallwood The X1's I've had a chance to use always have something wrong with them. Either the display is bad, the hinges are shot, the touchpad is unresponsive, or literally anything and everything else. Never the first gen machines though, they're weirdly one of the most reliable machines I've ever used or sold - If I had a first gen x1 with the chassis of a 5th or 6th I'd be happy, seriously one of the most comfortable thin&lights to use despite its flaws.
We’ve always had good luck with X1’s, the X230 was the one that always got screwed up. Either a broken screen, bezel, or bad motherboard. However the L500 series has been absolute tanks.
We've had many laptops, but the rate of the X1 carbons vs all other laptops we use (most use older gen non-carbon ThinkPads, though there are others) is substantially higher

Well they noticed the mistake and fixed it within hours after its upload... A "terrible" title is a bit too dramatic, and whether you were looking for this laptop or not you still found the video anyways so why does it make a difference?
I literally spit out my apple when he said 18mm of key travel.
The thing that struck me about the webcam wasn't the camera, but how unacceptably bad the microphone is.
So hook one up
@@unbroken1010 That's no excuse for a notebook at a premium price point with mediocre performance specs. A $400 notebook doesn't need a great microphone. A $1,500 business oriented notebook should have the best microphone they can fit in it. Microsoft, Apple, and Dell don't seem to have an issue with that.
I've got the 2016 one for work. It's great, super light and battery lasts forever!
DAMN. I DIDNT SKIP THE AD IN TIME! Linus is always slick with his ads
"I like to unlock a computer with my face" creates an interesting mental image.
snipping tool ... WIN+SHIFT+S
You've changed my life
Also, in thinkpad, Fn+PrtSc will open up snipping tool.
E-learning made easier
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow
18 mm key travel? Really? Wow, that's an amazing editing mistake!
What do you mean? Nothing wrong with that kind of travel. I mean, I've been using 1" key travel for years now. :P
Is it? You never make mistakes yourself?
@Jesse Hernandez, Canadians use metric system.
wrong. We use the metric system >:D
do some research before you say anything :)
Rofl 7:20.
Linus: We built a fricking bedroom, we're going to use it goddammit!
I am using the X230 released in 2013 .. had to switch to Linux for performance on this older machine.
Very happy with it. It will last another 3 years for sure.
Windows key + Shift + S Makes you use the snipping tool, sort of the example that Linus made in this video about switching it over.
What a horrible title :(
+Frigid Farmerwhoisrelegiousinaweidway this is worse than the xps 13 video title and thumbnail for certain I was fine with the first move away from the broll with simple text on top but this legit has nothing to do with the thinkpad.
It's odd not to mention the product in the title for people searching.
the karnige must suck not to understand the concept of criticism
the karnige. it might be hard for some people to watch this free content if it doesn't come up when searching for thinkpad.
It's okay man you're not alone
I cant even impress my old computer by trying to do something else because I always end up playing for long hours...
wtf Frigid
consistently good in reviewing in gadget... all i need to know in one video clip
Thanks for updating the title, this is a video I've been waiting for and while I understand you guys need to make enticing titles in order to get as much viewership as possible, I personally may have skipped the video if it weren't for knowing the subject of the video to begin with.
win+shift+s
that is shortcut for snipping tool
AreYouConfused _ scrolled a lot to find you.
i personally prefer installing greenshot :D
Greenshot and ShareX are both pretty good at doing snipping tool's job
Linus, I work for University IT. I can tell you who this impresses, especially coming from mostly overpriced dell products...
me. haha
in 2045 laptops will have built in dslrs for webcams
DSLRs will be gone by 2045 (or atleast as popular as film cameras today) They are already losing market share to mirrorless cameras, I would be suprised if dslrs were still dominant in the market place ten years from now. Of course mirrorless cameras will also eventually fall to cellphones or whatever camera tech comes next
where are you?
Sony doesn't even really make DSLRs anymore.
But lg gram will still have 480p
Sony stopped making dslr? Odd. I saw one earlier today at bestbuy. But dslr wont be going anywhere as mirror-less cant capture as much detail as dslr. Same as dslr cant capture as much detail as film. Both film and dslr will always be here
The hell man. The camera looks pretty damn good looking at the footage.
Just bought this..and I'm absolutely in love
how is it?
@@backdraftmagnet thank you for your feedback! Getting mine today with the HDR 2K display and 16gb RAM for $1350!
For worksite jobs, trackpoint is king, because you can use it with gloves... not so much so for touchscreen or mousepad...
That's like the best webcam I've ever seen in a Windows laptop
You forgot to mention one of the best upgrades for these, especially for the traveler... you can install a WWAN module(or cellular wireless card) - a feature not found on a lot of other laptops
All in all I really like my 4th gen, though I do have a small crack in the top case. A friend got a 2nd gen refurb that failed under warranty and he got it replaces with a refurb TS4XX model. My sister got a 5th gen just as they went on sale before the refresh and likes it as well.
Also superfish was never on the business class laptops. In spite of all the shenanigans they play with consumer grade hardware, the business lines remain fairly solid and no-nonsense.
An ad inside of and other ad, before the final ad. Mindblowing
This laptop was amazing! It was my workhorse for 4 years, no problems. The only reason I gave it away was because the screen wasn't glossy style.
1:32 so if laptop like MacBook Pro doesn’t have that Ethernet port, what it have to do to connect to cooperation network?
Adapter?
hello IT admin here, we just use a VPN or a docking station
This video is like a piece of candy stuffed inside a can of pickled herring.
Sure you can get the candy in there, but was it worth it?
edit: They added "Lenovo X1 Carbon Review" to the title, this comment is no longer relevant.
Kensworth what
Please elaborate
Hey Join My Channel for more amazing tricks

Booooook... Lenovo Trackpoints are awesome. Far faster and more exact than the dumb touchpad. Just set it to the fastest lightest setting possible..
@@00O3O1B ^ I agree
My dad works in it so I grew up learning to use it, I feel stupid using a trackpad
I actually prefer more precise input, so I set the sensitivity on the trackpoint to medium and turn off acceleration.
Trackpoints are just so easy and precise when you get used to it. Trackpads always feel glitchy on any non-apple laptop. I don't get why people do not enjoy the trackpoints. It's like one of the best inventions on a laptop IMO.
@3:22 ... because Thinkpad customers apparently like physical buttons, that's why Lenovo changed it.
@5:59 Do you know any build-in webcams that do better and are more suited for conference calls or are you trying to be nitpicky?
surface go has a marginally better webcam..
Thanks for the Snipping Tool hint, I never new such a thing worked, this is awesome!
I broke down crying of laughter when Linus referred to the nub as a mouse nipple!
Sarah Bingham I'll play with jors
Real men call it the clitoris
I actually like small track pads, cause the large ones always in my way when I'm writing my novel :D so mainly that's why I will go with this laptop for work! :)
@Abby H 2025 Oh, yes, and (luckily) I've got plenty of time to finish my actual one in this lockdown times :)
3:36 "sorry, sorry everyone" - you are Canadian for sure. :)
I just completed work on a Lenovo before watching this vid. I think these machines looking and feeling the way they do makes me more productive tbh 😂
This sure brings back memories of playing games like megaman 3, final fantasy 7 and original pixel doom back in 2005. It all ended when it was smashed at the LAX airport. That's when my childhood ended.
Please do a Thinkpad P1 review. None of the big channels reviewed the P1 and it's the one workstation that far surpass the MacBook Pro top configuration
Dave lee did that.
I don't know why but I am watching it at the end of 2019
Better then me, i'm watching in the beginning of 2020 xD
@@Timy-Stream Oh, dear, this is going to be a long thread :)
@@owlstead Don't even talk about it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think it impressed Lewis from Unbox Therapy
while the others arguing with linue over the laptop me thinking that is one of the best thumbmail the channel has done
The cat hair at 7:17! Get that man a lint roller.
the thumbnail makes you look like you have enough neck to offset jacksfilms' forehead
but how about those stock photos?
Oh no! The lizard zucc has taken over linus!
I work in consulting for almost 5 years, never used t f webcam. Don't recall anyone using it ever...
Now u gonna need em
Thumbnail look like you are ready to steal my privacy :D
Finnaly! It's the first time I've seen someone say the actual key travel in mm, thank you
Except he got it wrong. 18mm of key travel would be like a Commodore 64 keyboard.
18mm keyboard buttons travel. LOL sorry i know there is correction but i was like WTF for a moment
The smaller track pad prevents you from accidentally touching it while typing and getting strange mouse movements.
Outdated excuse from 2015, plenty of manufacturers have much bigger trackpads with better palm rejection and no ghost touches.
3:15 dont make them do it again ... x240 ... still suffering
Can't they just stop with this moving trackpad at all. Make the trackpad stiff like the old days, there is already buttons and tap to click works so well now (often better than the clicking mechanism)
0:49 Nice. I forgot about Schwifty Five. Anyone else remember seeing the song on Ebaumsworld back in 1999 or 2000?
Very well put together video and it's informative video! Good job guys!
im tryina impress your mom
Got em
Roasted.
Golden Dipper ur mom gay

Trackpoint master race
This is more focused on businesses to give their employees the ability to take their work around the office/home.
They make great music production laptops. Tons of legacy USB but with thunderbolt as an option makes it wonderful as a show computer.
3:15 while entirely up to the oem wrather to turn it on by default, there is a setting in windows which allows you to click and gesture with taps anywhere on the track pad, my old gateway laptop has this feature but it is off by default.
Who are you trying to impress? ...... with that poor titling.
Linus would love the T440/T540/X240-series trackpad which is a lot like the Macbook's. He wouldn't be popular on r/thinkpad though.
Autunite not many would be
Yeah it's horrible.
X1 extreme gen 2 review?
You really do learn something new every day. Today I learned that Linus thinks you can abuse Zotac computers the same way you abuse cocaine.
If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend you watch the video playing on screen at 2:32
plz get your hands on xiaomi gaming notbook 2018. i7 8cores, 16gb ram 256ssd + 1tb , gtx1060 6gb, ips matte screen fhd.... tones of ports... super small... from 1030€ to 1350€ based on model.
the whole point of a thinkpad is THE TRACKPOINT
and linus keeps talking about a bad trackpad, wtf
this channel is getting worst every day
so lame
If you put a trackpad on a laptop reviewers will talk about it. If you don't want them to talk about it, either put a good trackpad or remove it altogether making the trackpoint the only navigation input on the laptop.
We've returned more broken X1 carbons than every other laptop combined
Yeah, their build quality sucks bad. My old Thinkpads were much sturdier.
However the L500 series has been absolute tanks.
maybe because thats all you have? thats like we've returned more macs than any windows machines in an Apple environment...
We've had many laptops, but the rate of the X1 carbons vs all other laptops we use (most use older gen non-carbon ThinkPads, though there are others) is substantially higher
What’s keeping me buying the ThinkPad is the TrackPoint.
Little red dot are awesome, I never tried Carbon. But I love my T470. They aren’t on the top of the line but heck they are reliable.
Is scrapyard wars going to happen again ? I recently found your channel and loved the series . Would love to see one for this year .
