    I have restored antique furniture for 30 years and what you say is a desk, is actually a washstand. The dining chairs are Charles Eastlake. What a beautiful bunch of history you found in that unit. Congratulations.

    The “book” you were looking at is a daguerreotype, a picture taken without a negative on a sheet of copper thinly plated with silver. These were commonly taken in the 1840s and 1850s. They were frequently encased in a decorative frame which protected the photo from damage. Daguerreotypes framed the photos of loved ones and were commonly carried by Civil War soldiers to keep their loved ones close to them while engaged in war.

      I have a daguerreotype of my 3rd great grandmother that her son (my great great grandfather) carried during his service in the war between the states. He carried it all the way from Pennsylvania to Tennessee during his 2 years of service. It has a crack but mostly in amazing shape!

    What a fantastic unit! My mom and dad got married 8n the later part of the -😅50’s. My mom had some Sterling silverware. She didn’t have a full place setting, but odd and end pieces. Beautiful craftsmanship in the pattern. I love seeing those old pieces. Gorgeous furniture pieces too!

    • @SilverAuntie
      @SilverAuntie Рік тому

      My parents were married in 1955. They were given a full set of Old Master silverware, as well as an antique sterling silver pitcher engraved with letter H that was given to them by dad's great aunt. My parents divorced and, in the way of acrimonious divorces, mom made the pitcher disappear until many years later, when it turned up with a K on it (mom's new initial). For many years, she would hide it whenever we would go for a visit. In her mind, she was convinced that we were going hi to "steal" it back for dad. I know, crazy, right? She became very ill at the end, and while she was in the hospital, her younger children helped themselves to everything of value in the house. My sister and I live out of state and, in fact, were not notified of her death until the night before her funeral (long story for another time). All of the silver, crystal, ORIGINAL Desert Rose china, and several other things "disappeared". It's a shame, really, because these things had history, not just monetary value. I hope someone found them in some pawn shop and gave them a good home.

    What a bonus! Those silver rings are napkin rings, not neckerchief slides. They still had those brownie scout pins in the 60's because I have one. The bent over spoons are made that way so kids can learn to feed themselves. The old letters probably was her gr grandparents. And the silver box was probably her grandparents or gr grandparents silver set. Such awesome things.

    The spoons with the curled handles are often for either disabled people to feed themselves OR to train toddlers to use cutlery rather than hands. My Mum (who would be 92) had hers from childhood and all the spoons and forks had curled handles. They were made that way, not done by parents. (in the 20's and 30's)
    Adding: in the Girl Scout box, the little hats are hand made lavender bags/pot pourri bags - to perfume clothing in drawers. And the silver 'ring' is a napkin ring. I have a set, given to me as a Wedding present, 36 years ago. From an era when cloth napkins were the norm, especially for dinner parties.

    Jeremy this has to be the best unit. The B&W photos and GS memorabilia are fantastic. My favorite discovery was the letter's from the soldier to his wife. 🌿💕

    That was an awesome find with the clarinet! With clarinets being woodwind, normally made of wood or plastic, if there are any cracks inside even the slightest, it ruins the sound. The connecting pieces usually has one end with cork like material that fits into the next piece. The mouthpiece has cork that goes into the mid B & Bb up to high c d e f (with sharps & flats in between as well as mid A down to low C with side keys & fingertip open buttons. On the back is thumb covering where you need to hold to get mid G on up. At the end of that section is cork end to fit in to D on down to the lower deep notes with more side keys & open fingertip buttons, where at the end there is the last cork connector into the bell of the clarinet where the brand & style is marked. How it plays like i mentioned before depends on any cracks in barrel down to fluted bottom, & in this case dings too from it being composed of metal/silver. Before attaching connectors, you'll need cork grease to moisten cork so it doesn't crumble crack or fall apart. We had an exchange student from germany come to stay with us for a year to attend school, & on my 15th bday, her family sent me a clarinet. It needed a lot of work, repairs didnt fix it. Instead of cork they used material that looked like red waxed dental floss. A friend of my parents gave us an Artley 8S. Artley's have the most beautiful sound. Self taught myself to join my sending school districts marching band when i went to tech for hrt. It caused rumpled feathers & was told by the principal that i couldn't participate because it would open a can of worms. So i asked to return back to my sending district which caused panic from the principal because i was top of my class. They wanted to remove the riffraff not lose their best, she said. Neither one of us would budge, & i returned back to my sending. I guess a big meeting ensued afterwards, my standing up for music arts & leaving broke open the feared can of worms i represented but in a different way, & they then started to allow students who have the grades to participate in after school extra curricular activities sending has that tech didn't have. That same fall, i auditioned & made it into district band & the next year districts & regional band with first alternate to all state. Not many were in my band class, so i had the opportunity to raid the band closet. Taught myself to play the trumpet, oboe, bass clarinet, alto sax, joined many events from brass fests to an orchestra. Hats off to those who master the bassoon, that instrument is a beast! Marching band was fun. May not have been top of my sending district class, but the experience over all was well worth it, plus it gave incentive/opportunity to other students who left sending districts to go to tech, the opportunity to return/participate only for extra curricular activities at sending districts while learning a trade craft for future work professions.
    I don't play as much nowadays, i passed the torch & my clarinet on down to my daughter who surpassed me😊. Proud band mama! My hubby's maternal grandfather served in ww2 & after his passing, passed down a trumpet, slide trombone & fife he played from that era that we had restored. My daughter kept the trombone & i'm enjoying the trumpet😊 my papa (mom's dad) who also served in ww2 gave me an accordian when i was younger to play his polka. 😂😂whenever we visisted him for the weekend, we were woken up at 5am every sunday religiously to blaring polka music on his radio station with speakers. I could never play both sides of the accordian at the same time, my coordination was lacking. But i did get to play him his polka from my clarinet.

    The polished plate photograph is called a daguerreotype. They were widely used in the 1840's and 1850's, so a beautiful old and precious piece there.

    I had a nice set of dishes from my grandmother. Problem was, it had lead paint on it and I had to dispose of it, something to watch for in old dishes. I also got an amazing gold necklace of my mother’s when she passed. I love it because I saw her wear it so often, it was a gift from my father.

Lol seriously though I’m so happy you share your great finds with us all, this one was great to see & so full of history. American history is so interesting to me.
