Yes yes you do..ive got the les paul tele and strat so im pretty covered..my uncle has just brought a new 335 omfg i didnt realise how good they are so versatile and awsm tone just an absolute kick ass gat 👍👍
If i show my wife this video, showing her proof that l need 4 guitars, she'll make me sell the other 11!.....P. S. On 7-30-20, I finally got my dream guitar-A Fender Professional Telecaster, 3 tone burst, maple fretboard..it matches my Pro Strat, so they're like brothers. ...and my wife told me to go get it!!! I'm a lucky man!
Bro it's a must have guitar. That warm hollow resonating chamber.......? There's just no way to replace the feeling you get from one. This arguments over y'all. If it plays, it stays!
If your wife ever complains about a new guitar, just say “I’ve had this for years” and follow up with “sometimes I feel like you just don’t pay any attention to me”.
That doesn’t even make sense...just stop...respect jimmy page as well, he’s much better than most guitarists. if anything he’s the best. and please...don’t say hendrix is better I know he was good but don’t start bullshitting me with that nonsense.
@@dmitri9042 lol calm down bro, nobody is getting disrespected. He's referring to Page playing a tele on Led Zeppelin 1 and most people just assume it's a Les Paul. And quit trying to start an argument, saying that Hendrix wasn't the best of all time. If that's what you think, cool, that's your opinion.
@@dmitri9042, when it comes to Hendrix. Good, bad, better, are not really meaningful. The important part when it comes to Hendrix is this. The man was way ahead of his time, and completely original in so many ways. And that his influence paved the way for bands like Led Zeppelin. There is also the fact that he grew up a poor black kid, and didn't have access to music lessons like so many other guitarists. He was pretty much a self made man. Page may have been a technically superior guitarist, and was obviously influential in his own right, but Hendrix is the most important guitarist in history. Period. End of story. I like both players, but history will remember Hendrix in a way no other player can ever hope to achieve, and for good reason.
When I started to learn, I bought myself a steel string acoustic. Then my guitar teacher said I'd find an electric useful, so I bought a Tele. Then I bought a Strat that my teacher was selling for another student because he needed the money. Then I bought a Classical because I was learning some Bach. Then I wanted to see how an electric worked, so I built a Strat. Then I was offered a really good deal on a nice semi-acoustic - I'd have been a fool to turn it down. Then I saw a kit for a really pretty LP. I was learning some Zeppelin at the tine and I already had the tools I needed so...... Having built a LP, I needed to know how it's supposed to be set up so I had to buy one - just to make sure the one I've built is right. Today I've bought a 335 because they're just so darn pretty. I've wanted one for ages and got it for a steal - it was being sold by a parent whose son used to play but has given up so, really, I was doing them a favour by taking it off their hands. So there you go - I've had good, even altruistic, reasons for buying all of them!
I going to show my parent I want to buy a fender american strat but they won't let something about being financially responsible or something like that 🤷🏼♂️
i see everyone on here commenting “you need 5 the sg too” or “you need 5 the danelectro”. i think everyone who plays guitars know that we need every single one that exists and we wont stop until we get there :)
Not me. Flying V & woodvibe f-hole telecaster. HATE having a bunch of guitars around! I think guitar, I think MY TELE❤️ What it can’t do? 👉🏽Got NO interest in🇺🇸
So glad you emphasize the statement " don't worry so much about the name on the headstock. I've been an on & off bass player for about 12 yrs. At 65 I decided to try guitar. Got an old korean strat copy from a bartender when this bar closed. Was hangin on the wall for 20+ yrs, beat up, no strings. Took her home, cleaned her up best as I could, put on some Slinky 10's, plugged her into a small Marshall tuber, and WOAHHH !!!. Now 1 yr later at 66 I have an Epi Casino Coupe, & an Epi LP 60's re issue,
Thanks for adding ‘wife or husband’ to your description. My husband asked me why I need another guitar often and now i have a few more little reasons why. 🤩🎸
Mike Behrend In about ten years, they might have made me enough guitars,,amps. Pedals not all that necessary,,a few,,, an a couple Leslie's plenty for me. Now four motorcycles, maybe.
12 string acoustic, 12 string electric, lap steel guitar, les paul, stratocaster, telecaster. es335, es175, gretsch 6 string electric, rickenbacker 12 string. These guitars all have very different sound. The list could go on and on depending on your guitar musical and textural needs for your writing. In essence I think a small music store collection of guitars is essential, in my opinion. As many guitars as your wife has shoes.
You need each one in a range of colors. Strat: You need an HSS strat as well as the SSS strat. I also just ordered an active HH strat. Each one in a range of colors. Tele: You need one with hot-rails and a coil-split switch as well as one with dual single coils. Each one in a range of colors. Les Paul: You need one. I have four because I wanted a stock standard, a dual P90 56 re-issue, and I modded a headstock repair black Lester with blackout hardware, a killswitch, and a multi-position preamp; I also bought a Wolf WLP 750T, because they're only $450. ES-335: I'm not a huge fan of hollow body electrics. I do have an Ibanez Artcore Expressionist hollow-body that I like, but I wouldn't say that everybody needs one.
formanbradley Mine has practically zero. I bought a wide suede strap before I bought it just in case but it’s fine. Depends on the luck of the draw though. Epiphones are worse because the elongated headstock moves the balance point further up the neck.
You need "a" Strat, and "a" Tele? I'm not understanding this. Not my language. What is this "a" thing? If you say "several" of each, then I am grooving with ya.
I’m down to one Strat for the first time in a long time but I still have multiple Teles LPs and Super Strats! Try explains why you need more than one EVH striped series! I have two and I can’t justify it in any rational way!
I'm relatively new to guitar, been playing almost 3 yrs, and I've spent way too much since I've started. I've owned about 9 guitars, mostly different brands & pickups. What I own that I can't live without: American Performer Strat SSH Gibson ES339 American Deluxe Telecaster HH. I obviously have respect for the Les Paul but when it comes to its weight & discomfort, I feel like it just doesn't need to be this way. The ES339 is lighter, smaller than the ES335 so you can use a smaller case, and aside from a little more feedback if you're right in front of an amp, it just does what the LP can do, without the pain in the neck & hunching over like a dog humping a football.
Love this lineup. The ES339 is truly an underappreciated guitar. Played one and was shocked since I really don’t like LPs. I ended up with an SG as my Gibson, but loved both.
Ray: For a clean jazz sound, can you advise on the best solid body guitar, and the best amp? Are P90s better than Humbuckers? I have a Tele Deluxe w. a Roland CUBE80GX
DavyCrockett the classic “Jazz” sound (Joe Pass, Pat Metheney, George Benson, Etc.) to me is a hollow body with a single humbucker in the neck position. P90s work too as they tend to have a fatter sound than a standard Strat or Tele single coil but you can dial in a nice “Jazz” tone with those as well. Any solid body would work although a Tele or Strat may not have the right Jazz “look” to it. IMOI think the amp plays more into the tone than whatever guitar you use. While most of the “blues slingers” like the tube amps that warm up and break up at lower volumes, Jazz players need something with more “clean” headroom and better fidelity and the “Polytone” has a cult following for this reason. Seems to me that you Roland amp would be adequate for this. It is all a matter of preference IMO but if my G.A.S flared up and I had the funds to act on it, I have always wanted a Fender Thinline Tele with Wide Range Humbuckers but then I am not really much of a Jazz player anyway!😆
I love all four and I've had them all at some point. However, I came to realise that no matter how many guitars I had, there was always one that got way more of my attention than the others, the Les Paul Standard. I chose to dedicate my whole playing time to it, and sold all the others guitars but one, so that I could have a spare if I break a string in concert, or if I need to bring the LP to the luthier. That other guitar is a Gibson Nighthawk which has a splittable mini-humbucker in the neck and a (also splittable) full-size humbucker in the bridge position. That pickup being splitted gives some mean Tele tones, and the neck one some good Strat tones. I'm a happier man that way. Less stuff, less to worry about in terms of maintenance, changing strings, feeling guilty about not playing some guitars enough etc...
I never really liked the bridge single coils on a Strat. The Eric Johnson one was the only one I was impressed with, but pretty noisy. It had stellar and very rich harmonics
Thee is one important omission, Robert: the Super Strat with Floyd Rose!!! That cannot be replaced with any of these 4. If I show this video to my wife she will ask why do I have so many Ibanez J.Custom if Robert doesn't consider them fundamental
-All 4- All 5! The custom 24 is the new, “modern classic” imo. I think we’re starting to get to the point where that guitar can be mentioned in this discussion as well.
My wife asked me once "why do you need all those guitars?" I said "The same reason you need all those shoes and handbags" She hasn't moaned about them since 🤣🤣🤣
Too bad if she was asking from a place of genuine inquiry, with an open mind wanting to hear a detailed explanation of all the subtle differences in a broader effort to better understand you, her husband and your passions. What a beautiful moment you ruined.
After your children have grown up and have lives of their own then you need a Marshall JCM 900 or JTM45 head and full stack, a Fender Twin and a Vox AC30. See how this works? Add a few basses and Bass amps, a drum kit. PA system w/microphones and mixer and recorder. Add an art studio with canvas, oil and fresco paint, drawing paper, charcoal and 2 easels. Now you are really set! Well, you still have to build the studio or take over the living room like I have done. No more basement for me! Don't forget a Harley-Davidson and an olde MG or Triumph Spitfire convertible to take slow speed rides in the back country roads to provide you with peace of mind and wonderment for the beauty of nature. Add some violins, viola, cello and 3/4 upright bass, sitar, veena, sarod, sarangi, oud, erhu, banjo, electric piano, Jazz hollowbody electric guitar and a few acoustic guitars. Add a flute and alto sax. Exercise every morning for an hour and eat right to keep fit so that you can live a long enjoyable and rich life. Kiss your wife every day. Pray every night and ask Jehovah to learn how to behave according to God's will. Be kind toward all your neighbors. Love life and always protect every living being, always. -Peter age 70
I don't know why but Telecasters Always make me smile. Like you said, it's a piece of wood with strings so you can put all your effort into a good sound instead of letting pedals or the amp carry you around. Snappy and responsive
@@thedakotahurley My 2015 Les Paul Classic has coil split 57 classics. It's amazing how P90-like the tone is with the coil split. Also fun to split one coil and leave the other as a humbucker, and blend them with the volume pots (using the center position on the 3-way selector, of course.) I'm trying flat wound strings on it now, and it's looking like I might be using them from now on.
The standard of the traditional Strat has one major design flaw and that is the volume knob is right by the bridge pickup which makes it pretty easy to hit when playing.
@@HoverHorse I know I heard it before there are some people that like the location of the volume knob being next to the bridge pickup. Watch Eddie Van Halen Cathedral he has no problem with the volume knob being located away from the bridge pickup.
Unfortunately this probably wouldn’t convince any non guitar player. They’ll just say uhhh they all sound the same to me. Nice video showing differences though.
tool6911, my dad will know the difference. He played a little guitar and is better than me, even though I just learned a few riffs and a song. He plays La Bamba. He probably won’t pay attention but when im 15, imma want these instead of a quince.
This is the best breakdown I've seen, on why the 335 matters. And really, why all of these guitars are so iconic. There are literally countless people blathering about the 335 on UA-cam, but it's usually more about which great guitar players have played them, and . . . basically, they look cool. But no one really spends much time breaking down what makes it play, sound and feel unique. They might mention a point or two about its sound, but quickly devolve into talking about how Clapton bought one because Chuck Berry played one, or whatever. This vid though, really gets to the point, and accentuates its uniqueness. Most guitar players know how different Les Paul, Strats and Teles are, but the 335 is so different that, to me, it's kind of difficult to decide exactly how to feel about it. You did a great job, though. That said, now I have to get the Pro with the hot pickups. Because I use my 335 for Clean tones. It's my favorite for a particular Clean tone that I sometimes look for. I've never loved their crunch, however I. Not because it sucks, but simply because it doesn't suit my style very well. It's a little TOO Bluesy. Your's, on the other hand, is a little more Jimmy Page. I think if I had a guitar with the Clean tone I get out of my 335, and the 70's dirt you get out of yours, it could easily become my go to guitar. Very versatile.
Fender - Strat/Tele Gibson - LP/SG Ibanez - Jem or Pia Martin - Electric Dreadnaught PRS - Hollowbody II Piezo I mean you could go into from there Firebird, V, Explorer, Jazzmaster, LTD-1000active, ect ect.
I got: A steel string acoustic A Les Paul A PRS A 7 String Ibanez A Jazz bass And a strat And people are starting to complain that I have too many guitars.
To me the neck pickup on a tele is heaven, IF... you have the right pickup. All the modern ones I’ve heard sound terrible, but I’ve used the fender pure vintage 52 and 64 and they both sound amazing. There is a top end sparkle to them that is just divine
I have 33 guitars and a new one coming ! ! ! Yes, I use and play most of them, some go to , while some are investments. BReed, Right now I am having my homestead remodeled, and a lot of ect. so I can not accommodate you on your request ! ! ! There is always a way to obtain music gear on one's own if one really needs such bad enough. Yard-Sell, odd jobs, ect. , Man I did my share in my youth just to get a new set of guitar strings ! ! ! I just bought a guitar for a young female student. She picked out a Thinline Tele Fender Squire that I moded up for her, which the gear option is at my discretion with each person I teach or just help out. I also bought a basketball goal and a couple basket balls, bad mitten, crochet sets and soccer balls for neighborhood kids, and so far they share in the sports gear upkeep, kinda like the movie called "The Sandlot" ! ! ! 😊 It's GR8T to see and hear people's learning actual music & scores and then applying the knowledges, skills and techniques learned and playing such on actual instruments more and more these days, whatever the styles and genres especially in a Band Group settings, even open mic settings ! ! ! 😎 Peace & Play 🎸 On . . . 😎🤘 DDH 1-25-2020.

The 4th category is the “Superstrat”-Carvel, Jackson, ESP, Ibanez, Schecter as long as they have a Floyd Double locking trem! A 335 is a semi hollow LP
Laughing out loud at the start of this video! I got a Strat called "Frankencaster" because it is reassembled from several different parts with a 3 SC setup but active electronics (a power strat, not a super strat), a Tokai Les Paul copy (labelled "Love Rock" for obvious reasons) which has actually excellent build quality, a former Czechoslovakian "Jolana" Tele clone with big rewound SC blade pickups, and a real Gibson ES 335 called "The Fall Girl" because I got it with a broken neck and had it repaired and rewired (cold soldering joints that must have been there straight from the factory). Tip: Screw down the tail piece to the top and reverse-string for maximum sustain. And I need all four!
AMAZING how easy playing, "good sounding" modern guitars are today, even the "cheapie" $100 guitars and the Squires and some Chinese guitars are truly amazing. I'm comparing them to my first guitar in the 1960's, SEARS & ROEBUCK, double cutaway, sunburst, tail-piece, double pickup and VERY DIFFICULT to play. Strings were about 1/4 inch about the frets AT THE 1ST FRET and even higher as you moved up the fretboard .,, but it sure built up my finger muscles and callesus'. Thanks for another excellent video, Robert.
I need a Tele and a 335 in my life. And another Strat. Your statement about how every guitar brings out a different player in you is 100% accurate and I have been preaching that to friends for years. And this is why getting a new guitar is so exciting for me. I always wonder how that next guitarist will sound! Not even joking. I was a LP guy as a kid, and when I first played a Strat my dad had tears in his eyes and said "you're a strat guy". It was a mind blowing experience. 30 years later, I still reach for the Strat the most. I can't believe I'm 40 and have never played a 335. Can't wait to see how that is.
Depends on your favorite styles. I like more steelstrings but it makes a difference if you're do strummings or fingerpicking stuff. So my decision was a good dread for strumming and flatpicking, and an OM model for fingerpickings. OOO, OO or parlors a also great for pickings. A 12 string is very special. On the electric side as well. It's nice to have a 12-string Rickenbacker. But the restringing and tuning😉
useless for me i got a colector from 80s soviet germany era clasical nilon guitar... it sits next to the closet i never play it... exept my Gretsch and jazzmaster..
@@greaserandcarguy9572 i have one i refinished and restored...a 60's Yamaha....cost $40...and no i hardly ever pick it up, but for fingerpicking, its great, cos im not THAT good at it....and it has a warmth....im gearing up to do a lot of recording....kind of a concept album, and i want lots of different sounds....i mostly play electrics too....but for a recording, i need one....
i think you "need" at least 4 and probably 5. i'd add something with one or 2 P90's like a TV yellow LP and unless you hate the sound a gretsch really does its own thing. there was a parallel universe tele thinline a few years ago that could replace a gretsch for me because it had TV jones pickups. there really isn't just one guitar that can get all of the core sounds in my opinion though some of the models with coil splits or taps and three pickups get pretty close (i have a PRS special semi-hollow that does that). if you need to cover a lot of ground and don't just want to have one signature sound it's hard to pull it off with one. and of course there is the whole GAS thing that all of us have too. i'm very thankful that my wife is OK with me getting something every few years even though i already have some nice stuff.
none of the 1st 3 guitars can touch a neck pup jazz guitar sound excep for the 335 (except the tele but again thats own thing) and still be versatile enough for folk, blues, light rock, funk, r&b, thicker country, indie, etc. its a must if you play non-high gain genres imo, best paired with a strat for the ultimate popular music combo (you get the whole spectrum of chimey single coil+trem and darker/riffier hardtail humbucker with more versatility and depth than a les paul). if you want 90% of pop music sounds get an sss strat (position 2 and 4 are like no other), if you have to get only 1 or want something more "direct sounding/bitey/honest" that mixes really well then get a tele, if you favour lighter gain genres but want something thicker and more resonant get a 335, and if you like higher gain hard rock, blues, metal, or zappa lean towards a les paul or dual humbucker guitar
More like, one needs '54, '57 and '62 Strats, a Nocaster, '52 and '64 Teles, Les Pauls both with Humbuckers and P90s. I suppose one ES335 is enough. Probably a Casino too. Then again, one guitar is a world of joy.
Brilliant. I already have those 4 guitars before stumbling across your video, but now I can justify them to my wife. She's a classic for "why do you need another guitar - you already have one" !!!! One, One, I need more than one, and you sir, just confirmed it.
I honestly told my girl that it’s better I collect guitars than women. It actually worked because she likes going with me to look at guitars... then again I don’t mind holding her purse when she shops 😂
I have an Epiphone Sheraton which is basically a 335. I slapped a bigsby trem on it with tv Jones style hb in the neck and a dimarzio Fred in the bridge. It is my favorite! Such a warm rich sound, have gotten many compliments about it at live gigs. I recommend a semi-hollow body guitar in every guitarist lineup.
it depends on what genres you play and lean toward, no need for a 335 or tele if i was looking at the 7 string, super strat, les paul, prs section. i think you can sub a les paul/sg for a superstrat, or a tele/335 for the p90 guitar, if you really wanted to cover the widest range of genres/sounds with the smallest number of guitars
From Leo: You do a good job at your videos, and I enjoy your style of playing. That is a good , four guitar basic kit, although I would take an SG over a Les Paul. You did forget A nice big fully hollow jazz archtop, and a Gretsch with Filtertrons and a Bigsby, A good 6 string acoustic, and of course a 12 string. Better throw in a resonator guitar also for those pure, ancient blues tones.
335 and tele can do the jazz thing, although if its your main genre obv an L5 or whatever is best. good shout on the filtertrons (which sound really great with a les paul) but unless its a specialty sound you're looking for (like rics, jags, jms, dano's, teiscos, etc.), a tele/strat/335/dual-humbucker solid-body can get you there imo
I had a good one once. Should have kept it but the thing that stops me getting another is the look. They're ugly. Strats, LPs, Teles and 335s look way better.
Why so christo? I would have thought a guitar with 3 humbuckers, all split, or maybe a p90 in the neck. But then the tone guru Johan segeborn on UA-cam done a video which shows that removing the bucker from the neck position on a sg (I think) has a dramatic effect on tone for the better. Ergo, the permutations are huge, 4 is nowhere near close to enough
both sg and les paul sound weird and mushy for jazz and funk, not like a 335. sgs in general dont seem to sound as wooly as les pauls though, means you can do more with them
First thing is, it was GREAT to hear you say that Strats, and Teles are different guitars! Guys say that say they are basically the same guitar in their videos drive me nuts. I saw quite a few comments about collecting. There is a huge difference between collecting, and having a lot of guitars. I have a few, but no duplicates. One Strat, One Tele, One Flying V, and so on. Each guitar has it's own sound. You are right that each guitar you are play will pull something different out of you. Same is true with amps. Great job on this video!
You are so right about having the right guitar to bring out your inspirations. I never knew what I was missing until I got my first Jackson 7 string. I love my LP best but some days are just an ESP day or a Jackson day. There are so many variants I even obsess over my picks and need several for the different styles and tones I am going for.
This is why I have the collection I have: Strat style (boutique) Tele style (boutique) Les Paul standard Heritage H535 (so an ES 330 style) Now I still need a: La cabronita/gretsch w filtertron Gretsch with dearmond style 55 style LP custom (alnico V) Something with a charlie christian Something with gold foils Tele deluxe And so on.
You definitely need all four of these guitars. I have had each one of these myself for a long time. But my 335s are Ibanez and my 330 is an old Guild Starfire lll. A Strat, Tele and Les Paul complete the setup.
Contrary to popular belief it is not that metal bridge because it is the same as a pickup ring. The tele bridge actually has a steel plate soldered underneath the pickup itself that gives it a different magnetic field than a regular single coil pickup.
regarding Tele Bridge pickup, Whoever might meant the plate UNDER the actual pickup.. like on the other side of the pickup, opposed to the metal plate you were pointing at. afaik it affects the magnetic field so yes, important it is
Hey there Robert. Great vid. Here's my collection over the decades. 53 tele. 54 lp junior 58 black beauty 64 strat 68 strat 76 strat 78 tele 66 ricky 360 67 epiphone pacifica ibanez destroyer 1999 lp custom 2000 tele 4 lower end strats epiphone II. I agree with you about the four gits you really need in the stable for all the reasons you mentioned. Nevr had a 335 but loved Freddy King's playing. He made it sound like it should like a wounded mountain lion waiting a freight train to mash it down.
I have a les paul and a stratocaster, extremely happy with both guitars love the hell out of them but they're the two electrics i feel i NEEDED. The telecaster isn't too bad but i much prefer the strat out of the two and the Gibson ES models just feels like overpriced toys same as their SG's. Les paul is where its at as far as Gibby's are concerned and Strats are where its at as far as Fenders are concerned.
Completely agree! Except mine are Epiphone and Squier. But they both play right and feel right. Also have a Fender Stratacoustic. It's a good bit dustier than the electrics.
@@arcanewyrm6295 That's the main thing. headstock logo's aside, if the guitar feels perfect in your hands and it's a joy to play that's the only thing that matters
@@foxhound5702 Wow! Always hated how my telecaster “look” But ALWAYS have it around. You’re right. I must LOVE how it feels. Would never take it off, but I’m scared to scratch it...
I have a Telecaster with two P90 pickups and a four knob control layout. I'm going to put a Strat neck with a rosewood fingerboard on it, because I think it would look better with the Strat headstock; then I'm going to use the original maple neck to put together a traditional Tele so I'll have the best of both worlds. Fenders were made to be customized, so...
Also need an ESP with EMG's and a Jackson, and don't forget the PRS. Almost forgot the SG! I also need 6 ,7 and 8 string versions and make that 2 of everything for different strings and drop tuning. I only own 5 electrics and I am no where near finished getting the basics for bedroom noodling. Got my first bass last year and I am already thinking about the next one. Even buying a high end guitar and paying the big bucks is never a waste. You get a fantastic instrument that will last you a lifetime and can be passed down for generations.
For me it's better to have a hollow or semi hollow guitar with p90's than with HB's, like a Casino. They sound even more distinct and it's honestly one of my favourite tones
right now i’m content with my 3 guitars but it is interesting hearing the differences back to back. i have a Fender Duo Sonic HS and a Epiphone TD ES333 as my electrics and a Taylor GS Mini acoustic. Being that i’m not even a year into playing though i’m sure I’ll eventually get to play each one of these
The 335 is ok, but you need a Gretch (maybe a White Falcon), and a 12 string electric would be nice. You need a 5 position selector on a Strat and position 2 is my personal favorite. It's got that unique, quacky sound. The others are good, but 2 is kinda special. Les Pauls (or a good humbucker) can deliver sweet leads (eg: Santana). But I hear ya on the chunky riffs a Les Paul can deliver. And that woman tone you pulled out of the neck was pretty sweet. Can't use it everywhere, but where it works, it works well.
I was gonna say.. I have a lap steel, a 12 fret parlor guitar, guitalele, ukulele, 3 string slide cigar box guitar, Taylor GS mini bass, cajon, djembe, tambourine and assorted shakers just for a full acoustic set.
"Those who can play, play with whatever guitar you throw at them! those who can't, collect guitars and look at them." :P Hey, dont mad at me, that's what my wife said and you know it's the truth.
Dude.. trust me - get yourself a nice oak grigsby 4 way and do your tele up.. it changes nothing for the bottom 3 positions, but the top position gives you a THICK semi-humbucker tone, using both single coils. It's not the same as a les paul style humbucker setup - it is a fabulous sound all it's own. I have both 6 and 12 string teles (and of course many others, including all the vital 4 - i would actually add a nice hollowbody electric - its a beast all it's own) and it sounds fantastic on both.
You should find a great condition second hand strat from 2012-2016! They came from the factory with those custom shop Fat 50’s pickups 💕 Of course there’s nothing wrong with V-mods and stuff from the new models but daaaaaang the 50’s are beautiful.
Duuuuuuude. I LOVE the look of those classic colors with the Vintera. Sounds like a good plan! I kinda wanna pick up a seafoam or daphne blue vintera pretty soon.
I could never own a strat. I haven't found one that I can just sit there and play without tweaking every knob from the amp to the guitar. But you guys make those things sound great.
Do you need?--- Yes. Yes I do.
Hey Rob, did I win the black Strat ?
Is that a B99 reference?

If i show my wife this video, showing her proof that l need 4 guitars, she'll make me sell the other 11!.....P. S. On 7-30-20, I finally got my dream guitar-A Fender Professional Telecaster, 3 tone burst, maple fretboard..it matches my Pro Strat, so they're like brothers. ...and my wife told me to go get it!!! I'm a lucky man!
@Underground Frenchy in my own defense, I've never uttered those horrible words....
Sell the other 11, Casey, and get a Line 6 Variax!
You can never have too many guitars

Isn't the rule: Number of Guitars you Need = Number you Have + 1?
That's for pedals, for Guitars it's 8, but turned sideways

I think a solid acoustic guitar should be on the list too.
And a nylon string Spanish guitar as well!

And a beater acoustic as well for "outings,".

Nordic Axeman say what you want, Hendrix will always be in my top 5 but never will he take the place of number 1.

So glad you emphasize the statement " don't worry so much about the name on the headstock. I've been an on & off bass player for about 12 yrs. At 65 I decided to try guitar. Q: How many guitars do you need?
A: How many are there?
just one more...

In about ten years, they might have made me enough guitars,,amps. Pedals not all that necessary,,a few,,, an a couple Leslie's plenty for me.
Now four motorcycles, maybe.
at what point does collecting guitars become hoarding... haha
SG. High fret access is amazing. Light and comfortable. And you can play them on the couch without the cable digging into the cushions.
Superstrat is the best for it too
Yes, Yes, and Yes. Had never owned an SG for most of my life, bought one last year and modded it out and it has become my main practice guitar.
I got a prs, but the sg was a close second
The neck dive is brutal though.
formanbradley Mine has practically zero. I bought a wide suede strap before I bought it just in case but it’s fine. Depends on the luck of the draw though. Epiphones are worse because the elongated headstock moves the balance point further up the neck.
"I kinda don't like the neck pickup of a Tele."
Plays killer Tele neck tones.
You need "a" Strat, and "a" Tele? I'm not understanding this. Not my language. What is this "a" thing?
If you say "several" of each, then I am grooving with ya.
Hehehehehehehe!
I’m down to one Strat for the first time in a long time but I still have multiple Teles LPs and Super Strats! Try explains why you need more than one EVH striped series! I have two and I can’t justify it in any rational way!
TESTIFY BROTHER!!!!!! lol
Rich guy :P, of course the more the better, but in the end it is all about playing what you have and create music.
@@GearGasms Are your 2 EVH guitars different colors? If so, then they are different. No explanation necessary.
I'm relatively new to guitar, been playing almost 3 yrs, and I've spent way too much since I've started. I've owned about 9 guitars, mostly different brands & pickups. What I own that I can't live without:
American Performer Strat SSH
Gibson ES339
American Deluxe Telecaster HH.
Plus you need backups for each and where is your guitar with P90s?
And you need a Fender Deluxe Reverb, Marshall DSL40C, Vox AC30....
...and about pedals...😆
Gretsch Streamliner Pro w/ P90s. 2 birds, one stone.
Ray Sauter: Thanks-good info!
"If you have a Strat body with 3 single coil pick ups, you got a Strat. When you add a humbucker, changes stuff". You're right, so I have both.
@Harry. B. Renner. jr. I love my Jackson USA Select Series SL1T Soloist, one HB at the bridge and two SCs in the neck. Another fantastic "superstrat"
@Harry. B. Renner. jr. I guess my Yamaha Pacifica 112j is a SuperStrat

But that location also enables the player to easily adjust the guitar volume while playing. It’s actually a pretty cool advantage.

1966 ES335, 52 reissue Tele. 1988 American std Strat. 2005 Les Paul premium plus. I am blessed to own all four. My wife collects vintage basses.
Fender - Strat/Tele
Gibson - LP/SG

Thanks for another excellent video, Robert.
my wife just laughed at me and then said you have pretty hair
I need a Tele and a 335 in my life. And another Strat. Your statement about how every guitar brings out a different player in you is 100% accurate and I have been preaching that to friends for years. And this is why getting a new guitar is so exciting for me. I always wonder how that next guitarist will sound! Not even joking. I was a LP guy as a kid, and when I first played a Strat my dad had tears in his eyes and said "you're a strat guy". It was a mind blowing experience. 30 years later, I still reach for the Strat the most. I can't believe I'm 40 and have never played a 335. Can't wait to see how that is.
you NEED acoustics as well....a six, a twelve, and a classical w nylon strings.
absolutely!
Don't forget the ukelele and the banjo too lol
useless for me i got a colector from 80s soviet germany era clasical nilon guitar... it sits next to the closet i never play it... exept my Gretsch and jazzmaster..
Love my MIM Tele. I put a 5 way switch in it and I can get literally any sound from it.
none of the 1st 3 guitars can touch a neck pup jazz guitar sound excep for the 335 (except the tele but again thats own thing) and still be versatile enough for folk, blues, light rock, funk, r&b, thicker country, indie, etc. its a must if you play non-high gain genres imo, best paired with a strat for the ultimate popular music combo (you get the whole spectrum of chimey single coil+trem and darker/riffier hardtail humbucker with more versatility and depth than a les paul).
if you want 90% of pop music sounds get an sss strat (position 2 and 4 are like no other), if you have to get only 1 or want something more "direct sounding/bitey/honest" that mixes really well then get a tele, if you favour lighter gain genres but want something thicker and more resonant get a 335, and if you like higher gain hard rock, blues, metal, or zappa lean towards a les paul or dual humbucker guitar
I happen to have all four and gravitate to my Tele. We play alt, grunge and hard rock and my Tele is the stand out
I've got all 4 plus a few others but also grab the tele about 90% of the time.
1) 335 2) backup 335 3) acoustic for when people refuse an electric 4) baritone 335 (still looking for that one)
335 is a well deserved candidate to the HOLY TRINITY.
We match on the first three. I have a es339 pro for my fourth guitar. They all feel, play and sound different. Love them all.🎸
I honestly told my girl that it’s better I collect guitars than women. It actually worked because she likes going with me to look at guitars... then again I don’t mind holding her purse when she shops 😂

lol.... lol..........
All 4 plus a super strat and a guitar with p90’s . Then the amps and pedals it never ends .
Use a Les Paul with coil splitting humbuckers to get P90 tone.
it depends on what genres you play and lean toward, no need for a 335 or tele if i was looking at the 7 string, super strat, les paul, prs section. i think you can sub a les paul/sg for a superstrat, or a tele/335 for the p90 guitar, if you really wanted to cover the widest range of genres/sounds with the smallest number of guitars
You also need a J bass, any short scale bass and a mandolin.
My wife told me if I bought another guitar she'd leave me, I'm sure gonna miss her
Go boomer
will that work?
gary jones
I wouldn’t try that. Because I’d miss her shoes and handbags.
You can’t be under 50 😆
Lol, but sometimes it fact.
I HAAATE when people say “oh my Les Paul coil splits so I don’t need a Strat” lol okay disregard the bridge, scale length, woods, shape 😬🙄
Yep. The coil splits on my LP sound nothing like my Strats.
The coil split on my LP is a true found-off split, and it sounds very much like a strat. You’d be surprised
Forgot one of every fender offset
You forgot the classical if you want to play any Willie Nelson and where's the p90 Paul
The heaven of the neck pickup on a strat is when you hit those one finger double stops
SG every time.
Played everything.
SG does it all.
I said that. I got a Gibson sg never looked back. Beautiful guitar sounds utterly amazing.
Exactly. I got a Gibson sg. Never looked back
I had a good one once.
What about Superstrats?? Everybody really NEED a Superstrat!
nah
You are so right about having the right guitar to bring out your inspirations. I never knew what I was missing until I got my first Jackson 7 string. I love my LP best but some days are just an ESP day or a Jackson day. There are so many variants I even obsess over my picks and need several for the different styles and tones I am going for.
This is why I have the collection I have:
Strat style (boutique)
Tele style (boutique)
Les Paul standard
Heritage H535 (so an ES 330 style)
Now I still need a:
La cabronita/gretsch w filtertron
Gretsch with dearmond style
55 style LP custom (alnico V)
Something with a charlie christian
Something with gold foils
Tele deluxe
And so on.
You definitely need all four of these guitars. I have had each one of these myself for a long time. But my 335s are Ibanez and my 330 is an old Guild Starfire lll. A Strat, Tele and Les Paul complete the setup.
I don’t know where the phrase “you have too many guitars” came from, but I can assure you it was probably from someone who has never played one.
Probably the same person who doesn't have any tattoos but tells you that you have too many 😂
Contrary to popular belief it is not that metal bridge because it is the same as a pickup ring. The tele bridge actually has a steel plate soldered underneath the pickup itself that gives it a different magnetic field than a regular single coil pickup.
How about a Gretsch? Should that be in the line up? Talkin' Hollowbody or Semi Hollowbody. 🤔
335 neighbourhood
@@orenda3696 Yes, like a 335, only more so. Less honk, more purity of tone. Great for Beatles songs.
regarding Tele Bridge pickup,
Whoever might meant the plate UNDER the actual pickup.. like on the other side of the pickup, opposed to the metal plate you were pointing at. afaik it affects the magnetic field so yes, important it is
Hold on, tele neck is the most recognisable sound in my humble opinion.
I thought the neck pick-up sounded amazing...kinda glassy. He's missing out not playing the neck pup more often.
Position 4 strat the most
Hey there Robert.
If you can take
that over done, commercialized strat sound?
More power to you!
I’m far too weak a man.
I go Flying V & f-hole Tele❤️
@@foxhound5702
Wow!
Always hated how my telecaster “look”
But ALWAYS have it around.
You’re right.
I must LOVE how it feels.
Would never take it off,
but I’m scared to scratch it...
SG too much? When Les Pauls are a good down payment on a car or buy a house. Not knocking, I got a LP too. Just curious?
I have a Telecaster with two P90 pickups and a four knob control layout. I'm going to put a Strat neck with a rosewood fingerboard on it, because I think it would look better with the Strat headstock; then I'm going to use the original maple neck to put together a traditional Tele so I'll have the best of both worlds. Fenders were made to be customized, so...
But you forgot Flying V, Explorer, SG, Mustang, LP Junior, PRS, Jem 777, ES350, and Gretsch Silver Jet.
I would add one guitar to this list: The superstrat with a Floyd Rose. Because come on you need something to do those Divebooooooooombz!!!!!
John Sykes of Whitesnake had Dirty Fingers pickups in his Les Paul Custom. Arguably the best rock tone I have ever heard.
Clapton , Hendrix , Trower , Malmsteen , Use Just One ... The Fender Stratocaster . A New One For Each Concert . 😁
Everyone also needs a banjo.. just putting that out there.
And a Mandolin
I was gonna say.. I have a lap steel, a 12 fret parlor guitar, guitalele, ukulele, 3 string slide cigar box guitar, Taylor GS mini bass, cajon, djembe, tambourine and assorted shakers just for a full acoustic set.
Hi. No.
I'm totaly with you.
Now i know what i'm missing besides Guitars, Ukes, Mandolines, Lap Steels and Basses 😆😆😆😆
i had a 6 string banjo before. It was pretty cool. I want a 6 string nylon string banjo. Deering Solana 6. They don't make em anymore though :-(
Personal preference. I have owned strats and teles, sold them all. Sold my ES-335 as well. I live with Les Pauls, and PRS guitars. That's it.
"Those who can play, play with whatever guitar you throw at them! those who can't, collect guitars and look at them." :P Hey, dont mad at me, that's what my wife said and you know it's the truth.
Ok whatever you say
That's kind of an ignorant statement. I (and most others) were guitar players before we were guitar collectors.
She's right. I know a few rich folks who have a collection of all these great guitars and amps. None of them can play worth a shit.
Buddy RJ: Your wife must know me. I've got a ton of guitars, thinking the next one will make me a guitar hero if I just stare at it long enough!! LOL
Someone's mad cuz their wife only allows them 1 guitar
Dude.. trust me - get yourself a nice oak grigsby 4 way and do your tele up.. it changes nothing for the bottom 3 positions, but the top position gives you a THICK semi-humbucker tone, using both single coils. It's not the same as a les paul style humbucker setup - it is a fabulous sound all it's own.
I have both 6 and 12 string teles (and of course many others, including all the vital 4 - i would actually add a nice hollowbody electric - its a beast all it's own) and it sounds fantastic on both.
Ooh man... I'm getting my first fender strat this year for my 18th Birthday, and I'm sooooo excited.
jimbo congrats i love mine
You should find a great condition second hand strat from 2012-2016! They came from the factory with those custom shop Fat 50’s pickups 💕
Of course there’s nothing wrong with V-mods and stuff from the new models but daaaaaang the 50’s are beautiful.
@@elkhartsausage I might do that. I planned on the Fender Vintera 70s stratocaster
Duuuuuuude. I LOVE the look of those classic colors with the Vintera. Sounds like a good plan! I kinda wanna pick up a seafoam or daphne blue vintera pretty soon.
@@elkhartsausage Groovy
I could never own a strat. I haven't found one that I can just sit there and play without tweaking every knob from the amp to the guitar. But you guys make those things sound great.
Same here. I own a Pacifica with a P90 and humbucker. It’s so much better than the single coils in a Strat. I can’t stand the standard pickups.
More like I need to show my parents and neighbors this video haha! It would be a dream come true to own them indeed!
Another suggestion: why don't you compare the tone and feel differences between the same guitar(s) with and without whammy bars?
