Samcraft is a channel all about educating, inspiring, motivating, encouraging, and sharing the things I've learned since starting my own small business in 2018.
Today on Samcraft I bring you along for a honest review of the xtool d1 pro 20w laser engraver. I have had this machine for over two months and put it through several tests. There are things lacking in making this laser engraver truly pro level so watch to see what I hate about the xTool!

Got my xtool 20w in November, had it paid off by end of dec. I am already now upgrading to the Aeon Mira9 pro due to the overwhelming support I got from my local community on goods I've made and sold using the xTool. It is a great machine and even when I get the Mira installed and running, the xTool will always have a place for specific jobs.

@@definitionxmk ok, cool well I can answer here as well. I'm sure Sam won't mind the extra content and analytics. Lol. I'm sure can attest to the first sentence I'm about to make.
It all depends on what you market.
For me, my number one seller is wine tumblers. That is because I have a customer that owns a winery and they make wine slushies. They sell these things like candy. I'm doing a batch of 120 as I type this. Lol
I market mostly to businesses for merchandising needs. So my number one sellers will not be the same as a person who does craftnshows every weekend.
I think for a while, Sam's top sellers were those beautiful spoons and also coasters. That might have changed though which leads me to my next point.....it changes.
This month could be wine tumblers, next month could be coasters, then water bottles, it really does vary.
For me, I tend to stick with thing I can buy and engrave and sell. I just don't have the time to craft anymore.
I'd love to, I have a lot of things I want to make, but I'm just too busy.
To figure out what your top sellers could be, first find something you excel in and master it.
Nothing will be a top seller if it's trash.
Anything done well can be a top seller.
      I hope that helps. :-)

USB - I switched over to wireless as on long jobs I ran into problems with. One issue was pausing as it would send the next "set" of commands, 2nd issue was it just dying at the end of job. Moving to wireless addressed the pausing and potential crash problems.
Enclosure Straps - must be a quality control issue, mine is perfect size and is 5 degrees or so over 90 and sits perfect when opening. The enclosure in general, I had many concerns on cost, but like you, very happy I bought it. While smoke will sometimes billow out the left hand side where the air vents are, this may be how I have the fan mounted (see below).
Fan for enclosure - I put mine on the outside, granted can't say I looked at instructions, but then you only have one thing going through that hole. I really wish they'd put an on/off switch on it like they did the air assist. I actually picked up a power cord with multiple plugins and plan on putting air assist and fan on same one so I can turn both on/off at same time and not leave the wall wart in all the time sucking power.
Air assist hose - I had to play with the amount that was in the enclosure to make sure it didn't catch, but that was a concern of mine too.
Honeycomb - I couldn't justify the 3x cost for theirs vs others on amazon for the same size, so will be interesting when mine shows up today how well it holds up.
Overall nice wrapup, look forward to other new projects you do with it. To date I've been happy with mine, minus the fact they announced the 40W during the timeframe I was waiting on mine to ship!

Excellent review Sam! I've heard nothing but stellar comments about this product and NO complaints. I knew there had to be some. Outside of that, I don't own one but have been talking to the company about specifics on their waveforms because I design safety glasses for them. I am impressed with their support. They are very responsive; even to someone that doesn't plan on buying one in the near term. But, if I do, I would heavily consider them for that one reason alone. You have a few lasers now. Which one would you absolutely recommend? I tinker with an Atomstack A5 M40 and I am pretty happy with it.

    • @Samcraftcom

Often times creators are pressured into saying certain things in their videos and frequently have to submit their video to the vendor prior to publishing it. I have a list of Terms and Conditions I send to prospective companies when they ask me to check out their product. Number one on that list is my content is 100% honest and upfront. I do not up-sell or falsely advertise products regardless of marketing desires. I would be doing both my viewers and my channel a great disservice if I were not honest and presented the good and the bad all together in my reviews. I always use a product for weeks or months before making a video on it, too. Lots of things are learned "down the road" with machines and support! That's really awesome you design safety glasses for lasers! I always throw away the included ones with machines in lieu of better ones I purchased myself. As for the laser question... boy that's a tough one! So many variables... budget, anticipated uses, etc. Even with the issues presented here, xTool does live up to most of the hype people give it... I've never used an Atomstack gantry laser though, nor many of the other ones out there today.

  • @nathanaelstricker9056
    @nathanaelstricker9056 Рік тому

With the straps, the issue of it it falling forward again goes away if you open the lid all the way - and I don’t say that to be condescending. The flap which folds down over the front and magnetizes to the front panel can be folded backwards instead of forwards, as you have it in the video. The weight distribution pulls back at that point, instead of forward, and the lid stays open just fine.

I ended up using a standard compressor (one of the super-quiet ones from good ole' Harbor Freight, but California Air Tools would have been a better choice), and plumbing it into both my Atomstack diode laser, and my big HL-Yeah 1060 co2 laser, with pressure regulators that I can set for different types of wood/surfaces. Since you've got so many lasers, you might want to look into that at some point, especially for the Co2, as it's vastly superior to what they usually include with them, and you can dial them in for the specific stuff you're working with. (Mine's plumbed on the Co2 so that if it's cutting it'll automatically use a higher pressure, but there's always a slight pressure running to keep any fumes from the lenses, search for Ultimate Air Assist for an example).

Thank you for the review. I have watched a lot of videos on lazer engravers. I have full intentions of buying one. In all of the reviews I've seen, none of them have answered one of my main questions. My thoughts are to pick a picture of something and engrave it on the back of a bench. Whether it be names or scenery, it will be long. The question is can I engrave part of a scene, move the machine to engrave the rest of or another section of the scene. I hope you can answer that. The biggest issue I have is quite pricey. I don't know if I want to invest that much money into an engraver.

Hi Sam, I own an xTool D1 Pro 20W as well and agree with your cable management assessment. I did not have the same cable-tie tearing problem, but they do bind when the gantry reaches the rear, annoying.
As for the focusing arm, I disagree. It is very handy to have it built-in - nothing to lose or misplace. If the arm tip scratches your work surface when returning it to the up position, simply put a small piece of paper between the arm and work surface when focusing it. The paper's thickness will not appreciably change the laser focus - it is not a precision system ;-). If you were concerned, then you could compensate by tweaking the arm adjuster for the paper's thickness...
I have been very happy with the laser but lately have stumbled upon some strange homing inconsistencies when burning. I burn a small circular pattern using "Current Position" and "Selection Origin" for the project origin. But if I re-burn without changing anything, it seems to burn about 1mm 'south' of the last burn. I can repeat this 2-3 times before it finally burns in the same location - as it should have done in the first place. This is quite alarming.
I have tightened belts, latest firmware and reset the laser but it still persists. Would be good to know if you see the same thing ... might be SW bug?

I don't think Sam has a 3d printer available, so I'd offer to do it for him and ship it up there if he wants to give it a try.. Requires extending the stepper/control wires, but it'd make it a much nicer/neater looking setup.

Overall great review although most of the complaints are pretty easily fixed. The 0,0 is in the bottom right because the gantry take up space, so if it was in the top left you 0,0 would actually be the gantry width and laser head off of 0,0. You pick the origin in both their software and laser burn and can pick the bottom right so to say their origin point is the top right is misleading and inaccurate. So it came of (intended or otherwise.) that you were really looking for reasons not to like it, so just started making things up to complain about.

I feel I need to bolt my xtool to the table if I’m running it at 15,000 mm/min

Really? I didn't notice anything much at those speeds with this unit.

@@Samcraftcom I’ve never seen anything visible yet but I’ve been keeping it safe and running around 6,000. I’m used to my lightweight Ortur I have.

Sam, the product engineer. You have to wonder if designers use the product to view any issues.

The air assist is a fish pump that cost £35 on amazon OR you can buy this, the same thing for £100?!?!? They are trash and the 2 I have had both failed after 12-18mins of cutting. I ended up buiying a £28 35/l pump from amazon and have been really happy with it, no cut outs/stops etc.

It was very helpful, however, you went really too fast. I had to keep stopping the video when you were putting the portable enclosure together

Heads up. You can get the air assist and honeycomb much cheaper, like almost half. Do some research. 😁
