- In this video, we will be discussing the use of stenting as a treatment option for sinus venosus atrial septal defects (ASDs). Sinus venosus ASDs are a type of congenital heart defect in which there is an abnormal opening in the upper part of the atrial septum, near the entrance of the superior vena cava (SVC) and the inferior vena cava (IVC) into the right atrium. These defects can be challenging to repair due to their complex anatomy.
Stenting, or the use of a small metal mesh tube to repair the defect, has been used as an alternative treatment option for some types of sinus venosus ASDs. However, it is not suitable for all patients. We will explore the factors that need to be considered when determining whether stenting is a viable option for a specific patient, such as the size and location of the defect, the patient's age and overall health, and the experience and skill of the surgeon.
We will also discuss the limitations and possible complication of this technique and compare it with the gold standard treatment for sinus venosus ASDs, surgical repair. This video will provide an overview of the use of stenting in the treatment of sinus venosus ASDs and help healthcare professionals, particularly those involved in the management of congenital heart defects, to understand the indications, benefits, and limitations of stenting as a treatment option.
