    A man who leaves his equipment out in the weather, well, i look at him as one who takes care of himself before his animals . . .

    We have a 4030 with 6000 hrs and it has never give a minutes trouble starting. We installed a block heater for easier cranking in the winter and every since it has always done great.

    A 4030 a pretty rare or "odd ball" tractor. Glad to see one not gone to hell in a basket

      I am quite surprised the paint is still in as good as shape as it is now. The engine could use an overhaul though. Has a lot of blowby.

    I understand that haha. We have a 4430 that never wants to start either. In fact I've had to pull it off with the International 856 several times.

    Well, at least you are getting your exercise, moving between the platform and the air intake. :) We had the 329 engine in our JD544 loader back in the day.

    That poor John Deere. That farmer needs a building to put it inside and keep it out of the weather.

      It will never happen, they run their equipment hard and put them up wet

    Full throttle and a spray of ether from the start just idle down enough it stays running and easy driving to warm it up

    Umm, Isn't there a place to plug in an extension cord?? I have a 4430 and I won't even try to start it without plugging it in for an hour. This is just HARD on a tractor. Wonder why it has blowby??? When I do have to use starting fluid, I take the air filter cover off and spray it directly into the filter housing. I also put the throttle to 3/4. Once it sputters to life, I pull it back to fast idle (1000rpm) until it's operating temp.
    A 466 would be wasted on a 4030 - this is essentially a super 3020. Would you put a 466 in a 3020?

    • @SuperJohndeere4020
      @SuperJohndeere4020  10 років тому +1

      This tractor does not have a block heater otherwise I would've plugged it in. As for the blowby I think it's because the the people that run it on this farm and the previous owners don't and did not treat it very nice when it's cold. Not letting it warm up properly before putting a load on it revving it when it's cold and all that. I think a 404 would be plenty of engine for this particular model instead of a 466.
      I personally think a 466 would break a 3020 in half unless you beefed up the transmission and the frame otherwise it would just ware it out faster. Even if you have alot of power it wouldn't be heavy enough to do much field work.

    My John Deere 4230 start in some canking (10 cranking turn maximun) in -20°C.
    Note: I installed a in-line injection pump from a John Deere 7810 :DD

    I've never heard of using break cleaner to start a diesel. I try not to use too much, it's getting warm now so I don't have to give any squirt.

  • @SuperJohndeere4020
    @SuperJohndeere4020  11 років тому

    yeah, there is something about those 30 series injection pumps that makes them not start good. All the 30 series john deere tractors would probably start right up if they had a 40 or other series injection pump installed on them.

  • @SuperJohndeere4020
    @SuperJohndeere4020  12 років тому

    Some of them did, I've a couple with a cab on them.

  • @SuperJohndeere4020
    @SuperJohndeere4020  12 років тому

    The either goes into the cylinders and it creates and explosion. It's kind of like spark plugs igniting the cylinder in a gas engine. A diesel doesn't have any, they require heat to fire.

    my dad had a6600 combine with a 329,it was very noisy,because the engine ran at 2600 rpm, and why did they put both manifolds and the injection pump and nozzles on the same side?, looking like a fire waiting to happen,and the little L shaped hoses for the oil cooler/filter liked to start leaking in the middle of the harvest field, and were a SOB to change

  • @SuperJohndeere4020

    Some are and some are not. We have a few that will start right up don't what temperature it is but then there are some that refuse to start.

    That is one evil motor you have there.

  • @SuperJohndeere4020
    @SuperJohndeere4020  12 років тому

    Yep, strong batteries work wonders when it comes to starting a diesel engine.

  • @jacquespoirier9071
    @jacquespoirier9071 9 років тому +2

    it just harm the engine to try to start it without some heat, a rule of the thumb is that a diesel in good contition start without help at freezing point.

  • @SuperJohndeere4020
    @SuperJohndeere4020  11 років тому

    oh I'm with you there i definitely think the 404s were a lot better engine, and the 466, that is a good engine to.

    Why do you let your John Deere coming in this state ??. And I sincerely hope you gonna start maintaining it good. You clearly see it has to deal with a lot of water inside of it

    yeah, I'm sure if this one had lower hours and had been better taken care of it would start a lot better.
    It has almost 8000 hours on it and they are not easy hours.

    • @SuperJohndeere4020
      @SuperJohndeere4020  7 років тому

      Jason Shipley Well in the first place we don't have a machine shed to keep them in, and in the second place this tractor does not have a heater of any sort.

      Right after he posted that video I did try it, i made a video of it. It's called cold start 4030 with onelonleyfarmer's method.

      I used it on my little 2240 and it helped a lot,

    • @SuperJohndeere4020
      @SuperJohndeere4020  10 років тому

      mythreesonsfarms You had to use it on your 2240 they usually fire right up unless they have a bagillion hours on them. This farm has one to but I have never seen it run.

    • @mythreesonsfarms
      @mythreesonsfarms 10 років тому

      usually don't use it but thought I would try the injector just to see if it worked.

    • @SuperJohndeere4020
      @SuperJohndeere4020  10 років тому +3

      mythreesonsfarms I think it's funny on some tractors. That on the ones that don't start very well don't have a cold starting aid, but the ones that do start pretty well have the cold starting aids. That just seems really to me.

  • @SuperJohndeere4020
    @SuperJohndeere4020  11 років тому

    yeah, its just a poor design. This model was only in the market for four years, My Brother in law has a 4030 and dad took the 329 out of it and put a 466 in it and it's a good tractor. This tractor here has major blowby and it only has 7,000 hours on it almost 8,000 and usually they will go to about 20,000 hours. I'd like to take this motor out and put either a 404 or a 466 in it.

    I would much rather have a 4230 with a 404D,instead of a4030,i do not care much for a 329 JD diesel engine,they are built so weird
