Note we made this rules mistake - defenders in an assault add their CITADEL to the number of dice they roll. Whoops!
No wonder we kept getting Carnage! I thought we had something wrong there, adding Citadel would make a HUGE difference.
Game system’s easy, the trick is in all the special faction-specific abilities and weapon specialisations, which you’ll soon get used to. This is no more complex than Warhammer 40k, Wrath of Kings or Hell Dorado, and it’s absolutely epic once you get the rhythm going. The EOG rule summaries are crucial though while you’re learning it (as always).

Played this about 10 years ago and really enjoyed it. The rules then weren't overly complicated really, but they did take a while - splitting up all the weapons and assigning shots from the larger ships could be prime analysis-paralysis time
I think the rules are pretty different now, though I must admit I never played the original Spartan version.

While I absolutely LOVE the models, and am not afraid of a deep wargame (I still play epic, Warmaster, SW Armada etc.) the Dystopian Wars rules are absolutely obtuse. As the "rules guy" of my group, I just can't be bothered to teach this game more than once. And this is the kind of game you basically have to re-learn every time you want to play again.
Nahhh, it's not that bad. Do you have my summary? The rules are pretty straightforward, you just need a good reference for all the nitpicky special abilities.

If you are a wargamer and you are remotely interesting in naval battles seriously go buy a set or two. The game is very cheap for that quality.
Agreed, Warcradle makes some amazing high end polysterene plastics that absolutely give GW plastics a run for their money!
Now if only they'd support Wild West Exodus more!
@@EsotericOrderGamers I think that needs a refresh/rebrand. The western theme can only take you so far. They need "seasons" and each season would have a different theme and setting in the Dystopian Age universe so it would keep things fresh. 3-4 warbands each year and they would be set.
@@EsotericOrderGamers I would love more WWX... But that would probably be more of a thing if they expanded it through Lost World Exodus (that will have the same 8 faction as DW/AC, but at 35mm skirmish scale).
Sadly, the competition in 28-40mm skirmish is brutal right now. I bet that's the main reason why it's largely on the backburner.
DW stood apart by doing something not a lot of players in the market were doing... Armoured Clash will be similar.
@speeddemonpainting7050 They seem to have a lot of ex-Spartan Games that are just kind sit there on their homepage, but they don't do anything with them.
When you defend against an assault, you defend with ya citadel and ya best ADV/SDV, then add any escort tokens etc. You were only using ya ADV. This is why most of ya results were 8+
Hold on, citadel is added? WHOOPS, that was a big mistake. Well that certainly makes assaults a lot tougher! Thanks.

I love how DW looks! It's a shame they didn't learn from Spartan, the original owners of the game - famous for verbose, complicated, obtuse rules... Even after battling the awful rules from years ago (haven't tried the Warcradle version), we did have fun with the game. But I'm too scared to try it again - it seems like there's just too much going on. And jeez. Who can make it past those verbose cards, am I right?!?!
Really, it is just all the special abilities that make it tricky, but every tabletop wargame has those. Armed with my rules summary and reference you'll be absolutely fine if you have experience with slightly more complex wargames.
Dystopian Wars is in some ways easier than 40k. Most of the abilities are keywords and interchangeable parts. The Orbats have any special rules written out for a unit. The basic loop itself is fairly consistent. Just take it one step at a time.
Weeeelll, I wouldn't say it's easier than 40K. The basic rules are more involved than the old roll to hit, roll to wound, roll to save of 40K. And the special rules are not only more numerous, but all in one place in the ORBAT, not on each unit card (where you only get the name of the abilities) so without custom cards like mine there's a lot of cross-referencing. Then you get things like the pretty complex damage and critical damage and levels of disorder systems, and the SRS tokens phases, etc etc ...
