  • So we looked at some Strat style Vintage guitars... but now let's see something of the single-cut variety. This triple humbucker equipped TONE MONSTER has a virtually infinite number of different tones thanks to 3 volume controls, one for each pickup, which allow you to mix different pickups together. This control layout combined with excellent build quality and sizzling good looks makes it hard to pass up. Let's check it out!

I bought my father-in-law one of these for a retirement present. Swapped the pickups out with some Toneriders, and fitted push/push pots to each volume control. He wanted something 'versatile' and it now has something crazy like 27 different pickup combinations. Picked it up second hand for about £200. Great value!
I have half a dozen or so other Vintage models (strats, teles, and les pauls) and they're all pretty damn good for the price when you find them used!

If I got my hands on this model myself or some other model with three pickups and three individual Valium pods, I would do push-pull switching that activated phase cancellation, putting it in a similar league with the guitars of Brian May. That’s been a fantasy of mine for a long time. I thought of having a semi hollow model built for me with P90s and such switching.

My 2000 Gibson/Epi Black Beauty 3 was my first "real" (pro level/pricey) guitar.
While I tend to favor a Tele body style more, and am not really a "Gibson" or "LP" guy, I still absolutely love it.
An idea I have been contrmplating for awhile is to drill 100-150 _very_ tiny holes of varying small sizes (nothing larger than a pencil tip) into the body and insert fiber optic cable into them, then LED light the fiber optic cables from the back so that the face of the guitar looks like a starry night sky, or maybe a rough approximation of the Milky Way.
It'd be a lot of work, but think the results would be worth it.
A less work intensive way of achieving something similar might be to do the tiny drilled holes, but very shallow instead, and inlay some micro cut Luminlay dots/points.
Anyway, the guitar is one of my faves, but definitely has the irritating Gibson tuning stability problems.
If I ever do the "starry dots" idea above, I'll likely swap out all of the hardware as well for something more reliable from Schaller, Sperzel, etc. Haha.
Anyway, great review, and nice sounding guitar!

Another beautiful guitar from Vintage Guitars. This one offers so many different sound possibilities. And the looks are fantastic! I'd really love to have one, like I always comment about Vintage Guitars, if only there were a dealer closer to me than 200 miles. Very impressive guitar. (The triple pickup single cut is definitely my preference of all offerings in their single cut line.) Another great demo, review, and video, Max. Please keep them coming.

Have you built guitars before, @@HorsesArePeople2? If so, how many?
If I had the capacity to build my own instruments, I would build a semi-hollow one with either 3 buckers like the ones featured here or soapbar P90s. I would have the volume pots fitted with push-pull switches that would activate phase cancellation. I just put that in another comment responding to what somebody else had written.

Another great review and for a black guitar its really quite good looking. I just redid one of my built guitars with 3 humbuckers with chrome tops and 4 wires replacing the original 2 wire zebra humbuckers and put in coil splits. I like the idea of the 3 volume controls and getting all pickups in the middle position. I may try this and add some additional tones. Great playing as always, and I like the clean sounds the best as gain/distortion can cover up just OK pickups. Clean shows the quality of the pickup sounds but you can also see if with high gain if they break up or overdrive the amp.

But this guitar would be great even at a more expensive price tag. Maybe it’s just the one I got, but I can’t express my gratitude toward the vintage company for this awesome instrument! I cranked the action down. I crank the action down way low and it definitely has all of that classic Les Paul swat that you would ever want! Love it love it love it! And it was only about $500…. With the way the pickups are set up and being able to blend the individual pickups, It’s a poor man’s version of Peter Frampton’s iconic Phenix Les Paul seen of the Frampton Comes Alive album. Frampton’s Phenix Les Paul is my “ holy grail guitar,” and while it’s going to take some time to save up to afford the Phenix, I’m definitely interested in the reviewed Vintage guitar. Max, thank you so much for the content you provide, it’s exceptionally helpful, plus you’re rocking the Danzig vibe which is awesome. Thanks again!

It was “beautiful.” Now, I’m starting over and trying to educate myself as to what’s best instead of beautiful and functional. A Peter Frampton model! Three humbucker guitars are not widely made across the market and it has always made me ask why not? When you look at pickup configurations that are popular you see dual singles in different voicing ranges like T-style, lipstick, and P-90s, triple singles like made famous by the Strat, then super strat and super T styles that use HH, HSS, HSH and I have seen some slim line, semi-hollow, and full-hollow styles that use HS combos, yet there are so few that use HHH configurations and I don't understand why.
As you demonstrated here the middle humbucker by itself has a tonal quality that is sparkly and gritty at the same time without ha ing to blend a neck and bridge together. Even then the physical positioning of the pickup in the body of the instrument adds a different tonality that blending the bridge and neck pickups together cannot capture due to the difference on how the vibrations of the string and resonance of the body varies in those locations. I also think that a middle positioned pickup tends to pick up more of the players pick attack as well due to the natural placement of the picking hand which lends to a different quality of note articulation. Which might lend to the favorability of pickup positions 2, 3, and 4 on a strat styled guitar as the inclusion of the center pickup adds a character and voicing that the spacing of dual pickup guitars simply cannot capture.
This video has peaked my interest in experimenting with a triple humbucker setup and beyond the layout and configuration as demonstrated. Thank you for sharing this with us now I am off to start a parts list for one crazy build.

    DRINKING GAME !!!
Try to take a swallow every time Max says the word “Guitar” without passing out or going into an alcohol induced coma.

Is this one different from another v1003? All the specsheets i see on websites mention Wilkinson WJ303 tuners instead of Grovers

This is as far as I know the only 3PU Singlecut LP Custom-Style guitar available today besides the Gibsons that cost 6-7 k. It's great. However the one thing I do not like is that the fretboard has the inlays of a LP Standard. LP Customs have block inlays, especially one at the first fret. IMO this contributes a lot to an authentic look of a Black Beauty.

For that matter it kinda looks like the middle pickup is lowered. Which is interesting because you could probably raise it for an even beefier tone

Most people “slam” the middle pup because it can get in the way of strumming hand/fingers.

I have a three-pickup Epi Black Beauty and the middle pickup is set fairly low for clearance, as you generally pick in that area. I added a Phat Cat P90 to mine to make the middle pickup a bit more versatile..

@@offbeatbassgear That sounds like a great idea actually. I love the middle pick up.

Isn't that considered frampton wiring for a black beauty? I could dig it if it had a ultra thin satin finish......at least on the neck

Does Vintage build one with 3 P90s, a chambered body, 24 frets and a Fender-style vibrato system? If not, that makes this guitar extra tempting, even though I've already got too many.

My cousin has an early 1970’s Les Paul custom that used to be his dads. It’s either black or a very dark red or purple, I can’t remember clearly, but yeah it has three pickups for SURE! He didn’t know if it was worth anything, took it to a shop and asked if it still useable because a few strings are busted!! Shit!

I have a question. I'm going to purchase a guitar with 3 humbucker pick ups in it just like this vintage or a Firefly.
My question is this, when upgrading the pickups, what does one do? Do you get all 3 bridge pick ups? Do you get a combi for the neck and bridge and if so, what type of pick up is the center positron pick up since most combinations are only bridge and neck? Thank you.

What I wanted to know was if the middle pick up was out of phase, looks like maybe not?
