How to Replace Broken Door Handle on Chevy HHR The Easy Way

- Опубліковано 19 вер 2024
- In this video I show you how to replace the interior door handle for a 2006-2011 Chevy HHR. All other installation videos involve totally removing the door panel and drilling out the plastic rivets to replace the entire handle assembly....
Here is a link to the part used in the video: www.amazon.com...
I am not responsible for any damages done to you or your vehicle, this video is for informational purposes only.
I JUST completed this repair on my 2007 HHR after watching your video and it was EXACTLY as you posted. Thanks for saving me money by posting this.
Thank you for this video! I''m a 47 year old woman and was able to install this with no help in under 40 minutes. Probably could have done it faster, but I was not able to disconnect the window control, which meant I had to go at from the over the top and only had a few inches of work space. :)
Thanks man! I went to open the door yesterday and just stared at the handle in my hand for about 10 seconds thinking WTF??
Got the door handle on Ebay for $9 bucks (that includes shipping!!!) fixed in a matter of minutes...wow, thanks again!
😂😂😂😂😂
Sameee
I did the same thing, never had anything like that happen to me before.
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO IM 70 YEARS AND I REPAIR MY HANDLE MYSELF THANK AGAIN.
Excellent video. Changed the driver’s side interior door handle in about 20 min start to finish because of this detailed, efficiently edited video. Gave it a thumbs up. Thanks for creating it.
Just replaced the handle on my 2011 HHR this morning by watching this video.. Wow! You helped make the process so much easier than it had to be.. Blessings of God to you sir and your family for making this video.

Great video. That other one with the drilling and the glue is insane. Thrilled I no longer have to put the window down to get out of the car. Thanks
Thanks for watching, glad I could help!
Ponty Dragon I know right. its crazy to drill out the whole handle. this is a great video.
Thank you for the clear instructions. The handle was available on eBay for about $9, free shipping. But, with such a large number of comments in the past 7 years, it leads one to wonder ... why did Chevrolet make such a flimsy handle in the first place?? Apparently, the handle should only be used to open the door (gently), NEVER to pull it shut!
They also make Metal replacements. I changed all my plastic ones to metal!
I replaced my own handle without having to pay anyone!! a little sweat but thank God no tears!
Fantastic video. Thank you for not spending 10 minutes first talking about all the problems with this and that and instead just getting into it and doing the work. The voice over was really nice as well.
Finally! A fellow Mech. who doesn't waste 20 minutes out of a 23 minute video just walking to the car, pointing at what is to be done, hemming & "uhhh-ing" along. A 10 minute repair condensed down to a 3 minute video. THIS GUY I LIKE!
You definitely make this look way easier than it was! BUT I was able to follow your steps and do it myself! Thank you so much!!
Awesome video I replaced it all by Me And your video for $14.22 My dad taught me how to fix stuff and use tools. I'm a 52 year old female
Lee Ann Snyder what does being female have to do with anything? Good job for being smart and knowing how to follow simple directions in a how-to video.
Mm ah female can do that, well well well are you married ?
@MexicanPizzaYummy well prob because there is a lot of stereotype people who think women know nothing about cars. But I imagine you knew that.
Just wanna say thank you...I followed your instructions exactly and I was successful in replacing my handle. I even bought the metal version so I would t have to do it again. I brought my handle twice and I refused to pay the dealer again. They charged hundreds of dollars. I paid $30 and did It myself...
You couldn't have posted this at a better time. The passenger side handle on our HHR broke the day after you posted this. Thank you so much it was a great help and saved us money and a trip to a body shop or dealer for this repair.
Thats great, im glad I could help!
You should do it the easy way
The simplest, easy-to-follow video on the issue. It's that easy, just like his video.
Paid a lot for other install. They say it's Chevy's ploy to get people to buy whole panel as the HHR door handles are pure junk but at least now I can take care of it myself. Great video. You've gained many new friends with this one..
This video was spot on and better than similar videos. Helped me to accomplish my project fairly easily.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! I just received my replacement door handle today and was looking for a helpful video to walk me through the process. This is the ONLY that I have found that addresses only the handle installation. I cannot wait to install my new handle tonight while using this tutorial to walk me through the process.
I realize this is a 4 year old video. However, this helped me so much in replacing the handle on my HHR. And it was the quickest and least complicated process I found on UA-cam!
A couple of years ago, I changed out the driver's side broken handle, and the instructions were not this clear and precise. Well, the passenger side handle is loose, and I just purchased another handle...I will definitely use your video to make this repair. Thank you.
Thanks, just what i needed. Your video is just over 3 minutes. I hope mine goes just as easy.
Just wanted to let you know that your instructions were spot
on. You made a scary job very easy.
Thank you
+Robert Lorentz thank you Robert! I'm happy to help!
Couldn’t afford a mechanic, got the part on amazon, followed this, worked perfectly really thank you so much!!!!
I'm going to replace the handle on the driver's side today. Thanks for showing me the easy way to do it!
This just happened to me an hour ago. UA-cam really does have everything, thank you so much for sharing your expertise, truly
Have watched several videos regarding this issue! Yours is by far the easiest to understand and see. Camera work is great and installing the spring looks like a breeze compared to the way others have described and shown it. Just received my replacement handle in the mail today, doing mine tonight after it cools down a little. Phoenix is a bit hot right now during the day!
UPDATE: Just like your video showed! Went in without a hitch..... ! Thank you!
Thanks Ron! Thats great, im glad I could help!
Thank you, I fixed my wife's door handle in less than an hour from your video. Now I'm a hero. ;)
Best video I've seen. Don't have broken handle yet, but when I do.....
Just an FYI, the driver's side door from 2009-2011 will have the electric window switches installed in the arm rest, which made it a little harder to pull up the cup in the armrest to remove from the retaining piece holding it to the door. Also, my replacement did come with a pin and a miniscule retaining ring to clip around the tip of the pin. If all goes well, the pin should remain in place without it since the first thing that will happen is you'll drop that tiny clip into the grit on your garage floor! Thanks for this video, BTW! Made this repair much easier than it could have been otherwise.
Yep, that tiny retaining clip would not go on! I wrapped some thin wire around and in the groove to keep the pin in place.
I wondered if this would apply to a 2009. Since I'm needing to do mine as soon as I get around to it..
Thanks for this video. I paid over $100 to replace the first broken handle. I watched your video and just replaced the 2nd handle myself.
THANKS!!!! Fixed it myself in under an hour. Surprised wifey!!! (I am not the handiest) Just got a little stuck on the spring part but After 2 attempts got it in the correct position. Much better than replacing the lock. THANKS!!!!!!
+Larry Gold glad I could help!
I am not OP, I am a woman retired diemaker and you were right on the mark, would be interested in other how to videos, saved myself $170. Thanks
Thank you so much for posting this video i just replaced my door handle. I spent at most 15 for the part and didnt bother to see a mechanic and or pay more for labor.
Gotta give you props, followed your video and worked like a charm. Only thing I did differently was try to remove the plastic pin just in case the metal one didn't work, was able to remove the plastic one without breaking and that gave me the confidence knowing I had a back up option, cheers!!
Thank you for making this video! It was really easy to follow along with and understand. I'm not particularly great with working on my car but I was able to fix the handle in under 20 minutes!
Thanks for showing us how to install and replace a door handle for an hhr 2011 Chevrolet. Clear and concise and instructional.
It tookme a bitlonger as I am at work with interruptions, and I broke a few clips and plugs, but it was done in a half hour. Thank you so very kindly!
Just did the door handle replacement, video was exactly what I needed. I have zero mechanical skills. Thanks
Thanks, of all the videos for this procedure, yours is the best. Saved me hundreds and literally only took 30 minutes (and I'm not that mechanically inclined)!
+John Jett That's great John! This is why I make these videos, more HHR videos to come.
I appreciate your video very much! I got the job done in about 90 minutes. Almost a quarter of that time was spent trying to get the e-clip onto the bottom of the pin. My kit came with two...but after I lost both of them in my repeated attempts...I decided to pray that gravity would keep the pin in place. So far, I'm right! Thanks again!
A big thanks! This is the second time I've had to do this, but I didn't remember a lick from when I did it the first time four years ago. Back at you in four more years.
Great video, I was just making sure everybody has the PIN.. not the superglue in the drill bit kit..
BEFORE you take apart your door 🥴🥴🥴🥴..
I'll get it done next time
Excellent video! Explained every detail in a concise manner. Watched that cable, spring, pin a half dozen times until it was burned in my head. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for the video! I was able to order the part and fix it myself! The instructions were very accurate and to the point. I was done in less than 20 minutes. Thanks again!!!
man thats a synch now. Mines broke and was worried, but not now. thanx for a simple video thats to the point
I replaced both of my front doors last night this video save me lots of money and also I bought 2 metal handles so that way the won’t broke again thanks a lot
You the MAN. Just saved me $230.00 Make sure not to bust door panel cover plastic push pins/clip when removing panel.
Thank you for this video, turned a huge pain in the butt into an easy fix once the parts came in lol
Very helpful video!!! I had some problems with installing the spring but after a few times coming back in to watch the video I got it. The "keeper" that was mounted to the door panel for the spring may have been broken as well on my vehicle. Did not seem like the "keeper" for the spring to attach was long enough. Hopefully, the spring does not come loss over multiple door closings. Very helpful video!!!
Glad I could help James
Thank-you! This is the second time I've had to replace out driver's side door handle- last time I did the whole shebang- this was much easier. Although it took me a lot longer than it did you, it went pretty well and it works.
+Karla McGrail great glad to hear!
This video was very helpful. Only problem I had was exactly how to put the spring. So I took the back passenger driver side door apart too. Ohh yeah then I understood and was very easy.
And I'm a female almost 60. If I can so this anybody can.
Thank you. The handle I ordered had a metal rod with a tension clip for one end, which was a PITA to get in with the angle I had to work with, so I used a zip tie instead.
Thank You! It was not fitting until the Whole assembly came off. Then it went right in 👍💝
Well done to the task at hand. Thanks for not getting off the subject.
I followed the instructions in this video resulting in a replaced handle just like it was demonstrated here. I'm not mechanically talented.
Thank you.
THANK GOD FOR THIS VIDEO!!! my mechanic was gonna charge me a couple hundred to do this for me!
Thank you, this video is still helping people today
Thanks a lot u really help me out. I only bought the door handle an i thought I had to send it back an drills holes into the other one
About to have to do this for the rear passenger door on my 2010 hhr soon as I just saw it was broken somehow today. No idea how or when it happened, good to see it's as easy as I assumed. A lot of stuff on the HHR seems made easy to fix, with the unfortunate exception of like headlights and stuff under the hood, I was able to do a headlight once but it was a bit tricky and took much longer than i thought it would though I managed to avoid having to take apart the front end by going through the wheel well.
Great video! Now I am just at a loss with how to get this dang C clip on the bottom..... Thanks for the help with replacing the handle!!
ok went great. easy as pie the spring was the toughest part getting it in place ,holding the door and than locking the spring. but all in all 15 min thanks
That was a great video! I'm going to the junk yard today! Thank you
Thanks brother for posting this. The instructions and video were clear and precise and made the job very easy. (Darn GM pain in the rear cheapo plastic handles!)
Yeah a perfect video indeed. Appreciate all you folks posting these 'how go's videos!
Simple, easy and to the point. Thank you for the great efficient and quick video, done perfectly.
Im your Six-hundred and Sixty-sixth subscriber I dont know if thats good or bad.
THANK YOU! You, my friend, just saved me over $100.
Thanks for your video I'm not very good at mechanical stuff but I'm going to try and attempt to replace my drivers side using your video I have subscribed thanks i let u know outcome
Great instructions. Saved me a bunch of money.
They sell a metal door handle now on ebay and other places .. no need to replace the plastic POS again .. cant believe car makers don't install a metal door handle .. good god I would have paid extra for metal from the get go
thank you so much changed it today great video!! bought it on Amazon $18! thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video. To the point, and easy (if not delicate) enough that I can do this myself.
Nice video. Nice tools from Harbor Freight. Lol I have the same green tork wrenches. Made the job easy.
Thank you so much you explained very good and very easy
Got a new metal handle thabi am installing tomarrow, thanks for the video
Thank you so much! I have never worked on a car before and I totally did it!
Great video . Everything went as planned. Thanks
Thank you i replaced my door handle and your video really helped!
Short to the point. Didn't deal with electrical connections which were a bitch so decided not to touch them. It is possible to replace the latch without disconnecting them at all. Just get a stool or something for the panel to rest on to relieve tension on the cords. Also have the window lowered so you can look from above. Looking thru the window sucks. Only prob is if one of the buttons to that window goes to shit, you are SOL. Best video beyond the electrical cord removal issue.
Great help. Thanks. Had two break in one week. Weird.
This is a good video and it's helped a lot of people, based upon the comments. But sometimes the "entire assembly" that you mentioned has to be removed. I just replaced a handle in a 2006, that had been worked on, previously. They had used glue and screws to remount the assembly (it had been removed in a professional repair shop, according to my wife - not sure why they had to remove the assembly if it had a stock, plastic pin.). Now the pin was metal and there was no way to remove the pin without removing the entire assembly, again. It was a huge pain in the ass. Anyway, as long as you can get the pin out you're fine - otherwise, you have to remove the assembly to which you referred. That's why you see the videos you mentioned. They're not crazy people who don't know what they're doing. In retrospect, a person might be able to remove a metal pin with an electric cutting tool....maybe. I dunno - there's not much room to work.
Thank you for this! I’m about to replace my father is laws door handle
Worked just like the video showed. Thank you!
Thank you for this. Worked lilke a charm and very simple to follow.
Awesome video man! Thanks, this save me a few hundred bucks!
Thats great Dustin! This is why I make these videos. More HHR vids on the way!
Good video
Thanks you
Made it easier
& simple to understand
I appreciate it
Had to bring this video up for my neighbor. Dumbass thought you needed to replace the handle kit, metal piece and all just to replace a broken handle.
Thanks for the help…I just replaced my door handle
It worked just as you said! Thanks for the information.
This video makes it look so easy that I'm going to try and replace mine this weekend. I like to be confident that I could do it before I attempt. Im confused at 1:30 when you say push the cable end above the handle???
Sure thing, you'll want to push the cable end above the chrome handle, into the cutout in the black plastic that surrounds the handle. Otherwise the cable isn't long enough to go into the handle. Hope this helps, it will make more sense when you're looking at it in person. Good luck
Thank you so much!! Best video for this!! Have to replace both front door handles
Great Video, gave me the info i needed to get this fixed. Thanks!!!!!
Oh my God thank you so much, mechanic probably wouldve charge me $1 million dollars got this simple shit😂😂😂
Good job, appreciate the quick, direct info
Very helpful. U made it easy. Thank u
Fantastic video. Thanks for posting it.
your video saved me a couple of hundred dollars! Thank you!
To Peter Unwin below it is likely that the spring was not properly positioned so that the pin went through it or that the horizontal portion of the spring was not properly caught on the small plastic piece to hold it in place.
Thanx so much, your video was a great help and easy to fallow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Thank you for this video. It truly helped us. 😁
Took it apart, took a while to get the door panel off, put the new handle, spring and pin in, but after about 2hrs trying to get the pin with the cable to stay without popping out, I gave up, going to try taking the handle back off and attacthing a string or small chain to the cable so I can just pull it from inside
