Hello There Come On Stiff Competition On Top Of The World Ain't That A Shame Need Your Love I Know What I Want I Want You To Want Me Surrender Good Night Day Tripper
I grew up 30 miles from Rockford, and read when they left Rockford their audience was around 1500. They came back after Budakon to over 30,000. I wasn’t much of a fan at the time, but it took some “arctic blonde” hairs before I began to really appreciate their music … like Led Zeppelin.
Wow, Holy Crap! Wasn't expecting this to be this good! So far the best live video of them I've seen! A lot of WTF moments( mainly from Rick). Cool to see them throw Kiss' Dynasty album out! Great show!
From what I just learned from a Cheaptrick group i am in, actually someone threw water at toms base. Rockpalast, decided to do some type of fire drill! To resolve the issue with this guy!
Good news is you can still see them play these amazing songs today…saw them 3xs this year snd other than their main big hits they change the setlist up every night 🙌☺️🖤🏁
This band is everything that is great about rock n roll!! Loud, brash, tight, loose, fun and supremely catchy SONGS!!! ALL hail Cheap Trick!!! I saw them back in the day and Nielsen flicked a guitar pick that nailed me directly in the center of my forehead! Love when he will flick a pick up in the air and catch it in his mouth....while just playing the hell out of the songs! Heaven Tonight and In Color were part of the soundtrack of my youth and still in my life.
I once cleared the top of their stage right PA stack at their show so Rick could jump on top of it. He thanked me by spitting his plectrum into my open palm 😂
I caught this tour . Portland ,Or at the Colliseum. There was a huge storm and lighting knocked out the power halfway thru Heaven Tonite,,No amps no lights crowd quiet...Then Robins voice, alone in front of 25,000 people, Would you like to go to heaven tonite? His power is unreal.
Back when At Budokan came out, I thought that if I could mow enough lawns, that I could send my folks on a cruise and have these guys play 3 nights at my house. How popular I would've been. Alas...
Love it!! Yes a Senior in HS party dream come true!!!! I still want to book them at my house…saw them 3 xs this year alone…they’re still Rockin it out 🙌🖤🏁🤘
More bass because the mix was bad. I don't think I've ever heard a bad recording coming out of RockPalast Germany. So sad it happened to this band, too. But as a former bass player, I'm totally digging it.
Jeezus C.. some of you guys need to get some extension speakers for your phones maybe. Sounds better than most bands they opened for- Kansas, Foreigner, etc ad nauseum in the the 70s. I think the reason why they like opening for bands is because number one they're vets & need their beauty sleep and number two they know they can go to bed early resting assured they blew whoever is headlining off their very own stage
Catches them at an interesting point in their career. After Heaven Tonight starts their ascent to global stardom but just as Live at Budokan is starting it’s improbable climb up the US charts. A cult band about to become superstars.
Folks always toss Cheap Trick off as some late 70s or 80s pop band, which is so far from the truth. They are a pure hard rocking band. To this day, they are tight and plain old kick ass.
everyone use to say things like ...So and so heavy metal band is the heaviest band ever.... inside i tell myself...youve never tried to play along with CT.. and emote the same way they did or wrote anything so real to real life than they did. They scare heavy metal rockers . Hardest Rock band ever.
If there is ever going to be a CHEAP TRICK tribute band in the future, they better be very good musicians, as CT are the finest and most complex stylish band still around.
Zander was/is truly one of the great rock vocalists. One minute he sounds like he's shredding his vocal cords, the next he's crooning with that crystal clear tone. 47:53 - Had to laugh when it sounded like he was saying, "We're all all white!"... to a German audience. 😀
A great rockin band without doubt..each man a very talented, creative fine musician and performer that played so well and survived the fast paced touring and other things that only high energy music lovin creative pros could do..thanks for posting a cool trip back in time to hear a great rockin band at their best..even tho sound mix here wasnt the top of the line, it still shows just how very good this band was..and still is!

What a awesome live band. Raw loud and fun in your face rock n roll my all time favorite band from across the big pond. Influenced by British r n b hard rock plus by my all time favourite British band Slade so loud, tight and fun in your face live. Second to none great time rock n roll.
I remember seeing them in Shreveport in the 80s my best friend Patti Robin hugged her and she screens I'm never washing this shirt ever and when we got home she sealed it in a bag Patti's gone now cheap trick was her favorite
this is the real thing ! i loved that little break down prior to ain't that a shame . and the band breaks between some songs. great live rock ! I wonder....whatever
Rockpalast never could get their mixes right in the late 70’s. Every band I’ve seen featured on this show from back then had the bass cranked WAY too up-front, and the guitars and drums always got buried and drowned out. Bun E was one of the hardest-hitting drummers of all time, and you can barely even hear him in this. And then there were those audiences... RIDICULOUSLY subdued, as if they had been pumped full of Valium and threatened by the show’s producers if they responded with anything other than golf-claps.
i saw them in the late 90s supporting the boxset, in a club, and it was totally kickass. if you think im joking they did Hot Love on Conan that same year. watch it. NOW.

lmao this band is killing it and at 12:30 rick unleashes with a bad riff with 5 guitars and the crowd is like....(crickets)... then a few nervous applause... lol. They did not know what they hell they were looking at with Rick and 5 guitars.
Yeah bad mix. Feels its a direct recording only. No Ambience, no Reverb... very strange for Rockpalast....Also why the bass is so prominent. But still, it's fun to hear Robin's vocals so insanely up front and also Tom's clean bass kicks. Ha ha! ( trying to see the upside )
2:06 , 4:37 , 7:35 , 13:40 , 19:40 , 33:50 , 39:36 , 44:09 Thank you Buzz for uploading this because I've been trying to track down the I Know What I Want from this concert! It's all good!
flyinwalenda Yes but it is too loud in this. Burt Sugarman’s Midnight Special had it perfect for Cheap trick because you could hear the bass clearly and the drums and the lead guitar unlike this video.
Love to say because Tom had 12 strings instead of the usual 4 string basses, but we all know the other deficiencies in mix and sound is the uploaders fault and perhaps You Tubes lack of foresight and faith in becoming a deliverer of main stream music content.
Don't like being a negative nelly, and I know it's no fault of Mr. Buzz Roberts... but I can't help but comment that the audio portion of this is incredibly poor. So many things out of whack. Zander's vocals are good, but everything else is way out of proportion. Oh well... It's a great video anyway.. thanks
watching rick and bun e. freakin' play =sooo fast= on 'need your love' at 25:00... and thinking "noooo way; this =hasta= be speeded up"... they were just =inhuman= how fast they could play back then!
Yeah the production on the studio albums were wrung of all electricity of their live performance *ahem* Tom Werman. Check out Steve Albini's re-record of 'In Color' in 1997- its on fire and how they should've sounded in the studio!
+shandi411 Agreed. But please keep in mind that Rockpalast is a German TV show and that over the first years gigs took place in a small studio. Still they were awesome concerts. Once a year the Rock Night took place; a festival with several bands in a concert hall.
This is an amazing relic from a period in their sound that didn't survive very long. Their stage patter, Rick's presence--everything changed somewhat after this. And that crazy broad chorus on Rick's guitar is crap compared to his raw sound today. His playing's super good as always. Bun E's on fire as well. And Robin. Nobody touches Zander, nobody ever will. Thanks for the amazing show.
I totally love Tom's bass guitar, what model is it? It looks like an acoustic guitar, like my acoustic guitar, only it's electric! Cool model! A beauty guitar
Its a Hamer B12A model, medium scale (less than 34, approximately 32"). It has a faux soundhole, so it is a solidbody bass. His current bass is a semi-hollow signature Gretsch White Falcon short scale (30") 12 string.
Saw them in '80 at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas. For awhile, there was word going round that that show had set a record for most dBs at a concert. It was like they were in the middle of nowhere and they didn't give a fuck what it sounded like. It was so loud that it became a distorted mess and gave me a headache. Next morning, an old man ran a stop sign and totaled my car. I was on my way to ask a girl out on a date. When I finally got there, she turned me down. What a 24-hour period that was. Memories!
Pure class. I think iknow enough atbout CT (pay tribute in the band etc) to be able to say - I don't quite know how they got away with it. - would they not agree... It's bloody nice writing, but the formula's fairly 'straight forward no sweat' RnR, played expertly. They play it down to add dissonance but suddenly BAM. Pretty cheesy in places and you're kinds not quite sure whats going on guitar's like this wall of noise lol... the attitude's very Punk. Rick's got the nice guitars... shit me, as do the whole band... they meant business. Japan love that shit. Wtf's up with the sound here...they remained pretty 'low key' throughout their career... by choice, no..?? Imean, I do play a mean tribute to them, but I know nothing about them really... ain't one record here...pretty lame to have only played 'I Want You...' in the band tbh...I think I was a bit too 'keen', kinda ruined it lol... bass players idea, he's the fan. We canned it. Should've done the studio version, for the craic...imean, the obvious clues in the band name, right... cos it kinda is... I'm late to the party. I tear that shit up old school 😎, but I'm late. But better late than never (those levels though shit me...)🥳 🤔😊
The first concert I went to (1978 i think) was Max Webster, ( he was a rocker), cheap trick 2nd, and Head east was the headliner. I love the first Cheap Trick album. Good songs and alot of unique character.
What happened to the end of stiff competition? It looks like and sounded like someone interrupted or stopped the performance because they just stopped playing abruptly and then it cuts to the next song intro top of the world. I would love to hear some feedback on this.
I can’t find it now I’m still trying to find it…but there was another version of this concert on UA-cam and you can clearly see that somebody threw water towards Tom and it also got on his Bass and he was totally freaking out understandably so that person was probably tossed out the whole band was kind of understandably upset about the situation and then as the ever consummate professionals they are just went on with the rest of the concert…and the rest of the fans really enjoyed it
I love it too and feel closer to them because quirky is my middle name, I am a midwestern gal and can totally relate to quirky and corny. I am glad that they hung around long enough for me to learn to love them. Rock 'n roll is in my blood and regret that I didn't appreciate them sooner. I saw them last summer in Noblesville, IN and am totally hooked! Will see them as many times as I can.....forever!!!
That "spazziness" is exactly what hooked me the first time I saw them. (And Robin's voice. And Robin's and Tom's hotness. And Bun E's nerdy awesomeness.) They were the opening act (believe it or not) for some mediocre band (Foreigner I think) and absolutely blew the roof off the venue. Nobody wanted them to stop. Everybody said "Fuck Foreigner! We want more of THESE guys!"
I have a ticket for this show but I bought it to see my new favorite band, Cheap Trick, DrKate L.. In fact I am not sure I can wait until August to see them for that concert. I drove 3 hours to see them in Waukegan, Ill in March. Thinkin' about driving 2-1/2 hours to see them in Louisville, Kentucky. Can't get enough!!! At Genesse, Miles Niels en and his band the Rusted Hearts opened for Cheap Trick and were GREAT! I was fortunate enough to see Miles again in Lafayette, IN a few weeks later. Best $10 and 1/2 hour drive, I've ever spent for a quality concert.
With you Diana! I went to see them the night before Waukegan in Milw. Go to see them every time they are near because they still put on a better show than about 98% what is out there now. Starting to expand what "near" means. Now another studio album--- We Are All Alright
Rockplast THANKFULLY Saved & Archived & preserved this Jem ! Yeah, Cheap Trick, Sooo ORIGINAL & GAVE IT ALL TO YOU ! [ Thanks Rick ] You've Allways been quite Cool with me ! Maybe we can Trade some Unobtanium Guitars.. ( It's 1/18 ) Stay Dangerous ! DC..
Its a greco... ibanez, sold domestically in japan. It was a guitar made from the design of a winner of a “design a guitar for rick” contest in japan, around 1978.
The “rick nielsen model” was based on the red single cut junior that he used in 1978... the “you know you like it” guitar. It never happened. Now billie joe from green day has a similar guitar, made by gibson. Oh well.
Remember this was in a divided Germany. Europe was different back then not much expression was allowed but they enjoyed it. It took a great band like the Scorpions to bring about a wind of change in Germany and Russia. We need that wind of change in China and North Korea but not by bombs but by music and love as that's what will bring about freedom.
It's 1979, disco is taking over... Cheap Trick: "Hold my beer"
Actually Disco was well established, and indeed beginning to wane by 1979.
I saw CT with BOC in 1978
@@brianfergus839he's right, it was taking over the dial because it was cheap for record companies to produce. New Wave was a godsend.
Better late than never. Loved them since I was young dark and fair..
Tricky Rick+ Co. ALWAYS GONNA RAISE HELL!!
Wow, Holy Crap! Wasn't expecting this to be this good! So far the best live video of them I've seen! A lot of WTF moments( mainly from Rick). Cool to see them throw Kiss' Dynasty album out! Great show!
And Day Tripper!
Incredible recording, is this being recorded for television? I will get to see them again Mid April. My first show 77 or 78.
🤘🤘🌹🌹🎸
what happened in the minute 7:28?
Bun E's cigarette set off the smoke detectors/fire sprinklers in the studio!
From what I just learned from a Cheaptrick group i am in, actually someone threw water at toms base. Rockpalast, decided to do some type of fire drill! To resolve the issue with this guy!
The 21st century sucks. I want to go back to 1979!!!

The world's wealthiest garage band! And they earned every penny of it! 🖖🏼😎🤙🏼
I agree, this is a "garage band" at its very finest ~ lovelovelove Cheap Trick ❤
The bass really comes through in this mix.
Cheap Trick ROCKS!
….and yes, there is nothing like Bun E!

The bass high in the mix is awesome!
Seriously cool
Ain’t messin’ around with Mister To Petersen!
12 strings of electric thunder
Tom's bass sounds like it's coming from the sky. Especially at outdoor shows.
I'm a bass player, said the same thing!
Finally, someone knows how to mix bass! Oh yeah bring back Bun E.
More bass because the mix was bad. I don't think I've ever heard a bad recording coming out of RockPalast Germany.
So sad it happened to this band, too. But as a former bass player, I'm totally digging it.

AC/DC
Blue Oyster Cult

Ted Nugent.

I was there as well. They were so loud that it ruined it. The PA soundguy was likely to blame. Did you notice this?
Incredibly lame crowd. come on this band is good and killing it and they sit on their hands. Worst from that era I can recall.
It does not get better for any band and any concert, than CT doing an epic version of "Need your love"
HOLY FUCKING SHIT NEED YOUR LOVE.
Also pretty cool how they sneak a bit of Gonna Raise Hell in that insane jam.
They played it twice of the three concerts of theirs I saw this year…still f@$kn amazing 🤘🏁🖤🙌

Need Your Love straight 🔥...And On Top Of The World.
Saw the Dream Police Tour in Evansville Indiana 👍
Absolutely love the Peter Gunn intro of On Top of the World.
...and u can't get ANY higher!

always "hello" first word has it this was their soundcheck ! brilliant idea
Robin Zander at his best!
Besides ELO I’d say CT did the best job of picking up where the Beatles left off
When will the world openly admit that 1970s Cheap Trick were just that good?
I concur
Absolutely
CHEAP TRICK WILL ALWAYS BE THAT GOOD!!!!
Such a pity that Dagmar must have mixed this. There's not enough vids of this era of CT with good audio. This would've have been absolutely killer.

But better late than never (those levels though shit me...)🥳 🤔😊
Brothers got over two thousand guitars...😳 lol fucking legend 😅

Just 4 shitz & cheap giggles
Love, love, love!!! 💝💖🍨🍧🍦🐱
The first concert I went to (1978 i think) was Max Webster, ( he was a rocker), cheap trick 2nd, and Head east was the headliner. I love the first Cheap Trick album. Good songs and alot of unique character.
Max Webster is the name of the band, not the name of the performer
what is 'fasten your seatbelts' in danish? ;)

44:00 Surrender
What happened to the end of stiff competition? It looks like and sounded like someone interrupted or stopped the performance because they just stopped playing abruptly and then it cuts to the next song intro top of the world. I would love to hear some feedback on this.
I can’t find it now
I’m still trying to find it…but there was another version of this concert on UA-cam and you can clearly see that somebody threw water towards Tom and it also got on his Bass and he was totally freaking out understandably so that person was probably tossed out
the whole band was kind of understandably upset about the situation and then as the ever consummate professionals they are just went on with the rest of the concert…and the rest of the fans really enjoyed it
"Rauchverbot im Studio, die Feuerwehr greift ein!"
Bun E's cigarette set off the fire sprinklers!
can we just get a whole concert with the camera on rick? such a stage presence he's got
Rick said he's kinda embarassed when he watches old footage of him he says he was such a spaz all over the place but I love it!
At Genesse, Miles Niels
en and his band the Rusted Hearts opened for Cheap Trick and were GREAT!
7:44 On top of the world

There are so many comments about the sound, but you got to understand this is late 70's German TV!

kinda punkish at times
Probably one of the best frontmen of all time...keep rockin robin zander
Wow!! Sounds like they were playing at a small venue.
SEMPER FI ❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
God the sound is so shit... I wonder if there is a better recording out there.
1970's German TV show broadcasting with monaural sound? Doubtful.
One can dream lol.
The sound from the Don Kirshner 1977 show is much better.
All the Rockpalast shows from this period, no matter the band, have that same shitty, bass-heavy mix.
Luv this band
Rockpalast el mejor programa musical .........del mundo !!!
What a voice. Great Band.
THE WEIRD CHERRY BURST GUITAR USED IN AINT THAT A SHAME? HAS ANYBODY ANY IDEA ABOUT THE MAKER, MODEL, YEAR' I LIKE IT A LOT, PEOPLE.
I am going to guess that it is a prototype Hamer, likely a Rick Neilsen model they were going to make.
Oh well.
AWESOME!!! #CheapTrick
Rick's a big teaser.
49:50 Day Tripper
Good lord, who was in charge of the sound???!!!
Right??? What the f@#k? Sounds terrible.
13:32 Ain't that a shame
48:31 Good night!!!
Uhh...no, that's Germany. You obviously don't know much about Germans. Didn't matter if it was East Germany and West Germany, or simply Germany.
Boris Karloff YES... WEST GERMANY [ The audience for Rockplast Litterly ( Came in, Off the street. Usually didn't know the band playing....
Where was this at? Soviet Russia?
