Shortcut To Manual: A Bike Tip You Haven't Heard

- We are going to learn how to manual, and we are going to take a giant shortcut - trials style! In order to do this bike tip properly, we need to simulate a downhill street or driveway setup, which requires a new feature for the Shred Spot!
Evan came in to help me build a ramp, which opened up all sorts of new possibilities for the space. Big thanks to Teracis for naming the ramp, and also thank you to my Primer Gremlins for their help with the painting!
The hardest part of a manual is holding the balance point as you coast along - but if you're just starting to work on them, how do you know WHAT the balance point feels like? All the times you've pulled up on the handlebars, do you actually know what success will feel like?
In this trials style method, we'll cut directly to the actual body and bike position, which gives you about 95% of what you need to be able to manual. Now that you know what it feels like to be on top of your balance point, it's WAY easier to find that spot when you lift up the front wheel. Knowing what it should feel like will shortcut your learning time when it comes to locking in manuals for the long haul.

some tips: 1- dont use your front brakes, it's easier to balance sideways w/ the front wheel spinning.
2- dont bend your elbows, bend your knees and try to almost sit on the back tire, that will give you more room to balance since the balance point will move a litle bit down.
3. as you progress, you will see you do not even need your brakes, the real manual is without the brakes, just balancing w your body. but be carefull, in long manuals your legs are going to burn, stop the manual before they fail 🤣. (not that i know everything but what i know so far is this and jus wanted to share so i can see more people manualing around)
I hope that those tips help you guys and sorry for the bad english, im improving it.
This is all great advice, thank you so much!! 👏👏
Man oh man, I just discovered your channel yesterday and been eating it up, everything is pure gold.
Thanks so much, glad you found it! Enjoy!
Omg your tutorials for biking skills are the best and most logical on the whole web!!!
Thank you so much!
I'm getting back into riding through MTB and I'm seriously impressed by your demos and tutorials. Thanks for all you do my dude.
Wow, thanks so much! 🙏
This is exactly what I needed to see to link my back-hopping and manual skills together, thank you.
Right on - so glad this was helpful!
Great video. This channel is a hidden gem, I really find your tutorials section helpful. Greetings from London UK.
Thanks so much!!
Your Channel is pure gold !!!
Thank you! 🙏
I am new to your channel. I ride MTB primarily but I am learning the value of trails skills. Your channel is an amazing resource for this. Thanks.
Awesome, so stoked to hear it! Have fun!
Just got a trials bike and happy to have found this Chanel!
Awesome!!! Which bike did you get?
Something as vintage as myself. A DiamondBack Tekiya w MTB parts. I am a MTBer and wanted to spend sometime on the skate park with my 3 n 6yo. Really loving the channel. Thank you!
Perfect!! Glad you dig the channel, that means a lot! 🙏
That ending was great, fantastic skill man.
Thanks so much! Hope it was helpful!
@@SuperRiderTV everything helps, but still working on my back hops. At most i can hop 4 times in a row, then i lose it. At worst, and often, i loop out or am just off balance quickly. I'm determined to get the hops down bc i feel after that, everything will start to happen
Agreed! That stability on the back wheel makes it all a lot easier to build from, practice makes progress!! 👊
@@SuperRiderTV 👊 your channel is one of my new favorites. Your explanations and tutorials are second to none. You don't rush through it. Perfectly done and thank you for doing it
Awesome, that means a lot!! Thank you so much 🙏
thanks for sharing sir
Happy to do it - hope you found this useful!
The only times I managed to manual was while riding down slopes with a bit of speed. I just moved my hips back energetically and bam the front wheel lifted for a decent amount of time. It was really cool and I was actually surprised it worked. You need to shift your weight from the front to the back of the bike by moving your body back in a very smooth and sudden way. I'm still struggling to really automate the move. Be sure to have your fingers on the rear brake lever.
The couple times I managed to do it was on an old 27,5 hardtail, now I'm struggling to even lift the front wheel with my new 29er. I find wheelies are easier with the bigger wheels though. A trade off I guess.
Hey there little red riding ramp!
Ramp doesn't quite fit the song but it definitely fits the shred spot.
Cheers for the call out, I've already been doing some manual practice using this technique after your preview on twitch and it's helping, I'm sure it'd help more if I already had back hops locked in, though it's equally helping with those as well!
Right on! Thanks again for naming this one, stoked on the way it all came together!
I'm most impressed that your kids came in screaming on cue.
Haha! They’re just as excited to visit the Shred Spot as I am. :)
Yeah but... how many takes ?!
The guy in the grey shirt needs his own channel
Hahaha :)
Awesome Video again! Just got home and wanted to play games but again, its your videos that motivate me to get on my bike totday as long as there is some daylight left :D
Thanks!! Stoked, hopefully a great session with the remaining daylight!! 🙌
@@SuperRiderTV So i was lookling for a spot with some kind of downhill. It makes a really big difference, if you dont have to worry about your momentum and can focus on your balance point!
Yes!!!!
Awesome
you should hook up the shread spot with some led lights
Good call! I just made a major upgrade to the lighting in there - it’s way better now!
Thanks so much for all the tips, great channel! Here’s a question, I just bought a trials bike, it’s so awesome! But suddenly I can’t manual or bunnyhop anymore like on my mtb. Is it normal having this issue with the trials bike? On the other hand the pedal kick is much easier, but lifting my front wheel just by switching weight, with the almost zero compression available…any suggestion?
Did you get a competition trials bike? If so, completely normal to struggle with Bunnyhops and manuals, since the bike is likely a lot longer and lower. You’re in a different body position on the bike, but it sounds like you’re already seeing the trade-offs!
Yeah, it's a used classic 90's comp bike with no saddle, my friend and I went all-in for the style! It does feel very long but like you say practice makes perfect and I don't think there's any secret in the end, just a few more hours on it with make things happen. The day I can bunnyhop to back wheel on it will make things really interesting on my mtb and unlock so much. Thanks for the reply! Cheers!
Oh awesome! There should be more than a few helpful tutorials on this channel, in that case. Have fun!
This is all assuming you can already bounce on your back wheel, which I'm guessing your average mountain biker can't.
They can if they watch this channel :) But honestly, this is just another approach to it, no hopping required, just enough skill use pedal pressure to bring the front wheel up in a static position.
It looks like you are starting your manual with a pedal kick, no?
Correct!
Awesome
Thanks!!
