- Is your GM keyless entry fob unresponse, worn out, or not working at all? If so, today I will help you with a couple of methods of repairing them for you to try to maybe save some money before going and shelling out over $100 for a new fob!
Hey Guys! Thanks for watching, I just wanted to add in that if you have to use aluminum foil I would recommend you glue it down to the inside of the button if you can. I discovered on mine that after several months of using it that eventually the foil will begin to stick to the circuit board from being constantly pressed and then the car will start thinking you are pressing the button when you aren't, so if you can glue it down to keep it on the rubber peice and not on the circuit board I would definitely recommend it. Thanks!
Thank you for your help. I recently bought a 2009 Chevy HHR and I'm still learning things about this vehicle. Thank you again. 👍
Conductive Rubber Keypads - Construction and Possible Temporary Fixes below.
Conductive rubber keypads contain a semi-conductive pill or puck that is pre-molded with a mixture of carbon particles and silicone rubber. The mixture contains enough carbon particles so that the surface is somewhat conductive but with enough silicone rubber to hold the carbon particles together. The pill or puck is permanently attached.
Many times its the actual pads on the circuit board that get worn from repeated use. The puck/pill that is molded into the silicone button can also get dirty. You can clean the pads and the electrical connections with a quality rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. You really do not want to use anything abrasive of the circuit board pads. Sometimes lightly sanding...very lightly sanding the puck/pill may help expose a better layer of the carbon material.
Some people have also used a high carbon pencil or graphite power (dry lock lubricant) on a q-tip and have rubbed a light coating on the pucks. This can be a temporary fix. Also change the battery and clean the connections for the battery as you may also be losing power to the fob,
I can’t believe it worked with the alcohol trick! Thanks so much, saved me $150. I can’t believe this old car has auto start.
Had a meltdown at a Walmart today. Couldn’t get it to turn off. Finally after many tries it did. Thought it might be the battery but trunk would pop open. Came home and watched your video. Definitely needed cleaning on the inside. Used alcohol and swab and removed a lot of junk. Did not need aluminum foil this time but will keep it in mind. You are a godsend. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
OMG IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just bought a 2007 Pontiac Solstice 8 mins after buying it after i left the dealer the 2nd fob did not work...They wanted about $100.00 for a new fob and about an hour labor!!So because of this channel here i saved $200.00......
You have no idea how glad I am you posted this.
I've owned a 2009 Chevy Malibu for about 2 years now. My key fob never worked properly since i got it, with only the alarm button working. Cleaned the motherboard and applied small pcs of foil in it just now and it now works like a charm.
Thank You Very Much.
Had an old key FOB that hasn’t worked since I bought the car! Works now after cleaning and using the foil!! Thank you so much!!!
6 years later an your video is still helping people thank you for posting this video 6 years ago because it saved me and 2024😂😂😂😂
Thanks soooo much. I was looking at videos on how to connect a new fob to my car because I was going to order one. Then this video popped up and I thought I'd watch it. The only thing I had to do was clean the mother board with rubbing alcohol. Saved me 35 bucks. THANKS SOOOO MUCH
Got three fobs with 2008 Buick, only one worked. Tried to fix them with no luck. According to manual, they said touching the circuit board could blow it up. OK, MOSFETS are like that; I thought I had done 'em in. Then your video showed up in my feed, didn't look like you were grounded. So I tried again, using your post for guidance. Result? THREE working fobs now. Thank you.
Hey thanks for your service to the community brother, I was able to fix my mom's fob. I followed your instructions and didn't get to the point where I had to use the tin foil so the cleaning with rubbing alcohol was my solution. Thank you sir for saving my mom an extra expense. Cheers bro.
I haven’t used my fob for 2 years or more. This is the first video I’ve seen using the foil. I went to my garage thinking it’s still not gonna work and to my surprise I pressed the unlock button and it actually worked along with the remote start. I was happy 😊. Thanks a lot for the info much appreciated 🤝
You just made me day that much better. Great hack! 👍 Appreciate the video!!!
Same ..we haven't used ours in bout 2 yrs..the foil worked like a charm 😊
I didn't think something so simple would work. Just got a 2007 LaCrosse both FOB's would open the trunk but that was it. I did what you shown but just added the Aluminum foil to both worked perfect. Thank you very much.
The aluminum foil worked. It's awesome. My key fob didn't work and I tried it. Thank you, both of my key fobs are now working. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.
Just found your vidoe today, trying to find prices for a new key fob ect, went to you tube to find ideas to maybe try to fix it and found your video. So glad I did, the alcohol kind of worked on one pad but not truly working correctly, other button didn't work. Tried the aluminum foil and works great!! Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you so much for this. I have cleaned and changed battery sooooo very many times to be frustrated over and over again. I was researching new fobs when I ran across your video, tried the tin foil, and voila, worked like a charm. I am so happy :) Even got the spare fob to work!!!
Thank you soooo much! Mine worked after adding the aluminum foil! Works like a charm now!! Saved me $60-$150! I really appreciate you sharing this! ❤
Great! Happy to hear.
Cleaning totally fixed my remote! It cost nothing. Thank you for the great video!
Simply Amazing!
I got an 06 Malibu
The remote worked when I got the car. That foil trick worked! I didn’t get it to auto start, but all the other buttons work like a champ
Thanks buddy
I am now returning my new $40 key fob as this worked perfectly and in a dealership it costs $150 to program my $40 key fob.
This literally cost me nothing.
Thanks!!
Glad to hear that it worked!
Why doesn’t it need to be reprogrammed? 🤔
Oh my gosh. Thank you so much for that information. I ordered new fobs on Amazon. One worked, the other didn't. The one that worked lasted 2 weeks and stopped working. I'm going to try what you suggest to do with my old remotes and i pray that it works. It's definitely worth giving it a try
Man, THANK YOU for this. I did the alcohol wipe method. Didn't respond at first, but after a few minutes the fob started working again. So again, THANK YOU.
Wow! This really worked! I just fixed two key fobs for a 2009 buick! This was so helpful.
my son inherited a 2008 Buick LaCrosse from my dad. The keyfobs work intermittently so i am going to try these fixes tonight! The local GM dealer wanted $170 for ONE replacement fob and $160 to program it. RIP OFF!!
I have a 2008 grand prix and omg! It worked you just saved me $80.00 thank you for your videos
I'm a little late.. however I jus jus did this.. 10.05.24 @ 4:22 pm and it absolutely works.. I bought a Grand Prix from a gentleman and he told me it didn't work and hasn't worked for years.. I actually had to do some sodering but I also did the foil trick as well.. with both being done the car responds like new.. thanks for the vid sincerely
I tried cleaning mine, didnt work. Then I WAS going to use the tinfoil method, but then i remembered that I had some "Tin Tape" (basically aluminum foil with adhesive backing). So i used the tin tape, sticking it to the inside of the rubber button, that way it the tinfoil wont flop around lose in there and cause the door locks to randomly engage. After the tin tape, the keyfob works like a charm! Thanks.
I have some of that tape and I'm having the same issue
@@majliescobar8975 did the tin tape work for you? The tinfoil didnt stay in place for me, the tin tape did.
We haven't used our fob and probably at least 2 years...tried it with the foil ...bammmm baby!!! Thank you
It worked!! You’re a genius!! I cleaned it like you said and put the foil in and all the buttons worked instantly!! I glued the foil in because the foil moved around and it didn’t worked initially. Now I’m good. Thanks for the video 👍🏾
Just fixed my girls key fob and she loves me more now thanks g
Thank you!!!!!
$400 freaking dollars is a ridiculous amount to pay for a fob.
Thanks for the fix. I had thought about this fix myself and ran into your video confirmed my fix.
The aluminum foil worked perfectly. Thank you for posting this video.
Thank you, this helped out, I was getting ready to buy a new fob and the aluminum trick worked great!
Absolute legendddd, I just got the car and my key wasn’t functioning and I thought I had to spend extra money. Well not anymore
Wowwwww 😮…. It really worked none of the functions worked until I did this!!.. fully functional thanks loads
Had the same issue and experienced the EXACT results following along your video. Good stuff thank you
Such a big help for my 2006 Buick Lacrosse fob. ♡ so happy to have it working again!
For some reason, my key fob chip was wet with some sort of oil. Cleaned it off but it still didn't work. Foil did the trick! Thanks.
Yes, mine had the oil on it initially aswell, my guess is it is just grease and buildup that gets in there over the years but I honestly have no idea for sure. Seems common on older circuit boards. Glad you got it working!
Mine did the same. The foil was the trick
Thank you for a great fix. Aluminum foil worked perfectly. BY the way. My car is a2012 Chevy Malibu. Same remote. Your the best.
Dude much appreciated, your aluminum foil hack/repair WORKED as you stated 👍
hi pierson ,,,,ive played with it today ,,,,your video DOES work ,,,to an extent ,,,being careful tho as you say ,,not to make too much aluminum foil to the other buttons ...but i HAVE FOUND .,..that GM has made an extra plastic piece or circuit board,,,that fits over the rubber or carbon buttons that you show at 3:13 on your desk ..that fit under the green circuit board ...that i think that they had troubles with it over the years and added that piece ,,,because my wife and i have a 2008 ,,,and a 2009 buick lacrosse ,,,,,,when i opened up my Fob ,,or remote ,,,i had that extra white plastic piece or circuit board in mine ,,,,and i never had any troubles ...and hers didnt have that piece ,,,and hers had the trouble ,,,,WE had an extra set ,,,with HAD the plastic or extra board ,,,and as soon as i put it in ,,,all her troubles were resolved ...but ,,b4 all that ,,,your video has helped me realixe that contact with the carbon buttons and the remote are important ,,,,again thank you bud ,,i would of never known ...if not for you !!!!
Many thanks brother, it works with me after cleaning. Keep it up 💪 and all the best.
You are simply amazing. The new battery didn't get it, so following every step you suggested, WALAH, perfection and everything works as it did when it was new. I appreciate you putting this out here for all of us in this same situation. Now, after not being able to use it for a few years, I found, via you the total solution. Thank you again.😊
Thank you!!! Just wiped them and put aluminum and now they work like brand new!! I’m so happy hehe. God bless you:)
still works to this day, thank you
The foil trick actually worked thanks a lot great advice!!!
The foil worked for my son's car! Thank you!
You saved me a lot. Thank you for sharing this video the rubbing alcohol helped my remote
Thank you so much❤❤. Had a fob that would lock but not unlock . Cleaned and added the foil on the unlock side. It worked.
Cleaned it didn't work about to try the foil. I'm really hoping this works but thank you for the video this is amazing even in 2024 I'm still finding some good content on cheaper DIY fixes
the aluminum foil fix worked great!
Tanks this guy save me 100s dollars I did my self fix my remote works great after I clean the inside
The foil worked like magic! Many thanks!
Good to hear! If it starts to lock and unlock itself then you could glue the foil to the rubber part to keep it in place.
Thank you so much I got stressed out quick locked my key in the car my work badge was in there but i found the old remote to my car and only the alarm button worked so thank you so much
Great tip on the foil! Thanks to you now have 2 working fobs!
Thank you for posting this! Just worked for me!!
Thank you very much. I got it to work with a quick clean.
Good to hear!
Thank you!!! Mine just needed to be cleaned and works great now!
THANKS !!!! We were able to fix 2 key fobs. One required the foil and one didn't.
Thanks very much. It works like a charm after I cleaned and aluminum foiled the contacts. Much appreciated.
Thank you soooo much!!! It worked after cleaning and aluminum foil!
Thanku thanku thanku. This just saved me money. The foil. Actually worked
I took the fob apart and used a pencil eraser on the button contacts, worked for a while
Thank you for this tip, it WORKED!!!! AWESOME!!!!!
Oh wow I’m blown away 😅I saw you do the remote start and figured out that worn out button on my fob can actually do 😱 I can remote start my 08 GMC?
Yep, if it has that remote start button on the very top then your vehicle is equipped with remote start.
@@piersonthecarguy9396 🙌🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 oh how I wanted this forever 😅
Thanks Pierson, the foil worked!!!
Pierson .....want to thank you for posting ,,,quite the thing ,,basic ,,but informative ,,,got my wifes buick lacrosse remote working again ,,took me a few times ...but it works ,,,,i dont dare to play with the call button tho ,,,the horn went off without stopping ....so i declined on putting the foil there ,,,hehehe disturbing the neighbors ,,,esp at a condo !!! hehehe thank you bud ,,,and happy new year
Mine worked after doing this thank you
Thanks.. just purchased a 07 Buick Lacrosse and unlock buttons didn't work on either fob. Thanks to the foil both are working now.
Thank you, this worked like a charm!!!
Just watched this. Cleaning the contacts and pad cured it. 👌
Thank you it worked like a charm
I used copper shim stock and crazy glued a small piece to the back of the rubber button. The graphite filled deposit on the back of the rubber button must ware off after a while, Copper shim is the best but you must make sure the shim stock is not tarnished. I saw where you can buy the graphite filled glue online and I suppose you can reapply some of this on the back of the button to restore the switch. But copper shim is better.
literally saved my life, thanks
I tried so much, but the best for me was buying a new case on eBay for a few bucks and just moving the circuit and battery over to the new case. Been good for 3 years now
Yeah, sometimes a new case is the only option if the buttons are too worn out. I eventually did have to do this on one of my fobs before I sold the car because one of the black contact points fell off from inside the rubber.
Thank you. I saved $15
Awesome video! Worked for me.
Saved my day thank you dude!!
Hi. I just bought a 2008 g6 hardtop convertible. The fob didn't work for anything. I cleaned it like you said...nothing. put foil on the contacts and lock unlock work still can't get trunk to open. Could it be a fuse?
Would you mind doing a video on your process of gluing the foil it to the rubber piece, so that we do it correctly, also the type of glue that would be best. Thank you.
Just use a super glue gel that says is for rubber ect
Bingo exactly what I needed! Great video and how to!
Omg I just did it and Bomb its working now my trunk opens
Fixed thank you sir!
Can switch the greens boards to a new fob ?
It worked thanks man!
it's works amazing. thank you so much
Or do you know if i can coean, use foil, and then a pencil, because the black button that touches them on the inside is missing exposing only the little metal dot? Please and thanks
What if you start losing distance to lock and unlock doors and trunk ??? i changed battery twice to make sure i didnt buy bad battery's and i cleaned the contacs on fob. Thanks
Bro , the foil part works. Thanks
Good to hear! If it starts to lock and unlock itself then you could glue the foil to the rubber part to keep it in place.
Does it work with the gmc terrain 2011??
Worked thank you.
I have a Pontiac g6 08 I just brought a keyless entry remote all the other buttons are working expect my remote starter should I try this?
How do you program a new key fobfor 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix
good job mate😊
Thanks, I'll give it a try !
😊👍
Worked perfectly thank you. Tin foil savior.
