  • This is a basic repair video for most GM vehicle keyless remotes. In this I explain the most common failure (battery clip comes unsoldered from PCB) and how to repair it. I also give a quick tip on how to clean the button contacts for better operation.

    A true DIYer. While another YTer is using cleaning solution, this gent actually solves the problem by completing the circuit. Reflow the solder. The force is strong with this one.

    Thank you so much for this video. I had no soldering experience at all prior to watching this. I bought an inexpensive soldering iron that came with some solder, watched this video and went to work. I fixed both of my Pontiac remotes! The battery clip had fallen off in both of them. Super easy to follow video and very informative!

    I give you credit for horsing with this thing. We have a 2006 HHR (and it's 2023) and ours hasn't worked forever. The case has a crack, the battery holder was disconnected on one side (like yours), and the contacts were bad (I tested them using some tin foil and got the thing to "kinda" work). I just went on Amazon and bought a genuine GM replacement for 37 bucks (with shipping) and the Chevy dealership in town said they'd program the thing for 25 bucks. Good job and you've got more patience (and better soldering skills) than me. Maybe if it breaks again I''ll try to fix the damned thing.

    Great video. Have a 2005 Pontiac G6 where the battery clip disconnected. Watched this vid then went out and got a soldering iron at Walmart plus some solder. paid about $9. The battery holder didn't click into place so it's just solder holding it but it works now. Without this video i would have went out and bought a new FOB then would have to deal with programming it. Thanks !

    Have two GM remotes not working. Look exactly like yours. Soldered up fine and cleaned the button and contacts with rubbing alcohol. Still not working right. Red alarm works but other buttons do not. I took it apart and jumped over the copper and all items worked. So I have a problem with the contacts. Is there another way to rejuvenate the contacts? thanks for a great tutorial.

    • @ManicMender

      That sounds like the graphite pad on the back of the button pads has worn off. Dorman makes replacement key fob bodies, that have new buttons, all you have to do is install your old circuit board into the new fob. These are found at most major auto parts stores and online.

  • @filthyadams3683

    Battery works, horn button works, top 2 buttons stopped at same time. All connections completely clean and seem intact, graphite pads make connection - tested with foil too and still not working. Cannot short the top 2 buttons on back to make work at all. Is there anything else I can try? Thankfully I have a backup, but would really like to fix this one. Thanks for any help and I greatly appreciate your video and thread.

    Hey manic I have a question. I have a 2004 cts with the mother board that has the contact buttons like that mother board and I ordered a smart fitcamx smart key fob and I'm wondering if I can soder the contacts? It requires sodering the wires onto the buttons

    • @ManicMender
      @ManicMender  Рік тому

      Thanks for sharing what your trying to do. I looked up those key fobs, those look pretty cool. As for the soldering, yes, you should be able to solder directly to the copper contacts. They are made out of the same copper foil as the every other contact on the board. You will likely want to add a bit of flux to the contact, then add a bit of solder onto the contacts, then solder the wires to them accordingly. Let us know how it goes.

    I opened my remote to find that one of the smaller connections around the battery was in deed cracked. I bought a soldering iron and soldered it back together but it still doesn't work! I also tried putting foil between the buttons and chip, no dice. The board and contacts are in good shape and I cleaned the connections with rubbing alcohol and a Q-top. Any other ideas?

    • @ManicMender
      @ManicMender  7 років тому +1

      If you have a voltmeter, set it to DC volts, and check if battery power is getting to the board, trace the circuit to the first component after the battery and test there. If no power, then reflow the solder joints again at both the positive and negative contacts. Also, double check the battery is installed correctly, dont ask how I know that one:)

    The key to a good fix is to remove the non leaded solder. Then resolder with leaded solder. The non leaded solder is brittle. Leaded solder will ensure this won't happen again. Also use flux, will ensure a clean melt.
    And solder has a L in it. Not soder.
    Traces are connected between layers in veers so no need to fill them.
    And those "resistors" look like capacitors.

      possibly try a scrap yard, sometimes they have the keys just tossed inside, sometimes the scrap yards keep them all together inside, sometimes they are still hanging from the ignition. Just look for the part number on the back of the key fob, and match to yours.

I just don't understand how this retaining piece works. Its just a piece of metal with 4 fingers sticking out. 2 on each side. Remi Moore if you go to keylessfix.com, you can get a little pad that goes between the circuit board and your buttons. I had this issue few years ago and these worked like a charm. It helps create better contact between the two layers.
      BTW I don't paid for saying this. Just letting you know what worked for me. Probably the best $18 I spent. (idk how much they are now though...) Good luck!

    I did this on one of my son's G5 remotes because both quit working. The front of the clip was still attached but both sides had come loose. I did it exactly as the video shows except I used a tiny dab of flux. When I got into range of the vehicle, the alarm kept going off on it's own :) Had to take the battery out to stop it. Any suggestions as to what I did wrong? Also, on the other remote the clip inside is completely detached from the board. One of the little prongs that fit into the hole on the sides is gone. Is the clip useless now or can I use possibly a 20 gauge tinned wire in place of the prong to compensate?

      sorry for the delay in my reply. The flux may be causing a small short, or the contacts have something on them for the panic button. As for the other remote, your idea of piece of wire, tinned, and soldered in the hole should work. I think installing the wire first, then solder the clip to it should do just fine.

      also, watch this quick video on how to change the battery. Its another UA-camr, but no need to reinvent the wheel when he did a great job. ua-cam.com/video/Vjjd-SxeTNQ/v-deo.html.

      i changed the key fob as well as the remote because the old buttons were hard to press. After the whole switch, everytime i press the remote, it would respond 1 out of every 20 times or so. The red light in the center usually lights up as well when i press a button but barely lights up now

      +Khaled El Maadawy , have your tried bending the contacts for the battery? They might not be making good contact. Also, try to clean the button contact points with alcohol and a Q tip. Clean the entire board with distilled water and an old toothbrush. Try all these and let me know how its doing. Also, sometimes batteries sit on the shelf in a store for a very long time, it might be worth trying another new battery if all these ideas don't work

    hhmmm.....why in the world are/were these device`s battery compartments not soldered to withstand the small force that the clips need to hold them in place longer?

    If it’s still screwy you can always goto a local locksmith shop for more than half off of what a high priced dealer would charge for a new fob.

    So as long as the positive battery terminal isnt broken inside the remote, buy one from amazon (7-8 bucks) and swap the electronics to the new case w/new button pad, throw away your old case and buttons, will most likely work like new! AND.no programing....two minute swap...GOOD LUCK! PS, alot of them come with a new battery too! BONUS!

      Buy a colored FOB off Amazon for $10. Usually a 2 pack. You can use the new colored case, battery, the rubber key pad, and the clip. So then everything will look new and cool.

    It will solder better if you run some sandpaper on the end of the solder gun and clean it up till you see clean copper,just a TIP you ya,,Good job.

    • @ManicMender
      @ManicMender  5 років тому

      A
      @Mark Brad. Your almost there. Just that soldering tips when new are nickel coated. So only clean down till you see silver. If you go thru to the copper, the flux will eat the copper away very quickly and ruin your tip.

    You can actually get these for less than $30 for a good used one off eBay that has instructions, new battery etc and not have to spend a few hundred bucks as you say.Thanks for sharing though.

    Anyone know what to do if you accidentally clip a resistor?

    • @s99614
      @s99614 5 років тому

      Solder it back in place. It won't be easy to do, but it is possible. I've done it once. The hard part is that unlike regular resistors, there is nothing holding these surface mount resistors in place.
