In the 70s I was a student in the Soviet Union. We all were fond of figure skating, and the contemporary sport life gave us a lot of examples of outstanding Russian figure skaters, who we were very proud of. But even then, despite the Cold War and propaganda we appreciate talented foreign sportsmen. Toller Cranston was definitely a favorite of the Russian public. I admired his artistic skating, his passion, his unique technics, and was always upset when his score was lower than one of other skaters, who used only traditional moves. At that time I had no idea of Toller's many talents. Now I can say, he was a unique artist and personality. He created beauty as naturally as he was breathing! Thanks to the authors of this film about him. Such a pity, that his life happened to be so short...
Russian public appreciates firstly the artistic skill, not the nationality! And the same with Japan public. This is what different both mentioned above from the the North American figure skating lovers.
