I didn't care much for Ruben I always thought it was set up for him to win he couldn't put his voice anywhere and at a high range like clay could.Clay was alot better singer and I will always believe that.And now I think I know why clay didn't win it wouldn't have changed my opinion. I tell u I would get on that phone and I voted hundreds of x each time we had to vote.id hit redial and vote over and over but anyway clay all the way.I would of liked to have seen it live I bet it was amazing.

(The next season 2-3 numbers were set up for EACH contestant!) With Clay receiving, as TWO producers admitted later, ‘Clay was receiving milliions of votes OVER any other contestant each and every week’, with the number of viewers who voted furiously that last night the one phone line for Clay just couldn’t handle the votes coming in for him. Remember, his mother, Faye, said she couldn’t get ONE vote in. Ruben’s mother, Emily, said she got in 200 votes! See the difference? The producers knew what happened, but had to give the ‘win’ to Ruben by the final number of votes that got through; and Ruben’s showed more. One producer was heard saying, ‘Of course Clay won’. But, it didn’t matter. Clay received more accolades, sold more records, went on at least 10 head-lining, and solo, tours, and became more successful. American Idol ‘made it up to him’ by having CLAY host the AI Christmas special that fall, and narrating an AI-produced special a few months later. He came back as a guest on AI more and made more appearances on talk shows and was even in a sitcom and depicted in, and sang in, with Chaka Khan, in an episode of Phineas & Ferb and was one of the celebrity storytellers on an Arthur The Aardvark CD. Clay was invited to a Lincoln Center concert honoring the great Neil Sedaka to perform ‘Solitaire’. (I was there!) The only performers who received standing ovations were Clay, Connie Francis and, of course, Neil. There were about 8-10 other great singers from the 60’s era who also performed; but just three standing ovations were given! Clay released more CDs. Clay was on Broadway in Spamalot for two three-month stints. He was asked back by Mike Nichols when ticket sales started dropping! He held the largest ‘stage door’ crowd on his final night The Schubert Theater had ever seen in its history! He had to stand on the top of the marquee!! I like Ruben. I don’t blame him for anything. He’s humble and has a stable personal life. Hubby and I saw Ruben and Clay this past January at one of their stops on their current co-heading tour. Both were amazing! Their dual performances as The Beets on The Masked Singer were incredible. (I do apologize for the lengthy post! 😏)
