I can easily believe that Jimi would lend a hand to someone in need. Offstage, many people described him as shy and very humble. Others described him as a supreme musician but he never thought so himself.
I heard recently (maybe on the JH biography on UA-cam) that, when he joined the Isley Brothers, someone described him as quiet, respectful and a fast learner.
Bill Graham, quote, "The Band of Gypsy's 1969 new years eve show was the best damn live performance I've ever witnessed, bar none.. Jimi touched the hand of god that night"..
I can well believe it was all probably a bit uneven overall but for what it's worth I think We Gotta Live Together from the album is great. It made a huge impression on me when I heard it in the early 70s as an example of raw soul.

Fabulous story! My brother in law who now lives in Canada, grew up in London England... he tells the story of how one day in the mid 60s when he was a young teen ager, he was in a pharmacy and standing in line at the cashier was the Jimi Hendrix Experience - Hendrix, Redding, Michael. He recalls they were wearing wild outfits but there was no kafuffle. My brother in law said he did not recognize them at the time but being a rock music fan, it was not long after that he realized what a brush with fame he had had.

I agree...but read a couple of books on Hendrix...it seems that during the last couple of years of his career-and life--he was very troubled, using too many drugs, sometimes abusing his women, etc. He was truly astonishing on guitar--I saw him twice, and actually met and talked with his dad, at Jimi's gravesite, many years ago. His dad was nice enough, but clearly did not really understand how amazing his son was!
Some definite inaccuracies here, from one who lived in the SF Bay Area and went to the Fillmore ballroom (prior to Fillmore West) starting in '66. Bill Graham was the manager of the S.F. Mime Troupe. They did a benefit for the troupe at the old Fillmore ballroom (not a movie theater), he saw the prospects of concert promotion and moved into it from managing the mime troupe. When I first went the Fillmore there were some of the new local groups, i.e. Quicksilver, the Dead, Big Brother, Jefferson Airplane, playing with some of the old, black, local (I think) soul groups. (First time I ever saw someone play a guitar with their mouth). The Fillmore on Geary and Fillmore in S.F. went on for several years before Graham took over Winterland and eventually the Carousel, which became the Fillmore West. Then came N.Y. and the Fillmore East.
Jimi Hendrix was standing around and asked - he asked! - if he could help unload a truck. He didn't presume anything.Yes! Jimi was "a real human being."
I am a life-long Hendrix fanatic, and have done much research on his life and times...and this guy's stories do ring true!..Jimi played the Fillmore East for the first time, on 10 May 1968. That must have been the day OWL met helpful Jimi!...Hendrix did play the Fillmore West, for a couple nights in 1967. It is hard to believe, that OWL was a qualified electrician at age 14!...I am sure he was not being paid a Union wage!...It took, and still takes, a long apprenticeship, in order to be an actual "Electrician"...My late uncle was one, in Seattle, for 40 years, and made great money during his career. Bill Graham was a very tough venue owner, but fair to most of his hired musical acts. Much has been written about his friendship with Hendrix. Graham died years ago, in a freak accident, when a helicopter he was riding in, crashed into high-tension power lines, falling around 200 feet to the ground. He is a Bay Area legend, for sure! On Jimi's amazing "Band of Gypsy's album, recorded live at the Fillmore East, it is Bill's voice that introduces the "new" band to the audience. I am so happy that you recorded this man's story, as Hendrix passed through this life so quickly, and so many of his contemporaries have died, making original material concerning Jimi very rare information!
May 10, 1968 had to be when this encounter happened...by Jimi's 2nd appearance at Fillmore East, he was not as casual with the public, and was hanging out with an entourage of messed up people.
it is not unbelievable, it is not a surprise, it is a great story for you, but anyone who has grown up to know and love him, would not think this as extraordinary as it sounds.

William Franklin "Billy" Graham Jr. KBE is an American evangelical Christian evangelist. Bill Graham was a German-American impresario and rock concert promoter from the 1960s until his death in 1991 in a helicopter crash. You're welcome
Hey, maybe that is right! I don't know. I hope AL sees this, maybe he can reply to some of these comments. Hey, I think my great grandfather nad great grandmother were named Martines, Sicilian and changed their name to Martinez at Ellis Island. AL I think had the same family name and they changed it to something different but don't want to say his real name in public, because he keeps his real name private and calls himself "Owl Bob" or "AL."
EVERYTHING in this story is correctly correlated. Yes, the Joshua Light Show is well known. We all are familiar with Chip monk, Bill Grahm, The Fillmore's East and West, etc... HOWEVER..... The Grateful Dead "WALL OF SOUND" was not created until after, or maybe late in 1972. The Fillmore East closed (I think) in 1970 or at the VERY LATEST 1971. Probably the guy simply blew all the amps the Dead were using because everything else in the story is well documented. Also, Electric Lady Studios opened in 1968 if I'm not mistaken and the final 2- LP record, Electric Ladyland, Hendrix's masterpiece was recorded there. the song All Along the Watchtower was the biggest hit from that LP. Finally, I don't think that the Fillmore EAST even opened until 1968. So, GREAT story, but the timing is a little off and when he says years, it was more like months or maybe a year at most. Lucky and brilliant guy!
I was just trying to figure out why plugging into 110V would blow up the system? All P/A gear runs on 110 . That's a standard wall outlet. And in the event a system does "blow", the speakers wouldn't break free of their mounting screws and get launched through the grills and out into the street! lolll... with the speaker cable "unfurling!" lolll smh All that would happen is that a fuse would blow... And there can't be any speaker cable flying around and unfurling, becs the speaker cable doesn't get connected to the speakers themselves. All of the speaker cable is behind the cabinet on the floor and gets connected to a terminal on the back of the box. You'd need a half a stick of dynamite inside each cabinet to do any of that kind of stuff... Oh, and I guess I was wondering how you become a Master Electrician by the age of 14 and you're learning a lot on the job? But, I don't want to split hairs..
OK.. I knew the Fillmore East was in NYC, wasn't the Fillmore West in San Francisco? where is Owl Bob, where is this conversation taking place with Bob? This looks like a real cool place where this is being filmed, or taped.. wow, I wish I had some place way out in nature like that.. awesome..
bill graham's the "fillmore east" didn't open until march 8, 1968, altho he did have possesion of the building (the fillmore auditorium) in 1967. jimi played "filmore east" on may 10th 1968. however, bill graham did book jimi at "the fillmore" (west) june 20-26 1967 directly after jimi's u.s. debut at the monterey pop festival a week earlier. jimi was scheduled in london for a studio session july 6-7 1967 and is known to have played nyc between studio sessions in los angeles june 28-30 and the london sessions. it would have still been the "fillmore auditorium" at this time (if this is where he played).
Remember he was working. He was unloading a truckload of equipment. You think a memorable conversation was not in his mind. And he didn't know who Jimi Hendrix was.
I think Jimi did record "Axis Bold as Love" at Electric Ladyland, possibly more, but that may be the best-known music to come out of there. I also saw him in 1967 at City Park in New Orleans, but didn't get to meet him. He held a concert in the park's 15,000-seat ( or so) stadium, but only about 500 of us were there. He just wasn't well-known in this country at that time. Fat Mattress opened for the Experience (Noel put in a full shift that day.) The fans who were there were sort of sad at the low turnout, but Jimi was incredibly nice, laughing and joking between songs off the first Hendrix album--I call it the "fisheye album" because of the photo on the cover. We thought he might jam for 30 minutes and shut down, but he played for us for about two hours, all the first album and many wonderful old blues classics, including "Born Under a Bad Sign," smiling all the while and thanking us for coming out. He did all of his stage act, the tongue-flick thing, the part where he buried the neck of the guitar in his amp, and an interlude where he got incredible sound out of the part of the guitar covered by the little metal plate (I don't know what it is called, or the strings underneath it, but he played it.) 'll never forget it! He was a remarkably nice, outgoing, friendly man and such a breathtaking musician. To this day I still dearly love every note of his music. I know the band finally fell apart (I liked Band of Gypsies too, however) but I did think Noel and Mitch added so much to Jimi's playing. Those were the days when all was well among them. Arguments and disagreements caused the breakup a few years later.
Electric Lady Studios was opened on August 26, 1970 (nearly a month before Hendrix's death) and Axis was finished December 1, 1967, so he didn't record that album there. In fact if I recall right only a few songs were recorded by Jimi there including Freedom, Dolly Dagger, and Night Bird Flying, and maybe a few more. What a rare sight to see, hendrix in front of merely 500 people. I'm glad you had that experience, maybe when I'm dead I will too.
Nope, your encounter with Jimi in New Orleans was in 1968...no Fat Mattress yet formed. AXIS was recorded at Olympic Studios, in London, 1967. It's been a long time ago, so I forgive you for your timeline mistakes!
Dude - from here on in set up the camera on a TRIPOD , don't move it, and try not to interrupt and say stuff that doesn't add anything. This guy is a treasure trove and obviously feels a calling for storytelling. Do him and us some justice while he is still with us.
built by Owsley Stanley, the guy who distributed the first mass dosages of LSD to the Bay Area music community, in 1966. He was some kind of genius, but wound up doing time in prison, and eventually migrated to Australia, where he had a thriving business making cool, expensive jewelry. He died at age 74, in a one-car accident. His nickname was "The Bear"...why, I do not know, as he was not a huge guy.
Likely was mentored by a relative at an early age...He may have been competent, but was not a Union-approved Electrician...that achievement takes a long apprentice-ship! But it is a lucrative skill!...My uncle retired as a low-ball millionaire, after 40 years, investing his money wisely.
+EnchantedStarlight I think it has something to do with the fact that there were a lot of poisonous snakes at my house when he used to live here, around the time he first lived here. He claims that he warned them to leave or they would die. Most of them left. Then he called out to a big Owl who lived in the woods. The Owl came and killed and ate the remaining snakes. I bought the house from him many years later, and the owl still lives in the woods. You can hear him nearly every day in the summer. So I guess he was kind of saying he was like an owl for that and other reasons.
He called out to a big Owl to come and eat poisonous snakes living around his house that didn't heed his verbal warning to leave or die. And the Owl flew over and ate them, huh??.. Eastern screech owls like to keep texas blind snakes in their nests to keep it clean of insects and parasites. So I think he should be called "Screech Owl Bob". :)
We are filled with guru's in the world that have met so many greats , someone should set up a UA-cam page for gurus to tell their tails aka stories....
Oh OK I get it! He said he is a Griot! "The main job of the griot was to entertain the villagers with mythical stories... " ......and so Screech Owl Bob's Jimi story is strictly for entertainment! Nice :)
This particular story I am almost for sure was something that really happened. Some of his other stories are hard to tell if they are true or not, but the way he explains this story and based on how I know him, I could tell he was telling the truth, repeating himself that it actually happened, looking me directly in the eye, etc.
Yes, it would actually be almost unforgivable to tell a story about meeting Jimi, if it didn't really happen! Does Screech Owl Bob have any pictures..from that time? Of anything , not necessarily Jimi! But maybe of his apartment..? Or the Fillmore? Or NYC? Or anything else cool? (I'm from Carmel, Ca btw, and met Bill Graham (Uncle Bobo he was called by the Merry Pranksters) a couple times..I used to go to Grateful Dead and other shows alot in the 80's ;) )
Sounds fun! Here is a video of Owl talking about the New York City art scene he was a part of in the 1980s with a whole photo album of his friends, many of them turned into famous artists, other people in the album like the owner of CBGB and these art scene people. ua-cam.com/video/3DyG7kJwUpI/v-deo.html

Electric Ladyland was recorded at the Record Plant in New York, NOT Electric Lady Studios, which only opened in 1970.
@@nodaysback1 There is room for doubt...yet his story does fit certain timeline, concerning the Hendrix part.
OK.. I knew the Fillmore East was in NYC, wasn't the Fillmore West in San Francisco? where is Owl Bob, where is this conversation taking place with Bob? This looks like a real cool place where this is being filmed, or taped.. wow, I wish I had some place way out in nature like that.. awesome..
More like in an alleyway!..lol
I love u jon
Yeah! Yeah, really nice of you.
bill graham's the "fillmore east" didn't open until march 8, 1968, altho he did have possesion of the building (the fillmore auditorium) in 1967. jimi played "filmore east" on may 10th 1968. however, bill graham did book jimi at "the fillmore" (west) june 20-26 1967 directly after jimi's u.s. debut at the monterey pop festival a week earlier. jimi was scheduled in london for a studio session july 6-7 1967 and is known to have played nyc between studio sessions in los angeles june 28-30 and the london sessions. it would have still been the "fillmore auditorium" at this time (if this is where he played).
It seems like Albert king was a staple at alot of these fillmore shows.
He had nothing to say about his "30 min" conversation with Jim Hendrix.
Nothing
Remember he was working. He was unloading a truckload of equipment. You think a memorable conversation was not in his mind. And he didn't know who Jimi Hendrix was.
Do you remember every conversation you had with a random person? Maybe if he knew it was Hendrix then talked to him it would've been different.
cool story i got a friend who has the woodsock pa speakers and pa wikked big piles
Wall of sound was partly 72 and fully used from 73-74
I think Jimi did record "Axis Bold as Love" at Electric Ladyland, possibly more, but that may be the best-known music to come out of there.
I also saw him in 1967 at City Park in New Orleans, but didn't get to meet him. He held a concert in the park's 15,000-seat ( or so) stadium, but only about 500 of us were there. He just wasn't well-known in this country at that time. Fat Mattress opened for the Experience (Noel put in a full shift that day.)
The fans who were there were sort of sad at the low turnout, but Jimi was incredibly nice, laughing and joking between songs off the first Hendrix album--I call it the "fisheye album" because of the photo on the cover. We thought he might jam for 30 minutes and shut down, but he played for us for about two hours, all the first album and many wonderful old blues classics, including "Born Under a Bad Sign," smiling all the while and thanking us for coming out. He did all of his stage act, the tongue-flick thing, the part where he buried the neck of the guitar in his amp, and an interlude where he got incredible sound out of the part of the guitar covered by the little metal plate (I don't know what it is called, or the strings underneath it, but he played it.)
'll never forget it!
@@IntScout3 The "Axis" album was recorded at Olympic Studios in London.
@@IntScout3 You are correct, sir!
Nope, your encounter with Jimi in New Orleans was in 1968...no Fat Mattress yet formed. AXIS was recorded at Olympic Studios, in London, 1967. It's been a long time ago, so I forgive you for your timeline mistakes!
Why did you stop at this story? Is there anymore?
That's crazy
cool al thanks for sharing love an light
NO PUN INTENDED. WHAT A GREAT EXPERIENCE!
Fucking amazing. Great stories.
Dude - from here on in set up the camera on a TRIPOD , don't move it, and try not to interrupt and say stuff that doesn't add anything. This guy is a treasure trove and obviously feels a calling for storytelling. Do him and us some justice while he is still with us.
awsome story of a great man. thanks for sharing
We know Bill Graham ! We were around at the time!!!
''You're fired! Kid, do you want another job?'' ah the old days.
Cool story bro
Dead's wall of sound wasn't built until 1974 but a cool story. the weird get professional ! haha awesome
early 1973 the WOS was being used.
built by Owsley Stanley, the guy who distributed the first mass dosages of LSD to the Bay Area music community, in 1966. He was some kind of genius, but wound up doing time in prison, and eventually migrated to Australia, where he had a thriving business making cool, expensive jewelry. He died at age 74, in a one-car accident. His nickname was "The Bear"...why, I do not know, as he was not a huge guy.
Must be nice to have a MUSE John B!!!🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
hes say 67 the summer of love did no one else here that?😂
I did not hear that...and people, after nearly 60 years, have confused memories!
How does one become an electrician at 14?
Likely was mentored by a relative at an early age...He may have been competent, but was not a Union-approved Electrician...that achievement takes a long apprentice-ship! But it is a lucrative skill!...My uncle retired as a low-ball millionaire, after 40 years, investing his money wisely.
Why is he called "Owl Bob"..?
This man made the electricity for Jimi Hendrix's machine gun

I didnt know they served alcohol at IHOP.
......... they have "hops" in their name after all........ so you shouldn't be surprised (one of the ingredients of some beer is hops)........
Oh OK I get it! He said he is a Griot!
"The main job of the griot was to entertain the villagers with mythical stories... "
......and so Screech Owl Bob's Jimi story is strictly for entertainment!

I once knew someone who heard of another guy that was neighbors with someone who knew someone else that heard about some guy that had a sister that went out with a guy that his father knew someone that went to a Hendrix concert. Does that make me famous?
We get it!
