      In a setting with real deities, who grant their followers amazing healing powers. There are no characters with wheelchairs. Characters that show that much direct defiance to them and their powers is a challenge that these powers will not allow. The situation would be as follows.
      Wheelie- My character needs the fighter and ranger to carry me down the first flight of stairs.
      Cleric- I lay my hands on you and heal your body. Now get up and walk down the stairs.
      Wheelie- Im not accepting the healing. I want my wheelchair.
      Deity- Smite
      Cleric- What did we have the cripple along for?
      Fighter- We were bullied into it.

      The 1st wheelchair was invented in 1595 for King Philip II of Spain.
      It was done so he could move around with his severe gout present in his legs from a near entire diet of meat.
      Sorry to tell you & most people that the disabled were not treated well in the past with the exception of the highest nobility that could pay for any new fangled thing they pleased.
      Rich political, media & social elite/celebrities are frankly still terrible making the nobility of the past look good by comparison.
      Anyone with a basic knowledge of the high middle ages & prior know how ridiculous any consideration for disability is high fantasy.
      Their was no allocation in any nation of the world till 17th century 'grand hospital' & the special education via various academies or church's in the 18th century.
      If you are deaf, blind or crippled outside of the Anglosphere or select post ww2 western continental European nations even today you will likely not receive any education or education.
      Go out side the western & those with disabilities are still treated worse then animals.
      I was mute till 7 & many thought me dim which I wasn't referring to me as a animal when these foreign imports thought no one was present but I hurt them even as a child for I was not
      Normal as my father quote: ''you were akin a shaved ch!mp as a nipper my son, as you terrified everyone even your mother followed by his usual laughter''.
      Go out side of the Uk for even in the USA & Canada they would have be practising eugenics as they were before Axis nation put a damper on that position.
      Technically speaking I walk with a cane/stick now so am disabled which no one really gives a fvck about me as I have had multiple youth attempt to attack me even one with a machete.
      Funny how they were let of the hook for being of differing ethnicity.
      It is animal instinct to exterminate that with an affliction or disability for genetic reinforcement & preventing illness or weakness in the group to exterminate that weakness.
      Most people have not gone beyond their momentary passion being worse then a beast for an beast has an excuse but people have none.
      Passion before mind is the norm even today more so then the mid 20th century ironically in the west.
      In many nations with your weight that is the USA average you would be considered disabled in many nations.
      If I was not as physically capable & familiar with combat as I trained by my elders I would not have likely lived to majority.
      My grand father Jim gave me the best advise early at about 5 ''your life will be hard, your choices few & everyone will think you beneath them lad! so fvck em.''
      I made myself greater then most even now & bloodied anyone till curled up husk on the ground that thought they were my better.
      I am callous & my mother describes me as ''cut throat'' which I am not as I just learnt how vile most people are young which don't deserve kindness for they do not possess kindness!
      Your views of the present much less the past are innocently oblivious at best like most all governments & corporations with pleasant words of flimflam but are empty false piety.
      I'd rather most people do fvck all for others then pretend to care or feel compassion.
      Alphabet people & sheep in the ground with virtue signalling to replace false piety that was more bearable are both distasteful leaving rancid taste to me.
      It easy to pretend to care but few put any effort in.
      People today want to be praised for nothing the vile sacks of tomtit!
      Food for thought!

    The general banning of anything in a roleplaying game is an impossibility. If I want demons drowning puppies in my campaign, you can't ban that as, I have them in my game. Just because they remove them from the game (puppies, of course, they would never remove demons) does not mean they are banned from the game. It just means they are removed from the rules. Since the rules are merely suggestions, there is no banning. Of course, this is all BS anyways.

      It was a bloody apocalyptic war.... but not all of the dragons are genuinely dead. Some are merely sealed away hidden in places where they would hopefully never return. But then we find out that... well.. actually.... there's a dragon cult run by a dark elf vampire.
      Said vampire tricks a greedy wizard into inadvertently freeing the dragon queen, hilarity ensues.... maybe... depends on what you think is hilarious.
      The twist though... is that the general public has NO idea why the dragon war started. Or just how monumentous the return will actually be.

      I mean it could be used as an interesting setup.... Like just because the dungeon was set up to be wheelchair accessible when it was NEW doesn't necessarily mean those features are still in good shape or working properly.... Imagine finding out that the elevator is not only out, but was the only way in for wheelchair users... Then finding a guy that died trying to crawl up the stairs because there was something bad down there and his party left him behind.... His wheelchair tipped over at the base of the stairs...
      I mean if I'm going to include the concept of wheelchair using adventurers I'm gonna make it clear that their plot armor is no more potent than any other member of the party and bad things can happen to them if they don't work together to overcome whatever problems their differences in mobility are. (Same issue that people have with wheelchairs is basically the same issue they have with flying characters... Differing levels of movement ability can be bad for party cohesion as it increases the likelihood of the party splitting up. In the case of wheelchairs, the stairs are a cliff and everyone not in a wheelchair can functionally fly allowing them to traverse the obstacle faster.)

      @@commandercaptain4664 It was essentially how you leveled up. So now a days you might compare it to how some DMs require you to train with an expert for a few days to gain your level up bonuses.
      Some groups would RP it. Some groups would just declare it accomplished. The really fun DMs would do things like roll to see if you got into trouble.
      So maybe you are playing a fighter, and you roll into town loaded with money ready to do a pub crawl with your adventuring party. You start guzzling wine and hitting on the bar maids, but maybe you roll really low on your charisma check and get banned from that pub for a week.
      So your character goes to an inn and flirts with the Inn keepers kid, only to get kicked out of the Inn. Now your out in the street, drunk, and get harrassed by the town guard. So you punch one of them out and end up spending the night in the drunk tank.
      A few days later your party finds you waiting for them to pay your bail with the local sheriff confiscating 10% of your gold to "pay the aggrieved parties".
      All in all it was an excuse to get into shenanigans, so long as you spent all your money you would get your level up. There are some harder rules on it (Gygax LOVED his charts :).
      But it was more about, what does an adventurer do when they aren't adventuring? After all, once a character has 200 gold, they don't need to work for at least a year. So imagine having 20,000 GP. Why would your character ever bother adventuring? Well the answer was, they spent all their money!

    • @ImminDragon
      @ImminDragon 5 місяців тому +26

      There's magic to fix any damage, there are magic items that replace missing limbs (common item at that), the artificer can make their armor function like an ironman suit and replace the functionality... They actually made it so a person could play a character with non-functioning limbs and still play a viable character.
      What should combat against a person stuck in a chair look like? Enemy one uses the shove action to knock them over. Enemies two through five then have advantage. Players turn? They use their action to get their chair upright and climb into it. Enemy one then uses shove...
      What should challenges look like? You get to the lich's tower. It's a hundred feet tall with a spiral staircase to his room at the top. After spending five hours getting your wheelchair up there, just before you leave the staircase, he casts grease.
      What about basic adventuring? As you roll your way across the field, you notice the ground is getting a bit softer. You realize that there is a creak cutting through the field. It's roughly fifteen feet wide and five feet deep. If you try to force your way across, you may get stuck in the thick muddy soil and drown. Do you want to risk it or spend what is likely to be multiple days finding a place you can safely cross?
      It would probably be more fun, as a DM, to come up with simple but incredibly annoying ways of screwing that player over than it would be to find ways to justify them getting dang near anywhere.

    • @minnion2871
      @minnion2871 5 місяців тому +6

      @@ImminDragon Presumably a wheelchair bound adventurer would be used to fighting from a sitting position.... I'd say they should probably forget about the wheelchair and take stock of their surroundings for anything they can sit on.... and possibly take some feats to boost their move speed, I'd presume their crawl speed should still be half of what their walk speed would be if they could walk... so ten to 15, perhaps 20 if something like a monk or barbarian... If they get a climb speed from a feat or class feature they should presumably be able to use that in any situation in which they can say they are climbing... where there is a wall there is a way, and fun fact, most stairs are adjacent to at least one wall... (And if a caster would they be able to cast while prone? that's probably a good question to consider)
      But yeah I guess I just figure that players of disabled characters should take stock of what their character should be able to do when not in their chair, and consider how class features and skills factor into their mobility... Because if you can build an iron man suit of animated armor you won't need the wheelchair. If you can convince the artificer PC or NPC to build you a suit of iron man armor if you're not that class you should also be good to go, at least so long as you avoid the gaze of a beholder....

      To paraphrase your point, the issue with hitting things with swords is that magic can just kill things easily from a distance, why would anyone ever use a sword?
      The reason hitting things with swords is in the game is because it's fun and some people want to play that way. Some people want to play characters in wheelchairs because they relate to that and can have fun doing it. It ain't your job to rain on their parade or tell them how they can play their game, get over yourself. Quite why you think you get to be the police here I don't know.
      Characters in D&D do "suboptimal" things all the time, because it makes for an interesting character, or an interesting story. People sometimes take the harder path BECAUSE it's harder.
      (PS Before you start saying "but hitting things with swords is better than magic in some situations", just shut the eff up, the GAME MECHANICS are designed to (sorta) balance melee and magic, this is an entirely artificial construct to ENABLE people play both, arguing the other direction is putting the cart before the horse. The mechanics solely exist to allow people to play the game they want to play. If that means wheelchairs then that means wheelchairs.)

    To be fair, THAC0 did have a very twisted logic to it: they did AC backwards. Basically, your class and level set the target number, and the enemy AC was applied as a modifier to your roll (that is, an AC of +1 to +10 was a bonus, an AC of -1 to -10 was a penalty to your roll to try and hit your class/level target number). Thank Boccob someone realized doing it the proper way with the AC as the target and the class attack bonus as the modifier made more sense and fixed it.

    Okay. About the Wheelchairs in D&D thing. I can explain this to you.
    The issue with wheelchairs is not them by themselves. They make perfect sense in the same way they are applied today. As a cheep way to make people who can't move to move around.
    The issue with them is when they are starting to become part of the character, and said character travel around a dungeon and adventure with a wheelchair.
    This is extremely impractical for obvious reasons. If you explore Strahds castle and you have 120ft of stairs to walk up, you are not getting a ramp to move that wheelchair up. Not being able to move around is in fact so impracticable that there is no reason for someone who requires a wheelchair to even become an adventurer in the first place. So what people have done to "resolve" this fact is to invent stuff like magical wheelchairs so they have no reason to prevent anyone from doing anything an adventurer is required to do.
    The issue with this is that is done only to treat a disability as an aesthetic choice. These people do not care about the fantasy. They care more about the political narrative such as "inclusion" rather than focus on what is normal for that fantasy world. This is in fact pretty insulting to many people who have disabilities. I know of no one who has a disability and do not want to get rid of it if the possibility existed.
    Remember that D&D is a world where magic is prevalent. It is everywhere. Your basic thug is level 3, a common priest is level 5 and a knight is level 8. Your unskilled laborers earn 104gp a year, and a carpenter earns 1040gp a year. Resurrecting someone who has died, cost around 500gp and getting a prosthetic limb cost 100gp. If you do not have a way to resolve a broken or damaged limb by the end of the early game, your DM is not playing in the setting the book is written in. Even if your damage is something like nerve damage, lesser restoration (that every single priest/cleric knows as they are level 5) will resolve that. If your disability is due to a curse, you have remove curse or dispel magic by the same level. A common cleric can handle that just fine.
    If you choose to buy a magic wheelchair over all other possibilities that are cheaper. You are doing that buy choice. You make the choice to be disabled rather than not being. A normal wheelchair make sense, but a magical one that can climb stairs does not.
    It has absolutely nothing to do about being against wheelchairs. What it is about is that outside virtue signaling and logic from the real world is infecting a fantasy setting where it does not belong.

    • @DVAcme
      @DVAcme 5 місяців тому

      If you can invent a magical wheelchair, you can also create a magical set of leg braces that allow you to use your legs as normal. Or magic prosthetic legs. Or magically heal the fucking legs. Basically, THERE IS NO FUCKING REASON AN ADVENTURER SHOULD EVER BE IN A FUCKING WHEELCHAIR.

    • @AussieGriffin
      @AussieGriffin 5 місяців тому

      Allright, it's been a while since I explained a down-vote. -.-
      The definition of disability is broad, including sensory (sight, hearing, touch taste smell), physical (losing your hand in a fight) and congenital (not having something to begin with)
      Let a professional advocate illustrate a few things, icluding people's prefered solutions to disability:
      ua-cam.com/video/-zkZsk_pT5k/v-deo.html
      Some people switch off their hearing aids to enjoy the quiet.
      ua-cam.com/users/shorts4ZNcgmgyzJo.
      It's easier to find footage of mechanical limbs than the carbondioxide cylinder-powered limbs because the latter were so diaappointing:
      ua-cam.com/video/ihh9EluajBY/v-deo.html
      Greater Restoration can be looked up (thanks Roll20 ^,^) and you'll see that it's geared to restore conditions inflicted on people during their adventures. Degenerative conditions, missing / malfunctioning body parts you were born with, neuro-diversity? Not covered.
      If you read the web comic The Gods of ArrKelaan, you'll see there's a story about a group of adventurers that take their dead friend to several temples for ressurection. This is due to their case for bringing him back not meeting the plans, business interests or whims of the gods. This is absolutely in keeping with the slew of DnD deitys that are either not powerful enough to heal you on the spot, need help to pull off a miracle, or will get annoyed if you so much as have lunch with a follower of another faith, or opposed gods from the same pantheon.
      Wtih that in mind suddenly pacts with otherworldly beings, striving to bring converts or treasure to a god or a temple or retrieving dangerous artifacts for a wizard seem like viable paths to full physical accessibility. Yet if a well-meaning atificer offers you a low-risk alternative that can climb stairs and get you around a LOT faster?
      A.G.

      The math is exactly the same, or have you not noticed the trick?
      AC10 is just Thac0 in disguise...
      But if you want to do this, lets:
      My issue with Thac0 comes from a game design perspective, and not the rule itself.
      First, let is acknowledge Thac0 has different ways to be calculated based on class. It wasn't as easy as using your level and a bit of math... you had to know your progression track. If you where not really well versed in this progression track? Then you had to break out a chart and look that up... and heaven forbid you have bad memories. While some out there might crow proud about this gate-keeping measure, those casuals needing charts... if newer players can't grok your rule set without constantly looking up facts in books... you failed.
      Second, notice that subtraction within the math itself. While it might not seem very big, it is something to be avoided within most systems. Unless you design said system to use all subtraction, and why would you do that you monster, you have unnecessary complications within your game. Slowing it down as players have to switch back and forth between adding and subtracting. As for being a monster - brains like when numbers go up, work with it and not against it.
      Third, Thac0 didn't deal with stacked numbers very well. It was entirely possible to get characters with AC's of -1, -2, or even -10 on them. While negative numbers might not seem that problematic in a math class... this is a gaming system we are discussing. Having numbers like that just forces the people to snap further out of immersion to deal with added complexity.
      I don't have many memories of using Thac0, but it stood out as... the odd rule... for a reason. Our current AC10 system is superior because it addresses these game play issues and makes the math fit our expectations. It is the reason why you have to add 10 to your AC, after all....

  • @chakravant
    @chakravant 5 місяців тому +2

    So, jokes aside, THAC0 is not the same thing as hit tables. It is, like ability tests, actually a homebrew / fan thing (and the whole acronym was a joke), and it was made official only in one only edition of the game, namely AD&D 2nd edition, you know, the one when they wanted to create more modern version of D&D and they failed. And it was, well, a hit table reduced to one number, because these big complicated hit tables were pretty linear and somewhat pointless. So the creators got more space for pretty full-colour illustrations which are apparently more important in rulebook than actual rules.
    Also, if you think "the complicated math" is subtraction (instead of addition which is, well, everywhere in D&D), I guess I must suggest you to create a character for HERO system, where they have square roots. Dunno why, the theory is whenever you try to create "balanced" and "fair" game mechanics, sooner or later you'll get square roots and the system still will be sh*t. So, let's see what actually next D&D edition will have...

    • @commandercaptain4664
      @commandercaptain4664 5 місяців тому

      THAC0 was ported to BECMI, that’s how I learned about it. Also, Hero System allows a GM to create anything to a micrometric degree and have it all make sense, whereas D&D is a pure guessing game to achieve any semblance of balance. The square roots are only for those who want to go full Minecraft with it. Now GURPS Vehicles on the other hand… I hope you like calculus with your calculus, cuz that’s the default for that book.

    • @chakravant
      @chakravant 5 місяців тому

      @@commandercaptain4664 interesting, I've never seen becmi books, in cyclopaedia there's all about hit tables, the thac0 is mentioned only in one place to make sense of published adventures (AD&D adventures I guess).
      As for HERO and GURPS, that's what I'm joking about. There is a lot of dividing, multiplying and such (in GURPS you also have all that skill defaulting sh*t which doesn't make things easier) and a lot of calculations that were seemingly about balancing the game but makes system borderline unusable. We can discuss that for a long time, but my take is, that is not what RPG system should do. There were a lot of convoluted systems of '80s and '90s and I played many of them, none was especially fun and it worked mostly because we were that particular type of old school gamers who use any rules or rolls sparingly, mostly when there are no other way to solve the scene...

    • @commandercaptain4664
      @commandercaptain4664 5 місяців тому

      @chakravant I’ve only read Hero 5E, aka The Bullet Stopper, and as involved as it was regarding world building, the square roots and fractals never interfered or were ever in use with actual gameplay.
      That’s even truer about GURPS, whose basic ruleset was playable with a free 32 page Lite version (or 4 pages for the pamphlet sized Ultra Lite version). Fractions were sparingly involved regarding ranged combat and other rarer miscellany, but they could easily be circumvented with alternate rules, as opposed to AD&D 1-2E, which utilized a multitude of resolution mechanics vastly unrelated to each other (roll low ability checks vs roll high attack rolls against lower and better ACs vs Save against Wands Staves and Rods vs different XPs for leveling certain classes over others… etc etc). GURPS only had a couple standard resolutions for everything and a frightening amount of options upon options for customizing a group’s preferences.
      It’s only when designing a GURPS vessel wholesale using the Vehicles supplement that required a full MENSA committee to even glance at that morass. I mainly grabbed that book out of equal curiosity and astonishment about how that designer thought any of that book could apply to such a simple system as GURPS. It was truly an an anomaly to behold and I’d never used it, for fear that my brain hole would go full Ark of the Covenant while reading a restaurant menu.

    Fighting from a seated position (especially when your legs dont work) is insanely difficult. Your movement is very restricted, and you lose so much leverage.
    Another reason wheelchairs annoy me in D&D is because magic to fix such disibilities can very easily be found in any large city - almost making being disabled a choice more than anything.
