The entire ending where everything seems "back to normal" is a dream. You can tell by the over exposure of light and the outer "haze" in the screen.
Wes Craven was inspired by to make the movie by a real-life event of a Cambodian family that moved to the US (LA). The youngest boy had the feeling like something from their homeland was "after him" and was having horrible nightmares. Ho got to the point that he was afraid to go to sleep because the thing that was chasing him might actually catch him and "get him". After a while, his parents thought that things had settled down and the boy finally started sleeping again. Then one night the boy started screaming during the middle of the night, but by the time his parents had gotten to him, he was dead with his eyes wide open in fear. That was the inspiration for Wes to write the story....

@@paulcurran4786 Wes Craven has told the story numerous times, so he may be relating the story as he knew it...and maybe the Cambodian family had some sort of belief system that played into the boy's fears. I'd say it's become an urban legend thanks to this movie and Wes's story.
I'm not sure there's really a concrete explanation for the last scene. I will say it wasn't Wes Craven's idea for how to finish it - he didn't like that ending, it was studio mandated.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) and Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994) are worth catching. That's the trilogy within the franchise for me. Wes Craven wasn't involved with any of the other sequels. They also have the same star.
the producer and friend of Wes Robert Shaye wanted an ending that would indicate a sequel, Wes had no intentions on a sequel so they compromised and put three ideal endings together. The car, the mom through the window, and the jump rope girls and shut down production with five minutes to spare.
Fun fact: The doctor at the sleep clinic was also the voice of Roger in Who Framed Roger Rabbit!

Fun Fact: One of the main reasons Johnny Depp was chosen was because Wes Craven's daughter thought he was "dreamy" and that was why this is the feature film debut of Johnny Depp.
Location Location Fact: All of the boiler room footage in the film was shot in the basement of the Lincoln Heights Jail in Los Angeles, which was condemned shortly after production wrapped, due to high levels of asbestos.
Hot Take Fact: The scene where Freddy is set on fire, chases Nancy to the top of the stairs, falls back down, and starts back up again, was all shot in one take, with several cameras, and was the most elaborate fire scene ever filmed up to that time. Stuntman Anthony Cecere won best stunt of the year for the scene.
Blade Enthusiast Fact: The idea behind the glove was a practical one on Wes Craven's part, as he wanted to give the character a unique weapon, but also something that could be made cheaply and wouldn't be difficult to use or transport. At the time he was studying primal fears embedded in the subconscious of people of all cultures, and discovered that one of those fears is attack by animal claws. Around the same time, he saw his cat unsheathe its claws, and the two concepts merged, although in the original script the blades were fishing knives, not steak knives, as in the finished film.
Nancy’s hair goes white from intense fear. That can actually happen in real life and it used to be a frequent shorthand in movies and TV to show that someone experienced extreme trauma.
In the film Constantine, a civillian in the opening scene had his hair turned white upon seeing the demon. In Evil Dead 2, Ash's hair also turned gray when he sees Kandarian demon for the first time.
A friend of mine had this effect with her hair turning white.. but it wasn't because of fear but stress...

Yeah, guys invented crop tops (or "half shirts" as we called them at the time) as a way to (partially) get around the "No shirt, no shoes, no service" policy implemented in the 70s (in the U.S.) by gyms and other public spaces.
Very few American homes actually have trellises to climb up but they used to be very useful devices for filmmakers. 😂
Man, this is such a fun movie. Nice catch noticing the similarities to Stranger Things. The creators definitely took inspiration from this movie for the latest season. They even got Robert Englund, the actor who plays Freddy Krueger in this movie, to play Victor Creel on the show. 🎃
Yeah, given that Stranger Things takes place in the 80s, it draws on a lot of 80s pop culture, including NOES.
20:12 wee defense for Glen: it's definitely frustrating that he keeps dropping the ball but we get hints that he has also been having nightmares and not sleeping well. He is trying to stay awake by playing loud music and watching tv. Keep in mind, it must have been several days since tina's first dream (which they all had) and then there's been Rod's funeral; that's like a week at least they both have been not sleeping. The only difference is Glen keeps on trying to deny it's really happening. But he's even told us essentially, that's how he's trying to fight off Freddy Kruger, turning his back on him and taking away his energy.
I find the approach of the boys to their nightmares very interesting. They mask it with denial, rationalizing, sex jokes, and bravado, and in many ways it makes them more vulnerable. Nancy also repeatedly expects Glen, as a man, to defend, guard, or fight for her and he doesn't wear that well. He tries to be macho logic man for Nancy but he's actually just a very scared kid. Either way he's set up to fail Nancy, either by not being manly enough(admitting he's scared and can't fight off Kruger) or being too manly(denying there's anything to be scared of and letting himself sleep). Toxic mascuinity, yadda yadda.
I never really thought about it from that angle. Been watching this movie for decades and still learning new perspectives. Thanks, friend

I've never thought about Glen in that way, even though I've mentally defended Rod during several reaction viewings (reactors usually think Rod is a jerk, but I think under the swagger and gross sex jokes he obviously cares for Tina and wants to open up to her- as shown by his vulnerable moment in admitting he was also having the nightmares. He really just behaves like a typical teenage boy who's overcompensating because he has emotions he doesn't understand and hasn't been equipped to handle). I love that I'm still learning insights into movies I grew up with. Thank you for that thoughtful comment!
Just so you know, the ending "twist" was forced by the producer onto Wes Craven. The original ending was the same that you see in the film, except they just drive off normally (no screaming, no "Fredddy car") and the mother doesn't get pulled away by Freddy, but you still have that hazy dreamy look. And yes, this was Johnny Depp's very first role in anything. He was accompaying his friend Jackie Earle Haley for the audition (who ended up playing Freddy in the remake).
Fun fact: Wes Craven got the inspiration for this movie from a real life story about a bunch of kids suffering the same thing they were all dying in their sleep from having extreme nightmares and the inspiration for Freddy Kruger came from 3 things 1. a bully from his school during his youth, 2. a disfigured homeless man who had frightened him when he was 12, and 3. the song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright.
Today, Freddie is on of the most iconic horror charakters besides Michel Myers or Jason
You can watch part 2 cus it is a lot of fun, but part 3 is a direct sequel to this one, and I HIGHLY recommend it. The original script was written by the writer/director of this one, Wes Craven, and was revised by Chuck Russell and Frank (Shawshank Redemption) Darabont.
LIN SHAYE! I had totally forgotten she was in this! I've met her. She's a really nice lady on top of being a damn good actress.
She totally stole the show in There's Something About Mary! I absolutely love her, she adds so much to everything she's in. Great to hear that she's also a nice lady. :)

This is my favorite horror film of all time, and Wes Craven is as such a force with creativity in horror filmmaking. If you’re interested check out the making of this which breaks down the practical effect. Although he didn’t direct them, 2 & 3 are worth checking out. Glad you liked this.

There are so many things to talk about this movie…..
Robert Englund (aka Krueger) did not initially want to play the character, but he gave in, and eventually loved it. The scene where Johnny Depp’s character dies was REALLY troublesome, because they were spinning the room they built to give effect, but the thing broke, began spinning out of control, and a bunch of cameras were destroyed and all; that’s why the blood has that effect when the mom walks in. The bathtub scene when Nancy dreams and drowns was done in a built tank, and she had to be in there for hours and hours straight to shoot. The teacher, after Tina dies and her boyfriend is arrested, is the sister of the owner of the studio (New Line Cinema) that created the film.
Not to mention, the idea behind a nightmare/dream being the cause of people’s death, and it’s unavoidable makes things SO creepy. Like, it’s the best idea….. Wes Craven, who created and directed the film, got the idea from Filipino immigrants who would die in their sleep, probably due to stress, or trauma, or something like that….. this movie is HORROR GOLD!!!

This introduced us all to none other than Johnny Depp ... after this, he would get his breakout TV role on the Fox drama "21 Jump Street," where he was part of cops going that among other things, went undercover as students in high school. He would leave after season 4 and the rest ... is history!
I still love 21 Jump Street. What an awesome cast. I wish we saw more of Peter Deluise and Dustin Nguyen.
Ah, but Johnny Depp has long since disassociated himself from 21 Jump Street (only referring to it as "that show"), but doesn't shy away from his involvement in the NOES franchise (e.g., he had a cameo in "Freddy's Dead").
Johnny had a few other film roles before 21 Jump Street.
@@ericjette2435 he did come back for the reboot for a cheeky moment which I won't spoil for those that didn't see the movie yet but yeah, he never was really happy on Jump Street. He didn't really want to be an actor back then and grudgingly went along with it because it was good money. Also again your right, he did come back for a cameo in Freddy's Dead. Wes said he wanted to ask Johnny to cameo in New Nightmare but was too nervous to approach him about it because by that time Johnny had become a bigtime draw. Johnny later stated he would have happily done a cameo in New Nightmare.

Fun Fact: 19:10 - 19:38 There's an extended scene of this scene where it's revealed that Nancy, Glenn, Tina, and Rod all had a sibling that Freddy had killed.
Nancy is one of my favorite heroines of this movie franchise.

Nancy is so badass in this and her hidden secondary coffee machine is so funny to me for some reason :D I originally saw this when I was maybe a bit too young and hooo boy that Depp death scene was in my head for a while, it was the first time I remember seeing such an absurd amount of blood.

I love your spooky season videos! Just started the video but can’t wait for your take on the sfx, acting, atmosphere, and character development! Your takes are always so insightful and unique! You’ll notice a common theme in 1980’s teen slasher flicks, the parents are usually irrelevant, absent or dumb and the lead is usually a female.
That was one thing I loved about Stranger Things other than the nostalgia, they made the kids, teens and adults smart! Oh and they named a character Nancy!😂, I immediately thought of this movie which was my childhood favorite. Great reaction 👏🏻
I heard or read something somewhere that NOES is about how parents don't listen to their kids, but they should. As someone who grew up in the 70s and 80s, I relate strongly to that.

But that's the point - they were so sleep deprived they couldn't stay awake any more; that's why they kept nodding off.

I saw this in the theater on opening night at a midnight show with a bunch of friends in high school. I was 18. I dont think i slept for a week after this movie, lol.
Glad you liked the movie, the 1, the 3 and the 7 are the best, the 3rd has the best kids, the 7 has a whole meta subtext that announces what craven will do with Scream, the 2nd one is only noticeable for its gay subtext, which was pretty rare in the 80's. Hope you'll enjoy them
For the first time since I was 16-17 years old, I decided to see at least a reaction to this classic horror movie. I couldn't sleep for a week and never watched it again. Even now it's creepy, after many years... Johnny started his career with this movie. It is very symbolic, given the characters of his characters))
Yes the actors were young, but they were in their 20s, no financial risk 😂
what you need to realize about A Nightmare on Elm Street so that it actually makes sense is that the entire film is Wes Cravens (the creator and director) nightmare not Tina's or Nancy's dreams and this is what Nancy actually realizes in her mothers room at the end... all the characters are part of Wes's Dream
This was Johnny depps first movie after this, then through out the 80s he was in the tv show 21 jump street and couldnt be in any other projects becuase of the contract or whatever he didnt know that till after signing it till think 5 seasons in 21 jumpstreet or Well till the 90s he got out, and didnt want to be in tv show just movies to do movies but was just stuck. Theres a lot more to the story thats just what i rember

I remember at high school football games (American) people would be wearing Freddy Krueger stuff. Plus this is an amazing movie, the rest ....fun but cheezie. Top ten on my horror list, but I'm not a horror fan.

12:40 It's not a question of financial risk. _A Nightmare on Elm Street_ cost just over one million dollars to make. Compare that to the big films of the same year, like _Ghostbusters_ ($25 million), _Beverly Hills Cop_ ($13 million) or _Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom_ ($28 million) and it's clear that _Nightmare_ was a pretty low budget effort. So the issue is that, outside of horror, American studios don't really make many lower budget movies anymore.
That’s exactly what I said 😭 they don’t take risks on new actors much anymore TODAY because of the high budget films today. They can’t make that kind of financial risk now.

Freddy can only attack you not in your sleep, but your dreams. As stupid as it sounds, just don't dream and your safe.
It's even a plot point in later sequels where there is a drug that prevents dreaming. But there are actually nature drugs now that do stop dreams. Alcohol for examples stops REM sleep and thus, you'd be fine. Pot too stops dreaming and people who use it heavily but than quit say they experience the most vivid and unsettling dreams they ever had.
So well you can't stay awake forever, you can beat Freddy but not dreaming. It's a shame the films never tried to explore these facts

At some point watch the 1974 Black Christmas; it is a cult classic. Do get the original 1974 and not the remake; the original stars Olivia Hussey who was Juliet in 1968 classic and best, Romeo and Juliet. It really makes you think. Hey, you are making it through these and so as I said with my Halloween comment, I watch them through you and that is enough to satisfy my curiosity. Good job.👍👍

@@85michelle7 Yes, Wes Craven showed pictures to his daughter (or daughters? I can't remember) and she/they likes Johnny Depp. Wes was a bit surprised because one of the main things that he remembered about Johnny was that he had nicotine stains on his fingers. (He's been a chain smoker since age 12. It's amazing he's aged as well as he has and--as far as I know--has not yet developed heart and/or lung disease.)
The ending is simple. She never actually woke up and pulled Freddy into reality. Her beating Freddy was all a dream.
