Hiroyuki must have a contract that says every samurai film requires him hahaha.
I will watch every one. I hope he is paid for that fact
@@trying3841 I hope he is getting minimum wage and not a penny more

He sells.
Hes for me the perfect Mifune of this era!! i Fing love his Swordmanship.
From the last samurai to shogun, Hiroyuki Sanada is a legend
Don't forget Sankuokai !!! (on TV at the end of the seventies. All started from there)
You know Mr. Hiroyuki is the REAL last samurai in this world
I think the Last Samurai was a bootleg version of the book Shogun, from when I watched it.
John Wick 4 too
And 47 Ronin
Shõgun was one of my father's favourite books, he read it so many times it was litereally falling apart. I remember when the TV series was showing he was working afternoon shift so I had to sit there and record it for him on the VHS. One funny moment was when I forgot to pause it during a commercial, however it was a commercial for Singapore airlines or something, and the first part of the ad showed a colourful little boat with red sails against a sunset. It fit so well and looked like part of the series he never noticed.
Years later the series came out on DVD and he sat through it yet again for the umpteenth time; he's been gone for 16 years so now it's part of my own movie collection.
This new version does look good, hopefully it's as good as the trailer.
My father watched this religiously back then
@@brooklynboiprod me too along with Miami Vice. the 80's was ...simply awesome !
The trailer is an overt promotion of healthy heterosexual relationships lol
And there's not a single Negros among the samurai! In today's mainstream, that's an unacceptable luxury. It's a scandal, I'm not afraid of the word!
I read the book when I was 15. Saw the movie afterwards. This DOES NOT LOOK GOOD. This looks like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meets Tom Cruise horrendous samurai BS. It looks like a f***ing joke. But I guess that samurai are back on mainstream with Sekiro, Nioh, AC Codename Red and Rise of the Ronin, not to mention animes and whatnot, so why not a historically inaccurate drama with flashy comic battles, right?
@@metodoinstinto Well speaking for myself, I loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Last Samurai, House Of Flying Daggers, Curse Of The Golden Flower and Red Cliff.
Sure, CT-HD and HoFD have a touch of the fantasy about them, but I didn't mind that, so sounds as if I'll like this new version of Shõgun. I guess they're not for everyone.
Every frame was visual eye candy. Everything was shot so well.
YES! A period drama not focused in the West!
Meh. The trailer is mid, tbh

In 1998, my grandpa, who was a big fan of Samurai movies, showed me some VHS recordings of the 1980 series. Whenever he would watch me for an evening, we would watch it, and some other classic samurai movies. When the Tom Cruise movie, The Last Samurai came out, he was happy that there was a Samurai movie I could grow up with. He passed in 2005, I wish he was here to watch this, he would have loved it.
The Last Samurai is one of my all time favorite movies that is tied with Kingdom of Heaven.
He'll be enjoying it right beside ya bro 👋😇
@NinjaJerky thats one of my favorite movies too... and this looks exactly like that, but in the version of a show... I'm excited for this
I would say that the Last Samurai is based on a lot of Clavell's masterpiece. Which is why it was a great movie.
@NinjaJerky I absolutely agree. 100%, 1000% bro fist
The moment I saw Hiroyuki Sanada, I bowed my head in respect. A must-watch.

@likashaid7913 Agreed! Can’t wait to take it all in✨
Not only that, they speak an old form of Japanese from that time that modern Japanese people don't use anymore.

"The ultimate rank a mortal can achieve.......SHOGUN."
Now that's a more fitting title to a timeless story.
Which means a barbaric terrorist.
Finally, we'll see the true nature of the japanese "civilization"
This show is really good. It has been a long time since I've felt that way about any show. I watched episodes 1 and 2 tonight 3 times each.
Lol why 3 times. Nice though
Hiroyuki Sanada litterally embodies the samurai spirit. He's excellent in every role of that nature.
James Clavell's novel is brilliant, what a great read! Richard Chamberlain, Tishiro Mifune and Yoko Shimada's performances in the 1st series are outstanding. Can't wait to see this version!!
Toshiro Mifune is a legend. So much pressure on Sanada to at least make it comparable
He will make it. He is almost as legend as Toshiro
You know 80% of the people that watch this will think it is a rip off of some Manga they've read. lol.
I've been playing Ghost of Tsushima for the first time and loving it, so another Samurai thing seems cool now that I'm really into that era haha😂
My favorite out of the Asia Novels. And yes, Toshiro will be tough shoes to fill, But Hiroyuki will do just fine. The one that I am worried about is Frankie Sakai who played Yabu. What a performance that was! Hopefully they won't stray too far from the Novel.
I lived in Japan as a young man. I loved it.
Shogun is an amazing book. The way it captivates the reader and draws attention to Japanese culture and the stark differences between it and western culture at the time was done with respect with respect. I hope, if this series is based on the book, all the writers are fans and attempt to honor the book properly by conveying it accurately.
@@OmoshiroiWagunura-op9fy yeah, the endowment fascination can get old, but it is a real thing. If it exists today (it does, from personal and anecdotal experience, one of the first 10 questions I'm asked is about my endowment. The response from the men is, "yeah, that's amazing, but ours are very hard". The response from women varies), it certainly existed back then. It may be annoying that it appears as often in the book just as it comes up often in real life, but it's real.
More to the point of respect (with admission that I may be viewing the book through rose tinted glasses as it's been years since I read it), Blacthorne goes on at length, repeatedly, about the organization, cleanliness, and hidden social tactics of the culture. He falls in love with the people and takes on their hearts. It may not sound like respect to some but it does to me. None of that, true or false, would call for a modern revision to satiate the appetites of imaginary modern audiences though, which is the thing I hope doesn't happen.
I purchased another copy and will reread (it's been years) to remember what does and doesn't happen, then I'll consider giving the show a go.
There is almost nothing about Japanese culture or European culture in either the old series or this one.
Almost the entire series pompously tells about the political structure of stunningly cruel feudal Japan against the backdrop of Europe, which is already emerging from feudalism.
The book is a look at Japan from the side of a feudal lord. A highly embellished look. Propaganda.
Hiroyuki Sanada is a legend. Him just being in it is worth the watch. Anna Sawai, who played Kiriko in Ninja Assassin is a very underrated pick up. The novel (Shogun) is one of the greatest stories ever written. It's up there with The Lord of The Rings series, Dune, Journey to the West, the Harry Potter series, and A Game of Thrones (Song of Ice & Fire series). It isn't talked about enough actually compared to those books. If you haven't read it and you're reader, give it a read. It's worth your time, especially if you like history.
Agreed with Shogun, just not with your whole list 🙂
@@ashocck8065 I don't care.😌
Thank you going to have to make this my next read or Audible.
I grew up knowing Henry Sanada, Hiroyuki's screen name in the 80s movies in my home country. He is still the best actor for this genre.

Hiroyuki Sanada, in my humble opinion, is irreplaceable as an actor and artist. May he live very long and continue to prosper!
YAAASS! Been waiting for a big budget Samurai movie/series since Last Samurai
The sets they built in Port Moody were massive, I used to work across the street from where alot of this was filmed. And no, I didn't meet or see any of the main actors, just the buildings.

I can already tell this is going to be one of my favorite shows. Holy damn.
Not sure yet, but it most certainly will be one of the 2024s shows!
The original was great. Good timing for a remake, too.
I don't get the hype. It looks like another Hollywood "white man goes to savage land, finds himself in a conflict with locals, gets rejected at first but eventually everyone on the good side accepts him and he helps them, and in the end he sleeps with an exotic local girl".
How many of these types of movies/shows do we need to have? LOL
@@darthvadeth6290 As many as they want to make? As many as we want to watch? Both?
But I also don't get the hype. My guess it's the same people that leave a 5/5 ⭐️ review on episode one, knowing there's a 90% chance that the rest of a show will flop.
@@darthvadeth6290 It's a remake of a very popular and well done movie series. The series is an adaption of a very good bestseller. And that bestseller based his novel on the historical figure of William Adams. While many events of the series are fictional of course, William Adams WAS the most influential foreigner in Japan of that period, he WAS key advisor of a shogun and he DID become a samurai.
And the hype is mostly due to the fact that the original series was very well done but 45 years old. We are just eager so see an updated version with modern technology and budgets. It's certainly more interesting than another installment of John Wick, Fast&Furious or stupid superhero movies.
EDIT:
I want to add that, since you seem to be not familiar with the material, the story is NOT the usual "westerner goes east and introduces western values and they all love it". Telling the story through the eyes of a westerner is the easiest way to introduce westeners to a culture and period that we aren't familiar with. And this IS all about japanese culture and that period. John Blackthorne (the fictional book version of Adams) isn't converting anyone to become western. He learns to love the culture and ultimately decides to stay there voluntarily. By the end of the story he despises the west and doesn't want any of that anymore. So, no, not the usual tropes.
2:02 that shot is peak cinematography
The twitching of the tired and post-adrenaline samurai really sells it
I’ve read the book. It is an absolute mind boggling masterpiece of writing and story telling. Excited to see how this pans out.

My favourite novel. So much potential ... oh please let it not suck.
Honestly just going by the trailer they clearly didn't focus too much on the western characters which is ideal - the real drama is amongst the Samurai and they're just caught up in it. Works well in the book as a western reader "self insert" and should do so here too!

One of the all-time greatest novels ever written. James Clavell, master of the historical novel.
Yes and this is looking far better than the 1980 mini-series, James Clavell had a really good trilogy with Shogun, Tai-Pan & Noble House.
@@chestersleezer8821 It certainly looks bloodier than the 80s mini-series. I'll definitely be re-reading Shogun before I watch this series. Oh. And don't forget Clavell also wrote "Gai-Jin", set 20 years after "Tai-Pan" and is about Malcolm Struan, the son of Tess and Culum Struan. Pretty good book. Gotta read all four (including the masterpiece that is "Noble House") again, soon.
that is a LARGE estatement. The novel is good, etc but as all historical novels the historical value is VERY limited and this is no exception.
They normally full certain characters with many modernizing aspects that in many ways go against the historical sources. I can recall some with, for example, Gaius Marius as an honorable man with good aspirations and a victim of other's plans when, according to historical sources of the moment he was a master of assasinating his oponets.....
I read it when I was teenager and the only part I remember is when all the Japanese women were amazed by the size of his penis.
Like I said, I was a teenager...
Then we can see Yabu, Toranaga, Mariko, Ishido... N at last our Anjin-san..
I saw the tv show in 90s with my mom, then I read the book and it became one of my favorite, so exited that the new version will come out

Been reading a manga set in this period called Shigurui -- absolutely brutal and graphic violence, but not in the typical manga/anime way. That's the vibe that this show seems to have from the trailer. It's ironic but unsurprising that it took a western production to capture this kind of tone. Japanese period dramas all typically seem to re-use the same kind of "chanbara" style of action developed in the 50s-70s. Stock sound effects for sword clangs, bright red blood spurting like fountains from a wound (or no blood at all). It's nice to see something that captures the gritty medieval vibe of the Sengoku period, and doesn't shy away from showing the graphic brutality of that era.
Was thinking the same, japanese ones are not it, there is an anime too by the way

This is my second favourite Tai-pan is just..... perfect James Clavell was a master at this kind off story.
Yabu was the most complex character, thats for sure, my favorite as well.
In the original series Yabu was played by a famous comedian/funny man in Japan. Seeing him as someone who boiled men alive was a shock to many in Japan. I love the original series and the book is my all time favorite book. The original series did a good job of condensing the story around Blackthorn over three nights to make an intelligible story. With a larger series we will hopefully get more of the story from the book which had to be left out for the original series.
i remember the old movie, i loved it a lot. cant wait for the release
The huge cauldron torture left me speechless... what a world.
I look forward to it!
No man alive is able to fit in Mifune-san's footsteps. But if someone comes very close, then it's Sanada-san. Love the man since Ujio in Last Samurai. As long time fan (almost 40 years now) of the book and the 80s TV series, I'm looking forward to this one. Goosebumps and tears. Can't wait to meet Toranaga and Blackthorne again!
I also like Ken Watanabe. I read that he was offered the lead role in Crouching Tiger but turned it down. He does great stuff.
@@galept I like Watanabe-san as well. Great actor. But I don't see him in Crouching Tiger at all. Chow Yun-Fat is a versatile martial artist and fits way better on the role. Ken is only trained in Kendo, I think.
The cringe is real, Gaijin. 🤢🤮
There are two ways to depict Tokugawa Ieyasu (and by extension, Toranaga) in popular culture: as a charismatic leader that is patient and knows how to wait for the right time and lay down when needed (conceding Hideyoshi to rule Japan after the battles of Komaki and Nagakute) or as a cunning fox that can deal with alliances and politics (rise to power and establishing a shogunate). Toshiro Mifune’s interpretation of Toranaga was the first one, the gentle, and as he is unrivaled it is logical for Sanada to go the other route, the cunning. That way he doesn’t engage in a battle he cannot win against Mifune’s interpretation, give us something original instead of copying the acting we already have from the first Shogun series, and has room to shine for himself and not under another’s shadow.
From the trailer above, it does not look like it. Women beating up men in physical fights? Lady Mariko (the No. 1 woman in the story) was a strong (in character) woman in the original Michener's expansive novel (and a worthy story co-protagonist) but she was not involved in any physical fight with men, let alone win one.
I literally do not think ive ever been so excited to watch a show
This is a fantastic book. Easily one of my all time favorites. It looks like they at least took seriously
Wow. I have long wanted to watch such Japanese films about shinobi samurai and about Japan Ancient and the Middle Ages, especially like this. I'll watch this movie. =) ❤
I loved Hiroyuki Sanada on The Last Ship.
That was where I first saw him and I was very impressed with his acting there. Feels like a Japanese Liam Neeson type actor.
I recieved the book "Shogun" as a gift in hardcover version almost 30 years ago and I still have it. Read it it cover to cover every year even though it starts falling apart. After finishing, I pick up another book. Eiji Yoshikawa "Musashi". It fits perfectly in the time line. Highly recommended.
My favourite book. I have read it 4 times. I cannot wait for this!
The scale of it looks like it should be a film at the cinema and not a tv show. Looks fantastic, cant wait to see it.
Oh its a tv show? Nice more episodes than 2 hours movie
Go out and buy yourself an 80 inch flat screen TV and sit six feet from it. Don’t forget to crank the volume up.
It would have to be couple movies, one wouldn't have do it justice.
Covid and the dumbing down of society killed the cinema. Im suprised we still get good movies and tv shows at all
Bro forgot that TV series bring more money so the scale is bigger
Sometimes books shape our lives, particularly when you read them as a young person: Shogun blew my fkn MIND!!! I hope this is as good as it looks...
Wow. This is a must.
