  • The Frank Gehry design for the Louis Vuitton Foundation building was certainly innovative. But from a structural engineering perspective, there was nothing to suggest it was actually possible.

We have a Gehry building in Cincinnati. It is the Vontz Center at the University of Cincinnati. Every year since it was completed there has been scaffolding up somewhere around the outside of the building trying to fix water leaks and other problems. It is an interesting structure, but completely impractical.

Exactly what I was wondering about, water intrusion.

disagree, its ground breaking and pushes the limit of engineering.

I remember when I began my studies in Architecture, back in 2000, and went in full force with the innocence of the college freshman. Names like Ghery and Libenskind use to conjure images of great modern architecture. Now, many years years latter, I can’t help but roll my eyes at these turnips.

Not HOW did they build it but WHY did they build that??? Just because we can DOES NOT mean we should...........❤️

With all the engineering challenges and infrastructure needs everywhere - why spend time, effort, and energy on fanciful stuff like this?

Inspiration is important too. If there were no architects and engineers designed houses, they would all be cubes! And that's coming from an aspiring engineer!

…there is value in pushing the envelope….a lot can be learned, But not with taxpayer money. This was in a public area and suspect tax payers flipped the bill. Let private investment do these projects.

@@dionst.michael5818 No I wouldn't say so. This is just an objective waste of resources that could've gone to a better purpose - like a building that made more sense, was more functional, long lasting, solid and beautiful. This building is an exercise in a lack of common sense.

Unbuildable? Gimme a break. Don't those people know that it's pretty structurous and creative? This is supposed to be a futuristic building and Gehry is the creative key to our long living future.

Nothing is unbuildable - there are only budget constraints. This is why unique and groundbreaking projects should only be privately funded. Tax payers should never participate in ventures like this.
