When I started in my first manager position I began ever shift by getting there early. Could be as simple as 10-15mins early but when you do this it gives you time to get settled in and helps better prepare you for your day ahead. It has done me wonders and I recommend it to anyone just starting out.

I am not a manager yet and have been arriving early to work to set up and etc. I agree this is a good idea.
No matter what position you have, you should be there early
Do you have a degree?
1) Define a time to sit with your team, Prepare questions, Listen
2) Have mentors to help guide you. Get on by... Looking for somebody who you admire and is levelheaded
3) Read 2 Books a month, Learn from outside sources
4) Journal about your previous day/self-reflection (helps with clarity, realizing your wins and growing)

My mum was meticulous about punctuality, and always taught us to be early.
*If you're early, you're on time, if you're on time you're late, and if you're late, it's unacceptable!*
In fact, when she said be home by 10pm, she meant 9.55 at the latest

This is the second video I've listened to today. I just subscribed to your channel. So impressed with the advice you are providing to current and up-and-coming workers and leaders. Your commentary is accruate and helpful to all of us. Of all the mentors I have in my life and long career in HR... I would only add that, in time, I understood that these individuals who became, and have remained, in my life were believers in LISTENING. They also all had humor, allowed me to make mistakes, especially at the beginning of my work journey through my 30 years in my positions, and have remained contacts for me to this day. Sadly, two of the individuals have passed. Their advice and support has lifted me and I now, at 66, provide a listening ear and sympathy to younger workers around me. I have not sought out this role. It has come to me, and surprise, by my actions. It's wonderful because I don't give advice unless I'm asked. LISTENING and providing encouragement and suggestions goes a long way. Mentors are there.... they are usually the people who demonstrate a humor, a quiet confidence, and they LISTEN when you talk. I learned the hard way. LOL

Growing up in the early stages of the internet I had to work my way up many times and fall even more times before I felt comfortable in management.

First week of manager ever, but theres no structure or training, Ive been thrown to the wolves. Not to mention most of these employees been there for like 5 plus years. Not sure they even know what I've been hired as. First two days been spending time in the kitchen , its weird to say but I feel I'm a lil to hands on cause starting to think they think I'm there as some cook or something. Idk. But def going in tom and being more assertive and less hands on doing work for others cause yes I am there to help but not to do the job for them.
This is great, Mike! The basics are forgotten so often even by experienced managers. Very much down my street :-) Sharing a similar attitude and approach on my channel.

@@robievilhelm8514 Well, I am no longer working in management. Michael's was a logistical nightmare. Not enough staff, and disinterested corporate management. I went back to Best Buy. Best decision ever. I am looking at fast tracking back into management, and I learned so much about what NOT to do from Michael's.

I'm 21 and this is my first serious role as a manager/team leader (team of 5) I got some experience in this area but still, I feel blind so I want to learn as much as possible (I really like professionalism in work) cause so far I know that a good manager gives space for team members to develop based on constructive feedback, listen to the team and most of all, is there for them cause without a team we would be nowhere. Manager succeeds only when the whole team succeed.

These are powerful ideas. Implementing any of them (or better all of them) will give great results. Specially mentorship I would say is a very fast way to openly discuss your fears and get advise from more experience professional who went through that. Thanks Mike for sharing!
I can also say that I have performed all the roles in my department during my tenure, so I know my business pretty well. Since I have a capable coordinator, who ensures the administrative/technical and daily departmental deliverables are covered, I can focus more on the overall business health-cost, human resource allocation/hiring, advising and consulting with other managers in the company on a major initiative we are all involved in, and planning projects and opportunities for the team.

I love the biography autobiography thing I have don't that and continue to do so as it has helpede not only manage companies but has help me learn many other things to I encourage all younger generation of inspired co-workers or employees to do so and a good book can't be wrong and a good way to fill in some time if one chooses. I love to from time to time still and probably will always.
Tips ► Show what you've contributed to the job. Meet with a supervisor to talk about all that you've given to the job, providing examples and numbers when necessary. Talk to people in managerial positions to see which skills you need. This will give you an idea of what to work on or which areas in which you already excel.

I like to ask lots of different people how things work. You gain a lot of knowledge, get to know people, and you may find a better way to do it.
Never ever say ANYTHING that could be taken as negative towards someone else. Speak highly of everyone even if they are openly discrediting someone.

I have just been promoted to team leader in my company. I am going into an established well run and experienced care team, supporting individuals that have come through the criminal justice system and require support to integrate into the community so they can live a better quality of life.
I'm 48, I have a lot of life experience and about 8yrs experience in care, 4yrs with my current employer. I am looking forward to this and appreciate these videos. Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated. By nature, I am laid back, logical, relaxed, organized and positive.
I know it has been 3 years but how is it been? Any advices for me ? I applied for a supervisor role and I’m getting it but I never had this experience.
@RocketJav It was very hard going. I left after 1.5yrs and got a less stressful job for the same pay. I landed right at the start of covid which did not help any career progression. It just wasn't what I expected. The company I worked for really took the mick in their job expectations and workload. Best tip... be organised and be nice to people, you'll get more out of staff. Treat staff like humans, not like numbers. Deal with staff who are always off in line with policies so they know you ain't a pushover.

I did 1 on 1s before I became a manager as a development tool, so I continued that. When I became a manager, the FIRST things I did was ask for a mentor as well as join a mentor group.

First thing most new managers seem to do, is pick out an employee (usually the most skilled) and sack them, to set an example.
Fact is, anyone who WANTS to be a manager, probably shouldn't be.
