About time, please read the book of trespass & the trespassers companion. Then you will realise what & how the land was stolen from the people.

Beautiful, powerful short film. Thank you. I loved the sound of her breath after she caught the cookie up one the rock and quiet as she then looked out upon the vast wonder. Which in the universal scale of things is tiny actually. What a miracle is planet Earth. How could anyone do anything to damage such a miracle? It's beyond my comprehension. But it's a great mistake to think humans care, or even spare a thought about this. Those that do must continue to show love, understanding and kindness. That's all we can do. 💚

So why does the film start with two people climbing over a fence and then a drystone wall which appears to have been broken down (over time). Not a good start. Whether people like it or not those walls are expensive to maintain, and required skilled people. The result is often the cheaper wire fence. Such walls are now part of the landscape and artificial boundaries necessary for livestock management by the people who work the land.

Speaking for myself, I've only ever (carefully) climbed over fences or walls where stiles aren't present or gates are chained shut.
I hear what you're saying but this film is definitely not encouraging people to damage the environment, and the opening shot is a metaphor for the restriction of the countryside by current laws.

If land was free to roam without restriction I'm sure people wouldn't feel the need to hide from a farmer and farm buildings and enter in a concealed spot over wired fences and walls. The argument might be that more damage comes to the land when land is not accessible and roaming is restricted, in comparison to when it is open to explore. The majority of people respect the land and want to enter in the easiest spot. Since moving to Scotland the anxiety of being confronted is not longer there, and don't feel any need to secretly enter a fieild where the farmer can't see. Walking through farm buildings and over locked gates I've only been greated with hello's and smiles. Even when fields have few gates I will happily walk around for as long as I need to get to an easy exit and enterance over a gate. I'm sure most people do this and are more inclined to respect the land when roaming is welcomed.

What I'm saying is that the look is not good at the start
especially when you are trying to pass on a message which can be seen by anyone. This is particularly relevant to youth groups. @@mollyceris9557

An important film, but I was appalled to see them climb over a fence and clamber over a dry stone wall at the beginning,
A very bad message to send into the public domain, The BMC should be more responsible than that.
If we want to access the land we must respect its infrastructure and understand the people that farm and manage the land.

Hey Simon! That's a fair point - at the BMC we are rightly held to a high standard when it comes to showing a good example, but I suppose my reply would be that this is a fictionalised bit of storytelling and not meant to be a perfect example of how people behave in the countryside. We have a constant stream of films and resources that we produce to promote responsible behaviour in the countryside. Several more iterations of the respect series due this year and next. Trying to positively influence behaviour is what we spend most of our time doing.
I'm sure the filmmaker would agree with me that the first shot is meant to represent barriers in the countryside - many of us have had to climb over gates or fences when there are no stiles or a gate is chained shut (even on public rights of way), we'd all prefer not to (god knows we've all ripped our trousers at least once on barbed wire). I would like to hope that people take that first shot with the context of the wider film and not as a 'monkey see monkey do' thing! Thanks for your response.

Why do farmers of Eastern Europe not install fences EVERYWHERE? Fences on unused land must be demolished.
