I had a wipeout on a ~5ft wave when I was a kid that made me lose my sense of direction of up and down for about 5 seconds, which felt like an eternity at the time, and since then gained a very serious respect for the power of the ocean. I can't even begin to imagine what this stuff might feel like.

i used to watch surfing videos and be like... "doesnt look that bad its water". But now that I surf and know that even a 3-5 foot wave is kinda powerful. I cant imagine surfing big waves like that.

We moved to Maui in '84; (Laird was just starting tow-surfing behind Zodiacs at Log Cabins.) The first thing you notice is the speed and volume and ferocity of wipeouts on even small waves because there's no continental shelf like Cali.
      These slabs look beyond terrifying.

I had this wipeout in Cloud9. My board stuck between my legs. It hit me right there. So painful that i cant hold my breath anymore. And theres a set of waves coming. The third and biggest wave almost toke my life. I had this final surface and one last breath. Still lucky. Lesson learned. Never understimate the power of waves. One Love!

A friend of mine went over the falls on the first of a big powerful 11' set and was held under by ALL SIX WAVES. He popped up in shallow water with all his breath already exhaled and hauled air in for an age sounding like an elephant trumpeting. I'm so glad he made it because when he saw him go over I paddled in after him looking for him because I thought he was gonna drown.

Any tips on surviving things like this? Like what do you do when you're getting thrown around like that? Do you try to swim up, just lay there? What do you guys do? Trying to get into surfing, obviously I'll start way smaller than this but just in case I get caught in a tricky situation I wanna know what you guys do.

If your wiping out, face your butt to the water, acts like a cushion, make your body relaxed and spread your body out. Stay calm, once you start panicking you lose your breathe. Ik I'm just 15, but i've been surfing spots like pipeline, sandys, and makapuu for years.

@Peter94686.- Hilarious spills? You obviously have never surfed mate. Even a 3ft grungy wave can work someone ove. My limit was about 12 ft, and that was scary. But Shipsterns, Teahupou,. Mavericks, etc. That's life and death! Fun to some but even Kelly Slater said " Anyone who isn't scared of teahpou at 8ft is crazy".
I had my steamer stipped of me at 10 ft 'Caves' at Cactus. It didn't worry me, but no way would i have the balls to surf these Death waves. Fun for me is 6-8 ft. Fun to others is mental. Glad to watch though.

I got pitched at pretty big west swell sunset and landed right on my back and it knocked the breath out of me. then the whole ocean came down on top of me. got fucking worked through the impact zone over by boneyards. finally made it to shore and laid on the beach breathing for an hour. respect the ocean, and mother nature, or she'll snatch you in the wink of a pretty girls eye.

That's no joke! I rode one of the biggest waves I've ever ridden in Costa Rica. And got worked, in comparison to the waves in the video I rode a tiny wave. But getting the air knocked out of you, or swallowing water and being stuck in the impact zone is scary as hell!

  • @alibube41

Nothing compared to this, but this summer I was surfing in OCMD and I was out in the water and there was a 6 footer coming at me. I knew I didn’t want to take it so I went to paddle over it. Just so you know, I’m 15, 90 pounds, and 5’2, and I had a longboard so I physically couldn’t duck dive under the wave. Anyway, I thought I was gonna make it over but the ocean had other plans. It flipped me and my board just as I was about to get over the top and I started falling backwards. My board came back and hit my nose (which broke) and I was stuck underwater for a few seconds with a headache and a bloody nose. It’s so scary when you have no control over your body and your just flailing in the water trying to keep everything in so you don’t break anything else. To make everything better (or worse) I was surfing in low tide because you’re on,y allowed to surf before 10 or something so I was dangerously close to the bottom. Anyway I came up perfectly fine except for my nose which healed in a few weeks because it wasn’t too bad. I kept surfing though even when I was supposed to “lay low with physical activity “ lol. A similar thing also happened to my friend but he sliced his stomach with his fiberglass fin when he wiped out.
    Good memories 😎🤙🏽🏄🏼‍♀️

3:00 Grant Twiggy Baker going over the falls and you can see his little speck of a body going for the ride. He probably made a complete 360 degree rotation in that wave. Fell on the face, over the falls and back to the same position where he started in the white wash.

These guys can all hold there breaths for 4-5 minutes plus. Just when the force impacts your stomach and knocks the wind out of you as your gasping for that calm cool breath, thats what causes the deaths. That and entrapment under water. But these big wave surfers are so fit, show no panic and hold there breaths so long.

only thing I like about charging big days at the wedge in socal.. its either you're going to break a bone/paralyzed, but no drowning chance really.. wedge in california I think is the safest place to take off on really big waves.. when it gets over 12ft at wedge it breaks in about 8ft deep water with sand bottom - not nearly as scary as 8 foot pipe over a reef... i never get used to riding anything bigger than 6 over a reef... its always fear in the back of my mind...great video though... that shipsterns wipe was mental.

its not that the water 'knocks it out of them' if anything it would just knock out carbon dioxide.
just when you panic all of your muscles 'eat up' all of the oxygen in your lungs. But you are also right in the fact that the pressure acting on their body would cause their muscles to tense up and hence same process. Thats why they all say they just try and relax.
