The Best (As in Worst) Surfing Wipeouts of 2016

  • Wipeouts never get old. Performance surfing grows by leaps and bounds every year, but eating shit has essentially remained the same for decades. But we never, ever tire of watching it and hearing the stories behind it. Because, and here's the thing: surfers are generally horrible when it comes to talking about their own surfing. But they are amazing when recounting almost dying. Not sure why, but it's true.
    Greatest Wipeouts is a Surfline original series showcasing death-defying surfing wipeouts, near-death experiences and heaviest waves of all time.

      Adelaide Aviation With waves that big, you can’t dive through. You keep getting rattled until you reach shore. Especially with the board, it’s like dragging another body through a wave. I’ve surfed 25 footers and it’s not fun when you wipeout.

      @@hanami2258 Same last summer I wiped out, because I dove through the wave by accident. The current was strong and rlly pulled me under. I remember my vision turning red and everything almost went black. I almost drowned but in my head I was saying God please don't have me die. I kept fighting and eventually got out I also hit my knee into a rock and started bleeding. If I hit my head I think I would've died.

    Waves are so powerful. Getting crushed is brutal. But worse is when the wave holds you underwater for a long time. Still, I'd rather drown than get killed by a shark.

    • @joocy6346

    • @dogeilante
      @dogeilante 7 років тому +167

      I'd rather get killed by a shark because you don't know you're going to die until it bites you, and when you're drowning you know you're going to die. However, both are still equally feared from my perspective lol

    • @MyName_Jeff
      @MyName_Jeff 7 років тому +64

      Sierra Not likely... It would probably take a chunk out of you and then come back for more or leave you to bleed to death.

    • @MrTigerlore
      @MrTigerlore 7 років тому +110

      MyName Jeff is a smart guy. That's most likely how you would experience death-by-shark. In other words, you'd know what attacked you. You'd flail in the water for a minute or two, bleeding out as the shark circled. You'd notice your missing limb, shredded flesh, perhaps your organs floating out of you. Then you might watch as the shark starts to eat you. Or maybe it'd just grab you and drag you into the deep--where you'd drown.
      I'll pick the wave.

    • @dogeilante
      @dogeilante 7 років тому +31

      Tiger, your body would go numb, and you wouldn't feel a thing. Chances are you'd faint if the torso down would be cut off. Even if it was a leg, your body would probably numb the unsevered part. Don't get me wrong, it's still horrible, but I'd rather get eaten. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd rather drown because then at least people could bury me. If no one knows where my body was, I'd rather get eaten, but if they knew, I'd drown.

Not only that, but multiple waves hold downs in 20 ft plus surf takes so much training and skill, mentally and physically. When Twiggy said he didn't touch the bottom but he could feel it's presence I can relate. I had many wipeouts where I could sense the bottom before I touched it and then I finally touched it. It's a weird feeling and I don't know how it's possible

    My worst wipe out was in Morocco i was there to surf 6 to 9 feet max and after a day of surfing 8 feet i was feeling good then a big 10+ feet wave came i did not know it was going to be so big i total messed up dropped out of the wave hit the bottom was held under for over a min leash snapped which was first time for me soon as i got up next wave owned me again under for a long time by the time i was swimming i was so tired from lack of oxygen i could not even move my arms lucky for me a Australian girl was paddling out and found me i was so close to dying it put me off ever trying big waves again. And yes 10+ feet is big to me i'm English i learned on 3 feet waves

Both sharks and the board hitting your head is something you dont need to worry about. So if you just have fun and focus on the waves, your fine dude!
