Last December I started building the Mercury 1.1 from Zero G. This has been one of my longer builds but I am so happy with how it has turned out. For anyone looking to upgrade their Ender 5 or build a very capable CoreXY 3d printer this is a killer option.

FINALLY SOMEONE MAKES A VIDEO EXPLAINING WHAT THIS IS!!! Thanks, Daniel!
Just got home from the US! What an amazing video. I couldn't explain it better myself. Much love to you and your family. It was great fun watching you build this and learning together as we did :D
I own a Merc and still watched this video haha! Good job. Great to see these awesome printers get a bit more airtime.
I’m currently converting my E5p into a mercury one with hydra. Awesome vid! Keep up the awesome work
Been loving my merc build so far. Can’t wait to see what plans they have coming out
I had not heard of any of this stuff, so thanks!!
This is a very interesting proposition for an ender5 upgrade with a great community behind it.
The kits are a very good option, a cost breakdown of different combinations would've been great to see as this looks like it can easily add up and probably price match ready to go option
The core benefit of such an upgrade is that you can buy an already functioning printer, use it for a while, then invest more money into it if you want to. Even if it ends up more expensive than a ready made solution, this ability to see if you will actually be printing that much, and the ability to distribute expenses throughout the lifetime of the printer, can be more valuable.
@p_serdiuk it also extends the life of said components, and makes one less obsolete printer. I'm looking into this build and sourcing a lot of my excess parts in house.
@@p_serdiukI went through this with my ender 5 plus. I managed to learn about different filaments and got a microswiss direct drive but the rest of the machine is lacking and too slow for a few things I'm developing and want to start selling. This is the perfect upgrade to achieve a good production speed and doesn't have the plastic wheels so the print quality should be better too. I played around with a Biqu skr mini e3v3 and put klipper on it but realized to run the trident I need 3 independent stepper drivers for each trident leg and the skr mini has one driver that drives two lead screws. With the skr 3 pro I ordered I can use higher 48 volt powered stepper drivers to run the corexy motors faster 🤔. Cant wait to see how fast I can push this thing.
@@TTS-TPhonestly it's still pretty wasteful 😂. Like you basically throw away the whole ender 5 components and use the 2020 extrusion frame. Even the nice Sheet metal control box is tossed. Would be better to just build your own frame from 2020 extrusions.
Thx for the Info, i was about to start the build and modeled an enclosure by myself. Then I hold off until the new models are released. I spend so much time on their discord just to read the infos and showcases
Thx so much for bringing us this great content! 🥳🥳
This is pretty sweet. The ender 5 has so many problems and this solves all of them!
okay how did you comment before the vid even came out
Awesome stuff. I have a kit on pre-order at Fabreeko, can't wait for it to ship. I'm gonna do the one.1 conversion first because I don't have the money to do the hydra yet. The new enclosed frame looks awesome, hopefully I'll be able to do that whenever I install the hydra.
Really nice bit of kit. My Ender 5 is pretty reliable as is but the conversion looks tempting.
I just picked up a dirt cheap ender 5 pro to convert over! Been planning for a few weeks now. Excited to get going on it.
This is sick!
This is cool, I might end up buying a ender 5 to convert into one of these. I originally wanted to get another ender 3 and do the switch wire mod on it but this makes more sense to me than converting a ender 3
Then just buy a voron !
I have an ender 5 and this seems like an awesome upgrade and way cheaper than the Voron I was looking at buying
I did not know that was a thing! Maybe the ender 5 plus gathering dust is due for a coreXY revival!
I have an Ender 5 Plus and love it and hate it at the same time. When it's honed in, prints are great, however after each print I have to tune it up again.
I want this kit.
This mod is great. Currently looking at the hydra conversition. Only thing that scares me is the wireing and electronics
I hope a mod like this gets made for the Ender 5 S1. it would mostly work apart from the fact some of the extrusions on the s1 have flat sides without channels for mounting things
i'm using the mercury since its birth literally... my serial number is 2.0.4 - so the 4th finished conversion and contributed some minor stuff for the usermods. Also had close contact with DutchDude while development of the 2nd revision was ongoing. The first version had some serious design flaws. The last mesh leveling i've done was in february 2022, still getting perfect 1st layers today. Only switched the plate to cast aluminum and 230V heater, z-motion system is still stock. For z probing i went for a Super PINDA, cause i had some issues with the clicky probe, i suspect the magnets, maybe bad conductivity, cause probing with that one was all over the place. All in all, i love the Mercury and printing reliably for roughly 2 years now
First time I've heard of this. I've got an Ender5 + that is printing reasonably well and regularly, but this conversion looks really cool. Will definitely be looking into it! Thanks for doing the video. What range of print speeds can one expect from the base level 1.1 conversion?
This is a great project, Theseus' ender 5 haha, i have an ender 5 pro but I currently use it for production, it's a great hobby project but what's left of the original ender 5 as you said in your conclusion, barely the power supply, at that point I would much rather consider buying a voron kit for example, great video!
A big speed increase as soon as that enclosed one is here
I like the look of the thick bed. My beds are hopeless.
I really like the mercury + hydra idea but the specific parts seem to be in short supply so I started looking at V-Core 3.1 and Voron 2.4. Maybe I will look into sourcing Zero G one more time before I pull the trigger, especially if the new enclosed and complete version is available and if it is maybe 4040 extrusion like a Doomcube
Just bought all the parts for this but I'm going all aluminum even with the hydra arms. Mellow makes an aluminum toolhead for this and also a water cooled extruder that their Goliath hotend hooks into. Also got a fystec lightweight gantry so I want to see how fast I can push this. Starting with a tool head blower fan but it seems running a duct to the tool head with a remote fan can cut even more weight 🤔. They also make milled out linear rails that could reduce even more weight from the gantry.
Nice artwork.. not sure if Id print on it or put it in a display case
id love this for the Ender 6 poor things sat in my garage just getting dusty
My next project is going to be an ender 3 to switch wire. It would be awesome if you did that too!
I really like the modified EVA that they have here, I think it can be applied to the two trees sapphire family (I have the Diamond Head right now, but they don't have a Rapido mount so I started to look for alternatives)
Could this mod apply to the Elegoo Neptune X as well?
Have two Ender 5s that need this upgrade.
thinking of getting one of these kits for my ender 5 plus
do you have a link for the engine you showed at 10:38? id love to print it
I have heard of the project, but not the specifics. Thanks for a clear explanation. Sounds like a way to make a good printer from scratch, What would the cost be for all of the parts required for the total upgrade including the new frame? I think this should be sold as a total kit - no Ender 5 needed.
Where did you get the orca slicer profile and the Zero G build plate texture?
i have a worn out ender 5 that i'd been thinking about turning into a mini VORON trident... bed is too warped for my liking anymore, as well as worn out v-slot wheels. I'll be looking into this setup
This is great!
Just ended up with an ender 5 pro and 2 ender 3s for almost nothing so I am going to convert my 5 asap
Hmm I have an Ender 5 Pro w/4.27+BLT+FS and have tried to convert to Klipper via the Sonic Pad with alot of frustration, this may be another possible upgrade to get better use of the printer vs trying to build a Voron 2.4.
I wonder how the new from scratch build will compare to a trident or a ratrig in terms of capability and price
Interesting take on Core XY
Thanks for sharing your experiences Good and bad with all of us 🙂
This is a great video and has certainly renewed my enthusiasm for my Ender 5 and 5+. I have to say I have struggled to get reliable quality and prints even treating all the basics and levelling until I'm blue in the face. These mods seem to automate a lot of that. I'm at a cross roads. I would like to be able to enclose the frame on at least one of them as I'd like to be able to print ASA and ABS. It seems to be better to build from scratch if you are doing the full Hydra mod. I'm trying to get an idea of the cost of doing this would be grateful if anyone has figures.
Hello @Modbot, word of caution, I have the Manta M5P, with the CB1. It doesn't support screens through the DSI, if you plug one in, it won't power on. You'll need a regular pi to unlock that funtion. I am not sure if an HDMI screen with USB touch input would work as an alternative.
I wonder if there is already a WobbleX mod for the Hydra bed.
Could I use the micro Swiss ng that can go on a liner rail with the mercury 1.1 or do I have to do a custom tool head
Can I do these upgrades on the 5s1?
If you don't have an Ender 5 as a starting point would you do this or a voron? or other?
If I don’t have an Ender 5, what’s the best coreXY kit to build?
Wonder if i can do this with a cr 10 max? It along with most printers seems to just be ender/i3 clones of various sizes anyway.
I created a custom Mod Max upgrade to get a 310x310 print bed. I’m surprised they don’t do this out of the box. It requires no extra parts (just modified printed parts) other than the larger bed/heater.
I think i will try AWD mod on the Zero G Mercury 1.1. At my first look, I think compared to the VZbot AWD, the Zero G Mercury got more rigid frame and more space efficient, 3 points bed, and also it seem easy to mount Voron toolhead on
Is there just a Z axis upgrade for the Ender 5 plus?
From my understanding, linear rails help with smoothness and no worrying about v slot wheels having to be replaced.
So ... all the other upgrades like eco slide, top tier just improve speed?
What about the core xy rails? Anything like that for the Z axis? To help keep bed level at all times?
Can the hydra be installed to the ender 5 plus?
I really like this printer. Now I am a bit sad that I haven't got a ender 5
I bought a used Tronxy X5SA for $100 a couple weeks ago with the intention of turning it into one of the cool new CoreXY platforms. Now the problem is that I don't know which one to choose and where to even start 😂
Does this have better features than a voron?
About how many hours do they estimate to do a standard 1.1 update?
Has there been many changes to this build since this video? I'm very interested in convert my ender 5 pro
Any update on the frame?
Wonder if one could use a Sovol SV05 frame for this… I have one gathering dust that would benefit from this.
What is the cheapest way to get into a core xy printer these days? Ender K1, Bambu P1p, etc
Could this be done with the Sovol SV05?
Please, where did you get a clicky mod for Eva 2.4 ?? Thanks
For the cost associated with it, it might make more sense to get a k1 instead. I guess it comes down to if you want a project or a printer that works out of the box. On yours, you should go with a creality sonic pad for the interface. Would also be cool to see the dyze design horizon auto bed leveling sensor on that. It uses the nozzle as the touch probe based on a load cell. No more adjusting z offset after nozzle changes.
So true. I feel like a lot of these projects (starting with Voron) are going to be losing steam and go from a niche to an even finer niche because they'll be losing the crowd that was there for the quality, reliability and speed, since the big manufacturers can finally deliver all three for way less than the cost of any of those kits. Obviously the tinkerers, the tuners and the modders are not going anywhere, but the companies that specialize in catering to this market will definitely be feeling the squeeze.
@Madderall I'm going through that debate now. I've got an ender 5 plus with some mods thinking about going corexy with it but the idea of getting a set it and forget it, good looking, enclosed printer is starting to be appealing.
@@kyleo1236 The 5 plus is a sexy machine, but there's always a chance that after a major overhaul like this some mods won't play nicely with each other blowing your budget, so it's a gamble. If it's already a good performer with the mods you already got I'd leave it alone considering it doesn't cost that much more to get the k1, so you'll have two reliable printers instead of one potentially major headache.
i've been looking to convert my ender 5+ to mercury one.1 with vzbot tool head and btt pad7.
Does this work for the Ender 5 S1? Been looking into making this printer CoreXY
Can you detail those other upgrades made that you gloss over at the end? Even in a comment? That would help us to mimic the build.
I really like this project. Unfortunately, it doesn't support the Ender 5 S1 which I was thinking of buying, but if I can't convert it to corexy I might buy the K1 instead. I do prefer the open extrusion frame style of 3d printers though which the K1 is not.
Does Mercury.1 require Eva toolhead? Is it possible to adapt different DD carriage? I've just recently bought microswiss ng and I really don't want to buy another one 😅
Question: Would it be better to do the Hydra first or the CoreXY Motion first?
My current Ender 5 has a Micro Swiss NG and was converted to Klipper. Apart from that, the printer is stock, including currently having the o creality 4.2.2 board.
where can i find that white and grey skirt/legs he has on the bottom of his printer? ive been googling for about at hour and cant find anything similar, maybe im just a moron
can you enclose it for ABS print though?
can I ask what cable mount are you using?
Could a elegoo neptune X be converted
Are your black toothed idlers 3D printed or did you buy those?
Great video! What SLICER are you using? Rewound the video several times, but couldn't get the name of it. Thanks. Got it! It's ORCASLICER :)
Does anyone know if this works for the Sovol SV05?
Is this mod compatible with Ender 5 S1?
Do u loose any x and y
Have not heard of the Murcury1 but I am planning on building a steel frame to get more rigidity and more head space 400 x 400 x 500. But I want to make the bed like the rat rig on balls but I see what you have done and that gave me an idea. Will see what I go with. I like the Rat Rigs way of keeping the bed suspended but I like the some stuff on the Voron . Although it seems my machine seems is going to lean more towards the Rat Rig I would like to add the Tap but I will see if I can incorporate that into The Eva tool head somehow otherwise it will be the Stealth Burner. I might design a completely new tool head or a mix between the two. I have already bought the 30 x 30 Square tubing and I plan on building an enclosure for my Ender 3V2 to print ABS part for Core XY.
You can print it in petg.
I build a corexy with my students. The upgreade idea is using a Bigthree skl 1.4 turbo. Board. What end stop sensors you use? Can i instal the leveling sensor on this boar? The wifi is operational? The software for android cel is avalable. Thanks for attention.
Where can I find the cfg for klipper
Also seems aliex is the only source for components, sad panda, I'd rather support fabreek and such
Why not build a vzbot off a tronxy?
I have two add-on components on my E5+ that I like, and would prefer to be able to keep, if I decide to do this conversion. The first is an Exoslide gantry, and the other is a MicroSwiss DD. Can anyone reading this please let me know if this is possible. If it's not possible, can I reconfigure my BTT SKR Pro v1.2 to control three separate Z motors?? I am currently set up for X, Y, Z0, E0, and E1 is being used for Z1, and I have one remaining spot on the board for a stepper driver which can hopefully be used for Z2. I would be willing to forgo the MS DD to be able to print multiple colors, but I think that would require a mainboard that has more than six stepper drivers. I also have a 3/8 thick cast aluminum tool plate for the print bed, with a Keenovo bed heater that I also want to keep. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I got a dead ender 5 gathering dust... looks like I have a project!
Why does a new frame need to be released? If you put enclosed it with sheet metal, it would make it more rigid than any frame change.
Software is what stops me from doing a lot of these types of builds and/or upgrades 😢
Budget RailCore??
W/ a Hemera extruder and Hydra, I ended up estimating $900 for the conversion. This is with the ender 5 plus. Can someone clarify?
If anything, I would like to see the ability to buy this upcoming frame in anodized aluminum.
Following
I did , Like and subscribe... Great Video. I have a Ender5 Pro with bigTree tech MB and touch display. Love it , works like a champ with no hassle but it's SLOoooW , If i do just the Mecury 1.1 will that get me faster ?
i have an ender 5 plus that i'm in the middle of rebuilding. it has sat collecting dust since i got my x1 carbon. i'm at an impasse because i can't crimp to save my life.
Even though I can only admire all the effort has been put in this modification and can say big thanks for the zerog team.
I can only highly suggested don't not buy Ender5 for this build ever as conversion start.
It would be MUCH better to look at voron/trident kits project - > CZ buying ender 5 just to almost completely rebuild it from empty frame - is huge waste of time, unless you simply loves to mess around with stuff.
And even if you want to build yourself - > again voron 2.4/trident kits would be much better.
BTW I did this conversion myself - so I know what I am talking about.
you need some vzbot in your live :)
gotta scout out a 2nd hand ender 5 in my local before this video gets too popular
could a voxlab aquilia x2 be converted like that as well ???
No..
@@coltenmeredith8899 shame
If you upgrade/use a the merc frame, is it even an Ender 5 anymore? Why not just go Voron, Ratrig, or one of the many other already proven DIY printers at that point...
No I did say that if you are going hydra then it makes sense to just get the new frame when it’s out and bypass the Ender all together. It’s a great printer and I love the toolhead.
@@ModBotArmy yeah I guess I'm saying at that point it just makes more sense to go with one of the more proven DIY printers who have a larger community backing them...
Is this compatible with the ender 6?
No. The ender 6 is already coreXY
@@coltenmeredith8899 I see, thanks
i want to buy more printer and consider in rat rig but still over price to me ,when i see this project hydra this shed me up this seem resonable price i am looking for
