I don't know how videos are rated....views, subscriptions, likes or notifications but I enjoy sitting in front of my big screen to view my videos. Unless I am missing something there is no way to express your liking of videos when views as mentioned. So I try and remember and come back and click the like buttons from time to time. Your videos are by far the best I have found, keep up the excellent work.
Rud Dog - Thanks for the kind words!!! UA-cam uses a combination of likes (thumbs ups), subs, views, tags, etc to "rate" the videos. Every little bit helps, so I appreciate you making the extra effort! As far as I know there isn't a way to "thumbs up" when watching on the TV either... maybe something they will incorporate in the future. Thanks again for watching! Cheers, Kevin :)
I'm gonna have to second your thought. Don't get me wrong, there are some really great guys on here. I've learned a lot from them for fusion. I just haven't watched any of their videos for almost a year now. I pretty much gave up on learning from them because I found myself getting frustrated too often because they were not very, how do I say? To the point? There wasn't a single moment I felt like I had to filter through any useless jabbering in this video. I've never smashed the subscribe button so fast in my life. Thank you seriously.
Thanks, Rod! I appreciate the kind words and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this video. Please don't hesitate to comment on any of my videos should you have any questions. Cheers, Kevin :)
Bloody brilliant. It was driving me crazy on importing a OBJ and having so many faces after converting to BREP. This channel is a valuable source. Great work man!!
Thanks, Alex. I do have a revised version, which includes all of the recent changes and a few extra tricks/workflow tips. You can find that here ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html Cheers, Kevin :)
The current version of Fusion 360 as of 04/15/2020 has a considerably different MESH interface that is within Design and takes considerable research to be able to accomplish what you very nicely show in this video. Greatly appreciate all your hard work. Definitely encourage the developers to leave a better documented migration path for being able to transition from a prior baseline to a newly updated one. Best regards, Barry
Hi, Barry. You must've missed the note in the description and pinned comment. I have a newer version of this video that reflects the current UI - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html
Thanks, Mario! By the way, I do have a newer version of this STL conversion tutorial. You can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html
Kevin, I finally took the plunge and designed and printed something using real world measurements (digital calipers) and it worked! I made a replacement battery cover for my old (original) Nintendo Gameboy. It fits perfectly, on the first print! The only thing I forgot was the little 'catch' on the release tab. Thank you so very much for all your hard work and dedication to this series. Cheers!
A lot of great Fusion 360 expertise explained in a practical and useful way...quickly...precisely...and covering the things that aren't' normally mentioned. Thank you!
Thanks, very helpful. Just to save you some clicks, there's no need to click Apply and then OK, just OK works. Apply is for if you want to commit the change but stay in the dialogue box, OK is for committing changes and exiting the dialogue box.
im new as you know, and have only covered like 10 tutorials designing as you designed. Yep well, what I can say is that jumping to a new design and learning new sections and controls every video, for me I think its counter productive. I see what you are doing and think you're right to do the videos that way, but for me, I think maybe I should stay and practise the new options a little more before moving forwards. This program is a mind field. So much to learn that if I try to take it all in as the watched videos climb, personally I don't think I can. So when my new mouse arrives I am going back to practise. Thats just my views. I am also keeping notes of the commands and what you did. Great tutorials though. Really awesome.
Hi, James. I understand what you're getting at. It can be A LOT of information to absorb. I would suggest watching the next two days (#18 and #19). The introduction to user parameters may be helpful to you. Once you complete that, you may want to start focusing more specifically on surface modeling with my beginner surfacing playlists - bit.ly/surface-playlist Cheers, Kevin :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Right been out at work since 7am this morning. 2 customer vehicles fixed later and now its 8pm and im ready for Kevin and his dulcet tones. Bring it. Another video and more awesome knowledge.
Great work with the explanation between STL and OBJ files!! New to 3D printing, 3D modeling but you helped out tons!! I will definitely be reviewing back to your earlier videos very soon to help me more with Fusion 360!!!
Thanks, Jason! I'm happy to hear you found this tutorial helpful. Please don't hesitate to comment questions as you watch my other tutorials. Welcome to the world of CAD and 3D Printing. Cheers, Kevin :)
Don't have a model workspace. I understand it is difficult to keep up with changing versions, but it is frustrating when my version of Fusion 360 does not look like your version, so I am unable to follow along with you. I either can't find the button you click on or i have to pause the playback while I search for the button in a different location.
Thanks, David! I'm happy to hear this helped you out! To help me create more Fusion 360 content please subscribe and share my videos with others looking to learn Fusion 360 for free! Cheers, Kevin :)
I only learned Fusion 360 because I couldn't figure out how to turn an OBJ into an STP file lol. So I just started designing directly in Fusion, now I love using Fusion 360 and wouldn't have it any other way. So, it's probably a good thing I didn't see this video until now haha.
Hi, Jonny. You certainly made the right choice! Converting STL files can come in handy... but this doesn't always works, especially with very complex files. Glad you stumbled upon my videos. Cheers, Kevin :)
Mr Kevin- My comment/suggestion: could you add a noticeable "Click" to any mouse command? When you are making an extra point, it sometimes is hard to realize an action from voice dialogue sounds and the action being taken (sometimes I have to back up to see the connection action). It makes "following the bouncing ball" ... infinitely easier and a solid answer conformation of action taken. Thanks SO MUCH. On a personal note: This is the BEST tutorial series (and there are alot). and what makes it great, are..... 1) .....NO happy talk or flying off in obscure tangents (its distracting and counter productive). "Losing focus."!! 2) direct and to the point, and appropriate to the timeline of learning! (over-cooking leeds to dis-interest/most of us are OCD). (I'm all about connecting with the group ..but I don't need help getting knocked off course). 3)My display: from my perspective the video is proportionally adequate and the font as well. (moreover: you zoom in at the right time. (Needed for people who are quasi visual impaired or on a laptop or small display). 4) Speech: Clear/poignant/direct/concise and NOT over cooked. (short and sweet and informative). I've been a Journeyman Toolmaker/CNC Programmer/Application Eng for 35+yrs I've taught symposiums on Conversational programming and this was VERY PROFESSIONAL !!! (actually the best i've ever witness)! Great JOB young man !!! (Whoever you are) !!!
Thanks, Chris at OKF. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I'll be remaking this again (in a few weeks) to incorporate the new UI and the terminology and iconography changes. Cheers, Kevin :)
Thanks you. I really appreciate your hard work to create this tutorial videos. They are clear and good structured to make the learning process successfully

OriginalHotrodder - Thanks for subbing and commenting! I truly appreciate the kind words and as long as I have awesome viewers like you I will continue to make tutorials. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, CHO성진. Yep... you'll have to be cautious with how many faces you choose to merge at one single time. Fusion 360 can only process a handful. I usually aim for 10-15...and work in small chunks. Thanks again for your continued support! Cheers, Kevin :)

Thanks, Christos Vranos! Just so you're aware, I will be updating this at some point in the next few weeks to better reflect the new UI and the different workflow it has created for these processes. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, Victor. That's a great question. The short answer is: it depends. I have gotten some small head scans converted before. Ultimately, it depends on the number of mesh facets that make up the scan. If the number of facets is over 50k then you'll want to reduce it as demoed in the tutorial. If you're still having trouble with the reduction then check out Autodesk Meshmixer, which is also free. It was built for mesh files and can handle a significantly larger amount of mesh triangles. Cheers, Kevin :)
Thank you for putting this series up it has a lot of useful information in a format that is very clear and understandable What is your thoughts as to why fusion 360 doesn't make it easier to load a stl file and then have a simple button to convert it to a solid to edit it easier?
oldfarmhand - Thank you for watching and for commenting! That's a good question! I think it's a combination of Fusion 360 being so "new" (the product team has an ever-growing list of things to work on) and the fact that there are many other programs that can convert files in fewer steps. For example, Autodesk Meshmixer offers a lot more flexibility when working with meshes. The mesh workspace in Fusion is really a "new" idea for a CAD program and there is still a lot to be fleshed out. Cheers, Kevin :)
Thanks, La Flama Blanca! I really appreciate the kind words. It's probably because of how YT algorithms are giving more weight to content that has been on here for longer. However, everyone who enjoys my tutorials can help my sharing my videos and channel with others trying to learn Fusion 360 :D Cheers, Kevin :)
Glad it was helpful :) Just so you're aware, I do have an updated version of this video that you can find here: ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html I show more tips and tricks in there
This solution is great with the older version of Fusion. With the new upgrade, and (excuse me for saying) the "stupid menu" they've managed to make things more difficult and problematic to use the Patch Workspace. Now I have to "paint select" the triangles and go directly under Surface .. Modify .. Merge. There is no Patch! I'm merging 195 triangles together and it's completely frozen solid on me. Nearly 25 years in the tech trade - I simply do not understand how amazingly smart people take something that is awesome and working and turn it on its head and make it feel stupid!
Hi Andy. I do understand your frustration. The new update has broken some things in Fusion 360, but as far as I'm aware, none of the functionality with merging faces has changed. They've just changed the terminology and location of some of this process (as you've noted). As far as 195 faces locking up your F360...it may be due to the faces not all being on the same exact plane (even if they appear to be to the naked eye) or simply that it is too many for Fusion 360 to process at once. As an alternative, you can also try selecting one face and then hit the delete key. You have to make sure you're in the solid tab while you do this (not the surface tab). Fusion 360 will try to self merge the remaining faces as the result of you deleting the selected face. This process can sometimes produce better results than merging the faces, although it takes quite a bit longer. Cheers, Kevin :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Thanks Kevin. However, I also find that I have problems Paint selecting the triangles. If I begin the paint-selection process directly over the triangles that are on the same surface, only 1 triangle is selected. If I insist and drag the mouse, the entire model moves in the direction of the mouse pointer. To enable paint-selection to work as it should, I have to click and hold on the plain White space around the model and then drag the mouse over the surface at which time it begins to select multiple triangles. But I have no control over the paint action and triangles from all surfaces are painted in. I will give it another try from scratch and see if I can make it work. I'm saying this because I followed this exact tutorial with another model a few months ago, and was able to get the desired outcome in the older version of Fusion . Kindly excuse my earlier post if it appeared to be a rant.
@@AMTheTinkerer No worries... I understand your frustration. If you're able to share a link to a screencast. I would love to see the issue you're having...that way I can look out for any settings or things that may potentially be causing this. I haven't experienced any issues with the paint selection. Sounds like it could be due to the update creating some latency, or it could potentially be the specific STL file you're working with (if it's really big). Have you tried it with different STL files? If so, is the issue persistent throughout? Cheers, Kevin :)
I am using an obj. file. Following your directions I am not able to see a mesh drop down window. I can still select vertices and edges, (dont ask me how) but I would still like to make all the random vertices on one wall one solid vertices so that I can extrude one solid face.
Hi, Christianpatrickgalles Galles. For your convenience, I would recommend watching my latest version of this tutorial, as it aligns with the most recent UI - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html You will need to activate your Mesh workspace in your preferences. Always great videos. I have always had difficulties with curves, you glossed right over that - Is it no longer difficult or maybe I have been doing it wrong? Did you use any of the paid-for conversion features (mesh->BRep)
Hi Diego, be sure to check out the link in the pinned comment or description for a updated version of this video. It reflects the latest UI and maybe a bit more helpful :)
The other day, I tried exporting a 5mm-thick pentagram from Fusion 360 as an STL, which I sliced in Cura 3.1 at 100% density. However, the resulting print did not print as a 5mm-thick solid pentagram. Instead, only the perimeter wall printed 5mm high. Did I perhaps not extrude the entire pentagram to 5mm high properly in Fusion 360, or did I omit a step or two before attempting to export the pentagram as an STL?
Hi Edward, after reading through your question, it sounds like it could be either a file issue or a Cura settings issue. Could you share the link to your file so I can take a look? That will help me rule out it being an issue with your file. Share your public link as a reply to this comment. Here's a video explaining how to share a public link - ua-cam.com/video/2XrcrdV-8Ls/v-deo.html Then, please write a separate comment letting me know you've replied with a link because UA-cam flags most links and I don't always get notified. Cheers, Kevin :)
Thank you for your help. I have followed your instructions for making a file publicly accessible: a360.co/2JaMSqL To me, the pentagram looks ready to save as an STL, but perhaps there are certain parameters of which I am unaware that also need to be selected before saving as an STL.
Fusion 360 has changed it's UX ... for reasons noone knows ... so this video no longer matches the current product. Nice job AutoDesk ! There wasn't any problem with the previous UX ... and now this great video and all the knowledge from the previous UX is lost.
Hi Stuart. I will be re-doing this video in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I have created a video covering where all of these critical features have moved. You can watch that here - ua-cam.com/video/tuZzHcmFtg4/v-deo.html Cheers, Kevin :)
NOT so. The changes are to accommodate Autodesk customers to have uniformity in the UI across all the different software they offer. And this excellent tutorial is still valid and useful.
@@stevesnead2368 Thanks for sharing this, Steve. You make a very good point... a lot of hobbyists users forget that they're not the ones keeping the lights on at Autodesk. In all seriousness, the folks at Autodesk have a "master plan" for all of their products, and we as consumers don't always get to hear the reasons why they do certain things. Making the products more uniform is definitely something they've made known they're working on and definitely something that will be valuable for all users in the future. Thanks again. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, Jerome. You can import FBX files. You'll have to upload it to your data panel first, and then open the file from there. The important thing to note is that FBX files are built with a quad mesh that theoretically would be converted into a T-Spline. (Different than the triangular facets of STL files). If you import this and convert it directly into a BRep you may have to fill some open areas with Surface modeling tools (Surface tab). I would recommend watching my updated (2019) version of this video as I show some of the patching tricks - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html Cheers, Kevin :)
Cool, thanks! But I have a question. I need to merge the facets like you did at the end... however, as my geometry is complex, there are some distortions when i do it. Do you know another way I can do this?
This Video was very helpful, thank you for that! But I have one question: if I select the facets of the BREP-Model with the paint selection, the facets on the opposite side of the model are selectet too. How can I prevent this?
Hi, Tim. I'm glad you found this video to be helpful. You will need to go to "Select" dropdown > selection filters > uncheck "Select Through" Here's an image for you to reference - snipboard.io/vhxfEl.jpg Cheers, Kevin :)
Thanks, James! After you clean up those outer faces of the hooks with the "merge" command...you would simply need to select the face (or faces) and then hit the keyboard shortcut for "Q" for the Press Pull command. Then, you can extrude them out further to the desired length. Cheers, Kevin :)
This method only works for relatively simple parts. Anything with more than 5000 faces (triangles) will freeze fusion. Only two options you have, is to either reduce the number of vertices until your part basically looks like a blob, or, section it off into multiple smaller parts, convert to solid, and then join the pieces. This may also take quite a while if you're working with high resolution models / high vertex models as is typical of character / anatomical models
Hi Kevin , I have been learning from your tutorials and here is my problem. I designed a model shape to be used on my drone, I extruded it and saved it. Before Fusion closed down it asked if i wanted to save again I did and gave it a name. But, I say but, after 3d printing I need to go back and alter some of the measurements. Ok Thought it would be easy to do so. It has saved it but as a Mesh object, I wanted to open it with the timeline so I could alter parts of the build. So on my Fusion page I have left side column, say my Projects , that's were it saved also with the same file in my pics as that's were i wanted it as an stl file for cura What have I done wrong, will i be to change this mesh back to my workable piece as i spent a long time working on this Thanks very much Graham
Does this still work in the new Fusion 360? Patch doesn't exist, in the surfaces tab, the merge function doesn't let me select faces, then if I turn ON design history I can edit the mesh and select faces but merge isn't available if design history is on. Workflow has completely changed. Thanks again for all your videos.
Hi, seventyfive1. This process still works the terminology and location of things have just changed a bit. You can watch this video to see all of the critical changes - ua-cam.com/video/tuZzHcmFtg4/v-deo.html The "merge" command only shows up when you're in "direct modeling mode". Right-click on the top-level component (filename) in the Fusion 360 browser. Then, select "Do not capture design history" > click "continue". Then, you should see the "merge" command under the modify dropdown list in the "surface" tab. Here's a screenshot for reference - snipboard.io/drCGJw.jpg I'll have to redo this tutorial at some point to reflect the new changes. Cheers, Kevin :)
I Don;t think this was mentioned but you need to deselect "Select Through" under the selection filter menu.... this will stop faces being selected that are behind the face your working on!
@@ProductDesignOnline I also just figured out you have to start the paint selection for outside the model and then move over the faces. However it Error-ed with: Failed to stitch merge body. Any Idea why?
@@Wolf-3.5.9 How complex is your model? Can you share your file with me? This error is typically caused by meshes with A LOT of faces... and Fusion 360 doesn't like that. If there aren't too many faces, then the next thing causing an error is typically a fillet or another feature that is throwing something off that is hard to visually see. Cheers, Kevin :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Actually I am trying it on the same phone stand model you were using from Thingiverse. So it must be something I'm doing wrong. Thanks
@@Wolf-3.5.9 Gotcha. Can you provide some screenshots or a quick screen recording? That may help me catch something that is different than what I was doing. Cheers, Kevin :)
Blender is WAAAAAAY better for working with meshes. EDIT - I suppose I should add some context. Fusion has quirk of just not doing what I tell it sometimes, and that error rate exponentially increases when working with meshes. I feel blender excels where fusion lacks. Perhaps it will improve when it officially releases that feature.
I agree with you Robert. The only thing I'll add is that Fusion 360 is not trying to be a mesh modeler. Their intention is to have enough mesh capabilities to help with parametric workflows when using imported mesh data.
Thanks so much for this video. I'm converting Sketchup files to F360 and this really helps to get them to solids. I did get an error when I tried to use the Merge option under Modify drop down after select Brep faces using the Select/ Paint tool - any ideas? I tried just selecting 2 facets with the same error (Failed to Merge). I repeated using your step by step instructions ?? Thanks, Lyle
Hi Lyle, Double check that you don't have the "Select through" option checked in your Selection Filters (Select Dropdown > Slection Filters > Uncheck "Select Through"). If that is checked then it will be selecting faces on the other side. All faces have to be on the same plane in order to merge. It could also be likely that the faces appear on the same plane but they're slightly off. Let me know if that helps! Cheers, Kevin :)
Product Design Online Thanks, Kevin for the quick reply. I checked and I do have the “Faces only” as the only Selection filter. I did get it to work once when I only selected 2 facets but it then separated those 2 from the rest of the component! I think the problem is that I converted a Sketchup file by uploading it to Fusion 360, then I followed your steps to convert one component from the file to another design as a Brep. This component is a board with faces, sides, vortexes, edges etc. I’m going through your wood working videos now - great stuff!
@@c5auto Interesting... could be a number of problems, as Fusion 360 isn't pretty finicky with mesh files. It's too bad Sketchup can't export as STEP files. Glad you're enjoying the woodworking tutorials. You may have to rebuild the files in Fusion 360 ;) Cheers, Kevin :)
Very well made video, just what I needed. However, my Fusion 360 (Personal) version is 2.0.10564, and I am using a Mac iMac computer with macOS 10.14.6 . So, many commands you are teaching I cannot find in my version. Can you please tell which Fusion 360 are you using? Thanks.
Hi, Werner Herrmann. The Mesh workspace is still in preview mode, so you'll need to turn it on in your preference dialog. I've also created a newer version of this video that reflects the most recent updates. You can watch that here > ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html Cheers, Kevin :)
I'm having difficulty highlighting the faces using the Paint Selection tool. When I click and hold and drag, the whole component moves. I don't know if it's my settings somehow, or my laptop trackpad that's the cause of it. Any ideas? But... even when I select the faces one by one, and I Merge in the Patch workspace, nothing happens! I get a, "Failed to stitch merged body" error... Also... is there any way to know that the Select Face Priority is currently selected, other than checking the Selection Filters dropdown?
Hi, StepInIsrael. I'm not sure why your components would be moving. Make sure clear all commands by hitting the "escape" key on your keyboard before you try to use the paint selection. It may have been because of a previous command. One thing to double check is that you have the "Select through" selection filter turned off. It's likely that your faces won't merge because they're on different planes (it's selecting the faces on the backside). As far as I know, there is not a way to see what selection filters you have on without looking at the list (but this would be a good idea for an improvement). You could add keyboard shortcuts to each of the "selection filters," allowing you to hit the shortcuts to ensure you're on the correct selection type without having to view the dropdown list each time. Here's a video on creating custom keyboard shortcuts - ua-cam.com/video/gSgK5vEQJAw/v-deo.html Just so you're aware, a single-left-click on a vertex, edge or face of 3D geometry in the viewport selects the body. A double-left-click on 3D geometry in the viewport selects as a component. If you hod the CTRL (Windows) or CMD (macOS) key while clicking you can add more bodies or components to the selection. Cheers, Kevin :)
Need to be update for new upi. merging of faces it very different, need to use Base feature! thanks for all your work in these videos. I am learning a lot. used Onshape before. Many differences. THX. I'm a Patron.

Hey thanks for this series, it has been great learning! I uploaded and stl file, changed to not capturing the design history, but when I click on the Workspace, there are only Design, Render, Animation, Stimulation, Manufacture, and Drawing. (Instead of Sculp, Model... Like yours in the vid) Please clarify! Thanks
Hi, autman1223. The slicing software for 3D printers requires STL mesh files. Most files online on sites like thingiverse.com are mesh files because people exported it to print it themselves....and then uploaded the mesh file to save time. If you want non-mesh files you can search other sites, such as GrabCad.com Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, Dot Exe. This process works for .OBJ files as well. This video shows the most recent process with the latest UI - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html Cheers, Kevin :)
I do not have a "Mesh to Brep" option. What am I doing wrong? After researching, I thought I had to convert to an OBJ, but you say I don't. I hope that is true. I just need to know how to get that option (I took an image for you, but now way to post it)
Hi Gabriel, the first thing you'll have to do is turn off the design history. Did you right click on the top-level file on the browser and select "Do not capture design history"? Once design history is turned off you should be able to right click and see the "Mesh to Brep" option. Cheers, Kevin :)
While trying to merge faces, I am getting an error saying " Unable to stitch merge faces". Why does this happen? Is there any condition for faces to be merged?
Hi, Vishnu. Can you share the model you are trying to merge faces with? Fusion 360 has trouble handling very complex meshes. If your file is very complex there is a good chance that some of the faces are intersecting from the conversion (Mesh to BRep). It is only recommended to use the workflow in this video if you are converting small and fairly simple objects. If you try a large or complex object Fusion performance and stability will go downhill very fast. Cheers, Kevin :)
I must have a different version because nothing works like you say. But I was able to modify the stl file without turning into a solid. Maybe I should have looked for "modify an stl file" instead. I did learn some more about Fusion, thanks.
Hi, ProfessorM. What is your visual style set to? Head to your display settings at the bottom (Desktop icon) > Visual Style (flyout folder) then select > Shaded or Shaded with Visible Edges Only. Those are the two settings that I use throughout this course. Here are the other default settings that I use - productdesignonline.com/default-settings-for-fusion-360-tutorials/ Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi can you make new video? F360 changed a lot and mesh + patch got dissolved into options inside Design workspace and I though I was able to find the stl to brep function I can#t find the merge function from Patch.
Thank you for the great videos. Please please please UPDATE this video as there have been many changes to Fusion 360. I stumble through but many changes like no Patch menu and delete vs merge.
Hi, John. This Friday I will be releasing a video that shows all of the critical changes with the New UI. The goal of the video is to help ease the transition from the old to new UI, making a lot of the older tutorials still very relevant and easy to follow (as none of the actual tools are changing its really just terminology and placement). I'll also eventually be updating popular videos, such as this one. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hey Kevin!I hope you are doing good! I got some problems trying to merge the surfaces of the object. My fusion stopped working and i needed to reboot the program. My computer has relatively good specs, do you think i'm doing something wrong or is just a performance bottleneck? Thanks in Advance! Samuel
Fusion can only handle up to about 40,000 triangle facets. If you have more than that then you'll want to split the model into sections before trying to convert each individual section. Check out the description of this video where I link to a newer video that talks about some of this in more detail :)
Great video! However I've tried the steps but I'm unable to merge faces, keeps giving me the error "unable to stitch merge faces". Any idea why? Perhaps it's the new f360 versioning..
Hi Jeremy, There are two main reasons the merges usually don't work. 1) Merging too many faces at once so that F360 can't handle it all. Try merging fewer. Typically no more than 20-30. 2) The faces selected are not all in the same plane. Make sure to use the "Select Faces Priority" option from the selection filters. Also, double check your selection filters that the "through" option isn't checked. I've seen users inadvertently select faces on the other side which prohibited this from working. The most recent updates are all visual and don't effect any of this functionality. Let me know how it goes! Cheers, Kevin :)
My main complaint is this was not available when I spent money on a book and online course! You do a great job delivering and explaining the information. I don't really regret my online course choice, but you definitely cover some things that I have yet to learn. Awesome...I will go through all your vids as time allows...Subbed and liked!
In the new mesh tools there is a "separate" command in the Modify dropdown. It will automatically determine the two bodies (or there are some other options to define it).
Can this be done in the 'startup version'? Many of the menu items you refer to do not exist in the 'startup version'. Of particular importance "mesh space" doesn't exist. I can import an STL. and I can convert it to BREP, but I have not been able to due anything to combine the triangles, which pretty much takes all the utility out of being able to convert the model to begin with.
Hi Dave. This can all be done with the Startup version. Please watch my latest version of this tutorial that covers the topic along with the new UI and a few added tricks and tips - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html The Mesh workspace has been moved to a tab within the Design workspace, as shown in the video. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, Barbaros. The "Mesh Workspace" is still a preview feature (in beta testing). Therefore, you'll have to activate the "preview" version in your preference menu. Click your username in upper right-hand corner > preferences > preview > toggle on the Mesh Preview. Here's a reference image for your convenience - snag.gy/L3p4Rf.jpg Please note, you'll have to restart your Fusion 360 in order for the changes to take effect. Cheers, Kevin :)
I downloaded a obj file from grabcad and tried your method to make a solid body but when I merge a hole forms where I selected the faces do you have any ideas of what is wrong?
Hi, Emalan. This usually this happens when the original STL/OBJ file has a small hole (unnoticeable to the naked eye) and when Fusion tries to stitch everything together it omits that area where the hole is. I'd recommend trying it again, this time selecting a smaller amount of faces to merge. If the issue still persists then it's likely that the original file does, in fact, have a small hole. OBJ files seem to have this issue more than others, as they're typically derived from 3D-scanners, so if you can get the same file in STL format then that conversion may have better results. Cheers, Kevin :)
@@ProductDesignOnline much appreciated, just got some idea from the fusion 360 website they said must use mesh programs to do some stuff gonna try them tomorrow thanks so much for your help

The current version of Fusion 360 as of 04/15/2020 has a considerably different MESH interface that is within Design and takes considerable research to be able to accomplish what you very nicely show in this video. im new as you know, and have only covered like 10 tutorials designing as you designed.

Hi, Jonny. You certainly made the right choice! Converting STL files can come in handy... but this doesn't always works, especially with very complex files. Glad you stumbled upon my videos. Cheers, Kevin :)
Mr Kevin-
My comment/suggestion: could you add a noticeable "Click" to any mouse command?

What about 3D scanned bodies? Can they be converted to workable solids? Thanks for your nice tutorial
Thank you for putting this series up it has a lot of useful information in a format that is very clear and understandable
What is your thoughts as to why fusion 360 doesn't make it easier to load a stl file and then have a simple button to convert it to a solid to edit it easier?
oldfarmhand - Thank you for watching and for commenting!

Glad it was helpful :)
Just so you're aware, I do have an updated version of this video that you can find here: ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html
I show more tips and tricks in there
This solution is great with the older version of Fusion.
@@ProductDesignOnline Thanks Kevin. I will try to record something over the weekend and publish a link for you to look at.

Here's a video explaining how to share a public link - ua-cam.com/video/2XrcrdV-8Ls/v-deo.html
Then, please write a separate comment letting me know you've replied with a link because UA-cam flags most links and I don't always get notified. Cheers, Kevin :)
Thank you for your help. I have followed your instructions for making a file publicly accessible:
a360.co/2JaMSqL
To me, the pentagram looks ready to save as an STL, but perhaps there are certain parameters of which I am unaware that also need to be selected before saving as an STL.

NOT so. The changes are to accommodate Autodesk customers to have uniformity in the UI across all the different software they offer.

@@stevesnead2368 Thanks for sharing this, Steve. You make a very good point... a lot of hobbyists users forget that they're not the ones keeping the lights on at Autodesk. is a fbx file considered a MESH? or is your workflow applicable to fbx files?
I would recommend watching my updated (2019) version of this video as I show some of the patching tricks - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html

good video but how do you extrude the hook part of the holder. The part that holds the phone and make the gap larger for a thicker phone.

So on my Fusion page I have left side column, say my Projects , that's were it saved also with the same file in my pics as that's were i wanted it as an stl file for cura
What have I done wrong, will i be to change this mesh back to my workable piece as i spent a long time working on this
Thanks very much

Does this still work in the new Fusion 360? Patch doesn't exist, in the surfaces tab, the merge function doesn't let me select faces, then if I turn ON design history I can edit the mesh and select faces but merge isn't available if design history is on. Workflow has completely changed. Thanks again for all your videos.
Hi, seventyfive1. This process still works the terminology and location of things have just changed a bit. You can watch this video to see all of the critical changes - ua-cam.com/video/tuZzHcmFtg4/v-deo.html
The "merge" command only shows up when you're in "direct modeling mode". Right-click on the top-level component (filename) in the Fusion 360 browser. Then, select "Do not capture design history" > click "continue". Then, you should see the "merge" command under the modify dropdown list in the "surface" tab. Here's a screenshot for reference - snipboard.io/drCGJw.jpg
I'll have to redo this tutorial at some point to reflect the new changes.

Hi Lyle,
Double check that you don't have the "Select through" option checked in your Selection Filters (Select Dropdown > Slection Filters > Uncheck "Select Through"). If that is checked then it will be selecting faces on the other side. All faces have to be on the same plane in order to merge. It could also be likely that the faces appear on the same plane but they're slightly off.
Let me know if that helps! Cheers, Kevin :)
Product Design Online
Thanks, Kevin for the quick reply.
You may have to rebuild the files in Fusion 360 ;)
Cheers, Kevin :)
Thanks.

Here's a video on creating custom keyboard shortcuts - ua-cam.com/video/gSgK5vEQJAw/v-deo.html
Just so you're aware, a single-left-click on a vertex, edge or face of 3D geometry in the viewport selects the body. A double-left-click on 3D geometry in the viewport selects as a component. If you hod the CTRL (Windows) or CMD (macOS) key while clicking you can add more bodies or components to the selection. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hey thanks for this series, it has been great learning!
I uploaded and stl file, changed to not capturing the design history, but when I click on the Workspace, there are only Design, Render, Animation, Stimulation, Manufacture, and Drawing. (Instead of Sculp, Model... Like yours in the vid)
Please clarify! Thanks

Why are all the files online mesh files in the first place ? What program is putting them out ?
Hi, autman1223. The slicing software for 3D printers requires STL mesh files. Most files online on sites like thingiverse.com are mesh files because people exported it to print it themselves....and then uploaded the mesh file to save time. If you want non-mesh files you can search other sites, such as GrabCad.com

Is it possible to convert a simple .OBJ model into a solid body that you can freely edit in Fusion like a .STL model?
Hi, Dot Exe. This process works for .OBJ files as well. This video shows the most recent process with the latest UI - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html

I do not have a "Mesh to Brep" option. What am I doing wrong?
After researching, I thought I had to convert to an OBJ, but you say I don't. I hope that is true. I just need to know how to get that option
(I took an image for you, but now way to post it)
Hi Gabriel, the first thing you'll have to do is turn off the design history. Did you right click on the top-level file on the browser and select "Do not capture design history"? Once design history is turned off you should be able to right click and see the "Mesh to Brep" option. Cheers, Kevin :)
Following instructions lol sorry about that
@@gabrielcersonsky1486 no worries!

Different English subtitle files for your UA-cam. Then you can translate it into Korean using Google Translate and listen.

Hi Jeremy,
There are two main reasons the merges usually don't work.
@@ProductDesignOnline hi Kevin, I should probably recheck that the "through" option isn't checked.. Thanks Kevin!!

how do I split a body afterwards into different bodies so I can give different polygon groups different materials and appearances?
In the new mesh tools there is a "separate" command in the Modify dropdown. It will automatically determine the two bodies (or there are some other options to define it).
Can this be done in the 'startup version'? Many of the menu items you refer to do not exist in the 'startup version'. Of particular importance "mesh space" doesn't exist.
I can import an STL. and I can convert it to BREP, but I have not been able to due anything to combine the triangles, which pretty much takes all the utility out of being able to convert the model to begin with.
Hi Dave. This can all be done with the Startup version. Please watch my latest version of this tutorial that covers the topic along with the new UI and a few added tricks and tips - ua-cam.com/video/pgWWVcM5YJY/v-deo.html
The Mesh workspace has been moved to a tab within the Design workspace, as shown in the video.

Whats the difference between a body and components and why do you use what?

Hi, At ver: 2.0.5688 I couldn't see Mesh option at design submenu.. How can I do that? Regards
Hi, Barbaros. The "Mesh Workspace" is still a preview feature (in beta testing). Therefore, you'll have to activate the "preview" version in your preference menu. Click your username in upper right-hand corner > preferences > preview > toggle on the Mesh Preview. Here's a reference image for your convenience - snag.gy/L3p4Rf.jpg
