ABC's The Money Maze with Nick Clooney Tribute, "Tickler"

  • This video collage that I made is from the short-lived game show, "The Money Maze" that aired on ABC from December 23, 1974 to June 20, 1975.
    The host was Nick Clooney.
The theme is called "Tickler" by Charles Fox (thank you Dave Volsky). This was a musical cue used on the show (thank you 2005dave for the correction).
The pilot (titled The Moneymaze) and at least one of the 135 episodes from the series exist in ABC's archive. Like with most other daytime game shows on the networks other than CBS from that era, the tapes were erased after broadcast for reuse due to their great expense at the time.
The pilot exists among tape traders and a small clip of the show aired in 2004 when Chuck Barris and George Clooney (Nick Clooney's son) were promoting Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Another 1975 episode, recorded on an early home VCR by artist Andy Warhol, exists at the Paley Center for Media.

THE MONEY MAZE (ABC) was one of my all-time favorite game shows when I was all of seven years old!! (I was born in 1967 and so I'm 50 years old now.) I'd always look forward to watching this and other shows like it such as SPLIT SECOND on ABC, THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES on NBC, and THE PRICE IS RIGHT on CBS during my days off from school--like during school holidays or when I was home sick. I personally liked everything about MAZE--especially the "$10,000 Dash" bonus round. I've ALWAYS had the theme from MAZE stuck in my mind since my childhood!!! And this was the first time (May 18, 2018) since 1975 that I've heard it--and the first time I've ever heard the whole theme!! Thank you lots, Stratman '78 for posting this!! I must say, though, that I sometimes kinda wish they'd revive THE MONEY MAZE someday. That would be GREAT!! Though it's a pity the original series was wiped. AUGH!!! I just hope George Clooney realizes how great a man his father is! I've ALWAYS had a special place in my heart for Nick Clooney!!! :-) :-)

I remember one particular episode where the husband was in the maze, and his wife had gotten him to find the "1" and three of the zeroes.. The clock was rapidly running out, and the husband had come out one side of the maze and stopped by the "birthday cake" button (that stopped the clock); the wife was screaming at him to keep going, but the husband had a look on his face as if to say "screw it"; he hits the button, they win $1,000, and Clooney could not stop laughing..

Mike Shaver, the Record Saver hey, at least $1,000 was better than nothing at all.

At least he wasn't like a moron husband named Warren, who I remember well. Warren the first time hit a couple zeros and came out WITHOUT HITTING THE "1" so that meant they won NOTHING! Nick was in a state of dumbfounded shock. The NEXT time Warren went in, he hit the "1" first then a zero and came OUT so that they had winnings of (as Nick then intoned) TEN BUCKS! The audience then serenaded Warren with the most sarcastic applause I have ever heard in my life and it's stayed with me even though I was only six when I saw it.

@@epaddon You know, I hope you checked out Nick's interview on the subject. As it turned out, the wives were *_pissed_* if they lost in the maze.

1:14 and the very beginning were the pieces of music used while the people were running through that maze, I believe...

  • @TimothyMischka
    @TimothyMischka 8 років тому +1

HBO ended up using the music in the early 80s for their series "Race for the Pennant", which was their baseball equivalent to Inside the NFL. I didn't know it was used for a game show!

Out of pure curiosity (coupled with bad weather boredom on a Sunday) I did some hunting around and found there are assorted short clips of The Money Maze out there, but the challenge is getting in touch with the owners of these clips. All of them are on ancient equipment (read - AMPEX) so a lot of conversion would have to be done. Remember, most of this type of equipment outputs on 300 ohm twin lead! It's that ancient!

Where or where does someone find this kind of stuff? I know people (like myself) who own old audio and tape machines to play those ancient recordings.

There's $1,000,000 at stake each time our audience shouts...5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO! Welcome to the magical mystery of the Moneymaze! And now, here's our star, the master of the Moneymaze, Megan Batoon!

One million dollars would probably take up the better part of a whole half-hour episode of MAZE to try and win in a single "million dollar dash", Kasey. Besides, I don't think, even today, that TV production companies or networks could afford to give out $1,000,000 every day if they tried. LOL!! BTW, Kasey. Is there anyone in your family named "Travis?" Because I went to school for many years with a guy named Travis Westbrook in La Mesa, California. Just wondering. :-)

ABC unfortunately erased every episode of The Money Maze, meaning it will NOT be seen in reruns, the only way to see episodes are if someone has episodes recorded from the original broadcast. There is a series episode on UA-cam

Uh, three more partial episodes were found in 2008, I believe dug up in someone's home that had an early monster-sized VCR (back when the cartridges were by AMPEX or something like that). The only reason I know this is because I know the person who found them. When I watched the tape I remembered this show. And that famous line "Let's go to the maze!"

Great video. A discussion in The Game Show Forum says a tv network in France is getting to revive The Money Maze. When asked for a comment, the original producer, Ron Greenberg, jokingly said the idea of reviving the Maze was nice - after 35 years of waiting. I liked Nick Clooney, but he was a bit off base inserting himself into the Jack Abramoff scandal. He could have stuck up for George's right to make jokes without going off on his own political tangent.

Loved this game show. I was lucky to see that shiw @ the deadly 3:00 CST time slot. Some ABC affiliates didn't have it (WFAA-8; Dallas) while some did (KTRK-13; Houston),
As Vicki Lawrence would call it, The Monkey Maze! (LOL)

The person is about 1500 miles away from me and is very reclusive. He has a lot of vintage video clips that I suspect are one-of-a-kind. Original Carson, many live TV performances, etc. That said, good luck getting them out of him. I remember the AMPEX unit - it was a reel-to-reel unit that used tape like a movie rather than the cassette cartridge you and I know. It was also black and white. Sorry.

@devares2006 I've posted about this - there are actually a number of short clips out there, but you're at the mercy of trying to get them from their owners. There used to be some "game show exchange" areas before GSN became popular, but they have pretty much dried up. A few people with pre-VHS era tape machines have clips, and will only be able to recover them if their equipment is still working. I know one person, but he won't part with his clips.
