Sowing Aubergines

  • Aubergines are a warm climate crop that need to be grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel in most Irish or UK gardens. It might seem odd to start them off in February when it’s so cold but they need as much of our short summers as possible to ripen so we need to start them off early.
    Let's sow!
    1. Get your aubergine seeds, in this case ‘Black Beauty’!
    2. Fill a small pot with seed compost and gently tamp down.
    3. Sow seeds and cover with 1.5cm compost.
    4. Don't forget to add your seed label.
    5. Water well with fine spray.
    6. Place in a propagator or on a warm south-facing windowsill at a temperature of about 20˚C. They should germinate in 7 - 14 days.
I’m covering with a little plastic bag to keep the moisture in and will be placing on a window sill in my kitchen. Once the seedlings have come up, I will remove the bag and let the seedlings grow for 2 weeks before pricking out the seedlings and transplanting to separate pots. Then I'll pop them in a propagator or on a heat bench, they will die in cold temperatures.
Stay tuned for more! Why not grow along with us?! 😉
