- There was a time when the Police wanted to draw some attention through a feud. However, when they tried to instigate a dispute with Rush, they missed the press they desired since the Canadian icons didn’t respond as expected. Let’s take a closer look at this rare incident to see how Rush ignored the Police.

Nearly a 50 year career...not 1 single misstep. The epitome of class. God I love RUSH.
Yes 100%- hard to find today not only in bands - but people in general...
And now... It's over.
@@Mike-jv4rz totally!
The closest thingy o a misstep was Alex Lifeson getting pushed down the stairs by some cops arresting his son. They were both pretty drunk from what I remember
I remember the documentary they released some years back when Kiss was talking about how there was groupies just lined up i the hallway of their shared hotel and Rush wasn't partying down or anything - committed to their wives or gf's - which is almost impossible to think about - but they earned their way into our ears - they didn't grow up in the big cities with big music connections - they defied all odds - when COS commercially failed - they knew it was good - and doubled down - Rush is the most human trio to ever play - a flawless biography and 50 years of rocking out - that's unheard of..
Copeland and Peart became close like brothers and Copeland ended up being one of the very few that the notoriously private Peart let into his "close circle". He was one of the last people to spend time with Neil before he passed away. RIP Professor.
What happened?
Makes sense that they'd be friends. Peart's the best, and Copeland's become a drum historian, of sorts. Love 'em both.
@@cesarregalado3420Peart died in 2020, he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer five years beforehand.
He had a glioblastoma brain cancer that could not be operated on. It’s just terrible. He is why I play drums today
Of course, Rush was a class act.
Neil Peart loved The Police. He included Reggae in songs like Spirit Of Radio and New World Man because of their style.
And Stuart Copeland was a good friend of Neil's.
Digital Man is another good one.
Neil didn't write music just lyrics.
I've always considered "Vital Signs" the only song on which Rush sounds more like someone else (in this case, The Police). But that's not a bad thing because not only is "Vital Signs" fantastic, there simply is no such thing as a bad Rush song.
@@davidstout4826
I beg to differ. So many well known artists have stated than Neil was probably the best at literally ''making music'' with all of the available drums, cymbals and other gear like cow bells of different tonalities, temple blocks, tubular bells and so forth in his kit and of course, it is easy to imagine why he personally designed all of his kits throughout his long career specifically to that effect and kept adding on to it. He didn't dwell on being a master percussionist per say but the percussion aspect of his delivery was certainly what made his art so damn full and often times mesmerizing. So many Rush songs pivot around the sound and feel of his drumming. There was never any monotony in anything he played which is why A LOT of listeners often focused more on his drumming instead of the rest. So YES, Neil essentially wrote music because everything about his delivery WAS musical.
Rush - Always a class act.
yes. wouldn't have expected anything different from RUSH.
Two immensely talented and legendary power trios. One consisted of egos, tempers, tension, and juvenile behavior (like getting into literal fistfights with each other during interviews). The result: they couldn't even make it a single decade before disbanding. And when they briefly reunited 20+ years later, they still couldn't stand each other. Rush, on the other hand, was built on a foundation of friendship, trust, loyalty, equality (a 3-way split on all prosperity), and lasted FOUR decades, which included a multi-year struggle with the darkest of tragedies from which they emerged more popular and respected than ever before. While The Police did admit it was all just to generate publicity, mad props to the Professor and his built-in bullshit detector.
That's not true that they couldn't stand each other when they reunited. All three of them have discussed this to one degree or another.....their arguments are about music and how to play songs, not about their personal friendship. Both Andy and Stewart explain this in detail in some of their UA-cam interviews. As Stewart puts it....":Sting is quiet and deep, and I am loud and shallow"....their approaches to playing songs cause friction, not because they hate each other.
@@TK-ec5bv I never said The Police hated each other, but the friction brought on by their differing approaches to performance and material is another issue Rush never had to contend with. Sure, there was a period when Alex and Geddy had a back-and-forth over the increasing presence of keyboards, but never - aside from Neil's tragic period - was the band in danger of breaking up, especially due to in-fighting.
You also have to understand who raised these musicians from Canada. Strong parents who wanted what their kids wanted. Specifically Geddy's mom who was a single mom after her husband and fellow camp survivor passed away. Those parents deserve a medal. It is apparent in that these kids turned into grown adult gentlemen and stayed there.
I am a huge Rush fan, but Copeland is a very underrated drummer.
His name does not come up in "legendary drummer" discussions nearly enough.
Not to mention that he's probably the most unique, original drummers of the 80's.
As a word...under rated is very over rated.
Why do people say under rated to describe musicians at the peak of their craft???
@@brucemcdonald1114 underappreciated by many..fact
Underrated? Not a chance.
Rush wanted to play music. It's not about ego. This is what made them great.
yes, that's true, but The Police were the other great 3 piece rock band who were all just as talented musicians.. with an ego.
@@harryhondo1013 funny how Rush seemed to be friends even up to last concert. A rarity. The police acted like they hated each other. Of course, I don't know how it was like with them as a band so I can't say that as truth.
Silence is Golden.
And that's why Rush is my favorite band so far above them all.
Rush are typical Canadians. Living next to the US means Canadians often have to take the high road.
LOVE both bands, more so than anyone that will make a comment...Two of the greatest Trios in Music history...
Yes, I’m a fan of both. I’m now also a fan of new trio The Warning, who are completely different again. We’ll have to see how far they go.
what about CREAM....
Neil loved GINGER....
@@volpeverde6441 Ginger is a better drummer, technically, than Neil...Ginger Baker's Air Force, is some Killer Jazz! And Cream is another Monster Trio...:)
I saw RUSH warmup KISS in 1975... became my favorite band that night. Never missed a concert tour up to their retirement in 2015.
I wouldn't want to be Peter Criss going on stage as the headliner after Neil Peart ! That must have been so cool, all the fireblasts and light and screaming and hype can only take you so far, most people know that bands are supposed to be about musicianship first.
Sounds to me like Rush gave this the attention it deserved..
none.
This would be an interesting video if it included some details like what was said by the Police.
truly a stupid video! CLICK BAIT?
I know. Not well written. Short on information.
There's a ton of crossover fans of both bands, so it's good that this supposed friction was nipped in the bud
Stewart and Neil were often seen riding their road bicycles together on the bike path from Santa Monica to Mahattan Beach. Could you imagine walking along and two of the greatest drummers of all time just ride by?
I’d pass out from fanboy disease. Lol.
No wonder they attacked Rush, Sting was in the band. I love that Sir Patrick Stewart brought him down to earth during the filming of Dune. Sting told him that he played in a band and Stewart asked which one, to which he replied 'The Police.' And Stewart then asked him 'oh, you play in a police band?' Priceless.
Just makes me appreciate Copeland all the more. We all make mistakes when we are young and owning them makes us adults.
Saw an interview where he talks about the loss of Peart and Hawkins and you know it's from the heart.
Copeland is one of the greatest drummers of all time. Peart is THE greatest drummer of all time.
both are equally incredible; stewart does things not many drummers can do
@safelyanonymous5717 the difference is Peart was more creative
@@davibrass I wouldn't say that. Neil had more arsenal in his kit, but Stewart was amazingly creative with his hi-hat and cymbal work.
@@harryhondo1013 Copeland is a Legend
"Things could be worse,I could be Sting! Ozzy Osbourne.
There is a reason why people in the music industry especially those in bands called Neil "Yoda" the all wise....the man was a true legend
Copeland was just kidding around. He’s also a nice guy. Most all Rush fans like the Police also.
Yeah, I definitely love both. As a teenager learning guitar in the 80s, Alex Lifeson had the biggest influence on me and so I listened to county hours of Rush, but I also liked Andy Summers a lot... Both bands were phenomenon in their own way.
I'm so proud and grateful to have them in my life....
I think Rush, growing up in relatively safe and prosperous Toronto, Ontario, made little sense of the Police. Their baiting was a joke.
But what did the Police actually say? How did they criticise Rush? Did they actually have a point (at least sort of) or were they completely making stuff up?
Never did like the Police.
Many bands threw aspersions against them. Metallica, all the girl bands. Metallica, much to their credit came out and supported them. Hammet especially. He , I believe loved ALEX'S guitar playing.
How can you hate these guys? They were always a class act. I don't remember them uttering a disparaging word against any other musicians. They used a broad array of influences in their music [ respectfully].
God, I miss them.
Oh yeah, rolling stone magazine, was the only thing they spoke down about. A nothing rag that's good for a paraquettes cage, for it's droppings. Long live RUSH.
RFFR.
A friend has RS covers from day one plastered to the ceiling of his guest house. I lay in bed there and remember reading those mags cover to cover. It wasn't always cage worthy. But, they did morph into something different.
Rolling Stone magazine is a joke. They have Lifeson ranked 98th out of the 100 greatest of all time guitarists. They ranked Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols and Bruce Springsteen higher lol. Hilarious 😂 Exit Stage Left is my favorite Rush lp and Alex Lifeson shreds on it. That live version of LA Villa Strangiato is still phenomenal 41 years later.
Coming from punk roots The Police had to bash anything remotely proggy. But we all grew up and shook hands like adults.
RUSH way greater then the Police, absolutely no comparison, start with the futuristic, philosophical, imaginery, classical, even the profound and not to mention the incredible drum and percussion setup of Peart, and thundering Bass and high vocal chords of Geddy and the sophistication, classical riffs of Alex Lifeson. Not to mention these guys stuck together, whereas the Police, never got along, Sting persuing his Own interests....see ya,!!!! RUSH 4ever!!!! Closer to the heart, they were!!!! The fair well to Kings!!!!
The Police faded away fast.
@@markusantonio4866 They'd accomplished everything they wanted to and called it a day.
Why comparing both different bands lol The only thing they have in common with each other is great drummers. I blame the Sting for the disbanding of the Police, but I love both bands. In the sense of the sound I never treated The Police as a classical rock band bc they blended some others genres into their music, as for Rush I see them as a good classical rock band. As for drummers, Neil and Steward were friends later jn life, and Neil also was inspired by the Police as you may not know, so by bashing them, you also criticize Neil. And the discussion about greatest someone is stupid and immature bc you shouldn’t listen music for best sth, music is a feeling, if those musicians would look into music like you, to be the best, we would not have such a great songs. It is stupid for me to critisize one great band bc of another great band to feel better. I can like idk Beyonce and Iron Maiden at the same time bc I like variety in music and that’s fine, and you sound like someone who is only listening to one band for the whole life lol
RUSH 4 THE REST OF THE ETERNITY 🤘🤘🤘
Yeah.... I will be sad when eternity ends. ;0)
I grew up a huge fan of both, so I can't lose!
Sounds like something
Rush would do
Your video is incomplete. What did The Police say about Rush?
what couldmthey say. rush said we're boring.
Rush: Always a class act. As far as the police: well who gives a shit
Pretty sure it was Sting's idea to start the beef.
It doesn't surprise me that Rush didn't take the bait. They've always been bigger than that.
I think Rush were used to this kind of thing. After all the band UFO use to tease them relentlessly.
RushON4Ever!
Does anyone know what The Police criticized about Rush?
Lions dont give attention to rats. Or Canadians are too nice. Either way, RIP Rush. Loved and still love you. ✌️🇨🇦♥️
I remember a time that some magazine voted sing as the worst lyricist of all time and I think Neil was like number two and I think I remember Neil Peart coming to his defense
The fans would say otherwise.
I think Sting was an awesome lyricist. Invisible Sun, King of Pain, Spirits of the Material World were songs in which tge words had real meaning.
Yeah, all those music writers definitely had a preference for "ooh, baby' lyrics about screwing and getting high rather than intelligent lyrics that made you actually think and feel real emotions (rather than have mere urges).
Oh they clapped back. Compare record sales 😉
Maybe this was something in the US. Rush wasn't popular outside the US/North America.
What was said?
What did The Police say about Rush??? I'm surprised it's not even mentioned in the video
You never revealed what Copeland criticized Rush for??? What did he say about Rush?
Sounds like Police were jealous....
I doubt that especially since they were considered the biggest band in the world by 1983. And many thought the Police were the other extremely talented 3 piece band.
I was hoping for a few examples...
Stewart must not have know how wise the professor is. Should have picked a different group to pull that stunt with like Phil Collins. lol. You don’t get the title “Professor” from being the world’s best drummer.
Sting isn’t anything close of a bassist as Geddy!
You can’t really compare the two bands because the we’re two very different bands… They set out to accomplish two different things
Oh jesus... I thought that you meant the actual POLICE!
Children vs Adults (at the time).
What was going on with pearts schnozole?
This video should have been 10 seconds long.
The narration sounds like it was written by a high schooler. Plus the voice of the person doing it is really annoying.
What are you talking about they were good friends!!
Rush is Rush !!!!
Rush >>>> Police
a lot of 80's Rush was Police inspired (AND IN MY OPINION) sound better than The Police.
Especially Vital Signs, name a Police song better than Vital Signs
Massage in a Hotel? ;)
Spirits of The Material Radio? Every Limelight You Take? How about the one Andy Summers sang, Mother? But seriously, I prefer Rush big-time, but The Police were great too. Nothing released over the last 25 years compares to either band.
That seems extraordinarily juvenile to attempt to gain publicity by slagging more popular musicians...what were they thinking? The best publicity comes from being the best musicians & songwriters. Ironically, when Rush had just made it big, they were interviewed as a group, when asked what music they liked, they cited the Police. They had way too much class to sink to that level. In the end, Rush remains hugely popular, and the Police, largely forgotten. I liked both bands, but Rush much more. This story makes me lose respect for Police.
Copeland is a cool guy. The other guys are not.
The Police lasted for what, 5 years? Rush is on another plane of musical genius and accomplishment.
The Police broke up at the height of their career.
While I definitely prefer Rush as Alex Lifeson was my main influence on guitar as a teenager and their musicianship was just otherworldly, I think highly of The Police and their 5 albums were great. 8 from Rush was enough for me and after longtime producer Terry Brown left / fired, I lost interest in the direction of heavy synth they were heading into. Plus, I gotta hear some other artists and couldn't commit to another 10 albums.
Not the slightest bit relevant, but man does Stuart Copeland have a giant chin. It's absolutely huge.
Maybe he is related to Jay Leno? 🤣
Information is great thank you. The narration sucks thought. Thank you.
I know Peart at least was a big fan of The Police. Listening to them and other new wave bands on CFNY in the morning is what inspired the lyrics for Spirit of Radio.
Rush all the way!!!!
I love both bands and i have all of their records. The Police loves Rush, Rush loves the Police. But im just gonna say The Police doesnt hold a candle to Rush in terms of music and musicianship.
The police drummer is always hitting the rims I think he needs better glasses
Copeland was and probably still is an asshole and one of the best drummers of all time. Hitting the rims is part of his style of playing.
World class 3 masters of their instruments vs a very mediocre group, sting was the only talent, and he knew it and went solo. This is not surprising at all.
Copeland is not a real talent ?
@@garyh987 Often overlooked as he wasn't flashy. I was guilty of this with Copeland and Ringo. Ignorance of youth...
Rush is my favorite band, but that’s a ridiculous comment. The Police were an incredible band and their influence is all over the early 80’s Rush albums from Permanent Waves to Grace Under Pressure. Alex thought very highly of Andy Summers’ guitar work and Stewart Copeland was and still is a fantastic drummer. Sting was never the same with his solo career after he broke up The Police. Copeland and Summers took his songs to the next level with their playing.
@@greengrass1072 just a comment I never asked for agreement, regardless of what Rush thought of the police apart from Sting they were mediocre.
Your comment is total dogshit. All three of the police are tremendous musicians at the top of their craft! You evidently do not play guitar otherwise you would know how hard some of Andy Summers parts are to play. Geez ...
Musical preferences aside, nobody can deny that The Police are head & shoulders above Rush in the songwriting department ... it's not even close.
They're two different styles of music. Both bands wrote great songs.
You got that backwards. The Police is a good band, but their songwriting, although catchy, is bubblegum compared to the meaty sirloin steak Neil Peart wrote.
@@OriginalMergatroid The Police wrote some fantastic songs, including great lyrics. If memory serves me correctly, Peart was a fan of the Police. I believe they influenced his song writing. Ironically, their biggest hit (Every Breath You Take), was thought to be rubbish by the band, aside from Summer's (great) guitar riff.
@@pillsareyummy Yes, I agree, they are a really good band, but there lyrics are not Peart level.
@@OriginalMergatroid Two different writing styles. Sting's lyrics were very poetic and steeped in metaphor. Peart's lyrics, although beautifully written were more colloquial. Peart had a clear message in most of his lyrics, he had something to say. Sting's lyrics were more philosophically artistic, Peart's were more utilitarian.
Police slime. As usual. Rush nothing but class. As usual.
I saw Police twice and Rush only once and I have to say I enjoyed The Police more than Rush in concert !
Is that because you liked The Police more to begin with, or their live sound? I was only 12 when The Police ended, so never got to see them in concert, but did see Rush a few tears later in '87. It was a great show, but I missed their prime period of 1981. Exit Stage Left would've been the show I'd rather have gone to.
rush had class police never
What a non-story. What a waste of time - click bait.
Clap back😂
how tacky
It’s a waste of time talking about these band members! 80 some percent of bands are garbage, bubblegum, babysitting money bands. I knew so many young girls (years ago) that were dragged away by men like this and their lives were ruined.
Just because the police have more bubble gum hits no one's going to tell me they're more talented musically because that they're not!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lighten up francis..
I'm not even a big fan of Rush but I prefer them over the Police any day of the week. I don't REALLY know why I disliked the Police so much. They just never did it for me at all.
For THAT era, I would take XTC over any other band.
I love the Police and Rush. "Dear God sorry to disturb you but ..."
Rush > The Police
Copeland can't drum like PEART, STINGS overrated !!! 🇺🇲🤪🍺👀
this video is so dumb 😂
What nonsense is this?
The Police ? 👎👎
This is a big nothing burger. Let Neil Peart Rest In Peace.
lol - yea it was....
Would have been great if Rush had dyed their hair blonde.
