WOW what a little cutie, the little dog looks so gorgeous, and you made him or her perfectly, in fact I've ordered a needle felting storage bag set, to do soaps and other crafts with it, I'm a beginner, but needle felted soap before, this portrait is outstanding❤
Once you understand how the wool is attached with the poking it is much the same as painting; often working with the dark first and highlights on top. Good luck!
You say you loved your pup very much and so it must be true he/she is no longer with you. Nevertheless, your beautiful piece makes it look like he/she could jump right off of the canvas. It is clear in any portrait, regardless of the medium, that once you have the eyes, you have the whole essence of the creation, which you certainly have captured here. He/she must have been full of life and love. Thank you so very much for content worth watching. Blessings.
Thanks! You definitely got that right about the eyes! I have always marvelled at how that is true as I am actually an illustrator by trade. Often the eyes are not that clear in a photo and need some adjustment post-photo to be able to see the 'sparkle'. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I miss him so much! I tried mixing blue and red once to try and get purple and it was very strange because they didn't quite mix well but my eye sort of saw it like purple in certain places, curious thing. Really nice video! thanks!
Could you iron a stabilizer on the back of a thinner felt sheet? I’m on a fixed income so always looking for less expensive ways of doing everything. Love your work.
I would think stabilizer is fairly expensive. I'm cautious as it may become stuck in the barbs of the needle. If you have it already maybe you should do a small test. You can use a piece of linen , even from a vintage napkin
I am so grateful for your video. You have such a talent. Such an eye for detail. How did you transfer the image onto the cotton fabric? Did you redraw again? Your choice of fabrics opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me.
I learned quite a bit from watching your video, Thank you..May I ask,,How many colors do you use for the fur in a Black & White dog?? Including the reflections. I'm Fascinated !
I am New to this and was just wondering, which fabric do you like the best to work with? Which is best to trace on, and punch the needles thru. And which one Will last best? I was thinking about making a portait, but make it as a pillowcase. Thank you for this tutorial, absolutely amazing!
i like to use real linen as it is strong and also a natural fibre. Linen is so strong that it won't even allow ripping along the grain as cotton does. I'm loving linen lately... Best of Luck!
Wow! This is incredible. I feel I learned so much from watching this video. A couple questions… how long did this take you to complete? Also, what would you say is the estimated cost of making one portrait? And last, what kind of scissors are those?
It took possibly 4 hours. I do not do commissions so I do not know the cost. Search Etsy possibly for commission artists. Those are little snips that work by squeezing. I actually got the red ones at a dollar store.

I used Procreate (add a layer and trace) on an Ipad with the Apple pencil, but I used to just use tracing paper over a photo. You can also try Adobe Illustrator and 'livetrace', or even Photoshop > posterize for shapes of colours.

Sorry just starting out....what's the name of the little scissors please?
Hi, May I know that you use short hair wool?
If you don’t mind sharing, what is the name of the program/app you use for tracing the outline?
I used Procreate (add a layer and trace) on an Ipad with the Apple pencil, but I used to just use tracing paper over a photo. You can also try Adobe Illustrator and 'livetrace', or even Photoshop > posterize for shapes of colours.
Beautiful work. Do you sell them
I have that
Typically how long does it take for you to do a portrait?
I think it took about 5-6 hours of the felting and some time to get the image ready as well. I hope I've inspired you
@@madebybarbcom you have! It’s just awesome what you do! Thank you for taking the time to share.
What do you have underneath?
I made a wool pad (layers of felted vintage wool blanket). You can see it here: www.madebybarb.com/2021/08/22/needle-felted-pet-portrait/
