I was looking at Norwegian paintings and they seemed dark. Then I remembered they don't have light much of the year. I have one small north window light in the studio, so I turned off the lights I normally used and did a self portrait. I had to use a dim flashlight to see what color I was getting from the palette, and I took off my glasses when I painted because I didn't want the glasses in the painting. No need to squint. The result won two awards locally, but if I did that all the time I would go blind!
Lights with shadows radiates such beauty and awe; it seems so spiritual and scientific all at the same time. We artist are always trying to capture those magnificent angles/angels with its colorful delights.

In my house, I have three bathrooms.
If I have a painting that I think I have finished, or one I have been struggling with, I hang it over the toilet.
Makes it easy to examine every square millimetre, to figure out what to do next - or not do anything with it.
Over the toilet or across from the toilet? the idea of putting my paintings across from my throne of contemplation is hilarious hahaha

Thanks! I bought bright LED lights to put over my watercolor area, and my paintings look perfect there, but are too dark when I hang them! Here is my answer!

lol, I also needed this video sofa king badly!!! lately, i ain't been able to see wth I'm painting b/c of the light... it is quite the makeshift studio currently... the middle area of my single-wide trailer!!! lol... i must paint... and kind of feel like drinking some top shelf turpentine... (disclaimer: DO NOT DRINK TURPENTINE.... unless it's the good sh!t!)(no, really, don't drink it...)

This is good information, but I caution all that this may not always be true. I paint in very bright light and my paintings do not look dark outside the studio. It could be that I am so used to it, that I have learned to compensate. I also believe paintings displayed should have adequate light.
So glad I've found you, because for years listening to other artists talking about their studio, all would point out the magnificent natural light from the huge windows, and I would think how hard and HOT it must be in there and how much glare would be on the canvas. Anywho, my studio in my home doesn't have the best light and it does make the light in my paintings brighter, because I have to paint it in to see it good. This is such a great video and I hope a lot of other artists see it to understand you don't have to have the big fabulous studio with floor-to-ceiling Windows. 😎
