I believe in the song "died standing pat" means "died with some money - not in debt" - i.e., the singer hopes he'll have enough money left that he can afford a funeral with a new suit AND an expensive decoration on the watch chain that will get buried with him. There's another verse about having a fancy hearse with 6 white horses, singers and a band, so not dying in poverty is clearly a theme. Thanks for translating a great song.
