What do you think of Disneyland's opening broadcast? Would you have wanted to experience Disneyland's first day, despite all of the issues?
I was there when Walt opened the gate on the first opening day for the press. I write about it in depth in my book, "My Disney Side" on Amazon. It was worse than you think. Disney's own people were thinking it was a money loser. My own dad thought it was a loser. He wrote a really small newspaper story about the opening. Me, at age 3, knew it was a winner. I was the first kid in Fantasyland and to ride Mr. Toad.
It looks creepy but in 1955 but now in 2000’s it’s a lot better and it’s fixed up and the costumes are epic
Thank you so much for sharing. I will take disney any way I can get it. Ha.
I think the overcrowding on the "invite only" opening day is most def the result of future time travelers wanting to visit the historic event.
You can't do something this big, this revolutionary and not expect problems.
My father was one of the 144 musicians selected from 66 countries who formed part of the World Symphony Orchestra. They performed for the inauguration ceremony in October 1971.
SWEET, He must have been a fine musician ....cheers
Congratulations
John Hammond: All major theme parks have delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked.
Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but John, if the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists.

"To all who come to this happy place..." makes me tear up.
Yup, it has the a Peter Pan never never magic
I would have come just for the speech
3:39 Jeezus.... and people think that Disney parks today are too crowded.
I know! I've never seen Main street so packed
jakevader93 not DisneyLand but in 2018 Magic Kingdom in Disney World reached full capacity and it was about that crowded!
The broadcaster getting caught while making out with the performer... CLASSIC!!!
Hahaha, originally I thought it was set up until I thought about it and did a little bit more research...that was completely real!
Are You Interested? Her "oh crap I got caught!" face says it all...
I was wondering if it was set up or real! How funny!!
I am so sure that Mr Disney didn't know about that prior to filming, he was very strict about things like that. I met him once, what a great experience.
@@andresdizitti2017 I believe the broadcasters ( bob cummings ) wife and children were there with him that day .
About that plumbers strike: Disney had a choice of working water fountains or bathrooms. Walt reasoned that people could drink coke but they needed toilets.
Quote:
Contractor: "Walt there just aren't enough hours in the day to finish the restrooms and to finish all the drinking fountains."
Walt: "Well people can drink Coke and Pepsi, but they can't pee in the streets. Finish the restrooms."
@@Thomas_H._Smith 🤣🤣 thanks, I couldn’t find the exact quote.
My grandpa watched the opening day live broadcast on his TV. He said everyone in his town was so excited and they all ran to the TV to watch Walts Speech.
My grandmother went & I have the ticket. She said it was crowded, hot, dusty and no water fountains. Other than that, great! But she went many times over the years, even rode the Matterhorn into her late 70's.
I only lived a short time away from Disney land, and I wasn't important enough to be asked to opening day. I did go to the park not to long after it opened. I spent so many happy days there. Then later in my teenage years we would go in the evenings to Hoot ta nanny night. The park had many folk songs singers around and we would go to tomorrow land to see who was playing there first. So many good times.
Fun Fact: One of the invited guests was an eleven year old George Lucas.
Interesting, who knew he would allow Disneyland to create a Star Wars attraction known as Star Tours, then an area being added as well.
64 Years later, Disney+ is having Opening day problems of its own.
But unlike Disneyland it’s not a winner...

And unlike Disneyland. It was created for "reimagine tomorrow".
I was there on opening day in 1955. I remember being unable to get on any rides and wound up going round and round the park on the train.
That’s so cool. I’m visiting DL for the first time next week.
@@stephaniemc9948 Let us know how it went on Your 1st time ok..... I went in the last 60's as a boy, then in the 80's and last time around 93...I'm going back in the next couple years ....cheers Stephanie
Someday, this channel is going to be something bigger than you can possibly imagine!
And when that day comes.....
( don't forget about me ☺️)
The Mafia actually made and sold counterfeit tickets to that event. That was part of the reason it was so crowded.
It's so fascinating to see how Disneyland started as such a catastrophe! Would have loved to be there on the opening year.
Your channel is amazing. I really enjoy your content.
Anyone else say the opening speech along with Walt while watching this video?
hearing his speech always makes me want to cry
Great video I enjoyed it !
“Art Linkletter seems to have lost his microphone. He looks ALL confused…”
Originally, I hear, Disneyland was supposed to be in Burbank and much smaller.
My Mom went on opening day with my Grandpa. So all the footage I see from that day I just see little Ruthie in my head in awe. She was 5. My Dad went sometime the first month. He was 7.
Wow ronald reagan..
Can’t wait for this channel to be popular
My Aunt & Uncle treated us to Disneyland ("Disney's new amusement park") 8 weeks after it opened!
even though it's really chaotic, it looks really fun. i would go there just to see the park
I was there on opening day. I was 3. We got in free. My dad was mad because the press (reporters) didn't get any booze. He wrote a small 3 inch blurb for his paper that didn't even have his name on it.
My Uncle have told that they went on the first week.
Hello, I lived there about 3 miles away, in Garden Grove, CA, and was privileged to meet Mr. Disney, He was wonderful and so was our beautiful Heavenly Disneyland. I was 6 years old when I met Mr. Disney. He gave my family a private tour through Mr. Lincoln Grand Open. I will sincerely regard him and all of his Genesis. There will never be another Walt Disney.
Mrs. Fawn Cheyenne Valley Joseph White Cloud Jett 🎉
3:07 the look on the girls face reaction you been eating at KFC LOL
It will be a dark day when Disney is no more!
I was at Disneyland on the 3rd day it was open. I have home movies of it. The only thing I actually remember was mom picking oranges off trees just a few hundred yards from Disneyland.
At least it wasn't built by Phineas and Ferb...because we all know what would happen if it was.
It would all disappear thanks to Doofenshmirtz's inactor.
3:07 lmao! 😂
Walt Disney inspired me so much I love his work hope your well Walt and never forget your uncle Walt to me and the world
Watching this the day star wars land
Just opened.
My grandma came 7 days after it opened
What rides did she go to
My great grandma was alive before the
park even opened she was born in 1924
Shes 96 :/
3:05 LMAO
Walt changed the future and view of many things. I think he was a pioneer made things to perfection. (till disney corp went to be a money driven all eating all wanting factory)
Only one year took them to build the entire park????
happy bday 2019
It is just a delay. All major theme parks have delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked.
J. Hammond 🤩
I find this interesting
No captions 😞
This guy kept going though. Good job Walt.
no matter what it was a wonderful place for kids
Temps were over 100...guys wearing suits....
Not opening day, but after the Pirate's of the Caribbean, and before the liberals took over and destroyed the dream. I'm still sick about many of the changes and liberal changes, I just never went back. My brother refused to buy his annual pass, for other reasons. The prices became typical from $1.00 to 98.00. Makes me sick, nothing to show for it and people? Way too many people. It's been 16 years since I went back and counting.
It is pretty strange to include your hate for your political enemies in your comment. Were liberals also the ones who informed you that Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny weren't real?
Funny broad cast lol the guy kissing 🤣
this comment is off topic but... WHY DOES THIS VIDEO KEEPS BUFFERING?!?!?!??!?!??!?!?
I think 3:07 might be staged?
Yea I think so too
who cares it was great to be there
Imagine if Walt was still alive and thinking “wow my last name is now the meaning of “magical”
Except it isn't. Child trafficking, woke ideologies, and a plethora of other disgusting issues make it one of the most despised names in history.
It seems like Disney parks are always cursed with a troubled opening day. It must have sucked to have to evacuate and close half the park I do have to point out a flaw in the way the opening was carried out tho.....they should have made sure everything was working properly, maybe have poured the pavement a bit sooner than they did and over stocked the restaurants to accommodate the crowd
Except in Tokyo.
3:06 - The infamous kiss may have been staged in-my-opinion and done so as some poorly thought out comedy on ABC's half.
I'd say it was.
I would rather see it then before all the woke crap ruined it
