They reuse all thwir characters to save money, and why would they easte their time making them original? Also thumbnails are creepy.

Fun fact: some say that Caligula didn't make his horse a senator because he was crazy, but as political manoeuvre to tell the senators that under his rule they were so unimportant that he could as well put a bunch of horses in their place and it wouldn't even make a difference. So, more than a sign of his madness, it was YET ANOTHER sign of his raging megalomania
He never did that, he said that he'd make his horse consul because they're so bad
If I had such a rotten Senate, I would probably make my horse a council too, just to make my point.

Not much likely to be true. He probably just treathened to do so in a sarcastic way to emphasize how much he was disappointed with the senators. He presumably was methodically defamed by his rival enemies and his actions exaggerated to make him look more evil than he actually was. In that time in Rome when rulers was dethroned (which happened frequently) the successors had the custom of removing their faces from statues and wipe out all visible memories of their existence (like when Caligulas two big luxurious palace ships where sunk on the lake Nemi after his death). Their legacy was to be defamed and eradicated from history. Caligula was probably an evil despot, but so were most rulers of that time. Anyhow one can't take the tales and myths of what's written about him as truthful facts, but with a pinch of salt.
He married his horse.

Horses were actually considered Citizens or People at the time.

Caligula was the first emperor to openly mock the Senate and flaunt his absolute power. His predecessors tried to keep up the facade that the Senate still had power, even though they didn't. That's why the Senate hated him, and his biographers were all senators. So the stories we have about him are almost certainly embellished and biased.
Yes. I think the netflix series roman empire explains his story best

Caligula's nickname is kind of funny. It translates as something cute, 'Little Boots' but the name is associated with a very terrifying man. Imagine someone saying: "Watch out for Little Boots! He's a terrifyingly evil man..."
"watch gladiator fight to the death on a regular basis" WRONG , gladiators were profesionnal athletes , combat to the death was extremely rare
Not to mention most of what we know about Caligua was from sources of a nearly tabloid like nature. Like modern day, the media during the Roman era could show bias or present fantasy to sell copies. Its a shame that the poster of the video didn't show this, or even show they knew about it.
So it was basically pro wrestling, but with swords and spears instead of chairs?
@I’m Praying they were Romans, not Punics
@I’m Praying Human sacrifice in Rome was extremely rare and unpopular with the masses.
@I’m Praying The people you're talking about were not gladiators: they were criminals, prisoners of war, dissidents and such. Mass executions were treated as a spectacle, with the victims being thrown in the arena to be eaten alive by wild beasts, and many other forms of execution (many saints of the catholic church were martyrs publicly executed by the romans because roman elites deemed christian preaching to be divisive and encouraging of social uprising). Gladiators, on the other hand, although they still usually were slaves and PoWs, were indeed much more similar to modern day professional athletes: they were trained in special schools, fed and nurtured, the best of them had their own affectionate fans cheering for them in every match, and rarely fought to the death. Quite the opposite: since they were celebrities and, of course, training a champion came with a high cost in terms of both time and money, many measures were taken to avoid gladiators dying or being permanently incapacitated in the arena.

There's also a big hole of information. Caligula was loved by his people for being Kind of nice. After a disease called brain fever He went insane

well, it does explain the name "caligula's palace" in GTA: San Andreas
Showed this vid to my mom, then she said "There's something very wrong with this man."
It's funny how this all started just because he passed out from a cold which turned him to an absolute madman
This is a very simplified representation of Emperor Caligula. It is true that he was brutal and cruel and that the time with Tiberius shaped him, but it is not told here that he was repeatedly betrayed by the senators in the early days of his reign. They tried more than once to crash him because he was so popular with the people. Even his sister Agrippina, later the mother of Emperor Nero, involved them in their power games to put their husband on the throne. What is Gemelus? The grandson of Tiberius, who grew up with Caligula on Capri and experienced the same horrors, was later adopted by Caligula as his successor and then driven into revolt against him by the Senate?
Caligula was not really cruel than other emperors, he was only the first emperor in Rome's history to show the Senate its limits. He had had enough of their intrigues and power games and was more concerned with how the people saw him. The Senate hated him because he restricted their power and preferred to hang out with the kings in the provinces. One of his best friends was the then king of Judea and Samaria Herod Agrippa the first. He also pulled the body of Caligula out of the Tiber and had Caligula murderers executed. The imperial cult in Jerusalem was also forced because Caligula was fed up with the fact that the Jews were violent against the Greek minority in Judea. His alleged war against Poseidon is nothing more than an ancient feud of the senators.
In the end he only became so cruel because the Senate didn't want to accept that their times as rulers of Rome were over. He is so fed up that he wanted to move the capital of the empire to Egypt.
You should put all the facts on the table when you make a video about a historical person!
So because your life was horrible I ,an innocent nobody ,now has to suffer for it???? None of these stuff excuse him for the horrible stuff he's done.

It's a common misconception that the praetorian guard only purpose was to protect the emperor. It seems that the praetorian guard was more concerned with protecting the Roman people from the emperor which is why they ended up Tiberius and Caligula and many other emperors
The worst part is that with Emperors like Honorius, Valentinian III, Petronius Maximus, and Phocas, Caligula wasn't even in the top five of worst Roman Emperors.
"Culture that engaged in violent entertainment watching gladiator fights to the death on a regular basis". If you know anything about history is that yes they had a more rough sense of entertainment but gladiator fights rarely ended up with deaths. Gladiators were essentially a product losing it was not considered desirable for anyone therefore fighting to death was rare.

Commodus, who came later, was far worse. At least Caligula had the possible excuse of having gone insane from a "brain fever." He wasn't so bad the first few months of his reign. Commodus was fictionalized in the movie Gladiator, played by Joaquin Phoenix, but it did not portray enough of his evil.

I think it is possible he may be one of the greatest victims of circumstance in history. Not excusing his deeds but my God, raised by Tiberius, that king of cowardness and debauchery.
