I was just in a game like 10 minutes ago and I lost my helmet and it was a good 15 seconds before they blew the whistle, anyway it was scary but I kept in the play and kept playing (I’m a goalie)
The whole story about that night in New York when Plante donned the mask for the first time in a game wasn't mentioned. What really happened is that the Rangers wound the puck around the boards and Plante went behind the net to stop it. Andy Bathgate of the Rangers gave chase and skated towards Plante. Bathgate, always a gentleman, gave Plante a wide berth but "The Snake" stuck out his hip and Bathgate went tumbling towards the ice. Later, Bathgate had his revenge when his aimed shot hit Plante.
Montreal was such a great team in the 1960s! How could anyone give this video a thumbs down? Good - accurate stuff! RIP Jacques Plante. (Honoured today by Google!)
He was a great goalie, and the first go play as a defensive type goalie, getting in tot he action. I have an autograph from him that he sent me when i was ten years old
Plante pioneered the use of the mask and even started up his own company that made high quality fiberglass masks, both off the shelf and custom fit I think.
I played goalie in full contact pond hockey back in the 60s. After getting hit in various places on my head and face I borrowed a baseball catcher mask and after a few games bought one. I’m now 65 and still have the scars and am glad I got that mask.
Rebecca is so pretty 😍 the hocky mask was common buy the 90s after jason voorhees who also go it from hockey 🏒 even the 90s hocky goalies doned the hocky mask
A lot of people say 360 because in their mind, 360 is a higher number than 180. So a 360 sounds double important for a dramatic change. But in all actuality, a 360 would be the result of doing absolutely nothing different.
I guess you could say he... changed the FACE of hockey! Seriously, all it took was for him to play with the mask on, and slowly but surely, other goalies started doing the same.
There was one goaltender a few decades earlier who attempted wearing a mask, but it didn't last long. Clint Benedict of the original Ottawa Senators wore a leather mask on his face to protect a broken nose, but it became too awkward for him and he soon scrapped it.

Oh yeah and 8 Stanley Cups, At the time of retirement Winningest Coach in NHL history. A mighty Fine Left Winger in the 1930's and 40's, and a third of the Punch line. Toe also told Plante well before the Rangers game that if he was cut you can wear the mask. Plante was cut pretty bad, definitely broke his nose, and so he put on the mask and then it was out forever.

Wait I played hockey and I was a goalie in competitive hockey and when my mask fell off they wouldn't blow the whistle. I have made several saves without a helmet on in my life rime. It definitely is scary as shit but when your on the ice your instinct takes over.
FRED ROGERS no, I was just in a game like 10 minutes ago and I lost my helmet and it was a good 15 seconds before they blew the whistle, anyway it was scary but I kept in the play and kept playing (I’m a goalie)
He changed nothing ! The catcher ( or ball keeper) in baseball always wore a mask since the beginning of this game. In hockey they were too stupid to understand that. It took 100 years to understand that the puck is as dangerous as a baseball ball. Pity !
Wait what? The biographer said that their wasnt a back up goalie back then but then he goes to say that jacques fellow goalies didnt like his mask either
you had to be totally crazy to be a goalie back then.
goalie is the safest position in hockey today
but what about the defenseman that has to stand in front of those same shots but without a cage or any other equipment a goalie has?
jim ritzheimer I agree
3 words that motivate most anyone, money, money, money

lol a full 360
My absolute biggest verbal pet peeve. It's not even partially wrong, it's ENTIRELY wrong.

Glenn Hall (ex Edmonton Flyers ) played over 500 straight games without a mask
....with the Black Hawks........
Can’t believe this was 9 years ago
Jesse Menbreno you mean the video or the incident
I refused to go on the ice without one, and in my day you had a few bare faced goalies(Most notable Gump Worseley)
This was watchmojo!?
Ikr?
I guess you could say he... changed the FACE of hockey! Seriously, all it took was for him to play with the mask on, and slowly but surely, other goalies started doing the same.
Damn hockey is a badass sport.

thank you for doing this but i hope there is a top 10 mask designs
Vachon was the last goalie to win the Cup without a mask, 1969.
"It's really turned a 360° from what it was back then." Epic troll for people that are bad at math.
Glen Hall played 500 career games without a mask . That’s scary

@@jakeflak1554 Damn
Without Jacques Plante there will be no Jason Voorhees...
what is with the fake weird dude in the first 12 seconds?!
Miles Thomson He is actually real. Poor kid, he is just in shock and has been in that spot since 1993 when the Flyers beat Montreal 9-2.
grady 180 hahaha I remember that game. I remember exactly where I was and who I was with
@@jimritzheimer7465 Tell us the story friend!
That's not a person in the background it's a statue of a fan in the old Montreal Forum. I was there just a few weeks ago.
if it goes 360, then wouldn't it be going in the same direction?
pretty hard to believe that ppl used to play this game without masks, especially goalies... like wtf
Pucks can hurt real bad, that's why.
We all wear a mask today 2😷21.
Published on my birthday
🤠
They were in the forum
The only two goalies I remember for ATL in 74 are Dan Bouchard and Phil Myre
That cool the history of hockey
Including my uncle, Jacques Plante
that goalie is crazy
Toe Blake's legacy: The scumbag who prevented the genius of Jacques Plante from wearing his mask, which resulted in preventable injuries.

funny thing is this plays off as some dramatic movie about the first of his KIND !
and for the safety of thee gameee
In today's hockey, just one game without wearing a mask will result in a serious injury.
Matthew I still get injured even wearing a mask. I get hit in the head a lot :/

There was a goalie on the Montreal maroons with a mask
“360” someone must’ve not payed attention
Hi Rebecca....You certainly don't need a mask
The pads are so small on them
So.... that's what she looks like
It’s gone a 180, not a 360
back then the puck went pretty much under knees

Come on!! Really? 1932 USA Olympic goalie wore one . 1936 Japanese Olympic goalie wore one. Stop the fake history lesson
